The approval granted by the US Food &amp; Drug Administration (US FDA) is for Fluphenazine Hydrochloride tablets of strengths 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg, Glenmark said in a statement. These are the generic versions of Prolixin tablets in same strengths of Apothecon Inc, it added. The company's Fluphenazine Hydrochloride tablets will be distributed in the US by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc, USA, it said. For the 12 months ended September 2023, Prolixin tablets in the same strengths achieved annual sales of approximately USD 18.1 million, Glenmark said citing IQVIA data. (This copy will be updated)

To deepen understanding of the relationship between adolescents' use of smartphones and health, the team from Hanyang University Medical Center, Korea analysed data on more than 50,000 adolescent participants. The data included the approximate number of daily hours each participant spent on a smartphone as well as various health measures. The statistical analysis employed propensity score matching to help account for other factors that could be linked to health outcomes, such as age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Adolescents who used a smartphone for more than four hours per day had higher rates of stress, thoughts of suicide, and substance use than those with usage below four hours per day. However, adolescents who used a smartphone one to two hours per day encountered fewer problems than adolescents who did not use a smartphone at all, revealed the findings published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE. The authors note that this study does not confirm a causal relationship between smartphone use and adverse health outcomes. Nonetheless, the findings could help inform usage guidelines for adolescents -- especially if daily usage continues to rise. "This research shows the impact of using smart devices for more than four hours a day on adolescent health," said Jin-Hwa Moon and Jong Ho Cha of Hanyang. "The adverse effects of smartphone overuse became prominent after 4 hours of daily usage time. These results can help establish smart device usage guidelines and education programmes for appropriate media use," they added.

Brian Rice's stability - originally raised by a fellow Baltimore police officer who is the mother of his child - led deputies to confiscate his guns and contact high-ranking police officials, the report says.Baltimore's chief prosecutor, Marilyn J. Rice lived in the county, about 35 miles northwest of Baltimore.Deputies reported that Rice appeared "normal and soft spoken" and said he had been seeking "sympathy and attention." But citing "credible information," the deputies confiscated both his official and personal guns, called his commanding officer and transported Rice to the Carroll Hospital Center. The weapons included his .40-caliber police pistol, a 9 mm handgun, an AK-47-style rifle, a .22-caliber rifle and two shotguns.It was not immediately clear how long Rice was at the hospital or whether he went on his own accord. Rice declined to speak with the AP or discuss allegations in a subsequent court filing that he had behaved in erratic or threatening ways toward the mother of his child or her then-husband. Merely 8% of the respondents knew if their health insurance covers mental health. </li><li>India witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide.</li></ul>As India observes the <keyword id="57200" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Mental-Health-Day">World Mental Health Day</keyword> on October 10, a recent study of “Access to care, awareness &amp; attitudes towards mental health in India” says that nearly one in six people suffer from some form of mental health issues. Yet, the country lacks awareness on mental health and related disorders. Over half of the Indians are unlikely to recognise the symptoms of mental disorders and people suffering from mental illness, shows the analysis from the study published by Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences (CIMBS), and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). “Surprisingly, even amongst those who had close interactions with a person with mental illness, 35% thought mental health issues were uncommon suggesting conversations on mental illness remain taboo. This could possibly be explained by 41% of those who had a person with mental illness amongst their near and dear ones feeling that other people were insensitive and likely to ridicule a patient,” said Dr Sunil Mittal, who was the principal investigator of the study. The National Mental Health survey of 2016 predicts that roughly 13.7% lifetime prevalence of mental illness among Indians. And, over 150 million are in need of active intervention. However, merely one in every four individuals felt that the government provided adequate support to persons with mental illness. “The nature of the caregivers’ role is invisible and complex, much like mental illness itself. The entire journey is laden with fears, insecurities, trauma, isolation and dysfunctionality. To add to it, the new laws do not cater to the concerns and needs of caregivers and their voice,” said Mitali Srivastava, Senior Psychologist at CIMBS. Lack of awareness and suicides Even when they aware, Indians do not know how to cure themselves. Merely 8% of the respondents knew if their insurance covered mental health. India witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Yet, almost 30% people did not consider suicide to be associated with mental illness — which explains the less likelihood of intervention. “There is a need for well-thought guidelines for a participatory approach to encourage non-governmental and private entities, and address concerns regarding medico-legal issues in mental health service delivery. Without which, it is difficult to bridge the huge treatment gap that exists today. Also, innovation and adoption of technology like tele-medicine need to be promoted,” said lawyer Mrinal Kanwar. The survey analysed responses from over 10,000 individuals across seven states in India. One in six Indians suffer from mental health issues, and are unaware of it

Setting up of a mental health advisory panel, school based mental health programme and pedagogical support to ensure mental well- being of students and engaging parents are among the guidelines issued by <keyword id="48505" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ncert" source="Orion">NCERT</keyword> for schools. The guidelines for "Early identification and intervention for <keyword id="24492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health-problems" source="Orion">mental health problems</keyword> in school going children and adolescents" have been released by the <keyword id="440822" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-council-of-educational-research" source="Orion">National Council of Educational Research</keyword> and Training (NCERT) following a mental health survey among school children. The survey report launched last week cited exams, results and peer pressure among major factors for <keyword id="3873792" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stress-and-anxiety" source="Orion">stress and anxiety</keyword> among school students. "Schools generally are seen as spaces where communities of learners have been expected to develop in a safe and secure environment. School management, principal, teachers, other staff, and students all spend around 1/3 of a day and around 220 days in a year in schools across the states and UTs in India. For residential schools, the time spent by a student in the school community is even more. Therefore, it is the school's responsibility to ensure the safety, security, health, and well-being of all children in schools and hostels," the guidelines read. According to the manual, every school or groups of schools should establish a mental health advisory panel. "It should be chaired by the principal and have teachers, parents, students and alumni as members. It will create awareness, and also plan and enforce an age and gender appropriate annual school mental health programme. The schools should have a provision for identifying behaviour, substance use and self-harm, depression, and developmental concerns, provide first aid and make appropriate referrals," it said. Noting that most of the time mental health issues emerge at an early stage of life as half of all mental health conditions emerge by the time individuals are 14 years old and three-quarters by the age of 25, NCERT has recommended that apart from families and parents, teachers need to be informed about early flag signs as they too are the primary caregivers. "Teachers must be trained in identifying early signs in students for attachment issues, separation anxiety, school refusal, communication issues, anxiety patterns, depressive states, conduct related issues, excessive internet use, hyperactivity, intellectual disability, and learning disabilities, it said. "Teachers should talk about bullying cases in class and empower students by educating them regarding bullying. They should provide a confidential way for students to report any incident which is of concern to them," the manual said. NCERT issues guidelines to schools for early identification of mental health problems in students

They called for increasing accessibility to mental health resources, raising <keyword id="19927137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="awareness" source="keywords">awareness</keyword>, reducing <keyword id="20448786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stigma" source="keywords">stigma</keyword> and developing robust support systems to tackle the issue while also highlighting the need to find comprehensive solutions to contributing factors such as work pressure and societal expectations, among others. "Mental health problems are an unaddressed health crisis in India. Nearly 20 per cent of people live with mental health problems in India. Depression and anxiety are common causes of disability. There is a treatment gap of more than 80 per cent," Achal Bhagat, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, said. The indirect economic cost of loss of livelihoods due to mental health is significantly high as it is not only for the person living with mental health problems but also due to the loss of livelihoods for the caregivers, he added. Expressing similar views, Shambhavi Jaiman, Consultant Psychiatrist at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said the impact on productivity is substantial, reflecting the broader implications for societal well-being and economic stability. "The contributing factors - work pressure, societal expectations, financial worries, and insufficient support systems - create a complex web of stressors that require comprehensive solutions," she added. Jaiman said addressing mental health issues involves increasing accessibility to mental health resources, raising awareness, reducing stigma and developing robust support systems. "Creating a supportive environment where mental health is prioritised is essential for fostering a healthier, more productive society," she said. Sameer Malhotra, Senior Director and Head Dept of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, pointed out that factors such as growing consumerism, excessive competition, shrinking social and family support networks, increased pace of life and growing distress, timeline pressures, lesser time for self and family are driving rise in mental health problems globally. "Disturbed mindset influences concentration, productivity at work and economics as well," he added. The Economic Survey 2023-24 flagged a rise in mental health issues among Indians, calling for a paradigm shift towards a bottom-up, whole-of-community approach to address the problem. Although it noted that India is creating positive momentum in policy development by recognising mental health as a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, the survey said, "While most of the policy design is in place, proper implementation can accelerate the improvement on the ground. That said, there remain certain gaps in the existing programmes which need to be addressed to maximise their effectiveness". The fundamental issue of the lack of awareness about mental health and the stigma surrounding it can render any sincerely crafted programme unfeasible, it added. "Hence, there is a need to bring about a paradigm shift and utilise a bottom-up, whole-of-community approach in addressing the topic of mental health. Breaking the stigma starts with taking cognisance of the natural human tendency to accept physical ailments and seeking treatment for the same while being in denial about mental health issues," the survey said. To an extent, the denial is an outcome of fear about social attitudes and social acceptance after one 'comes out' with mental health issues, it said. "For public health officials, tackling mental health requires acknowledging and addressing this fundamental reluctance. Arguably, mental health issues drag down productivity more widely in the ecosystem than individuals' physical health issues. Hence, paying attention to mental health issues in society is both a health and an economic imperative," the document noted.

Terre Haute (US), Jul 15 (AP) The man next on the list to be executed by the federal government after a nearly 20-year hiatus ended this week may have a better chance of avoiding lethal injection, legal experts say, because he suffers from dementia and so, his lawyers say, can no longer grasp why he's slated to die. Wesley Ira Purkey, convicted of a gruesome 1998 kidnapping and killing, was scheduled for execution Wednesday at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Daniel Lewis Lee was put to death Tuesday after his own 11th-hour legal bids failed. Lee, who was convicted of killing an Arkansas family in a 1990s plot to build a whites-only nation, was the first of four condemned men scheduled to die in July and August despite the coronavirus pandemic raging both inside and outside prisons. Purkey, 68, of Lansing, Kansas, would be the second, but his lawyers were still expected to press for a ruling from the Supreme Court on his competency. "This competency issue is a very strong issue on paper," said Robert Dunham, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center. "The Supreme Court has halted executions on this issue in the past. At a minimum, the question of whether Purkey dies is going to go down to the last minute." Lee's own execution went forward a day late. It was scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, but the Supreme Court only gave the green light in a narrow 5-4 ruling early Tuesday. The issue of Purkey's mental health arose in the runup to his 2003 trial and when, after the verdict, jurors had to decide whether he should be put to death in the killing of 16-year-old Jennifer Long in Kansas City, Missouri. Prosecutors alleged that he raped and stabbed her, dismembered her with a chainsaw, burned her, then dumped her ashes 200 miles (320 kilometers) away in a septic pond in Kansas. Purkey was separately convicted and sentenced to life in the beating death of 80-year-old Mary Ruth Bales, of Kansas City, Kansas. But the legal questions of whether he was mentally fit to stand trial or to be sentenced to die are different from the question of whether he is mentally fit enough now, in the hours before his scheduled execution, to be put to death. Purkey's lawyers argue he clearly is not, saying in recent filings that he suffers from advancing Alzheimer's disease. "He has long accepted responsibility for the crime that put him on death row," one of this lawyers, Rebecca Woodman, said. "But as his dementia has progressed, he no longer has a rational understanding of why the government plans to execute him." Purkey believes his planned execution is part of a vast conspiracy involving his own attorneys, Woodman said. In other filings, they describe delusions that people were spraying poison into his room and that drug dealers implanted a device in his chest meant to kill him. While various legal issues in Purkey's case have been hashed, rehashed and settled by courts over nearly two decades, the issue of mental fitness for execution can only be addressed once a date is set, according to Dunham, who also teaches law school courses on capital punishment. A date was only set last year. "Competency is something that is always in flux," so judges can only assess it in the weeks or days before a firm execution date, he said. In a landmark 1986 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution prohibits putting someone to death who lacks a reasonable understanding of why he is being executed. It involved the case of Alvin Ford, who was convicted of murder but whose mental health deteriorated behind bars to the point where, according to his lawyer, he believed he was pope. Legal standards as to whether someone has a rational understanding of why an execution is taking place can be complex, Dunham explained. "I could say I was Napoleon," he said. "But if I say I understand that Napoleon was sentenced to death for a crime and is being executed for it - that could allow the execution to go ahead." Purkey's mental issues go beyond Alzheimer's, his lawyers have said. They say he was subject to sexual and mental abuse as a child and, at 14, was diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and psychosis. Last week, three mental health organizations urged U.S. Attorney William Barr to stop Purkey's execution and commute his sentence to life in prison without possibility of parole. The letter - signed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mental Health America and the Treatment Advocacy Center - said that executing mentally ailing individuals like Purkey "constitutes cruel and unusual punishment and does not comport with 'evolving standards of decency.'" The mother of the teen he killed, Glenda Lamont, told the Kansas City Star last year she planned to attend the execution. "I don't want to say that I'm happy," Lamont said. "At the same time, he is a crazy mad man that doesn't deserve, in my opinion, to be breathing anymore." Companies have an opportunity to provide meaningful help to employees coping with mental health issues

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been ordered to curtail its usage of pepper spray and isolation when dealing with the 33,000 mentally ill prisoners in the California prison system.
The ruling found such tactics qualified as "cruel and unusual" punishment.
Video evidence shows guards "throwing chemical grenades and pumping large amounts of pepper spray into the cells of mentally ill inmates, some of whom are heard screaming," <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/judge-california-mistreating-mentally-ill-inmates">the Associated Press reported</a>.
The order was issued Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton, who called the videos "horrific."
The recordings were "created by guards abiding by a state policy to record all cell extractions," the Los Angeles Times <a href="ttp://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-pc-prison-inmate-pepper-spray-20131031,0,5296924.story" target="_blank">explained</a>.
In addition to prohibiting the excessive usage of pepper spray, the judge said that corrections officials must stop housing mentally ill inmates in isolated security units simply because other prison housing is too full.
The judge agreed with inmates' attorneys, who argued that isolating mentally ill prisoners when they haven't broken prison rules causes serious psychological harm, worsens mental issues, and increases the risk of suicide.
State corrections officials will not be required to completely eliminate usage of pepper spray and isolation, but they have 60 days to revise their policies on use of force, segregating prisoners, and strip-searching inmates as they enter and leave prison housing. They had already agreed to make some changes, but the inmates' attorneys said these changes were insufficient.
Mentally ill prisoners make up 28 percent of California's 120,000 inmates.

<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image">Handout via ReutersAaron Alexis</div></div>Why was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aaron-alexis-police-report-shooter-newport-rhode-island-voices-mental-health-2013-9" target="_blank">man with a troubled history of mental issues</a> and at least two prior arrests dealing with guns able to purchase a firearm the weekend before he killed 12 people and wounded 14 others in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-there-is-an-active-shooter-at-washington-dc-yard-2013-9" target="_blank">Washington Navy Yard massacre</a>?
The answer lies in how Aaron Alexis, the 34-year-old alleged shooter, managed to exploit state and federal gun laws. 
Alexis bought a shotgun, the main firearm he allegedly used in the massacre, at Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Va. on Saturday, <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/shooting-reignites-gun-talk-bills-still-cold" target="_blank">according to a statement</a> from J. Michael Slocum, the attorney for the gun range.
He was able to buy a shotgun in Virginia with out-of-state identification, even though federal laws would have prevented him from buying a handgun under the same circumstances. 
The law that made this possible is the 1986 Firearms Owners' Protection Act, which allowed for the interstate sales of rifles and shotguns.
Here's the <a href="http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d099:SN00049:@@@L&amp;summ2=m&amp;" target="_blank">relevant portion of the law's summary</a>:
Permits the interstate sale of rifles and shotguns, provided: (1) the transferee and transferor meet in person to accomplish the transfer; and (2) such sale complies with the laws of both States. Presumes the licensee to have actual knowledge of the laws of both States.
According to Slocum, Alexis also passed a federal background check. Virginia's <a href="http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-308.2C2" target="_blank">background check laws</a> ask if applicants have ever been convicted of a felony offense (Alexis had not); if anyone had an outstanding restraining order against Alexis (also no); and if the applicant is "mentally incapacitated" or "been involuntarily admitted to an inpatient facility or involuntarily ordered to outpatient mental health treatment."
Federal background check laws also require that the applicant has been involuntarily committed to a mental-health facility or declared mentally ill by a judge. 
This is key in the case of Alexis, who family members have said was undergoing treatment for a variety of issues, including hearing voices in his head and having sleep problems. As recently as August, police in Newport, R.I., responded to his claims of three people following him and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aaron-alexis-police-report-shooter-newport-rhode-island-voices-mental-health-2013-9#ixzz2fFgPbswZ" target="_blank">using "some sort of microwave machine" to send vibrations through his body."</a> 
But he was never declared mentally unfit by the <keyword id="42407" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy">Navy</keyword>, and he was never declared mentally ill by a judge. 
<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/18/us/state-law-stopped-gunman-from-buying-rifle-officials-say.html" target="_blank">According to the New York Times</a>, Alexis also tried to buy an AR-15 assault-style rifle. In that case, Virginia state law prevented him from buying one because of his out-of-state status.
