Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (<keyword id="6357766" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="dmk">DMK</keyword>) President <keyword id="96364" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="MK-Stalin">MK Stalin</keyword> on Tuesday demanded scrapping of <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword> for medical college admissions as the Centre had allowed for separate entrance tests in its 11 such institutions in <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>.<br /><br />Similarly, in medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, admissions for postgraduate courses should not be made based on National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) scores, he said.<br /><br />Stalin urged Chief Minister K Palaniswami to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this subject so that admissions to postgraduate medical courses could be made and 69 per cent reservation quota implemented for the same.<br /><br />The Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly also urged Palanswami to hold counselling for admissions to special medical courses for government doctors with 50 per cent reservation.

<br /> Like every year, lakhs of Indian students are preparing for medical entrance examinations conducted separately by state governments and private colleges. However, they would be breathing a sigh of relief because the Supreme Court of India has ruled that multiple tests should be replaced with the National Eligibility Entrance Test (<keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>) from this very session (2016-17).<br />

The decision has come just a few days before the test season starts from May 1, when CBSE conducts the All India Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Entrance Test. This is to be followed by Maharashtra CET on May 5, after which private medical colleges of Karnataka will conduct a test on May 8. Apart from these, five more entrance tests are scheduled for the next month.<br />

The test in question, NEET, had been declared illegal and unconstitutional by SC in 2013, but was restored on April 11.<br />
 <br /> Even after the revival when the authorities failed to implement it, <keyword id="3341279" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="NGO-Sankalp-Charitable-Trust">NGO Sankalp Charitable Trust</keyword> approached the SC for enforcing the mechanism for a common test for admission in MBBS, BDS and PG courses in all colleges.<br />

"A student seeking admission in a medical college has to shell out lakhs of rupees in taking an examination and most of the tests are not conducted in a fair manner. There is no impediment in way of implementing NEET after the Constitution bench verdict and the Centre should be directed to enforce the order in association with MCI and CBSE," Advocate Amit Kumar, appearing for the petitioner NGO Sankalp Charitable Trust, told the bench. This prompted the bench to rule that NEET must be implemented from the coming academic session itself. <br />

College Admissions Officials Reveal The Terrible Things They Actually Want To Say To Applicants

The <keyword id="6356172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> is considering the option of reimbursing fees of students who would have benefited with <keyword id="6389157" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="maratha">Maratha</keyword> reservation in admissions to medical colleges, state minister Amit Deshmukh said on Monday.<br /><br />Deshmukh, who is the state medical education minister, said his department will move a proposal in this regard before the state cabinet.<br /><br />The Supreme Court in September this year stayed the implementation of <keyword id="1643654" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maratha-quota">Maratha quota</keyword> in jobs and education and referred the matter to a larger bench.<br /><br />The Maharashtra government later filed an application before a larger bench of the SC, seeking vacation of the stay on implementation of the quota.<br /><br />The state government is thinking of how students who have been affected by the Supreme Court's interim stay on implementation of Maratha quota can be given relief in admissions to medical education, Deshmukh told a TV channel.<br /><br />Asked if the government will reimburse their fees, he said, "...this (reimbursing fees) could be an option and the proposal will be moved before the cabinet by the medical education department."<br /><br />"Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ji will take a final call on the same after the cabinet discusses it," he said.<br /><br />Deshmukh also said the Maha Vikas Aghadi government -- comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress -- is committed to ensure that Maratha community students do not suffer.<br /><br />The Supreme Court in September stayed the implementation of 2018 Maharashtra law granting reservation to Marathas in education and jobs, but made it clear that the status of those who have availed of the benefits will not be disturbed.<br /><br />The Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018 was enacted to grant reservation to people of Maratha community in Maharashtra in jobs and admissions.<br /><br />The Bombay High Court, while upholding the law in June last year, held that 16 per cent reservation was not justifiable, and said quota should not exceed 12 per cent in employment and 13 per cent in admissions.<br /><br />
