Mumbai, <keyword id="44374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindalco" source="Orion">Hindalco</keyword> Industries, the world's largest aluminium rolling and recycling company, on Tuesday said it has signed a technology partnership agreement with Italy-based <keyword id="953451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="metra" source="Orion">Metra</keyword> to manufacture high-speed aluminium rail coaches. The <keyword id="6359480" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aditya-birla" source="Orion">Aditya Birla</keyword> group company in a statement said the partnership is aimed at sharing extrusion and fabrication technology for building high-speed aluminium rail coaches. <br /><br />For the last six decades, Metra has been known for its cutting-edge knowhow in aluminium extrusion, machining and welding, and the collaboration is a pivotal move to bring world-class technology - currently limited to Europe, China, Japan and a few other countries - to the domestic market. <br /><br />"We are joining hands with Metra to introduce a new era of aluminium extrusions for passenger trains in the country," said <keyword id="618140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="satish-pai" source="Orion">Satish Pai</keyword>, Managing Director of Hindalco. <br /><br />"This is in line with our capability building for aluminium in commercial vehicles, freight wagons, electric vehicles and passenger train applications. Our combined expertise will enhance the efficiency, durability and sustainable performance of these trains and set new benchmarks for the domestic rail industry," he added. <br /><br />In the railway sector, extruded aluminium plays a leading role, as it reduces weight of the coaches. <br /><br />"Collaborating with Hindalco presents an exciting opportunity to showcase our capabilities for aluminium extrusion technology on a global stage," Enrico Zampedri, the CEO of Metra, said <br /><br />The Railways is in the midst of a makeover in basic infrastructure such as rail lines and stations as well as the introduction of high-speed air-conditioned carriages. <br /><br />To help make passenger coaches for the Vande Bharat trains, Hindalco plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore for the project and the technology alliance will provide the cutting-edge technology for this effort, Pai said. <br /><br />Toughened high-grade aluminium alloy has emerged as the metal of choice the world over in manufacturing high-speed railway coaches, enabling aesthetic designs and greater speeds because of their lighter weights. Suburban metro systems and high-speed intercity and long-haul rail traffic in Europe, China and Japan use aluminium railcars. <br /><br />While the upfront costs are marginally higher for aluminium railcars, the saving over the longer run including in rail infrastructure and carbon emissions, is significant. The use of aluminium significantly enhances energy efficiency thanks to reduced aerodynamic resistance, transmission loss and causes lower wear and tear to rolling stock. <br /><br />Last October, Hindalco launched the country's first all-aluminium lightweight freight rake, which is not just enabling higher speeds and more payload per trip but will save over 14,500 tonne of CO2 over its lifetime. <br /><br />The company plans to introduce three more designs of freight wagons in the coming months targeting specific commodities such as cement and foodgrain.

It's the middle of the afternoon, and the CSX train is just parked there. Waiting.</p><p>At this stretch of railroad, known as the 75th Street Corridor, that scene plays out day after day. Freight trains spend hours waiting for commuter and Amtrak trains to clear a single intersection, blocking their path and preventing the delivery of goods.</p><p>The corridor sits in an urban neighborhood southwest of downtown Chicago. It's widely considered the worst choke point for rail movement in the city, which is the busiest rail hub in the nation. With hundreds of billions of dollars in goods traveling through Chicago by rail every year, each minute those freight trains are stalled, companies and consumers alike are losing money or being forced to spend more for the goods those trains haul.</p><p>Down the track from the stationary CSX train, a Metra commuter train rumbles through the worst part of the corridor: Forest Hill Junction, a six-track intersection shared by Amtrak, commuter, and freight rail. A few minutes later, another Metra train rolls through. Because these commuter trains run perpendicular to the track the freight train uses - and almost always have the right of way - the freight has to wait.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Stern</span></p><p class="caption">The cause of so many delays: the Forest Hill Junction.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"It really is the Gordian knot of Chicago that has to be untangled," Tom Livingston, a CSX vice president for government affairs, told Business Insider. "It would be like two major interstates meeting each other at a four-way stop sign."</p><p>After a half hour or so, a whistle rings out. The freight train shudders and groans as the conductor nudges it into motion. Finally, slowly, it's back on its way, moving goods through the city.</p><p>"It really is impactful on the entire nation in terms of moving traffic through," Livingston said. "You have freight moving at every point on the compass, and a lot of it."</p><h3>'The Super Bowl of freight rail'</h3><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Chicago Department of Transportation" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5791038d88e4a7f4328b99c7-960/projareamapsnewlarge.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.75thcip.org/projmaplarge.html">Chicago Department of Transportation</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>This might not sound like a huge problem - most people probably prefer their commutes take precedence over freight rail movements.</p><p>The mess of an intersection, however, takes on outsized importance given its location.</p><p>Chicago is the rail capital of the country. About 40% of the ton-miles (freight tonnage multiplied by distance traveled) that freight travels in this country goes by rail, and nearly one-third of that goes through Chicago.</p><p>"There's no other mode of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> where a third of something goes anywhere," Livingston said. "You can do everything right everywhere else, from sea to shining sea, on our network, and Chicago is the goal line. And you can't fumble on the goal line."</p><p>Freight rail is divided into three classifications, with Class I being the largest and including national operators like CSX and Union Pacific. Chicago is the only place in the country where six of the seven Class I operators interconnect. That's why Livingston refers to the city as "the Super Bowl of freight rail."</p><p>The overlap, while vital, leads to massive congestion and costly delays.</p><p>An <a href="https://www.Amtrak.com/ccurl/978/381/Amtrak-Chicago-Gateway-Railway-Capactiy-Constraints.pdf">Amtrak study</a> of the Chicago rail problem found that a train shipment spends an average of <strong>30 hours</strong> traversing the Chicago region. To put that into context, freight often takes 48 hours to get from Los Angeles to Chicago.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Stern</span></p><p class="caption">CSX's freight train stretches into the distance as it traverses the Forest Hill Junction.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In real, economic terms, the Chicago rail hub could potentially affect somewhere between <strong>$657 billion and $799 billion annually</strong>, according to the same Amtrak study. That figure, however, has been disputed by "an economist who once served as a lead planner for the Chicago region." The study isn't "junk, but that $800 billion number is just absurd," he said, according to <a href="http://www.railwayage.com/index.php/passenger/intercity/blue-ribbon-panel-how-to-unclog-chicago.html">Railway Age</a>.</p><p>Even if that number is overblown, freight rail <em>did</em> move <strong>1.7 billion tons of freight</strong> valued at <strong>$427 billion</strong> in 2010, the last year for which <a href="http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/freight_analysis/nat_freight_stats/docs/11factsfigures/pdfs/fff2011_highres.pdf">data was available</a>. Given that almost one-third of that travels through Chicago, the economic effects of delays are huge.</p><p>And these aren't just abstract costs. Rail ships many of the bulk products and household goods consumers rely on: car parts, grain, natural gas, UPS packages, you name it. When rail shipments are held up, those costs can be passed to the consumer.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sam Rega</span></p><p class="caption">Waiting for the CSX train to move.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>Founding Create</h3><p>To alleviate the problems intersections like these pose to freight companies, travelers, commuters, and consumers, the rail companies banded together with Amtrak, Metra, the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois, and the US Department of Transportation to found <a href="http://www.createprogram.org/">The Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program</a>, or Create.</p><p>Create identified 70 projects throughout the Chicago metro region that, when completed, could drastically reduce delays and better manage congestion.</p><p>Englewood Junction, on the south side of Chicago <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?ll=41.780168%2C-87.628702&amp;spn=0.003615%2C0.005681&amp;msa=0&amp;mid=1rirE4GhUm9P-BGD-_NmCMlQYnE8">near I-94 and 63rd Street</a>, used to be the worst choke point in the region. So Create <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XMIY_T_agA">built a flyover</a> - basically an overpass that carries one train over another in a different direction. The Englewood flyover separated 46 freight trains, 78 Metra trains, and 14 Amtrak trains that pass through daily and eliminated 7,500 annual hours of delays for commuters, <a href="http://www.createprogram.org/factsheets/P1_new.pdf">according to Create</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_mz3jD6sM&amp;feature=youtu.be">Brian Jackson</a></span></p><p class="caption">The Englewood flyover separates train traffic.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A similar solution could unclog the 75th Street Corridor. The proposed flyover would eliminate conflicts between 30 Metra commuter trains and 35 freight trains every day. But the project can't proceed unless Create secures the necessary funding.</p><p>A lack of investment in infrastructure projects like this one has become all too common in the US. America spends <a href="https://data.oecd.org/chart/4Azj">far less a percentage of its gross domestic product on infrastructure</a> than many of its economic rivals, and consumers everywhere can feel the effects of that divestment. The 75th Street Corridor is a perfect example of how that oversight harms the economy.</p><p>America's future competitiveness in a global economy depends on its ability to move a tremendous amount of goods around the country. <p>A woman walked away without injury after her car was hit by a train in a Chicago suburb, and the collision was caught on video.</p>
<p><a href="http://ktla.com/2014/02/19/terrifying-collision-between-train-and-car-caught-on-video/#axzz2tmLWi13J" target="_blank">According to KTLA</a>, the car was stuck in the snow on the tracks in Des Plaines, Ill., and the woman was trying to move as the Metra commuter train approached.</p>

<p>A convenient public <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> system is often a big part of what motivates people to move into particular neighborhoods and cities. </p>
<p>And <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">according to Walk Score</a>, living near public transportation could have more benefits than you think. Homes within walking distance of transit systems <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">tend to outperform</a> others in the region, while commuters <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">save money</a> when they don't have to pay to own and maintain a car. </p>
<p>Research has even shown that living near good public transit <a href="http://www.theatlanticcities.com/commute/2013/09/living-near-good-transit-may-make-you-happier/6867/">could make you happier</a>. </p>
<p>In their most recent ranking of the country's public transportation systems, Walk Score took data from 316 U.S. cities and thousands of neighborhoods and assigned a "Transit Score" to each. </p>
<p>The Transit Scores consider frequency, type of route, and distance between stops, but system efficiency is notably missing. Scores were scaled out of a possible 100 points. </p>
<p>Overall, Transit Scores for cities outside of the top five were surprisingly low, which raises questions about the state of the country's mass transportation in general. Older cities in the Northeast with established systems tended to score higher, though some West Coast cities investing in their transit also did relatively well in the rankings. </p>
<h3>10. Portland (Transit Score: 49.6)<strong><br /></strong></h3>
<p>Portland ranked in the top 10 due to its bus and light rail systems, but it's best known for being a <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/OR/Portland">haven for walkers</a> and cyclists. </p>

<p>Given Los Angeles' notorious traffic, it's pretty surprising to see this city coming in at the number 9 slot. However, the City of Angels <a href="http://www.metro.net/news/facts-glance/">has a huge bus ridership</a>, and <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-crenshaw-groundbreaking-20140122,0,677356.story#axzz2rpEHqnvn">billions of dollars</a> are being funneled into expanding the light-rail network. <a href="http://www.metro.net/news/facts-glance/"></a></p>
<h3>8. Baltimore (Transit Score: 56.9)</h3>
<p>With 105 bus routes (including the new, green <a href="http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2014/jan/19/baltimore-american-history-your-fingertips/">Charm City Circulator</a>), plus light rail and ferry options, Baltimore is fairly easy to get around. </p>
<h3>7. Seattle (Transit Score: 57.3) </h3>
<p>Extensive <a href="http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2013/11/capitol-hill-to-uw-light-rail-station-in-3-minutes-on-track-for-early-2016-opening/">plans to expand</a> the Sound Transit light rail line over the next couple of years means that Seattle's public transportation system will continue to improve. </p>

<p>Chicago's neighborhoods are connected by the "L" and Metra Rail systems. The Windy City is also friendly to walkers, earning a respectable <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/IL/Chicago">walkability score of 75</a>. </p>
<h3>5. Philadelphia (Transit Score: 67)</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.walkscore.com/PA/Philadelphia">SEPTA operates</a> a variety of different services, including buses, light rail, trolleys, and two subway lines, and the city is very walkable. </p>
<h3>4. Washington, D.C. (Transit Score: 70.4)</h3>
<p>The Metrorail is <a href="http://www.apta.com/resources/statistics/Documents/FactBook/2013-APTA-Fact-Book.pdf">one of the busiest</a> rapid transit rail systems in the country. The city is also in the midst of a 6-year <a href="http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/docs/metrofacts.pdf">rebuilding program</a> that aims to improve the public transportation experience with new lighting, signs, and cars. </p>
<h3>3. Boston (Transit Score: 74.8)</h3>
<p>Boston's Green Line is home to the <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/MA/Boston">oldest subway tunnel</a> in the country. Today's rail and bus lines are very convenient for commuters, plus it's rated the third most walkable city in the U.S. </p>
