The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (<keyword id="6357743" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ngt" source="Orion">NGT</keyword>) has directed the Tamil Nadu <keyword id="60130" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pollution-control-board" source="Orion">Pollution Control Board</keyword> to take decisive action against the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) for operating a unit without obtaining prior environmental clearance mandatory. The bench directed the Pollution Control Board to take necessary action against GAIL for the violation, including assessing environmental compensation for the already conducted violations. The TNPCB has already issued a show cause notice to GAIL for operating a unit in the Meramathur village in Myladuthurai without its consent. The state pollution control board has also found that GAIL has not obtained clearance for laying a pipeline for 0.255 km in the Coastal Regulation Zone (<keyword id="6375544" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="crz" source="Orion">CRZ</keyword>) area. The NGT bench has also directed GAIL not to operate and lay the pipeline from Madanam in Sirkazhi to the <keyword id="14674628" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="memathur" source="Orion">Memathur</keyword> terminal without obtaining the necessary CRZ clearance as other mandatory permissions envisaged in the environmental law. The green bench directed the <keyword id="14674629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-coastal-management-authority" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu Coastal Management Authority</keyword> to act against GAIL for installing pipelines violating the CRZ notification, 2011 and 2019.
