In turn, it also provides opportunities for students to learn in real-world environments, said Debra Lam, SCI2's managing director and the founding executive director for the <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/initiatives/">Partnership for Inclusive Innovation</a> (PIN), a statewide public-private partnership between Georgia Tech, the state of Georgia, civic leaders, and the business community.SCI2's work with Georgia communities starts with a "matchmaking conversation," where researchers learn about a municipality's needs, goals, and existing resources, Lam said. It's about "understanding the local context and trying to understand and isolate the problem. You're not coming in with a fancy solution at first and then trying to box it into something," she added. Some of the problems they help solve include transportation, <keyword id="13076253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="public-safety" source="Orion">public safety</keyword>, and the effects of <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword>.Lam's team then identifies what tools are available, such as data, hardware, or software, and how SCI2 can help from a multidisciplinary applied research standpoint."We have the flexibility to work with many researchers, regardless of their expertise or background," she said. "The way we think about smart cities, if you give an engineer a problem, he will think about it one way versus a computer scientist. But if you start pairing up the engineer with the public policy person or the city and regional planning person with the computer scientist, it really starts to create a synergistic kind of dialogue."Here's a closer look at how SCI2 is making Georgia communities more resilient and sustainable.<h2>Making roadways safer for drivers and pedestrians</h2>One of SCI2's major projects is the <a href="https://smartcities.gatech.edu/smart-portfolio-featured-projects">North Avenue Smart Corridor</a> in Atlanta, a two-mile "<a href="https://ce.gatech.edu/news/north-ave-smart-corridor-wins-mobility-award-international-smart-city-expo">living lab</a>" for studying multimodal traffic management that launched in 2017. It uses technology like street sensors and cameras to measure and track traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and others on the road."It's trying to understand how we can safely and efficiently move traffic around North Avenue, which is a busy intersection," Lam said.The smart corridor project helped improve traffic flow and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjV4XexoKFA">reduced vehicle crashes by 25%</a> since its inception, Georgia Tech reported. In 2018, it also won the Mobility Award at the <a href="https://www.smartcityexpo.com/">Smart City Expo World Congress</a>, an international summit recognizing smart city projects around the globe.<h2>Collecting data on sea-level rises and broadband connectivity </h2>One of PIN's central programs is <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/apply-1/">Smart Community Corps</a>, a summer program supported by Microsoft and Gulfstream that pairs students from Georgia Tech and other colleges and universities in Georgia to work on real smart city projects."It's a cross between experiential learning and public service, where you can learn about smart cities by living and working in the community," Lam said.In 2021, <a href="https://research.gatech.edu/partnership-inclusive-innovation-hits-one-year-milestone">students logged 5,280 hours</a> on projects like <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/city-of-valdosta/">traffic monitoring in Valdosta</a> and <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/clayton-county/">smart pedestrian planning in Clayton County</a>, according to Georgia Tech. The program offers grants and research assistance from students and faculty to communities for two years to become more resilient in the future.Lam said 16 communities have gone through GA Smart, with <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/">projects</a> including piloting <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/chatham-county/">sensors to measure sea-level flood risk</a> along Georgia's coast, <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/city-of-woodbury/">improving broadband connectivity</a>, and <a href="https://pingeorgia.org/all_initiatives/city-of-chamblee/">studying autonomous shuttles</a> connecting rapid transit stations around Atlanta's metro."We wanted to have a cohort of cities to show that there are a lot of different ways to do smart cities," Lam said, adding that all of PIN and SCI2's work is about empowering cities and "letting them tell us, 'Here's the problem or issue that we want to focus on.'"

Addressing a session on the 'future of mobility' at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022 on Friday, Anjum Parwez, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="6367448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMRCL" source="Orion">BMRCL</keyword>), said as part of the second and third phase of the project, Bengaluru will have 314 km of metro rail connectivity by 2041. He said construction of metro lines is also progressing well on the airport side. He said the biggest challenge in urban mobility is the integration of multi-modal transport systems and moving people to get into public transport from personalised transport modes. Parwez said urban India was the most neglected area until the 1990s, as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues. He said BMRCL is getting a lot of support from startups in mobility to ensure that commuters have last-mile connectivity. He said the corporation is tying up with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces. Parwez said the <keyword id="6367447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namma-Metro" source="Orion">Namma Metro</keyword> has recently gone digital with its payment options that include the use of QR code scans and UPI-based payment options which has met with good response from commuters. Also, there is no waiting time for passengers who are in a hurry as there is no need to stand in queues to buy tickets or cards now. He said BMRCL is working on a transit-oriented development where commuters live close to the stations and to the workplace. Besides, the BMRCL also intends to integrate all aggregators by bringing out a mobility card for commuters. He said the corporation is in talks with BMTC to have bus stops at metro stations to help commuters hop on and hop off both modes of transport. He said bike taxis and carpooling should be encouraged although the government of Karnataka had put brakes on their operation. The BMRCL is also working on introducing shopping options for commuters inside and outside the metro stations. He said the BMRCL plans to sell office space in metro stations and provide end-to-end solutions to all the stakeholders. Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said urbanisation in India is 33 per cent while it is about 80-85 per cent in European and American countries. He said about 66 per cent of urban infrastructure is yet to be built in India as the country is set to see a number of cities being built. The biggest challenge is to ensure zero emission, zero exclusion and zero accidents in urban transport, he said. Vadiraj Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, Bosch Global Software Technologies, said the future is software-defined fully programmable vehicles. "The key enablers of urban transport are personalised multi-modal mobility, automated mobility, electrified and connected mobility. Connecting vehicles using technology is an engineering challenge of the future," he said. Bengaluru metro rail on track to complete 175 km of commute by June 2025: BMRCL MD

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/los-angeles-things-to-know-before-visiting-from-a-local-2022-6">Los Angeles</a> has a network of subways, trains, and buses that stop at popular tourist destinations.</li><li>Choosing a centrally located hotel made getting around the city a lot easier. </li></ul>I was concerned when my friend, who doesn't drive, told me she was <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-that-surprised-brit-visiting-la-for-first-time-2020-2">visiting Los Angeles</a>.After all, the city isn't necessarily known for its public transportation. At first, I planned to meet her in LA and rent a car. But then I began to consider visiting the sprawling city without one.I'm used to taking New York City's 24-hour subway system, and most of my vacations have been to cities with <a href="https://www.insider.com/testing-public-transportation-in-japan-vs-america-differences-subway">extensive transportation networks</a>. This trip, however, required some research.<a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-i-noticed-moving-from-nyc-to-la-2020-3">LA has public transportation</a> options, even if they don't seem popular. The subway and buses are only $1.75 per ride, which includes any transfers within two hours. There's also a $2 fee to purchase a refillable TAP card that's used for the transit.With such great prices, I was willing to give it all a try.<h2>Getting to and from LAX was a breeze</h2><div type="image" title="People boarding a FlyAway bus outside of LAX." height="2458" width="3277" msid="104089902" hostid="261" sizebytes="450888"></div>We took the FlyAway bus, located outside each airport terminal, to Union Station for $9.75. Because there is no ticket kiosk at LAX, we had to download the FlyAway app.The <a href="https://www.insider.com/luxury-bus-nyc-dc-jet-worth-it-best-things-photos-2023-8#i-fell-in-love-with-the-futuristic-feeling-seats-2">bus ride was comfortable</a> and took about 30 minutes at midday. At the end of our trip, however, the return trip to LAX took about 50 minutes due to the morning rush. Once at Union Station, we followed signs for the Metro and purchased tickets at the kiosk. We had to ensure the kiosk was for Metro, not Metrolink, which is a separate commuter rail service.<h2>Location matters when choosing a hotel</h2>I booked the Millennium Biltmore downtown, which was <a href="https://www.insider.com/staying-at-most-expensive-place-in-disney-world-grand-floridian-photos-2023">pricier than other hotels</a>. However, its convenient location and great quality made it the best option for our stay.The hotel is a quick, five-minute walk from the Pershing Square Metro station and two stops from Union Station.<div type="image" title="A train station with multiple palm trees in the foreground." height="3024" width="4032" msid="104089903" hostid="261" sizebytes="904382"></div>The hotel was also close to other Metro lines and bus stops, making it easier to get around the sprawling city.If I had to go to LA again, I'd choose a different location to stay, only because downtown isn't the most exciting place in the city. However, I'd still make sure I stayed near a Metro station. <h2>We used public transit to see major LA-area sights </h2>With temperatures in the 70s, downtown LA was walkable. Our hotel was close to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Bradbury Building, Angels Flight Railway, and Grand Central Market. <div type="image" title="People sitting on a subway train." height="3024" width="4032" msid="104089905" hostid="261" sizebytes="511474"></div>Metro Line B took us to Hollywood for <a href="https://www.insider.com/los-angeles-what-not-worth-it-things-to-do-instead-2023-1">popular tourist destinations</a> like the Hollywood Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theater. The same subway took us to the Vermont/Sunset Station for the Observatory/Los Feliz bus to Griffith Observatory. The bus was crowded on the way back, and traffic delayed our schedule.We also visited the Petersen Automotive Museum, which felt fitting while we avoided driving in the city. This trip required a 40-minute bus ride, but a bus stop was only a block from the museum. An added advantage was that the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Little Ethiopia were also a short walk away.There were a lot of buses to figure out, but Google Maps had decent route information, and the arrival times were close to accurate. Our only issue was with buses 20/720 as they were doing detours for a festival. Although the bus network is extensive, it's best to check a map app for up-to-date times and routes. Some buses run more frequently, while others may have 20-minute headways.<h2>We took both a train and a bus to get to Malibu</h2>Our longest trip was about two hours to <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-hamptons-compared-to-malibu-california-beach-montauk-photos-2022-9">Malibu</a>. To get there, we first had to take a 45-minute train ride to Santa Monica. As I looked out the window, I noticed that at most stations, police and Metro staff were available to help passengers. <div type="image" title="An outdoor train station." height="2707" width="3609" msid="104089906" hostid="261" sizebytes="756134"></div>After getting off of the train in Santa Monica, we walked about a block to catch Bus 134 to Malibu. Although the bus didn't run as frequently as the trains, there were plenty of cafes and shops in the area to keep us busy while we waited.<div type="image" title="A red bus with a screen that reads &quot;134 Go UCLA!&quot;" height="1890" width="2521" msid="104089907" hostid="261" sizebytes="431760"></div><h2>Using public transportation was a cost-effective way to see Los Angeles</h2>Overall, the metro system in LA was efficient, and stations were spacious despite the usual lack of passengers. I was impressed by the Metro staff and stations, though the subway cars left much to be desired.Some destinations, like the Getty Museum, are difficult to access via public transportation, but most sights seemed easy to reach. An issue with visiting Los Angeles, whether by car or public transit, is that tourist destinations are not near each other — they're in clusters spread across the region.Considering how much we'd have paid to rent, park, and fuel a car, the added travel time on the buses and trains was worth it.

I visited Los Angeles without renting a car or using rideshare apps. Navigating public transportation was easy with some planning.

People will be able to book tickets, use it for metro in any city and pay for parking. </li><li>It will also let users withdraw money using the card.</li></ul> In a bid to promote hassle-free and cashless transportation, India on Monday unveiled ‘One-Nation-One-Card,’ a smart card valid for all modes of public transport in the country.

 The card will run on the government-backed payment platform RuPay, and will be valid at metros, buses or trains, as well as for toll and parking. The card draws inspiration from existing services connecting transport in Singapore and London. India’s capital, New Delhi, has already been running a pilot project of a common smart card “One Card” connecting city buses and the Delhi metro.

In fact, it will let people withdraw money from it. </li><li>The card will be issued by any bank as debit, credit or prepaid. </li><li>The “Made in India” RuPay Card is a contactless card and will allow people to tap-and-go. </li><li>It can be <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/pm-modi-to-launch-one-nation-one-card-for-all-modes-of-travel-today/articleshow/68247992.cms">used</a> just like any other debit or credit card.
