<ul><li>One in every six people in India suffer from some form of <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> issues, says a recent study of “Access to care, awareness and attitudes towards mental health in India.” </li><li>Over half of the Indians are unlikely to recognise the symptoms of mental disorders and people suffering from mental illness. </li><li>Lack of awareness explains misconceptions on mental disorders in India. Merely 8% of the respondents knew if their health insurance covers mental health. </li><li>India witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide.</li></ul>As India observes the <keyword id="57200" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Mental-Health-Day">World Mental Health Day</keyword> on October 10, a recent study of “Access to care, awareness &amp; attitudes towards mental health in India” says that nearly one in six people suffer from some form of mental health issues. Yet, the country lacks awareness on mental health and related disorders. Over half of the Indians are unlikely to recognise the symptoms of mental disorders and people suffering from mental illness, shows the analysis from the study published by Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences (CIMBS), and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). “Surprisingly, even amongst those who had close interactions with a person with mental illness, 35% thought mental health issues were uncommon suggesting conversations on mental illness remain taboo. This could possibly be explained by 41% of those who had a person with mental illness amongst their near and dear ones feeling that other people were insensitive and likely to ridicule a patient,” said Dr Sunil Mittal, who was the principal investigator of the study. The National Mental Health survey of 2016 predicts that roughly 13.7% lifetime prevalence of mental illness among Indians. And, over 150 million are in need of active intervention. However, merely one in every four individuals felt that the government provided adequate support to persons with mental illness. “The nature of the caregivers’ role is invisible and complex, much like mental illness itself. The entire journey is laden with fears, insecurities, trauma, isolation and dysfunctionality. To add to it, the new laws do not cater to the concerns and needs of caregivers and their voice,” said Mitali Srivastava, Senior Psychologist at CIMBS. Lack of awareness and suicides Even when they aware, Indians do not know how to cure themselves. Merely 8% of the respondents knew if their insurance covered mental health. India witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Yet, almost 30% people did not consider suicide to be associated with mental illness — which explains the less likelihood of intervention. “There is a need for well-thought guidelines for a participatory approach to encourage non-governmental and private entities, and address concerns regarding medico-legal issues in mental health service delivery. Without which, it is difficult to bridge the huge treatment gap that exists today. Also, innovation and adoption of technology like tele-medicine need to be promoted,” said lawyer Mrinal Kanwar. The survey analysed responses from over 10,000 individuals across seven states in India. However, <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2751330">Pediatrics analysis</a> says the question “how much” time is being spent may be wrong all along since most of the teenagers are online almost all the time. Extreme shortage of psychiatrists To ensure the health of the vast number of teens and others in India, the government has been allocating money for it in the Budget. Last year, however, the National Mental Health Programme 2019-20 was down to ₹40 crore from <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/budget/budget-2019-modi-government-must-invest-to-improve-mental-disorder-treatment-in-india/1613270/">₹50 crore the previous year</a>. Added to that, India is short of psychiatrists and experts to deal with this crisis. According to World Health Organisation, India had 0·301 psychiatrists, 0·166 nurses, and 0·047 psychologists against 100,000 mental-disorder patients in 2011. In simple words, a single psychiatrist is treating 332,225 patients. How much India understands mental illness According to the WHO, 200 million people -- one in every five -- in India may suffer from depression at least once in their lifetime.It also tagged India as the most depressed country in the world, with 6.5% of the population suffering from severe mental health issues. Mental stigma along with lack of awareness deprives 82% of sufferers from seeking help. According to a recent survey, as many as 56% of Indians described people who talk to themselves, as mentally ill. Other 9% said mental illness is the same as depression. And 20% of respondents said people who call themselves crazy, stupid or mad are mentally ill. World Mental Health Day: Ex-Google employee shares tips on protecting mental health at workplace, says he experienced stress and anxiety

Victor Schwartz, the Jed Foundation's medical director, said that addressing <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> concerns could help students academically, as well as prevent self-harm.
"When you look at the admissions office, most everyone has the SAT points and the IQ points for the college work they're faced with. So more often than not, why someone is struggling in school, what you find is social problems, family problems, emotional problems, not handling all these things effectively," he said.
According to USA Today, <a href="http://www.jedcampus.org/">the JedCampus seal</a> is based on a number of campus offerings, including "free access to the gym, free counseling and physical health services, crisis programs, restricted access to hazardous or illegal materials, [and] early identification of students with problems."

Meet the startups tackling youth mental health

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Michael Huseby is the CEO of Barnes and Noble <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">Education</keyword>, which partners with colleges.</li><li>As <keyword id="11902572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> suffers during COVID-19, he says schools can help by improving student resources.</li></ul>After a tumultuous two years through the pandemic, we're now seeing the longer-term effects social isolation and school closures have had on America's <keyword id="11897978" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="students" source="Orion">students</keyword>. <div type="image" title="Barnes and Noble Education CEO Mike Huseby" height="1084" width="1446" msid="89025360" hostid="261"></div>While <a href="https://www2.ed.gov/documents/students/supporting-child-student-social-emotional-behavioral-mental-health.pdf">data</a> has been released on the mental health of younger children, there's been little on the state of mental health among <keyword id="11956253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="college" source="Orion">college</keyword> attendees, and thus less focus on how universities and colleges can meet their students' mental-health needs.As the CEO of Barnes and Noble Education, an organization that serves more than 850 higher-education institutions, I'm constantly working with my team to understand how college students learn, study, and socialize. In November 2021, our research platform <keyword id="12998337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="barnes-noble" source="Orion">Barnes &amp; Noble</keyword> College Insights surveyed 1,116 college students to create a report, "<a href="https://www.bncollege.com/insight/student-mental-health/">The State of Student Mental Health</a>."When asked if their college provided resources for mental health and student well-being, nearly seven in 10 respondents said their campus did provide resources and five in 10 respondents said they felt those resources would be helpful to them.However, many of the students who acknowledged their campus provided support said they rarely or never take advantage of the resources. This statistic made me wonder — why are students who know their campus provides helpful mental-health resources not taking advantage of them? One reason may be the stigma that continues to surround mental health. The Biden administration's October 2021 <a href="https://www2.ed.gov/documents/students/supporting-child-student-social-emotional-behavioral-mental-health.pdf">mental-health report</a> included a section on the perceived stigma of mental health and how it acts as a barrier to accessing available services. The report said that "perceived public stigma is one of the major reasons people, including children, adolescents, and families, do not seek mental health care."Knowing that the perceived stigma of mental health is potentially stopping students from getting the assistance they need, here are three ways colleges and universities can help.<h2>1. Seek input from students </h2>The best way for administrators to understand how to reshape the student mental-health experience is to listen to their students. At the start of a new year or semester, institutions can send out a survey asking students about their needs and create a mental-health report to provide requested resources.Whether students want group-therapy sessions, campus days with therapy pets, or free subscriptions to online mental-health support, their input is key to creating resources that they'll actually use. <h2>2. Implement mental-health literacy</h2>Scholars and psychologists have <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26643359/">suggested that</a> some negative perceptions of mental health can be reduced through mental-health literacy. Universities can help by providing a free extracurricular "mental health 101" course for students to take during their first year. This course can provide an overview of common mental-health issues and outline the campus resources available to students. Some universities are already implementing this type of program. In a recent conversation with the Florida International University President Mark Rosenberg, he told me the school starting offering "emotional intelligence digital badges" that can be added to students' online credentials to help tell the story of what they've learned to potential employers — beyond their degree. This can help remove negative stigma by encouraging all students to showcase their mental-health knowledge. <h2>3. Offer flexible resources </h2>Just as many college classes moved online due to the pandemic, colleges can offer mental-health resources virtually as well as in person. At Barnes and Noble College, we hope to support our institutional partners by bringing more mental-health resources to our bookstores so students can easily access mental-health information and support within their campus store.As someone who speaks with the college and university leaders every day, I know they see the importance of improving services and support for student mental health. With these improved strategies, colleges and students can work together toward creating a more inclusive higher-education system.

3 ways colleges can help the nation's student mental-health crisis, according to the CEO of Barnes and Noble Education

People who are suicidal or facing mental-health challenges often have to travel as far as San Antonio, which is approximately 85 miles east of Uvalde, to get help, he said."We, as a government, need to find a way to target the mental-health challenge and do something about it," Abbott said, adding that there was a need for a physical mental-health-care facility in the region.Facing a follow-up question on the role of the shooter's mental health, Abbott backtracked a bit, saying someone "demented" enough to kill children went beyond "a mental-health issue." He called the gunman the "sheer face of evil itself.""I'm not a doctor. I can't classify these things, and I don't know the extent that mental health would be able to address someone who has challenges," Abbott said. "There could have been a time earlier in his life where there was a more typical mental-health issue that could have been addressed."He added: "Is there a difference between a mental-health challenge that can be addressed and evil? They called for increasing accessibility to mental health resources, raising <keyword id="19927137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="awareness" source="keywords">awareness</keyword>, reducing <keyword id="20448786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stigma" source="keywords">stigma</keyword> and developing robust support systems to tackle the issue while also highlighting the need to find comprehensive solutions to contributing factors such as work pressure and societal expectations, among others. "Mental health problems are an unaddressed health crisis in India. Nearly 20 per cent of people live with mental health problems in India. Depression and anxiety are common causes of disability. There is a treatment gap of more than 80 per cent," Achal Bhagat, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, said. The indirect economic cost of loss of livelihoods due to mental health is significantly high as it is not only for the person living with mental health problems but also due to the loss of livelihoods for the caregivers, he added. Expressing similar views, Shambhavi Jaiman, Consultant Psychiatrist at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said the impact on productivity is substantial, reflecting the broader implications for societal well-being and economic stability. "The contributing factors - work pressure, societal expectations, financial worries, and insufficient support systems - create a complex web of stressors that require comprehensive solutions," she added. Jaiman said addressing mental health issues involves increasing accessibility to mental health resources, raising awareness, reducing stigma and developing robust support systems. "Creating a supportive environment where mental health is prioritised is essential for fostering a healthier, more productive society," she said. Sameer Malhotra, Senior Director and Head Dept of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, pointed out that factors such as growing consumerism, excessive competition, shrinking social and family support networks, increased pace of life and growing distress, timeline pressures, lesser time for self and family are driving rise in mental health problems globally. "Disturbed mindset influences concentration, productivity at work and economics as well," he added. The Economic Survey 2023-24 flagged a rise in mental health issues among Indians, calling for a paradigm shift towards a bottom-up, whole-of-community approach to address the problem. Although it noted that India is creating positive momentum in policy development by recognising mental health as a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, the survey said, "While most of the policy design is in place, proper implementation can accelerate the improvement on the ground. That said, there remain certain gaps in the existing programmes which need to be addressed to maximise their effectiveness". The fundamental issue of the lack of awareness about mental health and the stigma surrounding it can render any sincerely crafted programme unfeasible, it added. "Hence, there is a need to bring about a paradigm shift and utilise a bottom-up, whole-of-community approach in addressing the topic of mental health. Breaking the stigma starts with taking cognisance of the natural human tendency to accept physical ailments and seeking treatment for the same while being in denial about mental health issues," the survey said. To an extent, the denial is an outcome of fear about social attitudes and social acceptance after one 'comes out' with mental health issues, it said. "For public health officials, tackling mental health requires acknowledging and addressing this fundamental reluctance. Arguably, mental health issues drag down productivity more widely in the ecosystem than individuals' physical health issues. Hence, paying attention to mental health issues in society is both a health and an economic imperative," the document noted.
