The stock listed at ₹1,015, which is 27.5% more than the issue price band of ₹780-796 apiece. Shares of the company exceeded investors and analysts' expectations on listing gains as even a grey market had indicated a premium of just 20%. “The outlook for the industry is bullish and the performance of the company is ok with reasonable valuation however the sentiments have changed a little jittery for IPO listing for the last few days. Grey market is suggesting roughly around 10% of listing gain,” said Aayush Agrawal, senior analyst at Swastika Investmart. Post listing, the market capitalisation of the company stood at ₹12,109 crore, according to BSE data. The shares of Medplus Health Services were trading at ₹1,100, higher by 38% at 10.00 a.m., on December 23. The IPO, which was open between December 13 and December 15, received good response from investors. It was subscribed 52.50 times on the last day of the bidding. But the next wave of public healthcare companies looks to be on the horizon.At least two healthcare companies are considering public-market debuts in the not-so-distant future. The diabetes startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-omada-health-confidentially-filed-s1-ipo-public-2024-10">Omada Health confidentially filed its S-1 this summer</a>. And the physical-therapy startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hinge-health-s-1-morgan-stanley-ipo-2024-9">Hinge Health has hired banks including Barclays</a> as it prepares to file its S-1 confidentially.Hinge and Omada likely aren't the only healthcare companies <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/healthcare-startups-ipo-public-markets-reopens-2024-1">weighing an IPO as market conditions improve</a>.Jon Swope, a managing director in Barclays' healthtech division, told me he expects a pickup in healthcare IPOs in 2025 after a three-year drought.<div type="image" title="A headshot of Jon Swope." height="1200" width="846" msid="114356715" hostid="261" sizebytes="24914"></div>I spoke with him about what the next wave of healthcare IPOs could bring — and which healthcare startups are in the best position to test the public markets.The following has been edited for clarity and length.In the past few years there have been a number of take-privates and near-delistings in healthcare, as well as plenty of healthcare companies that have otherwise struggled in the public markets. What can we learn from those companies' challenges, and how might they impact the next round of healthcare IPOs?The whipsaw of the public markets over the last five years has created a challenging backdrop, even with the overall market improving.From 2019 through 2021, nearly 20 companies went public through IPOs or SPACs in healthtech. At its peak, the total market cap for healthtech and digital health was over $300 billion. Through both take-privates and declines in share prices, that's down to just about $90 billion.Large take-privates like Change Healthcare, Nuance, Cerner, Inovalon, and others are part of the story. The other part is that, on average, the companies that went public or were already public are down by about 80% — names like Teladoc, Accolade, and Health Catalyst.The enthusiasm that supported the last wave, with respect to the positive and innovative business models in healthtech and digital health, is not gone. It's just that these companies haven't been able to achieve growth with profitability. When there's a next set, there's going to be more of a focus on growth and profitability.You see that in the IPOs that happened this year: Waystar and Tempus. Waystar is large-scale, profitable, with growth, and Tempus has the promise of AI, high growth, and emerging profitability. Both have performed since their public debut.In the private sphere, many investors have leaned away from healthcare services and into healthcare AI. What models do you expect the healthcare market to favor in this next round of IPOs?There are three general categories that are investible in healthtech and digital healthcare. One is simply data and then technology and healthcare. Healthcare is arguably two decades behind every other industry in the adoption of technology. Whether it's software, tech-enabled models, or, importantly, the data opportunity and AI opportunity, tech and data infrastructure for healthcare is No. 1.No. 2 is consumer-centric models, such as some B2B2C models, the employer and payer digital-health models, or even direct-to-consumer models. Look at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-hims-founders-journey-to-go-public-via-spac-2021-1">the performance of Hims</a>, which has emerged from its post-SPAC purgatory.Consumer-centric healthcare is the future of healthcare, and it's becoming more of our collective reality. The companies with consumer-centric business models that deliver longitudinal engagement and outcomes, financial and clinical, for consumers and the payers of healthcare, both employers and insurance companies, are certainly on the list.No. 3 is value-based care. Much has been made of that as a category, tying together costs and outcomes. And while some of the brick-and-mortar value-based care companies have had their own challenges, support for the adoption of value-based care by providers will continue to be where healthcare is going.Are there models in healthcare that you think are perhaps not the best fit for the public markets right now?The less complex the elevator pitch, the better. While I can't say there's a model that's not a fit, what we heard from investors as things were bending in the wrong direction last boom cycle was: "Wait, what did I just buy? I'm not sure I fully understand this company's business model."Now you have to juxtapose that against the reality of healthcare, which is complex. So it's companies that can articulate a clear and simple story while also navigating the layers of the healthcare ecosystem in executing on their business model.That includes riding the existing rails. In the last five-plus years we've seen companies figuring out how to work with the payers and providers that make up the healthcare ecosystem to bring innovation and disruption to how we experience healthcare.Given the major slowdown in SPAC deals in the past few years and Nuvo's poor performance (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-22/newly-public-pregnancy-care-firm-nuvo-files-for-bankruptcy">and bankruptcy</a>) this year, could we see more SPAC deals for healthcare startups next year?It's a four-letter word for the foreseeable future. I imagine there will be SPACs created, and there are still others that haven't run out of time, but it's unlikely that we see companies using that vehicle that could go public the regular way.For startups that don't go public, will we see M&amp;A pick up in 2025? With large retailers like Walmart pulling away from healthcare, who are the potential buyers?M&amp;A is picking up already, as evidenced by volume this year, and it will continue to, particularly in an easing financing environment and macro backdrop where bid-ask spreads are narrowing.The consolidation activity is in three categories. First, there are the large-cap consolidators including retailers, payers, and Big Tech. There will be deals there, but there are only so many that will be done by that group, which is not much more than a dozen companies.The next is large-cap, and often private-equity-backed, healthtech consolidators. A number of them are private and will continue to be buyers.The third category is just smaller mergers of equals. Especially for enterprise sales, selling into payers or selling to providers, scale matters, and so size matters. We'll see small companies merge with other small companies to get there.Anything else startups should know that might impact this next cycle of IPOs?While these companies that went public in the last cycle may not have fulfilled their promises, they set the stage for an attractive IPO market by going public the right way — executing on the business and growing it, and increasing awareness around the company well in advance of an IPO.At the back end of the last boom wave there was a rush to go public, and SPACs were examples of that. I think that in the 2025, 2026, and 2027 IPO classes, there will be a number of companies that think about it the right way, not rushing to get to the public market.

<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> and Maldives have signed an agreement to introduce the <keyword id="19998949" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unified-Payments-Interface" source="keywords">Unified Payments Interface</keyword> in the archipelago nation, which will have a "very positive" impact on its <keyword id="20260982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tourism-sector" source="keywords">tourism sector</keyword>, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Friday during Jaishankar's three-day official visit to the Maldives. "Witnessed signing of MoU between (the) National Payments Corporation of India and (the) Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Maldives on (the) introduction of (a) digital payment system in the Maldives," he said in a post on X. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="19998946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI" source="keywords">NPCI</keyword>), Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is an instant real-time payment system to facilitate inter-bank transactions through mobile phones. Addressing a press conference with his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer after their "productive discussions", Jaishankar said that India, through its UPI, has "revolutionised digital transactions". Stressing that it has taken financial inclusion in India to new levels, he said "Today 40 per cent of the world's real-time digital payments take place in our country." "We see this revolution, every day in our lives. I am pleased to note that with the signing of the MoU today, we have taken the first step towards bringing this digital innovation to Maldives," he said. "I wish the very best to stakeholders on both sides and hope that we will soon see the first UPI transaction here. I should mention that it will have a very positive impact on tourism," he added. Tourism is the main source of economic activity for the Maldives, contributing nearly 30 per cent of the GDP and generating more than 60 per cent of foreign exchange. Jaishankar's visit aims to reset the bilateral relationship with the Maldives and is the first high-level trip from India after the archipelago nation's pro-China president, Mohamed Muizzu, assumed office last year. "India's partnership with the Maldives is based on our deep desire to work together for each other's welfare and interests. It is a partnership that has enabled us to always swiftly and effectively respond to challenges, as witnessed in the past," Jaishankar said. "It is a partnership that has enabled us to deliver results and bring tangible benefits to our people in accordance with their wishes, aspirations and priorities," he said. In a post on X, Jaishankar also said, "Jointly inaugurated six High Impact Projects in areas of street lighting, mental health, children speech therapy and special education." "Welcome renewal of MoU between National Centre for Good Governance and Civil Services Commission on (the) training of additional 1,000 civil services officers," he added. Addressing the joint press conference, Maldivian Foreign Minister Zameer said, "India has always been one of our closest friends and a vital development partner." He said the "enduring friendship" was built on a foundation of mutual trust and respect and has continued to flourish over the years. "High-level exchanges between our countries have deepened our dialogue and cooperation in areas of shared interest. We remain dedicated to strengthening and advancing this mutually beneficial partnership," he said. "Minister Dr Jaishankar and I agreed that much more needs to be done to promote trade and investment between the Maldives and India," he said, adding that both sides are committed to establishing "effective mechanisms to enhance economic cooperation, fostering a vibrant and prosperous partnership that will benefit both the nations." Zameer said he conveyed President Muizzu's proposal to begin negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement between the Maldives and India. "This agreement alongside other economic and trade-related agreements will facilitate trade liberalisation and ease the risks of doing business in both our countries," he said. Zameer said that India and Maldives have also mutually agreed to further strengthen their partnership by continuing joint exercises and expanding training opportunities for officers from both countries, asserting that this reflects "our commitment to working together to ensure the security of our nations as well as ensuring the safety and stability of the Indian Ocean region." India's relations with the Maldives suffered a major setback last year when President Muizzu demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel manning three aviation platforms in the Maldives. Subsequently, the Indian military personnel were replaced by civilians by May 10, the mutually agreed date. "On regional and multilateral issues of importance, our countries have a common understanding and are united in our efforts to resolve them. We agreed to continue our cooperation on issues ranging from combating terrorism, violent extremism, drugs, human trafficking and to the promotion and protection of human rights," Zameer said. In his press statement, Jaishankar said that India and the Maldives "are not just close neighbours, we are also natural partners." "Today, we are mutually invested in each other's development and progress. In a globalised and interconnected world, we see a lot of volatility and global tensions. Even as the world is recovering from the impact of the COVID pandemic, we have been confronted with new challenges arising from international conflicts," he said. In this tumultuous environment, India has been and will be, an anchor of stability for its friends, partners and neighbours. To the Maldives specifically, India has provided support to deal with economic challenges through financial assistance and budgetary support, and by ensuring an uninterrupted supply of critical items, he noted. India's actions have been and will continue to be guided by its firm commitment to the philosophy of 'Sabka Saath, Sabke Vikas - which is- Together, we prosper', Jaishankar said. Promoter Lone Furrow Investments will sell equity shares worth ₹450 crore through the IPO issue followed by ₹500 crore by PI Opportunities fund, which is an affiliate of PremjiInvest. PremjiInvest is the family office of billionaire Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro. The IPO consists of a fresh issue of ₹600 crore worth of shares and an offer for sale of shares worth ₹798.29 crore by selling shareholders. 18 shareholders will be selling shares in the IPO including PI Opportunities fund, which is an affiliate of PremjiInvest. PremjiInvest is the family office of billionaire Azim Premji, founder chairman of Wipro. The company is India's second-largest pharmacy retailer in terms of the number of stores and revenue. However, the freedom given to anonymous users to roam without oversight has left it to contend with a reputation of being social media's underbelly.While it grew through a sale to the media giant Condé Nast in 2006, before being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-ipo-advance-conde-nast-windfall-2024-3">spun out to its parent company, Advance Publications</a>, Reddit has struggled to find a path to profitability.Though it has taken its time, Reddit finally seems ready to prove its doubters wrong.On Wednesday <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/reddit-ipo-price-stock-offering-social-media-retail-2024-3">Reddit priced its shares at $34</a>, at the top of the range, implying a $6.4 billion valuation. The IPO is set to be one of the largest listings in recent memory in a test of investor appetite.There's a lot of uncertainty in the run-up to the day.Despite being created at a similar time to rivals such as Facebook and X, Reddit's platform has an average of 73.1 million daily active users, a far cry from the roughly 2 billion and 245 million daily users those two services have respectively.<h2>Lower losses</h2>Meanwhile, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-playing-waiting-game-to-avoid-losses-pre-ipo-startups-2023-11">IPO market more broadly has suffered a drought</a> in recent years as uncertain market conditions have threatened to chop down ambitious valuation targets. Investors must weigh Reddit's current health to determine whether its target valuation is valid.In its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1713445/000162828024006294/reddits-1q423.htm">IPO filing</a> last month, Reddit revealed that revenue had grown by about 21% last year, while its net loss at the end of 2023 was $90.8 million, down from $158.6 million the previous year.Those losses haven't dissuaded investors just yet, it seems. Reddit's IPO is between four and five times oversubscribed, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/reddits-ipo-much-five-times-oversubscribed-sources-say-2024-03-17/">Reuters reported Sunday</a> citing unnamed sources.<h2>AI promise</h2>Still, as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-reddit-loses-money-ipo-research-development-revenue-2024-2024-2">my colleague Peter Kafka has noted</a>, that's still a lot of money for Reddit to burn. In part, it's been spending heavily on engineering talent: about $439 million, or 55% of its revenue, went to research and development, which included engineer salaries.No doubt, part of the bet investors will be making is that the R&amp;D spend is focused on the technology of the moment: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-ipo-shares-loyal-users-ai-steve-huffman-sam-altman-2024-2">artificial intelligence</a>.In its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Reddit positioned itself as an indispensable component of the generative-AI boom. If the investor warnings are to be believed, struggling startups will face a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/failed-venture-capital-startups-burnt-27-billion-pitchbook-2023-12">bloodbath</a> this year as cash runs low and wary investors encourage founders to return the capital.Now, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2024-tech-trends-predictions-top-vcs">investors are predicting</a> an epidemic of founder mental illness in Silicon Valley and beyond, the likes of which tech has never seen."Sadly, but not terribly surprisingly, it feels as though we are in the early stages of an unprecedented founder mental health crisis," said Brad Svrluga, a cofounder and general partner at Primary, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/primary-vc-returns-new-york-startups-brad-svrluga-ben-sun-2022-8">invests in early-stage startups</a> based largely in New York City.The emotional burden entrepreneurs take on is well-known across startup land: the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-leaders-carole-robin-2023-10">loneliness and self-doubt</a>, the sleepless nights and the cold sweats. But being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-founders-surviving-vc-economy-funding-slowdown-2022-12">a founder in a tech downturn</a> is a more challenging game, says Svrluga, who began venture investing during the dot-com bubble in 2000. "It has made that lonely job even lonelier," he said.Founders are trying to save face for employees and investors while knotted up with the anxiety of a shortage of funding for startups. Companies like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/late-stage-startups-vc-lack-funding-forced-shut-down-2023-10">Convoy</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/robot-pizza-startup-zume-shutting-down-raised-500-million-softban-2023-6">Zume</a> have folded in the bust. Layoffs are rampant. And in an otherwise turbulent year, founders are also reeling from two years of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2024-outlook-us-economy-stock-market-jobs-inflation-interest-rates-2023-11">tough economic conditions</a>, four years of largely remote work, wars, and a presidential election cycle.Svrluga shared that he's had multiple conversations with founders who divulged to him that they'd had anxiety attacks."We are seeing founders — who under the best of times walk that delicate line between the possible and the impossible — experiencing unprecedented levels of stress," Svrluga said. "As capital markets likely fail to improve in 2024, I fear these pressures will only multiply." Jennifer Wolf, managing partner at Initialized Capital, echoed those fears. "Runways for many startups will run out, companies will wind down, and even with new opportunities that arise, founders will have many points of stress as they go through changes. It's easy to get overwhelmed, which can lead to negative behaviors like ignoring problems and pretending they will go away," she said.Which begs the question: Will more investors rise to the occasion in support of founders or look away?<h2>'It's like don't ask, don't tell'</h2>The experience of being a haggard founder is widely shared, and still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-founders-mental-health-stress-economy-funding-2022-7">many suffer in silence.</a> Founders worry that talking openly about their mental health could shred their credibility with their team or board. Investors might see their mental health struggles as a weakness and seek to replace them. So some founders hide behind a steely, hard-driving exterior. Many tell their secret only to other founders or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/confessions-of-a-startup-founder-wife-marriage-tiktok-games-2023-11">their spouses</a>.Josh Felser, an outspoken early-stage investor and activist, previously told Business Insider, "The majority of VCs don't want to hear about a founder's mental health. It's like don't ask, don't tell."The good news is that speaking about mental health and working through ways to address it isn't as taboo as it once was. And investors are offering ways to help.More investors have spun up programs to address founder mental health and burnout in recent years. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.felicis.com/founder-pledge">Felicis Ventures</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexis-ohanian-new-fund-seven-seven-six-hires-katelin-holloway-2020-10">Seven Seven Six</a> commit 1% on top of every new investment for founders to subsidize services like coaching and therapy. The Grand, a startup that provides <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-grand-pitch-deck-seed-round-group-coaching-nba-2023-10">group coaching as a service</a>, told Business Insider one of the fast-growing segments of the business is coaching for founders, now that venture firms such as First Round, Redpoint, Forerunner, and Freestyle offer it as a perk to entrepreneurs.For Primary, it's an opportunity to dog food one of its investments.
