Think Mumbai and we think of the ‘maximum’ city; the city that never sleeps; the city on the Indian coastline that never ceases to amaze with its spirit and perseverance; the city that never loses the spring in its step. 
 
Till now, the city lived and thrived upon its local train network. Most of the population must have spent most of their time in those trains, only visiting their respective homes to catch up on food and sleep. That may sound like an overstatement to many who don’t live there. But the truth is this train network, stretching up to 465 km and built by the British way back in 1853, forms the very core of the city’s soul. 
 Only recently, the city that is always on the move, got wind beneath its wings. It was a historic occasion for Mumbaikars when the <keyword id="117023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-metro">Mumbai Metro</keyword> started rolling on elevated tracks, connecting 11.40 km and helping 700 million passengers reach their destinations. Needless to say, the metro has added immense pace to their already busy life. 
 
Just like the human facelift, it adds to the character of the city when it gets a metro. The city then ceases to live in time warp and joins the cadre of the ‘selected few’ cities in the world which are green, futuristic and efficient in every way. 
 
Other ‘metro’ cities such as Kolkata, Delhi, Gurgaon and Bangalore are already contributing in reducing traffic density while the upcoming metro rail projects in cities like Jaipur, Kochi, Hyderabad and Chennai will ensure similar advantages. Plans to expand train operations are also afoot in the ‘metro’ cities. 
 
Cities such as Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Bhopal are also making a beeline to get the ‘metro’ projects approved although they do not qualify for the same due to limited population. But this may spell good news for international players who see an opportunity to participate in building the country’s infrastructure. 
 As India has been one of the favourite destinations for international investments, countries like South Korea are showing interest in building the transport infrastructure of the country. In fact, Korean company Hyndai Rotem recently placed a huge order with Voith for the extension of <keyword id="6366797" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword>. 
 
It is no wonder then that the infrastructure of Mumbai is undergoing a ‘Gen Z’ category of facelift. You need to keep in mind that the cities clocking growth are the ones which are driving the new economy and the facilities created for these cities with tremendous ‘growth potential’ are presumed to be world class, too. 
 
To understand this better, we need to compare the Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore Metro with those in Singapore, Hong Kong or New York. It will be a fair comparison because all the metro systems of the world today serve the same purpose – that of catering to different pockets of urban population. 
 
Interestingly, a metro city is defined as one that has found solutions to meet its ever-growing transportation needs. A ‘global city’ is the one that has more than 60-80% of its population travelling by public transportation. And a metro rail plays a significant role in this marker of progress. It also efficiently addresses a city’s growing energy needs while bringing down the carbon footprint. 
 
The world’s oldest metro system is the London Underground or the Tube that celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. This one has stood the test of time, compared to most other metros in the world, and has kept London comparatively free from traffic congestion. 
 
Compared to the world metro networks, India has miles to tread and catch up with the speed. The Indian metro lines don’t come close to the technology advancements featured by the trains across the globe. But then, India has a unique problem – the high density of population. 
 
However, Hong Kong, which decidedly grapples with the same challenge, does its act rather efficiently. The Hong Kong MTR (Metro) has earned praises for its presentation and schedule. It has also kept up with modern technology and offers free Wi-Fi services to passengers.

India’s Metro Rail: Are We On Par With
Global Systems?

<ul><li>The demand for professionals trained in digital technologies was mostly seen in metro cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, according to a report by Quess IT Staffing.</li><li>As companies are now expanding their footprint in tier 2 and 3 cities, these cities have also seen a spurt in demand for people with <keyword id="1458566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-skills" source="Orion">digital skills</keyword>.</li><li>Products, automotive and engineering, BFSI, telecom, and consulting are the top five industries which saw the most demand for these digital skills.</li></ul>As the world is rapidly evolving around digital technologies, the demand for skilled talent continues to rise across industries in India. This demand is mostly seen in the metro cities of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai between April and June 2022, according to a report by Quess IT Staffing. India’s tech industry added 4,50,000 jobs in FY22 and recorded a revenue growth of $30 billion. Hyderabad, among all metro cities in India, was the top recruiter of these IT professionals, the report said. After Hyderabad, other metros like Bengaluru (33%), Mumbai (12%), Pune (9%) and Chennai (5%) hired the most number of IT digital talent. Digital skills like <keyword id="771372" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-analytics" source="Orion">data analytics</keyword>, Java technologies, cloud infra technologies, full-stack technologies, and UI and UX were the top digital skills that were in demand during the period, the report added. “India’s massive digital infrastructure played a key role in driving the country’s tech adoption, with public digital platforms becoming the bedrock of India’s digital advantage. This led to a spike in digital talent hiring and activities undertaken by companies around skilling soared,” said the report. With companies expanding their footprint in tier 2 and 3 cities, hiring for IT professionals also saw a concurrent spurt in cities like Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar and Jaipur, besides NCR. “While there are seeming headwinds in the tech hiring market, certain skills continue to be high in demand such as full-stack roles and data analytics roles,” said Vijay Sivaram, CEO at Quess IT Staffing. Growing adoption of digital applications has resulted in a huge surge in the need for digital talent across sectors. The report reveals that products, automotive and engineering, BFSI, telecom, and consulting are the top five industries which saw the most demand for these digital skills. “As organizations continue in their digital and cloud transformation journeys, we are witnessing a hiring uptick in the same. Startup hiring is in moderation. However, on the other hand, India continues to see growth in captives, particularly in tech and R&amp;D,” Sivaram added. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai hired the most number of IT digital skill experts

New Delhi, May 3 () Mahindra Holidays &amp; Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) on Sunday said it plans to first reopen resorts that are at drivable distance from the metro cities once the coronavirus lockdown is lifted. The Mahindra Group firm has currently suspended operations at its resorts in compliance with the government directives. "At Club Mahindra we have over 255,000 member families and once travel restrictions are relaxed and state borders open up, and people feel comfortable enough to travel again, we expect our members and their families to start travelling to our resorts in their own vehicles, since we are at drivable distances from major cities," MHRIL MD and CEO Kavinder Singh told . The company is gearing up for this by putting in place all the necessary safety related standard operating procedures (SOPs). It will ensure the highest levels of hygiene standards (hospital grade) to achieve a quick return to normalcy, he added. "We will first open resorts that are at a drivable distance from the major metro cities," Singh said. He, however did not share the number of resorts that would be opened in the first phase. The company has over 100 resorts in India and abroad. Asked about the steps the company is taking to ensure the health and safety of guests and employees at the resorts, Singh said: "In view of the current situation we are implementing various SOPs which will cover hygiene and disinfection norms at all the touch points in our resorts." The company will ensure social distancing norms for members at its resorts. The resorts are much bigger than traditional hotels, have open spaces and are spread out and this helps in facilitating social distancing norms, he added. "The entire guest experience right from check in to resort experiences including F&amp;B will be contactless. Our best-in-class experiences will help keep our members and their families engaged, while maintaining the highest safety and hygiene standards," Singh said. Club Mahindra is partnering with experts in the healthcare and technology spaces for implementing these enhanced safety procedures and contactless services, he added. Asked about the impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown on the hospitality industry, Singh said: "COVID-19 is a true Black Swan event that presents an unprecedented challenge to the hospitality and aviation industries in India and globally. It has deeply impacted the hospitality industry with occupancies declining sharply, as India went into lockdown from March 25." According to recent estimates, the overall revenue of the Indian hotel industry will decline by about Rs 90,000 crore in 2020, an erosion of 57 per cent compared to last year. More importantly, it is estimated that there will be around 38 million job losses, he said. On the way forward for the industry, Singh said the sector expects a slow recovery as there will be many strict travel restrictions even as the lockdown begins to get lifted. Domestic travel will begin much faster than international travel, but both will take some time to fully recover. He further said the industry is expecting support from the government for its survival. "Most of the hospitality players have debt on their books and industry is hoping for a debt recast and for the moratorium to be extended to 12 months. This would certainly provide much-needed relief," Singh said. The industry is also hoping for waiver or deferment of statutory payments and minimum electricity demand charges as this will help it with the working capital situation, he added. "The industry also employs millions of people, so it would be helpful if there is some level of support for them, such as a direct benefit package for the staff who keep the industry running," Singh said. For the revival of the industry, the annual leave travel allowance (LTA) should be made tax-free, every year, so that people have more money to spend on travel once things get better, he added. Mahindra Holidays to first reopen resorts near metro cities post lockdown

<ul><li><keyword id="6358932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Minister">Union Minister</keyword> <keyword id="151350" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hardeep-Singh-Puri">Hardeep Singh Puri</keyword> announced that <keyword id="357506" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metro-networks">metro networks</keyword> are going to be expanded to 15 other cities across the country.</li><li>India already has an operational metro network of over 515 kms and will expand to 660 kms more for rapid urban transformation.</li><li>The state governments and union territories have been asked to submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR).</li></ul>Spread over 10 cities across the country, India's metro network is now set to expand its operations to at least 15 more cities. The Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, made the announcement on Monday and also listed the new cities out. Currently, the metro rail line has an operational network of over 500 kms and will expand to 660 kms more for rapid urban transformation. As of now, metro is functional in 10 cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru and Kolkata being the first to kick off metro services in India in 1984. Fifteen more cities are also under consideration for metro coverage. Puri said that nearly 664 kms of metro rail network is under various stages of implementation while more than 515 kms is already operational in India. Nagpur, Pune and Ahmedabad are likely to get the network by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/railways/15-more-cities-will-soon-have-metro-network-union-minister-puri/articleshow/66419131.cms">next year</a>. The new cities that are on the list include Varanasi, Indore, Coimbatore, Kanpur, Bhopal, Patna, Surat, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram and Navi Mumbai. In an interaction with the members of Consultative Committee, Puri spoke about the new urban transformation in India and pointed out that the government provides financial support to metro rail projects in 3 forms. It can either give a grant to states of up to <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=184454">10%</a> of project costs, in the form of a 50:50 equity sharing with state governments or a viability gap funding to the extent of <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=184454">20%</a> of the capital cost of public transport projects under a PPP model. The state government and union territories, on the new list of 15 cities, have been asked to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) in accordance to the provisions in the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and submit it to the central government. The policy aims to ensure convenience to the people dependent on public transport. At the interaction, Puri also mentioned that the provision of last mile connectivity for the <keyword id="6366797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword> is at an advanced stage. New Delhi [India], March 1 (ANI): Oil marketing companies have announced a significant increase in the prices of commercial Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) gas cylinders, effective from March 1. Sources reveal that the rate of 19 kg commercial LPG gas cylinders has been raised by Rs 25.50, impacting consumers across various metro cities. The revision in prices comes amid ongoing fluctuations in fuel costs and market dynamics. According to the latest updates, the retail sales price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi will stand at Rs 1795 from March 1 onwards. This adjustment reflects the evolving landscape of fuel pricing and its implications for consumers. Comparing the revised prices with previous rates offers insights into the extent of the increase. In metro cities like <keyword id="19896626" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata" source="keywords">Kolkata</keyword>, <keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword>, and <keyword id="19895758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chennai" source="keywords">Chennai</keyword>, the prices of 19 kg <keyword id="20787104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indane" source="keywords">Indane</keyword> gas cylinders have also been revised upwards. These prices served as the baseline for consumers at the beginning of the month. In Delhi, the price surged by 1.44 per cent (Rs 25.5), reaching a new rate of Rs 1795. Similarly, Kolkata experienced an increase of 1.27 per cent (Rs 24), resulting in a revised price of Rs 1911. Mumbai saw a rise of 1.48 per cent (Rs 25.5), bringing the price up to Rs 1749, while Chennai witnessed an increase of 1.21 per cent (Rs 23.5), setting the new rate at Rs 1960.50. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Lucas Jackson/ReutersWomen sun themselves during a hot summer day at a park in the Brooklyn borough of New York July 20, 2011.</div></div></div>The US Census delivered a stunning report about household income trends on Tuesday.Among other things, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/median-household-incomes-just-rose-first-time-since-2007-2016-9">the report noted</a> that median household incomes rose for the first time since 2007 (and saw the largest increase on record, no less), and the US saw the largest annual percentage point decrease in poverty since 1999.But, notably, the report also included some data on two striking differences between households in metropolitan areas - <a href="http://www.census.gov/population/metro/">big cities and their surrounding counties</a> - and households outside of metropolitan areas in the last year.The two big takeaways are:1. Metro areas saw real median household incomes surge, while non-metro areas did not.The US Census notes that households in metro areas saw a 6.0% increase for median incomes from 2014 to 2015 from $55,920 to $59,258, and those of households in "principal cities of metropolitan areas" surged by 7.3% in the same time frame. Also, regions in metro areas but outside the principal cities - mostly suburban households - had the highest median income of $64,144.Meanwhile, households outside of metro areas - that is, in rural areas or small towns - did not see a statistically significant change in median income. Plus, households outside metro areas had the lowest median income of $44,657.2. Metro areas saw poverty drop, while non-metro areas did not.The US Census reported that the poverty rate in metropolitan statistical areas dropped to 13.0% in 2015, down from 14.5% in 2014; the number of metro area residents in poverty dropped to 35.7 million from 38.4 million. Big cities are starting to recover from the Great Recession, but rural areas are still having a hard time

The young and educated are interested in more than just a hefty paycheck.&#xa0;
In a new&#xa0;<a href="https://www.aier.org/edi">report</a>&#xa0;on the top destinations for young college graduates, the <a href="https://www.aier.org/">American Institute for Economic Research</a> finds young people are drawn to city amenities in addition to jobs.
The rankings examined eight economic and quality-of-life factors that young people look for in a new city, the top three factors being: high density of people with a college degree, a low unemployment rate, and the ability to get around the city without a car.
The other factors included: average salary, cost of rent, competition for jobs,&#xa0;bars and restaurants per 1,000 residents, and racial and ethnic diversity.

Washington, DC topped the list&#xa0;of most desirable large cities for educated young people. The report defined young educated people as those 22 to 35 years old with at least a bachelor's degree, and it defined "large" cities as those having metro areas with at least 1 million people.
Here are the top 10 major cities for young educated people:
<h3 class="p1">10. Raleigh, North Carolina</h3>
Metro area population: 1.2 million&#xa0;Surrounded by strong schools such as Duke, located in Durham, Wake Forest in Winston Salem, and UNC Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, it's no surprise that Raleigh would appeal to young, educated people.
Back in 2011, BloombergBusiness ranked Raleigh <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/bw/lifestyle/which-is-americas-best-city-09202011.html">the best place to live in America</a> due to its ample green space and "thriving social scene."
<h3 class="p1">9. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota</h3>
Metro area&#xa0;population: 3.5 million&#xa0;The writer Matthew Yglesias has summed up why Minneapolis would be the perfect place for young people; <a href="9.%20Minneapolis-St.%20Paul,%20MN%20%20Population:%203,503,424.%20Only%205.4%%20of%20the%20labor%20force%20is%20unemployed%20in%20Minneapolis,%20making%20it%20one%20of%20the%20more%20economically%20appealing%20cities.%20">incomes are relatively high there and the cost of living is low</a>. "You should move to Minneapolis," he wrote in Slate back in 2012.&#xa0;
<h3 class="p1">8. Austin, Texas</h3>
Metro area population: 1.9 million&#xa0;Austin has an obvious allure for young professionals with its vibrant music and tech scene that culminates every March in <a href="http://sxsw.com/">South by Southwest</a>.&#xa0;The American Institute for Economic Research Report noted that many startups are drawn to Austin's "vibrant" downtown area.
<h3 class="p1">7. Denver, Colorado</h3>
Metro area population: 2.7 million&#xa0;Millennials (those born between 1981 and 1997) now make up the largest population group in metro Denver, a region that experienced "robust job growth" in 2014, <a href="http://www.metrodenver.org/research-reports/economic-forecasts/2015-economic-forecast/">according to the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation</a>.
<h3 class="p1">6. Seattle, Washington</h3>
Metro area population:&#xa0;3.6 million&#xa0;Residents enjoy a strong social scene with many bars and restaurants to choose from. Seattle has also been called the new "<a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/06/11/seattle-the-new-center-of-a-tech-boom/?_r=0">center of the tech boom</a>," with companies like Amazon and Microsoft bringing many jobs to the area.
<h3 class="p1">5. New York, New York City</h3>
Metro area population: 19.9 million&#xa0;Unsurprisingly, the largest city offers one of the most diverse populations. It also provides an attractive mix of walking, biking, and public transportation;&#xa0;39.1%&#xa0;of commuters are not dependent on a car, the largest percentage out of all cities.
<h3 class="p1">4. San Jose, California</h3>
Metro area population: 1.8 million&#xa0;The paychecks in San Jose are larger than any other major metro, averaging out to&#xa0;$79,331&#xa0;per year for 22- to 35-year-olds.
<h3 class="p1">3. Boston, Massachusetts</h3>
Metro area population: 4.7 million&#xa0;With MIT, Harvard, and Tufts all in the vicinity, Boston is a mecca for some of the world's most educated people.
It's not a surprise that many people educated in Boston would choose to settle down in a city where there's plenty to do and relatively easy to get around without a car. Nearly 20% of commuters don't depend on a car, compared to just 2.6% for Raleigh, which is 10 on this list.

Metro area population: 4.5 million&#xa0;While the median rent in San Francisco is among the highest in the nation at $1,850 per month, it has a booming technology industry and offers high earnings. The average millennial earns&#xa0;$72,622&#xa0;each year.&#xa0;
