Pardiwala stated, "Any act of viewing, distributing, or displaying child pornographic material by a person over the internet without any actual or physical possession or storage of such material in any device or in any form or manner would also amount to 'possession' in terms of Section 15 of POCSO Act." This interpretation effectively settled conflicting verdicts from various high courts, notably overturning a Madras High Court decision that had quashed a POCSO case against an individual who had viewed child pornography but had not circulated it. The Supreme Court, in agreeing with senior advocate H.S. Phoolka's arguments, deemed the earlier judgement "egregiously erroneous." <h2>Crimes categorised</h2>In a further clarification, the Supreme Court divided crimes related to child pornography under Section 15 of the POCSO Act into three distinct categories. However, the onus is on the device owner to act swiftly. Failure to delete or report the offensive material after becoming aware of it would constitute an offence under the law. To avoid the automatic downloading of problematic material, there are several proactive measures you can take. First, adjust your browser settings to disable automatic downloads and pop-ups, ensuring you have to approve any file before it is downloaded to your device. Domestic firms to lease 60-65 million sq ft office space by 2025: CBRE report

India was the fourth largest military spender globally in 2023 with an expenditure of USD 83.6 billion, behind the US, China and Russia, according to a report by an independent international think-tank. The report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shared on its website in April also said the "rise" in global military spending last year can be attributed "primarily to the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating geopolitical tensions in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East". The military expenditure went up in all five geographical regions, with major spending increases recorded in Europe, Asia and Oceania and the Middle East, it said. The report comes amid ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world such as the ones involving Israel-Hamas, Iran-Israel, Russian-Ukraine besides volatility in the Red Sea region. "World military expenditure increased for the ninth consecutive year in 2023, reaching a total of USD 2443 billion. The 6.8 per cent increase in 2023 was the steepest year-on-year rise since 2009 and pushed global spending to the highest level SIPRI has ever recorded," according to the report. The <keyword id="21404979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-military-burden" source="keywords">world military burden</keyword> -- defined as military spending as a percentage of global gross domestic product (GDP) -- increased to 2.3 per cent in 2023. Average military expenditure as a share of government expenditure rose by 0.4 percentage points to 6.9 per cent in 2023 and world military spending per person was the highest since 1990 at USD 306, it added. With military expenditure of USD 83.6 billion in 2023, India was the "fourth largest spender globally". Indian spending was up by 4.2 per cent from 2022 and by 44 per cent from 2014. The increase in India's military spending was "mainly a result of growing personnel and operations costs" which made up almost 80 per cent of the total military budget in 2023, the <keyword id="20911352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIPRI-report" source="keywords">SIPRI report</keyword> claimed. "This aligns with the government's priority to strengthen the operational readiness of the armed forces amid ongoing tensions with China and Pakistan. In comparison, capital outlays to fund military procurement remained relatively stable at around 22 per cent of the budget in 2023," it said. A total of 75 per cent of these outlays went towards equipments produced domestically, which was the highest level ever and up from 68 per cent in the previous year. The continued shift towards domestic procurement reflects India's goal of becoming self-reliant in arms development and production, the think-tank said in its repot fact sheet shared on its website. The Indian Army has maintained that deployment of its troops and other elements along the LAC is "extremely robust" and "balanced". The US military spending was USD 916 billion in 2023, which was 2.3 per cent more than in 2022 and 9.9 per cent more than in 2014, the report said. The US remained by far the largest spender in the world, allocating 3.1 times more to the military than the second largest spender China. "The biggest percentage increase among all US military spending categories in 2023 was for 'research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&amp;E)". The Stockholm-based think-tank also said in its report that Ukraine was the "eighth largest spender" in 2023 after a spending surge of 51 per cent to reach USD 64.8 billion. This gave Ukraine "a military burden of 37 per cent and represented 58 per cent of total government spending". "Ukraine's military spending in 2023 was 59 per cent the size of Russia's. However, Ukraine also received at least USD 35 billion in military aid during the year, including USD 25.4 billion from the US. Combined, this aid and Ukraine's own military spending were equivalent to about 91 per cent of Russian spending," the report claimed. According to the report, Russia's military spending increased by 24 per cent to an estimated USD 109 billion in 2023. "China, the world's second largest military spender, allocated an estimated USD 296 billion to the military in 2023, an increase of 6 per cent from 2022. This was the 29th consecutive year-on-year rise in China's military expenditure. China accounted for half of total military spending across the Asia and Oceania region. Several of China's neighbours have linked their own spending increases to China's rising military expenditure," the Stockholm-based think-tank claimed in its report. In 2023, the 31 <keyword id="20763732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NATO-members" source="keywords">NATO members</keyword> accounted for USD 1,341 billion, equal to 55 per cent of the world's military expenditure, the report said. India fourth largest military spender globally in 2023: SIPRI report

New Delhi, The <keyword id="19899402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital" source="keywords">digital</keyword> media will potentially overtake television as the leading segment in the <keyword id="20331450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="media-entertainment" source="keywords">media &amp; entertainment</keyword> sector in 2024 with an estimated size of Rs 75,100 crore, said a joint report from industry body FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and EY on Tuesday. While the Indian Media &amp; Entertainment (M&amp;E) sector grew by 8.1 per cent in 2023, reaching Rs 2.32 lakh crore and is expected to touch Rs 2.55 lakh crore and cross Rs 3 lakh crore mark by 2026, it added. "We expect the M&amp;E sector to grow 10.2 per cent to reach Rs 2.55 trillion by 2024, then grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 10 per cent to reach Rs 3.08 trillion by 2026," the report said. Though in 2023 television remained the largest segment with Rs 69,600 crore, however, it had a degrowth of 1.83 per cent as against Rs 70,900 crore in 2022, it said. While, the digital media in 2023 crossed Rs 65,400 crore and is expected to be around Rs 75,100 crore in 2024, which is ahead of Rs 71,800 crore figure of the television media. The report estimates digital media would be around Rs 95,500 crore in 2026, with a CAGR growth of 13.5 per cent between 2023-26. While TV media would be Rs 76,600 crore, which would be around 20 per cent less than digital media. "In 2024, digital media is poised for explosive growth, potentially overtaking television to become the leading segment of the M&amp;E sector. This surge in digital media is forecasted to propel the M&amp;E sector's growth to a 10 per cent annual rate, crossing Rs 3 trillion (USD 37.1 billion) by 2026," said <keyword id="20331445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kevin-vaz" source="keywords">Kevin Vaz</keyword> Chairman, <keyword id="20835181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ficci-media-and-entertainment-committee" source="keywords">FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee</keyword>. This growth is buoyed by a robust digital infrastructure, widespread adoption of OTT platforms, significant growth in the gaming segment, and the availability of cost-effective options for consumers. The report expects digital advertising to grow at a 13.5 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 84,200 crore, on the back of improved governance. According to the report, the connected TV (smart TV) saw a 50 per cent growth as internet penetration continues to rise. "The broadband market is growing with subscription numbers recording 904 million. It is inevitable that smartphone users have grown and consequently, the average usage time continues to rise," it said. However, it also added despite high app downloads of 26.4 billion, India was behind in monetising this potential, with users spending half their time on social media apps. "The year also saw the growth of digital ad spending by 15 per cent, predominantly in search and social media. By 2026, the digital segment is expected to grow to Rs 95,000 crore with an increased focus on governance," it said. The Media &amp; Entertainment sector (M&amp;E) sector, which was around Rs 2.14 lakh crore has grown around Rs 17,300 crore in 2023, led by growth from Digital media, <keyword id="20004573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="print" source="keywords">Print</keyword>, Online gaming, and Animation and VFX, the report said. "While the sector was 21 per cent above its pre-pandemic levels, television, print, and radio still lagged their 2019 levels," it said. The share of traditional media, which includes television, print, filmed entertainment, live events, OOH (Out-of-home), music, and radio stood at 57 per cent of M&amp;E sector revenues in 2023, down from 76 per cent in 2019, it added. In 2023, TV advertising fell 6.5 per cent due to a slowdown in spending by gaming and D2C brands, which impacted revenues for premium properties. On the print media, the report said it has buckled the global trend and continued to thrive in India. "Advertising revenues grew 4 per cent in 2023, with a notable growth in premium ad formats, as print remained a "go-to" medium for more affluent and nonmetro audiences. Subscription revenues grew 3 per cent on the back of rising cover prices. Digital revenues were insignificant for most print companies," it said.

Announcing the monetary policy decisions, Das had said that the decision to keep the repo rate steady comes amidst persistent concerns about inflation, which remains above the RBI's target range. RBI Governor Das said that the inflation will moderate from July onwards as the monsoon has improved and global food prices have shown signs of easing in July. The Q1 <keyword id="19999655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-Price-Index" source="keywords">Consumer Price Index</keyword> (CPI) inflation for the current financial year (2024-25) is projected at 4.5 per cent. India's retail inflation, after breaching 5 per cent in June, softened drastically in July. According to <keyword id="19895623" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="techcrunch" source="keywords">TechCrunch</keyword>, citing sources, the deal is expected to be finalised "within weeks" and involves a share-swap agreement. Founded in 2020, Koo is owned by Bengaluru-based <keyword id="20760807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bombinate-technologies" source="keywords">Bombinate Technologies</keyword>.
