It is a tried and true design for a camera, but it does end up being a bit bulkier than simple cameras. For a trip that ranged from the dress code of upscale bars in Paris to lazily biking city streets in the French Riviera, The Claremont worked seamlessly - meaning I also didn't need to waste space packing a second purse.</p><p>For how much it holds, the bag is deceptively small - no bigger than a roomy crossbody. At the airport, it held a small book, phone charger, travel wallet, and keychain inside. Externally, my passport, lip balm, and main cards remained handy in its zipped outside pocket. On long tourist days, it packed lip balm and cards in the external pocket and my DSLR, two extra memory cards, sunglasses, and a small travel wallet inside. </p><p>It's also deceptively lightweight. But, if you're like me, it might be worth it for the usability of a camera bag that's essentially an everyday purse tricked out for a DSLR. However, if you're looking for a camera bag with room to spare, this probably isn't for you. It can fit a small extra lens, but you'll probably have to rearrange things to get your camera out if you're planning to stack sunglasses and a wallet inside as well. For me, this was ultimately a small price to pay for the convenience and look of the bag.</p><p>All in all, the Claremont has been the perfect model of a subtle camera bag, and it's been ideal for someone who wants to use their DSLR often but isn't willing to compromise on style or comfort in order to do so. It's a steep price at $298, but it's worth it to me if you're willing to spend the same amount altogether on a travel crossbody and a camera bag you may be inspired to use far less often. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Throughout the coronavirus crisis, people have had to rely on video apps to include friends and family in milestone moments like engagements, weddings, pregnancies, and births.</li><li>Mexico-based photographer Ana Hinojosa is making this easier by capturing maternity, newborn, and editorial-style photos via <keyword id="10296" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zoom">Zoom</keyword> and <keyword id="358084" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="FaceTime">FaceTime</keyword>.</li><li>Hinojosa swapped the usual DSLR camera she'd use for in-person shoots for a laptop.</li><li>The results are extremely powerful, and have compelled the talented photographer to continue digital photoshoots post-pandemic.</li></ul><p>Without a doubt, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we live, and has even taught some of us to cherish everyday moments.</p><p>Thanks to apps such as Zoom and FaceTime, loved ones have been able to stay connected and share pivotal life milestones such as engagements, weddings, pregnancy announcements, and births.</p><p>Now, Monterrey, Mexico-based photographer <a href="http://www.anahinojosa.com/">Ana Hinojosa</a> is making it even easier.</p><p>With in-person sessions off the cards, Hinojosa is helping people around the globe share these occasions by booking digital photoshoots done solely through an iPhone, laptop, Zoom, or FaceTime.</p><p>Hinojosa told Insider: "These sessions are allowing us to connect and create during the uncertain times we're living in. Love is bigger than ever, special moments are still worthy [of capturing], [and] milestones, celebrations, and everyday life still fill our hearts and form our stories."</p><p><div type="image" title="K 1" height="1592" width="1200" msid="76287562" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>Thinking outside the box</h2><p>Though Hinojosa was surrounded by <keyword id="22383" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="photography">photography</keyword> in her childhood, she didn't begin pursuing it professionally until 10 years ago after switching from a point and click camera to a DSLR.</p><p>She attended a friend's wedding as a guest and shot it for fun. Her friend loved the pictures and hired her for the bigger, legal wedding. From there, Hinojosa began taking on clients.</p><p>Then her plans changed drastically during the coronavirus pandemic, as travel was heavily impacted.</p><p>She was slated to arrive in Spain three weeks ago to stay with friends and meet the couple's newborn baby. Instead, she saw the couple and their baby constantly via FaceTime.</p><p>"I started screenshotting while we were talking with no plan — just like making the baby laugh so I could keep the memory for myself," she said. "Then, my friend and I thought maybe we could do something from a distance."</p><p>Hinojosa's friend picked the best lighting and space in her home for the shoot. Then, the magic happened.</p><p><div type="image" title="TA zoom 0025" height="1605" width="1200" msid="76287567" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The process is surprisingly simple</h2><p>Her photoshoot subjects use an iPhone 11 with WiFi. Hinojosa then navigates the shoot via Zoom and FaceTime to see which app delivers the best results.</p><p>"How it works is I'm on my laptop, I see the person on the iPhone. They should have it on the frontal camera, not selfie mode so they don't see each other, and the camera resolution is better. Then, I do shift/control/3 which is a screenshot," she said.</p><p>Though the digital shoots pose a unique challenge, Hinojosa has loved the outcome so far.</p><p>"I've had to be very patient. 'Put the phone here, do this, get closer,' and so on. I've had to learn it isn't going to be perfect. It is what it is and that's the beauty of it."</p><p>She added: "After the first [Zoom] shoot, I said I'd never do it again."</p><p>However, she had what she called an "itch" to continue with the shoots. Soon after, she did a pregnancy shoot with a Chicago-based couple.</p><p><div type="image" title="2" height="854" width="1200" msid="76287569" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Just letting go of perfection has been it," Hinojosa said, adding that she thrives on the newfound collaboration between client and photographer.</p><p>"Another challenge, but I love it, is opening this door of creation together. You have to be involved. It's no more, 'Just sit there and I'll take the photos.'"</p><h2>'Our lives are still happening inside our lockdown'</h2><p>Ultimately, nostalgia is the primary inspiration for the photos Hinojosa takes.</p><p>"What I see from my story or my parents' story through pictures is something I try to recreate every day," she said. "Now more than ever, that moment is long gone. Now, time feels more elastic than ever. A Mexico-based photographer is using Zoom and FaceTime for stunning photoshoots that look like they were taken in person

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are spoilers for season 11, episode 18 of "The Walking Dead," "A New Deal."</li><li>Teo Rapp-Olsson spoke with Insider about the shocking twist to his character, Sebastian.</li></ul><p>"<a href="https://insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">The Walking Dead</a>" star Teo Rapp-Olsson was just as surprised as anyone to learn about Sunday's big twist from the comics.</p><p>Near the episode's end, Eugene (Josh McDermitt) pushes a walker into Sebastian (Rapp-Olsson) who ultimately bites and kills Governor Milton's son. That's a huge change from the comics where Sebastian doesn't only survive the entire series, but also kills off the series' protagonist, Rick Grimes, in a shocking moment.</p><p>"Honestly for most of my time on the show, I was sitting there theorizing the same way fans were like, 'Ooh, who would I kill? Would it be Aaron or would it be Ezekiel?'" Rapp-Olsson told Insider over a Zoom call on Friday in a discussion about who he thought could take Rick's death.</p><p>(Ross Marquand, who plays Aaron, told Insider that as far as he knows, there <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-ross-marquand-rick-comic-death-lame-2022-10">were never discussions to give his character Rick's comic death</a>, despite him resembling the comic version of Rick at this point.)</p><p>Originally under the belief he would only be on about three episodes of AMC's apocalyptic drama, Rapp-Olsson quickly became a character fans loved to hate as the spoiled son of the Commonwealth leader.</p><p>Insider spoke with the actor about his death episode, how he learned that he was getting killed off (he was being sneaky), how he had to go home commando after getting drenched in walker blood for his death scene, and how he's aware that Sebastian's show death is satisfying for comic fans who were upset with Rick's comic murder.</p><h2>Rapp-Olsson never imagined that Max and Eugene would be responsible for Sebastian's death.</h2><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Max and Eugene" height="2001" width="3000" msid="94749642" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>It takes a lot to surprise me with "The Walking Dead" since I come at it as a comic reader. I gasped when Sebastian was killed, because, as you probably know, Sebastian survives the comics. This is a huge change. Did Sebastian ever think that Max and Eugene would get the upper hand on him? And did you, Teo, ever think that Max and Eugene would get the upper hand?</strong></p><p>No and no. I mean, I guessed when I was reading this script, but it's also just that Max plays this so well. She gets him in such a personal moment where I don't think he is being cruel or evil with what he says to her in his last private speech to her. I think it's actually the closest he's come to the truth.</p><p>He probably trusts her so much that he would be willing to say this to her because there's a certain level of, you watch how the sausage gets made, too. You can't be this naive. You understand that this is a broken system.</p><p>Now we can all agree there might be a reason for it being this broken because, regardless of the morality of all this, this is the largest nation state in the post-apocalyptic world.* Most of these people don't have to deal with zombies on a day-to-day basis. It might not be a great look, I agree, but is it better than the outside world?</p><p><em>[*Editor's note: The Civic Republic Military is technically the largest nation in "TWD" universe right now with over <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-who-are-helicopter-people-crm#the-community-is-comprised-of-over-200000-individuals-4">200,000 inhabitants</a>. The Commonwealth has approximately 50,000 citizens.]</em></p><h2>That close-up shot of Sebastian was a last-minute addition. </h2><p><strong>Does Sebastian regret tossing Max into that walker? Because if he didn't do that, he would probably still be alive. Because of that, Eugene pushes that walker into Sebastian.</strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Max and Sebastian" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749645" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm sure he regrets it in the last couple seconds. The big weakness to Sebastian is he's quite smart. He can be calculated when given the time, but I think in push-comes-to-shove moments, he's impetuous. He's still young.</p><p>And this is a prime example of that. When faced with the recording, he now knows there are no other options. This isn't like before where mom can step in and be like, "Oh, that wasn't my son. That was Hornsby." He's caught red  handed and his first reaction is so primal and simple. I want to grab that person and hurt them.</p><p>There's not even really a plan. It's not like I have a weapon or something. What am I gonna do when I catch her? There happens to be a zombie there. I'm just trying to harm her.</p><p>Let's take a scenario where the zombies don't come in. I'm gonna have to answer for that, too, now. So we're at a point where I think all of this is out the window in terms of what's next on the docket. Once I hear this recording and know I am screwed, I say to her, "You bitch," and I sprint after her with, I think, nothing but the simple intent of harm. And it just so happens for the zombie to land in the way.</p><p><strong>And you feel that because there's that close-up shot of Sebastian charging after Max like a bull. It's kind of terrifying.</strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Sebastian" height="1599" width="2839" msid="94749648" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm so happy you saw that. On the day of shooting, we were about to wrap something and we had — for the first time in recorded film history — two extra minutes of time and the camera department was like, "Hey, we have one of these rigs that we can attach to your chest. Would you have any interest in that?" And I was like, "Yeah, obviously. That sounds really cool."</p><p>We recorded it like twice — literally as everybody's prepping to run to lunch — watch it once on a tiny DSLR LCD monitor and they're like, "That looks really cool. Hopefully, it makes it in, but you never know." Watching [the episode] myself, I was like, "Oh!"</p><h2><strong>Rapp-Olsson found out he was getting killed off the show after poking around and getting a copy of the script</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 sebastian's death" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749651" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>When you learned that Sebastian was going to be killed off "The Walking Dead," often it happens early, but it sounds like this happened as you were reading the script. How early in the process did you know that the show was going to make this massive deviation from the comics? Did you know from the moment that you were cast?</strong></p><p>No.</p><p><strong>Did you learn your fate when reading this episode?</strong></p><p>When I wound up reading it.</p><p>The producers keep a lot of those cards close to their chest and I respect a lot of those aspects because it forces you to play your scenes much more organically.</p><p>Normally, you will get the call from [showrunner] Angela Kang, letting you know the sad news. I was being a nosy actor and had talked to somebody in one of the other departments who was like, "Oh yeah, I got a copy of this script. Crazy things that happened to you." And I was like, "Oh, cool. Crazy things are gonna happen to me."</p><p>I got a copy of the script and it was like, "Wow, that's a very crazy thing that happened."</p><p>When I first came on, it wasn't even necessarily gonna be the case that I would be in it more than three episodes. To slowly carve an arc in the final season — which is already difficult enough when you have so many other arcs that need to come to an end — to even begin to start fleshing something out is so difficult. I was so grateful that we could create something so that people would be surprised when I meet my untimely demise.</p><h2>Rapp-Olsson knows what Sebastian's TV death may mean to comic fans who were upset the comic version of the character killed Rick</h2><div type="image" title="Rick's comic death" height="968" width="1288" msid="94749654" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Are you aware of how satisfying this character death is for comic readers who have wanted revenge on Sebastian for years for killing Rick crimes? A lot of people were upset in 2019 when —</strong></p><p>Yeah.</p><p><strong>— the comic version of your character barged into Rick's room while he's sleeping, wakes him up, and basically guns him down, defenseless. I remember when you first got this role, you had told me you immediately reached out to a friend who was invested in the comics. So I wasn't sure if they had filled you in on Rick's comic role and if you thought that there was a chance that you might kill off someone else.</strong></p><p>Good memory. That person and I actually talked again fairly recently.</p><p>Once I got the part, I bought the entire compendium and read through it all just because so rarely do you get the opportunity to base your work off of source material, let alone something as cool and as big as a "Walking Dead" universe. Honestly, for most of my time on the show, I was sitting there theorizing the same way fans were, like, "Ooh, who would I kill? Would it be Aaron or would it be Ezekiel?" And thinking through why or how that would be an interesting thing.</p><p>To speak to the satisfaction point, I know what this character has meant to so many of the fans, especially the ones who read the comics and, even by now, ones who have watched the show. First and foremost, I will say everybody has been super nice. I have not received any kind of negative feedback. Everything has been very much like, "I love to hate you. I hope you take that in the right way." And I was like, "Fair. Then I've done my job well."</p><p>So, I know that there's satisfaction in that.</p><p>Obviously, this is a big divergence from the comic, but I think that's something "The Walking Dead" has stated from an early point. Sophia, in season two, dies where she stays on in the comics. Carol, obviously, dies early on, but even just down to the way that they do Glenn's death. They first give you Abraham['s death] and you think he's safe and then they actually do follow exactly how the comics do it. I think they've always shown they are not opposed to completely throwing a wrench in there and changing up expectations.</p><p>A lot of people who have read the comics are obviously like, "OK, who is he gonna kill?" It's not a matter of if [Sebastian's] gonna kill somebody, it's "Who's he gonna kill?" For him to die so prematurely and his death be more of a point in the broiling tensions of the Commonwealth is gonna be a complete 180 for a lot of the fans in terms of what they expected.</p><p><strong>I also thought that maybe you could have killed off Aaron or Ezekiel because Aaron looks like comic-book Rick at this point. </strong></p><p>[Laughter] He's got the hand for it, man.</p><p><strong>Exactly! But you never really interacted with Aaron.</strong></p><h2><strong>Rapp-Olsson had one chance to get his death scene right. He was forced to go home without underwear after being drenched in blood.</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Sebastian death" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749657" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>What was your reaction to learning how Sebastian died, getting a walker tossed onto him and getting bit? Were you happy with your character's death and what was it like getting bit in the neck? I'm sure you were wearing a prosthetic.</strong></p><p>[joking] No, that was my real neck. They got me back from the dead. It was a close call. SAG was not happy about this.</p><p>It was obviously wild reading it and taking a second and being like, "Whoa, that's crazy."</p><p>This journey, which has been unbelievable, like all journeys, sadly has to come to an end. The more I thought about it, I was like, that's gonna be a so much fun to shoot. If you get time on "The Walking Dead," I don't think there's much of a better way to go out than gruesomely being eviscerated by a zombie.</p><p>I was speaking with [executive producer] Greg [Nicotero] as we were wrapping 1117 and I had just read 1118 and I had the best time working with him. I thought he was just an amazing director. I said, "I hope I'm gonna see you before my time wraps up," and he gives me this very knowing smile. He said, "Kid, I'm gonna be the one that's pumping the blood through you."</p><p>He's on set with an upside-down fire extinguisher with a hose that's attached through this prosthetic system that goes into the neck. This neck takes like an hour and a half to put on. This is a no-joke thing, not to mention it's gonna take about an hour to take off. The part that I think a lot of people always kind of forget is you really get one shot at this. You could do it again, but that's gonna take the better part of a day.</p><p>Even on a show of this scale and magnitude, that's a lot to ask from everybody. So there is a lot of weight that comes behind set pieces like this and it's not something that you necessarily learn at acting school when the one shot is incumbent on you screaming for your bloody life.</p><p>When the moment arose, what I didn't totally understand until doing it is just how much of the work is done for you. You look down and you're just streaming with blood. I turn around and there is a very convincing zombie behind me making very convincing zombie noises who has to bite into a thing that is glued to my neck. You are feeling something here and there is kind of a sense of like, "Oh God, this is horrifying." As an actor who, prior to this, got to play Romeo and die, which is fun, but all you do is drink poison and flop over, <em>this</em> is pretty cool. You get to go out with all this blood.</p><p>One of the costumers, when I came to set that day, was like, "Oh, I hope you brought a spare set of underwear." And I was like, "Why?" He was like, "Really?" And it just obviously hadn't even occurred to me that I'm gonna be drenched in blood. I'm gonna be walking around like I just jumped out of a pool of blood. I lived with that regret as I went home commando. It was definitely a moment of learning for myself and if I ever have another bloody death, I will remember.</p><h2><strong>It was a comfort for Rapp-Olsson to work with Jeffrey Dean Morgan since they're both dyslexic.</strong></h2><p><strong>I was so happy to see that you got a scene with Negan, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. That was one of my favorite interactions on the premiere. I wish that there was more of you and Jeffrey. Did you have any extra scenes that didn't wind up making it onto the show?</strong></p><p>No, nothing was deleted or anything. But I can't agree with you more. That was one of my favorite scenes to shoot.</p><p>We just got back from hiatus and I had met JDM in passing, but never actually talked with him for that long. So this was just such a cool opportunity to work with him.</p><p>On a personal note, I am massively dyslexic and so is he, and so he's always been kind of an idol in terms of just like what a good working actor who dyslexia is a part of his personality looks like. It's not every day you get to work with a person that you've already looked up to long since coming on the show.</p><h2><strong>He swiped some clothes from the show and Commonwealth pins</strong></h2><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Teo Rapp-Olsson" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749660" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Teo, is there anything that you took as a souvenir from your time on the show or that you were given?</strong></p><p>I obviously stole some of the clothing because I loved some of Sebastian's fashion. </p><p>I got some of the Commonwealth Founder's Day flag pins, which I'm gonna try to put up somewhere in my place because I'm team Commonwealth all the way. I don't see what the protagonists are all complaining about. It's pretty good.</p><h2><strong>Rapp-Olsson will appear next on season two of Fox's 'Fantasy Island'</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1114 Sebastian" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749891" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>What are you going to take away from this experience and is there anything that you can share about what you're working on next? </strong></p><p>I'm jumping on the show "Fantasy Island," which is on Fox. It's coming back in January and I'll be in the fifth episode. It was super fun.</p><p>What I'm gonna take away from this —  This is the first time where I was gifted such an arc and such a a time on a show and especially one where there's already expectations of this character. There was a lot of learning to really trust myself and the work because before I could ever show this to any fan, I had to, just for myself go, "You know what? I think this is good."</p><p>Even if the fans somehow told me this was terrible, this is a god-awful rendition, I have to personally say, "No, I did think this was good work and I put my seal of approval on it." To turn around and get positive feedback on it was a very grounding and humbling experience. Best Buy's Black Friday deals are kicking off on Thanksgiving Day

If you were Kodak, the answer was to effectively shove him in a closet and hope the product never reached the mass market.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Steven Sasson went to work for Kodak in 1973, </span><a href="http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/12/kodaks-first-digital-moment/?_r=0#"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The New York Times reports</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. He was tasked with figuring out whether a "</span><a href="http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/12/kodaks-first-digital-moment/?_r=0#"><span style="font-weight: 400;">charged coupled device</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">" (C.C.D.) had any practical application. This led him, through a series of steps, not only to invent the first digital camera but also to invent a device to display it on.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sasson showed these devices to his bosses at Kodak in 1975. At the time, it took 50 milliseconds to capture the image but 23 seconds to record it to tape, according to the Times. Then Sasson would put the cassette into a player, which would take a further 30 seconds to put up a 100 by 100 pixel black and white image. The Times writes that the device was a strange mishmash of parts: a digital cassette recorder, a Super-8 movie camera, an analog-digital converter, and other components connected through handful of circuit boards. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">His bosses were unimpressed. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">"They were convinced that no one would ever want to look at their pictures on a television set," Sasson </span><a href="http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/12/kodaks-first-digital-moment/?_r=0#"><span style="font-weight: 400;">told The New York Times</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">  </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sasson tried to convince them that, while the image quality wasn't great at the moment, that would improve rapidly.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He was allowed to keep working on it, over skepticism from his bosses.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55d23819371d2254008c05e1-3408-2320/patent.png" alt="patent" data-mce-source="Google Patents" /><p class="source"><span>Google Patents</span></p><p class="caption">Patent drawing for the "Electronic still camera," filed in 1977.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 1989 Sasson and Robert Hills made the first DSLR camera, which wasn't a jury-rigged prototype, but one similar to the ones on the market today. It used memory cards and compressed the image. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kodak's marketing department, however, resisted it, according to the Times. Sasson was told they "could" sell the camera, but that they wouldn't, for fear it would cannibalize film sales. At the time, Kodak made money off of every step of the photography business. Why give that up?</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"When we built that camera, the argument was over," Sasson </span><a href="http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/12/kodaks-first-digital-moment/?_r=0#"><span style="font-weight: 400;">told The New York Times</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. "It was just a matter of time, and yet Kodak didn't really embrace any of it. That camera never saw the light of day."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kodak did make money off of the digital camera patent - billions in fact - until it ran out in 2007. But by the time the company embraced digital, it was too late. Like its predecessors, the Note 8 packs in the best of what Samsung has to offer: the biggest screen, the most power, and advanced features like split-screen multitasking and stylus input. And unlike last year's model, Samsung promises the Note 8 has gone through rigorous safety checks to ensure the battery won't overheat. (I didn't have any problems on that front over the last week, for what it's worth.)</p><p>The Note 8 comes at a heavy price though. It starts at $930, and can go for as much as $960 depending on your carrier.</p><p>You have to pay a premium if you want the best of the best these days.</p><h2>Hardware and design</h2><p>The Note 8 looks kind of like a stretched-out version of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-review-2017-4">Galaxy S8 from earlier this year</a>. It has a slightly larger 6.3-inch curved display, a new dual-lens camera system, and more RAM. Think of it as a souped-up version of the phone Samsung delivered a few months ago.</p><p>It also follows the budding trend of cramming as much screen on the front of the phone as possible, so you get more display on a device that has the almost the same physical footprint you're used to in older phones. Samsung calls this its Infinity Display, and it's quickly becoming the standard for high-end phones.</p><p>All that screen gives the Note 8 a stunning look. Samsung has always made the best smartphone displays, and this one is no exception. My only complaint is that the aspect ratio makes the screen feel a bit too "tall" to me, making it awkward to use one-handed or fit in my pocket. But videos also look incredible on this thing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59aea17679bbfd04418b7a47-2000/galaxy-note-8-1621-2.jpg" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 8 wireless charging" data-mce-source="Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider" /><p class="source"><span>Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The Note 8 has wireless charging.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Big screens also mean there's no room for a home button, which comes with its own set of challenges.</p><p>The Note 8 now has a digital home button that appears in a bar at the bottom of your screen. The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, and you also have the option to unlock the device with an iris scanner, facial recognition with the front-facing camera, or a passcode. The iris scanner works pretty well, but you have to be staring at your phone at the proper distance for it to work. It's fast, but not entirely reliable. Iris scanning doesn't always work if you're wearing glasses or holding the phone at an angle, for example. Facial recognition works fine, but as Samsung admits, it's not as secure as the iris or fingerprint scanner. In fact, someone was recently able to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-note-8-facial-recognition-tricked-with-a-photo-2017-9">trick it with a photograph</a>. Samsung shouldn't even allow a method this insecure as an option to unlock your phone.</p><p>Besides the size, the biggest thing that sets the Note 8 apart is the camera system. Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the Note 8 has two cameras on the back for enhanced photos. That means you can use a 2x optical zoom, which won't distort your photos as much as the digital zoom on single-lens cameras. It also lets you take portrait-style photos where the subject is in focus and the background is blurred. It's similar to the effect you see on high-end DSLR cameras and the iPhone 7 Plus.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59aea1c079bbfd2d0d8b663d-2000/galaxy-note-8-1637.jpg" alt="samsung galaxy note 8 dual lens cameras" data-mce-source="Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider" /><p class="source"><span>Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The dual-lens camera lets you take portrait photos and use 2x optical zoom. (The glass back also smudges like crazy.)</p></div><p></p></div></div>But unlike the iPhone 7 Plus, the Note 8 lets you adjust the blur effect before or after you take a shot with a handy slider tool at the bottom of the screen. In my tests, portrait shooting wasn't perfect though. I found that conditions have to be just right to get a perfect photo, since a lot of the work is done with software, not just the dual camera lenses. If your subject isn't the right distance from the camera and the background, the blur effect can bleed into the person you're taking a picture of. (I've had similar issues shooting portraits on the iPhone 7 Plus, for what it's worth.)</p><p>Other than that, the Note 8 has the same features found in the last few Samsung phones, including wireless charging, water resistance, and expandable memory. And if you pre-order the phone before the September 15 launch, Samsung will throw in a free wireless charging pad and 128GB memory card. That's a really good deal.</p><h2>Software </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59aea24379bbfd1e008b7eae-2000/galaxy-note-8-1630.jpg" alt="samsung galaxy note 8 split screen apps" data-mce-source="Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider" /><p class="source"><span>Sarah Jacobs/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">You can run two apps at once in split-screen mode.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>When it comes to the software side of the Galaxy Note 8, it's the same story we've seen for the last few generations of Samsung phones. The company has perfected design and performance, but still struggles to pack in innovative software that rivals what you find from Apple and Google. It's not terrible, and it's definitely not a deal breaker. It's just a step behind the rest.</p><p>The latest example is Bixby, Samsung's new digital assistant that launched earlier this summer. Bixby is so ingrained in the Note 8 that it even has a dedicated launch button on the left side of the phone. But <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-bixby-galaxy-s8-2017-7">as I've written before</a>, Bixby feels half baked compared to Google Assistant and Siri. There were many times it didn't understand what I said, and many of my queries just dumped me into a Google search instead of bringing me the answer I wanted. Even Siri is better than that.</p><p>Bixby should get better over time as more people use it and Samsung teaches it to do more. It runs a cleaner version of the operating system without all the apps from carriers that can clunk things up. Plus, you're likely to get software updates faster than you would if you bought the phone through your carrier.</p><p>Like I said, none of this is a deal breaker. The operating system runs just fine for the most part, and you can still use all the great Google apps and services, just like you can on any other Android phone. Samsung has a lineup of three excellent phones - the S8, S8+, and Note 8. And within a couple months, you can expect similar offerings from Apple, LG, and Google. If you can wait a few weeks to make your decision, then hold off. So, intrigued by the elaborate gadgets, I picked up a $2,400 Canon.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>It was attached to the display by a security device, of course, but I was able to play around with it.</p><p>I loved the clicking sound the camera made each time I snapped a photo. I loved how crisp each picture looked. I loved how I felt like a professional as I rotated the lens to zoom in and out. I loved everything about this camera …except the price.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>But not yet willing to give up this newfound dream of becoming an amateur photographer, I browsed the rest of the circular display, and eventually spotted a Nikon that cost just under $600. ("<em>Still out of reach</em>," I thought. "<em>But much closer</em>.")</p><p>As I picked it up, a cheery associate in a blue polo shirt approached me.</p><p>He explained and demonstrated every feature of the camera, and almost 40 minutes later I found myself at the register, handing over my debit card, practically draining my account. (I had about $800 in my checking account from my part-time hostessing gig.)</p><p>I spent the next two months photographing everyone and everything I could in my spare time. I impulse-bought a $600 camera and it changed my life

The thoughts expressed are those of the author.</li></ul><p><a href="http://www.jigsawprods.com/alex-gibney/">Alex Gibney</a>, the Oscar, Emmy, Peabody, and Grammy award-winning documentarian, has directed dozens of acclaimed films.</p><p>Among the many disparate topics he has tackled on-screen include torture and the "war on terror" ("Taxi to the Dark Side"), the cruel scapegoating of the Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman ("Catching Hell"), Scientology ("Going Clear"), corporate corruption ("Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room"), and last year's hugely popular HBO film about the disgraced Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes ("The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley").</p><p>Gibney's latest film, "Totally Under Control" (codirected with Suzanne Hillinger and Ophelia Harutyunyan), documents the slow-moving disaster of the Trump administration's early response to the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>From the early warnings that Trump dismissed, to the shockingly ineffective leadership at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to Jared Kushner's tragiccomic group of 20-somethings emailing business connections to secure personal protective equipment, "Totally Under Control" uses archival footage as well as new interviews with whistleblowers, medical experts, and doctors on the front lines of the pandemic to contextualize a great many of the reasons the US has had the worst COVID-19 response of any developed nation.</p><p>"<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut4QjbruS50">Totally Under Control</a>" is available on video-on-demand this week, and it premieres on Hulu on October 20. The Business Insider columnist <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/anthony-l-fisher">Anthony L. Fisher</a> spoke with Gibney via Zoom this week.</p><p>This interview has been edited for space, style, and clarity.</p><p><strong>This is the first widely released documentary that's been shot entirely during the <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> era. What was the process like?</strong></p><p>It was tough to figure out how to shoot during COVID, both in how to get images that look good and represented the moment and also how to do so in a way that was safe, both for the camera folks but also more importantly for the subjects.</p><p>The film had two approaches. One was the COVID cam — which was kind of invented by [cinematographer] <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1304251/">Ben Bloodwell</a>. It's sort of a tray with a handle, it's got a laptop, it's got a DSLR [camera] and a microphone. And we would send it to wherever the interview subject was and an assistant cameraperson would pick it up, put it on that person's porch, connect the internet, and then leave. They'd wait in a nearby car in case there was a problem.</p><p>Then the person would go outside and pick up the COVID cam. It was already on, so Ben could see the person, talk to them, and actually remotely operate the camera and get a nice-looking image.</p><p>The other option we had was the Airbnb option. Ben or another cinematographer would go to an Airbnb, kind of scrub it down, and then by themselves set up the lights, set up the sound, set up the chair, and put this big screen in front with shower curtains and everything — a virus barrier. The lens poked out, and on top of the lens was a kind of a teleprompter, and an image of whoever was conducting the interview would be projected. So the interview subjects would look directly into the barrel of the lens, and that had a kind of Zoom aesthetic, but nevertheless was better-lit and had a more cinematic quality.</p><div type="image" title="trump fl rally" height="804" width="1609" msid="78662071" hostid="261"></div><h2>Unspooling the disaster of Trump's early COVID response</h2><p><strong>One moment in "Totally Under Control" that leaped out at me was Trump saying on February 28, "</strong><a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/democratic-candidates-hit-trump-s-coronavirus-hoax-claim-n1145911"><strong>we have lost nobody to coronavirus</strong></a><strong>." It was at a huge rally and drew big cheers. It's chilling, given what we now know was happening at the time he said that. And it's amazing to realize that's not even eight months ago.</strong></p><p>And the very next day, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/s0229-COVID-19-first-death.html">we did lose somebody</a>.</p><p><strong>You've gone through all this archival footage and you've contextualized the tick-tock of what the administration knew and when. How does it hit you now, emotionally, after everything that's happened since?</strong></p><p>We intentionally focused on the early days because that was when a different kind of plan really could have made a difference. What's chilling to me now about those remarks, particularly in light of the interview <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/listen-trump-tells-woodward-february-covid-19-deadlier-than-flu-2020-9">Trump gave to Bob Woodward on February 7</a>, is that Trump knew very well that he was lying to us all. And worse than lying to us, he knew those very lies were permitting the virus to spread uncontrollably.</p><p>How deeply cynical and cruel is to intentionally slow-walk testing, and also lie about the threat of a disease that you know is mortally dangerous, which will permit the disease to spread more rapidly and put more people in danger. That's really the dark part of this story.</p><p><strong>And not too long after that, on March 6, Trump explicitly says on camera that he doesn't want the stranded cruise passengers on the Diamond Princess to be tested because that will make the number of US positive tests go up. We all watched this happen in real time, but Trump's cynicism is astounding.</strong></p><p>We use another quote later on in the film where Trump said, "Slow testing down, please." He's literally saying he doesn't want to test because he knows the more you test, the more the numbers rise, which looks bad for him. That's like an oncologist seeing a polyp and saying: "You know what, we'll just let that pass and hope that maybe disappears. I'm going to go on a vacation now and I'll see you back in a couple of months." How irresponsible that is, it's really jaw-dropping in its cynicism.</p><p><strong>One thing I think we're going to look back on is how quickly the pandemic begins right after the impeachment trial ends. And in this period of chaos and unaccountability in government, Trump fires a bunch of inspectors general.</strong></p><p>He had been doing that for some time. I mean, that's his M.O. It really is all about him. And that's why the tension in making this film was we needed to hold him to account, because he is the commander-in-chief. He's the president of the United States. But we were very cautious about not making the film too Trump-centric because there is, after all, a government to consider. And also the people whose job it was to push back against the president, in this case did not. And then juxtaposed to what Trump was doing, were these poignant stories of the public officials, public-health officials, who were trying desperately to make a difference and to keep people safe. And they're being consistently undermined by Trump himself.</p><p>So it was a real challenge, because that's the great and terrible skill that Trump has. He keeps us all so distracted by his outrageousness, which is intended to draw attention to him, so that we don't pay attention to things like the sacking of the inspectors general, to the way testing was slow-walked, all the policy issues and all the mechanisms of government that one after another he's filling with sand and glue.</p><div type="image" title="Jared Kushner" height="1455" width="2000" msid="78662074" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>'This administration works outside of the government'</strong></h2><p><strong>One argument I've been hearing a lot from Trump-sympathetic people is that "Of course, there's political appointees running the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration, that's how it goes." But it seems like this particular CDC leadership is much more beholden politically to the president than would seem normal.</strong></p><p>Let's not be too cynical. When you're a political appointee and you are appointed to be head of the CDC, for example, in a way you're serving two masters. You're serving the president because you've been appointed by the president, but you're also serving the institution and the ethics and goals of that institution. It's your job to serve both, which is how good governance works. In the Trump administration, there was only one job, which was to serve Trump and to say what he wanted to hear, to do what he wanted to do, and let the institution be damned.</p><p>What you see with Trump is the corrupting of institutions that it turns out are very valuable. People can talk all they want about the "deep state." Another way of talking about the deep state is to say that institutions have values. And the CDC was known as the gold standard in terms of epidemiology and understanding disease and the production of vaccines. All of that was hugely influential throughout the world, and that has been completely undone by Donald Trump. He's corrupted it.</p><p><strong>Max Kennedy, one of Jared Kushner's volunteers — </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-devotion-cronyism-getting-people-killed-coronavirus-pandemic-covid-2020-5"><strong>the 20-somethings he put in charge of securing the nation's PPE supply</strong></a><strong> — says in the film, "This administration works outside of the government." That feels in line with what you're saying. That particular Trump political appointees have hollowed out the government--</strong></p><p>They have.</p><p><strong>And that's how you end up with images of volunteers using Gmail accounts and private laptops in a dark room, begging companies for PPE.</strong></p><p>It's feckless. These were kids — in their early 20s. They so desperately wanted to help that they're volunteering their time to work 80 hours a week in the middle of a pandemic to try to help get valuable PPE — N95 masks, gowns, and gloves — to doctors and nurses.</p><p>They go in and discover that, actually, they are the plan and that there's no guidance for them except, "Do a Google search on who might have PPE in China." Worse, they're not even permitted to buy materials themselves or to affect the way the government might buy those materials. They're there just to cut deals, so that then a certain small group of selected companies can go in, get that stuff, and then profiteer off it.</p><p>Not only were [the companies] subsidized by the government, but they were permitted to sell these materials to whoever they wanted, sometimes even foreign countries, and make whatever profit they thought was meaningful to them. That meant the states, as we show in the film, were going on eBay desperately trying to keep up with the soaring prices of stuff that was desperately needed for nurses and doctors. The cynicism of that, the idea of bringing a business approach to government, is really shocking.</p><p><strong>Can you tell me a little more about who these volunteers were and how they were recruited?</strong></p><p>There was just a word sent out by some of Kushner's people, "Wouldn't it be great to have some volunteers," and there was an operation out of FEMA where Kushner said he was going to run his PPE task force. So it was a "through the grapevine" kind of thing.</p><p>Max Kennedy Jr. told us his former employer approached him and said, "I hear that they're looking for volunteers to work really long hours to try to help Jared Kushner's new team find PPE." It was very ad hoc. There was no routine to it. There was no experience needed. Just show up.</p><p>But the most shocking thing for the volunteers was that they expected they were going to be doing data entry, running for coffee, being support troops for a robust organization that was already running on six cylinders. But to their chagrin and horror, they discovered that they were, in fact, the task force.</p><p><strong>Did Max Kennedy violate his nondisclosure agreement by speaking with you?</strong></p><p>He did. But he did so with good legal advice. The NDA was probably not valid, and they weren't being given any classified information. The NDA was purely an afterthought to try to contain the damage that would come from exposing the truth of what was actually happening.</p><p>I was certainly shocked and surprised with Max Kennedy's testimony, but what was also surprising to me was stumbling on the "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/19/us/politics/trump-coronavirus-outbreak.html">Crimson Contagion</a>" story.</p><p>In October 2019, the Trump administration published its own report on how to handle a pandemic that arrived in this country from China. It had all the lessons learned about what they did right and wrong in that exercise, and how that would enable them to do better in the future. They had a very detailed playbook on how to handle this properly. And then when the pandemic came, they left that laminated playbook on the shelf. They never opened it. That was a shocker.</p><h2>The damage wrought by the well-meaning lies of the 'experts'</h2><p><strong>Early in the pandemic, when PPE was in desperately short supply, the CDC and the surgeon general both told the public, "Don't wear masks." They said they're not effective in preventing coronavirus. We now know they were lying, too, and it was a last-ditch effort to keep N95 masks available for first-responders and hospital workers and prevent bulk panic-buying.</strong></p><p><strong>But with the levels of trust in institutions already so low in this country, was the lie worth it?</strong></p><p>I'm not sure it was. That all could have been done a different way. There had to have been a way to give a kind of truthful reckoning and account to the American people, even while safeguarding that supply. But this also goes back to the beginning.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rick-bright-60-minutes-us-coronavirus-response-chaotic-2020-5">Rick Bright</a>, who was running BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority), which is focused and dedicated to pandemic response inside the government, said in early January that we've got to get it together and gear up on PPE right now. This is even before the first COVID test, just as a way of precaution, and nobody listened. It's like saying "What's the point of finishing the roof because it's sunny today?"</p><div type="image" title="trump covid tweet economy" height="1418" width="2837" msid="78662081" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>This film drops three weeks before the election, and it's covering events that are still very fresh. What do you want people to get out of this?</strong></p><p>Again, to emphasize, this film focuses on the early days. And the reason it focuses on the early days is because those were the days when all of this could have been prevented. I think it's very important that people understand that we don't have to be in the situation that we're in. And that's why we use the comparison with South Korea, because they never had to shut down their economy and country of 51 million people. They now have a total of less than 500 COVID deaths. Even if you multiply that by six, it's a tiny number compared to our titanic death toll.</p><p>The film is about competence. It's not a political film — it's not designed to be one party attacking another. It was designed to look at an administration, and how did this administration that prides itself on its business approach to governance handle this? That's the bottom line here: Did they do a good job or a bad job?</p><p>Unfortunately for this administration, the result looks more like a true-crime film than purely a film about competence, because the death toll was so high and the crimes of fraud and negligence are so extreme. I hope people will see that and render a judgment in early November on the complete incompetence of this administration in terms of dealing with public health, which affects all of us.</p><p><strong>I'm sure the film was totally wrapped up and sealed with a bow when Trump's positive COVID test became public two weeks ago. But what was your reaction to that <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword>? </strong></p><p>The film was finished, officially, the day before that announcement, and I was sleeping soundly as a result. But at 2 a.m. that Friday morning, I got a call from Tom Quinn, the head of [the film's distributor] <a href="https://watch.neonrated.com/">NEON</a>. He said Trump has tested positive for coronavirus. So I didn't sleep much more that morning. And the team huddled early in the day to reckon with what we were going to do. Were we going to open the film up? Were we going to delay its release?</p><p>Ultimately we decided the best way would be to both end the film, and then throw it forward.
