However, it stressed that this is not enough for a 'mobile first' country. The Forum said that it is unfortunate that as many as 45,180 villages in India do not have any 4G coverage at all. "While this upgradation in minimum broadband speed is indeed a big milestone, India still has a long way to go to catch up with major regimes like the US where the regulator (FCC) has already prescribed a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps," said the BIF. Even Bangladesh has prescribed a higher minimum broadband speed of 5Mbps. Still, the move will help in lifting the overall quantum of per capita data consumption and improve the service experience. Being a 'mobile first' country, India heavily relies on mobile broadband with almost 98 per cent of the broadband users accessing it via their mobile phones. "2Mbps may not sound good enough for the modern broadband era as one would need much higher speeds for satisfactory experience in applications viz. telecommuting, file downloading, video conferencing, streaming video - both SD &amp; HD," said <keyword id="1146565" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tv-ramachandran" source="Orion">TV Ramachandran</keyword>, President, BIF. India raises broadband speed to 2Mbps but even Bangladesh offers 5Mbps

As <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="5G" source="Orion">5G</keyword> roll-out picks up speed, the median download speeds across <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> increased by a massive 115 per cent since the launch of 5G on October 1 last year, a report showed on Wednesday. The median download speed increased from 13.87 <keyword id="134176" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mbps" source="Orion">Mbps</keyword> in September to 29.85 Mbps in January 2023, according to <keyword id="2431974" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ookla" source="Orion">Ookla</keyword>, the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights. As a result, India's position on the Speedtest Global Index improved by 49 places from 118th in September 2022 to 69th in January. The data shows improvement in LTE speeds for both <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> and Airtel since the launch of 5G services, as all their investments into network modernisation are paying off. "When 5G was first launched in October 2022, there was a wide disparity in the early 5G network performance users were experiencing on 5G-capable devices," the report noted. The median 5G download speeds then oscillated between 512.57 Mbps (Gujarat) and 19.23 Mbps (Uttar Pradesh West) as the 5G networks build out started. In fact, in nine telecom circles: Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata, North East, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh West, the median 5G download speed was below 100 Mbps because networks were very much at the testing stage. "Four months on, in January 2023, 5G median download speeds had greatly increased across all of the telecom circles a" exceeding 200 Mbps everywhere except <keyword id="6357972" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jammu" source="Orion">Jammu</keyword> and Kashmir, with Kolkata clocking speeds over 500 Mbps," the report noted. Moreover, 5G investments made by the operators has also propelled an increase in 4G LTE speeds thanks to the modernization of the underlying infrastructure. For instance, median 5G download speed is 25 times that of 4G LTE (338.12 Mbps vs. 13.30 Mbps), and median 5G upload speed is 4.5 times 4G LTE (19.65 Mbps vs 3.55 Mbps). "This must be caveated by the fact that these are still early days for 5G in India, and 5G performance will most likely decrease once those networks are commercially available," said the report.

State-owned telecom operator BSNL has rolled out 4G service in select areas but its network speed did not figure in the Trai chart. Jio fastest in 4G download speed with 21.9 mbps, Vodafone Idea tops in upload, as per TRAI data for June

As the country prepares for the 5G era, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> dropped four spots in rank globally for overall median fixed broadband speeds -- from 72nd to 76th spot in the month of April, a new report showed on Wednesday. Overall median fixed download speeds in India saw a slight decrease from 48.15 <keyword id="134176" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mbps" source="Orion">Mbps</keyword> in March to 48.09 Mbps in April, according to Ookla, the <keyword id="23764" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="global" source="Orion">global</keyword> leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights. However, India recorded 14.19 Mbps median mobile download speeds which is better than 13.67 Mbps in March. With this, India is now two notches up in its global ranking and is at 118th position, according to the report. India falls four spots on fixed broadband speed globally; goes from 72nd to 76th rank in April

<keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword> recorded almost 600 Mbps median download speed on its <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> network in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> while India's overall 5G speed hit 500 Mbps as the country rolled out 5G services, a report showed on Tuesday. According to Ookla's 'Speedtest Intelligence' report, telecom operators have been testing their networks and they witnessed a wide range of 5G download speeds -- from low double-digit (16.27 Mbps) to 809.94 Mbps. "This data points to the fact that the operators are still recalibrating their networks. The speeds are expected to be more stable moving forward as these networks will enter the commercial stage," the report mentioned. Ookla compared median 5G download speeds across four cities where both <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> and <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> have built their networks. In Delhi, Airtel reached nearly 200 Mbps median download speed at 197.98 Mbps while Jio almost broke 600 Mbps (598.58 Mbps). In Kolkata, operators' median download speeds varied the most since June. Airtel's median download speed was 33.83 Mbps while Jio had faster median download speed at 482.02 Mbps. In Mumbai, Airtel's has reached 271.07 Mbps median download speed compared to Jio's 515.38 Mbps median download since June. In Varanasi, Jio and Airtel achieved closer parity, with Airtel achieving a 5G median download speed at 516.57 Mbps to Jio's 485.22 Mbps median download speed since June 2022. Bharti Airtel has launched their 5G services in eight cities and Jio's 5G beta trial "Jio True 5G for All" is now available with select users in four cities a" Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi. As per Ookla's recent consumer survey, 89 per cent of Indian smartphone users are ready to upgrade to 5G. "The new 5G results show that 5G speeds are far superior than India's existing network. While we need to approach these early results with caution, 5G devices are already showing they can achieve much faster speeds, at least under artificial controlled testing circumstances e.g., no network congestion and ideal network coverage," the report noted. According to the Speedtest Global Index, India ranked 117th in the world for mobile download speed at 13.52 Mbps in August. Reliance Jio records 600 Mbps 5G speed in Delhi

The UAE leads the chart for overall global median mobile speeds, whereas Papua New Guinea increased 24 spots in rank globally. For fixed broadband download speeds, Singapore is consistent at the top spot while Cyprus increased 20 spots in rank globally. As 5G rolls out, India jumps 10 spots in median mobile speeds globally: Ookla

The average download speed on the high-speed network from the country's three major mobile carriers -- SK Telecom, KT Corp and LG Uplus Corp -- stood at 690.47 megabits per second (Mbps) in the second half of the year, up 33.91 Mbps from the first half, according to data from the Ministry of Science and ICT. SK Telecom had the fastest average download speed at 795.57 Mbps, followed by KT at 667.48 Mbps and LG Uplus at 608.49 Mbps. The country's average 4G LTE download speed reached 153.1 Mbps, more than four times slower than the average <keyword id="4452994" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-speed">5G speed</keyword>, reports Yonhap news agency. The ministry publishes data on mobile network quality biannually to encourage network investment by mobile carriers. South Korea was the first country to commercialise 5G in April last year and has quickly built up a significant 5G user base of nearly 10 million as of end-October, around 14 percent of the country's total 70 million mobile subscriptions. The network, however, has faced quality issues, such as limited coverage and slower-than-expected speeds, prompting more than half a million 5G users to switch to 4G LTE through August this year, according to Rep. New Delhi, Jul 23 () Reliance Jio topped 4G speed chart with an average download speed of 16.5 megabits per second (mbps) in June, while Vodafone and Idea led in terms of upload speed, according to Trai data. Idea followed Jio in download speed chart with 8 mbps speed, the latest data published on Trai's Myspeed portal showed. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) recorded average download speed of 7.5 mbps and 7.2 mbps on 4G network of Vodafone and Bharti Airtel in June. For upload speed, Vodafone and Idea led the chart with speed of 6.2 mbps each. Jio and Airtel recorded average upload speed of 3.4 mbps each. Download speed helps in accessing messages, pictures, videos, etc., sent by others, while upload speed helps subscribers in sending messages, pictures, etc., to their contacts. Vodafone and Idea have merged their mobile business, but the companies continue to report their 4G speed details separately due to pending business integration. The data speed of telecom operators' networks showed increase in June after plummeting to their lows in March-April period. Amid tensions with the government, <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> has appointed a Resident Grievance Officer, days after it designated a chief compliance officer, as it also released its first India Transparency Report to meet the new IT rules. The US social media giant's website has listed Vinay Prakash as the new grievance officer, providing contact details and procedure for users to report potential violations of its rules and terms. Twitter had previously appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its interim grievance officer for India after the new IT rules came into force on May 26. However, Chatur stepped down within weeks of taking over the key role. California-based Jeremy Kessel was named as India's grievance redressal officer, on the platform's website - although the appointment did not meet the requirements of IT rules that clearly mandate key officers - grievance officer, chief compliance officer and nodal officer - to be resident in India. Twitter's website on Sunday showed Vinay Prakash as the Resident Grievance Officer (RGO). Users can contact him using an email ID listed on the page. "Twitter can be contacted in India at the following address: 4th Floor, The Estate, 121 Dickenson Road, Bangalore 560 042," the page further said. Prakash's name appears along with Kessel, who is the Global Legal Policy Director, and is based in the US. Twitter did not share additional details of the new resident grievance officer. Twitter has also published its maiden compliance report. In its India Transparency Report: User Grievances and Proactive Monitoring July 2021 report, Twitter said it had received 94 grievances and "actioned" 133 URLs between May 26 and June 25, 2021. Twitter said the majority of complaints received via Grievance Officer - India channel during the reporting period fell into categories including defamation (20), Abuse/Harassment (6), Sensitive Adult Content (4), Impersonation and privacy infringement (3 each), IP-related Infringement (1), and Misinformation/Synthetic and Manipulated Media (1). In addition to this, Twitter processed 56 grievances which were appealing Twitter account suspensions. In a separate category - '<keyword id="11616040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="proactive-monitoring-data">Proactive Monitoring Data</keyword>', Twitter said 18,385 accounts were suspended over the issue of Child Sexual Exploitation, Non-Consensual Nudity, and similar content, while 4,179 accounts were suspended for <keyword id="3208352" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Promotion-of-Terrorism">Promotion of Terrorism</keyword>. However, the 'Proactive Monitoring Data' -- content proactively identified by employing internal tools and industry hash sharing initiatives -- represents global actions taken, and not just actions related to content from India. Twitter noted that going forward, it will publish this report on a monthly basis and that it will make improvements over time, based on feedback received from the government, or in accordance with internal changes that allow it to provide more granular data. Under the new IT rules, large digital platforms (with over 50 lakh users) are required to publish periodic compliance reports every month, mentioning the details of complaints received and action taken thereon. The new IT rules are designed to prevent abuse and misuse of digital platforms, and offer users a robust forum for grievance redressal. Under these rules, social media companies will have to take down flagged content within 36 hours, and remove within 24 hours content that is flagged for nudity and pornography. Non-compliance with the IT rules would result in these platforms losing their intermediary status that provides them immunity from liabilities over any third-party data hosted by them. The rules also mandate appointment of three key personnel - grievance officer, chief compliance officer and nodal officer. These officials need to be resident in India. The Indian government had confronted Twitter over deliberate defiance and failure to comply with the IT rules, despite repeated reminders. Twitter -- which has an estimated 1.75 crore users in India -- lost its legal shield as an intermediary in India, becoming liable for users posting any unlawful content. Ashwini Vaishnaw, who has recently taken charge as Information Technology Minister, had on Thursday said all those who live and work in India will have to abide by the rules of the country. On the same day, Twitter had informed the Delhi High Court that it has appointed an interim chief compliance officer (CCO), who is a resident of India, and that it will make an endeavour to fill the regular position within eight weeks as per the IT rules. In an affidavit, Twitter had said "Twitter has posted publicly a job announcement for a CCO as a direct employee and is accepting applications at this time. Twitter will endeavour in good faith to make an offer of employment to a qualified candidate to fill this position within 8 weeks". Earlier, Twitter had advertised for filling the positions of Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Officer and Resident Grievance Officer in India on the careers section on its website. The Delhi High Court had granted two weeks' to <keyword id="308642" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-Inc">Twitter Inc</keyword> to file an affidavit, notarised in the US, on compliance with the IT rules and had made it clear that it was not extending any protection to the microblogging platform. The High Court had said the centre was free to take action against Twitter Inc in case of any breach of the IT rules. Twitter releases its first India Transparency Report under new IT rules

The new plan will not only help users who are stuck at home due to Coronavirus but may also help BSNL in getting new users and converting some landline users to broadband users. Also this new plan could be a direct challenge to market leader Reliance Jio’s latest request to set a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/jio-opposes-bsnl-mtnl-suggestion-for-floor-price-exemption/articleshow/74679920.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">base tariff</a> and cut down free offers and data. However, BSNL requested the government to exempt it from a floor price plan as it has less than 15% market share. As part of the Word@Home plan, BSNL is offering 10 Mbps download speeds with a daily cap of 5GB data to all its landline users across circles. Once the user exhausts the 5GB per day limit, the speed will come down from 10 Mbps to 1 Mbps. While the speed and data limits are not high, the plan is being given our free of charge. The offer is available only for its landline users. BSNL is not charging any installation fee or security deposit for the plan. However, users may have to pay for the landline as the calling benefit will be available as per their existing plan. At the moment, the free plan will be available for one month from the date of activation. BSNL is not the only one to offer a plan for the lockdown period. BSNL announces a free ‘Work@Home’ plan with 5GB high speed data

New Delhi, Mar 23 () Reliance Jio on Monday said it will offer free broadband service to new customers and doubled data limit for all existing customers to support work from home in fight against coronavirus. The company has also doubled data limits for top-up voucher and bundle-free calling minutes to non-Jio networks in these vouchers. "To ensure that everyone stays connected while at home, Jio will provide Basic JioFiber broadband connectivity (10 Mbps), wherever it is geographically feasible, without any service charges, for this (coronavirus) period," Reliance Industries Ltd said in a statement. JioFibre broadband customers are required to pay Rs 2,500 at the time of installation. Of which, Rs 1,500 is refundable at the time of surrendering the connection. "Jio will also provide home gateway routers with a minimum refundable deposit," the company said. The company has started offering double data across its 4G data add-on vouchers which will also bundle non-Jio voice calling minutes in these vouchers at no additional costs. "As its ongoing commitment, Jio is ensuring that its mobility services are up and running at all times with the deployment of essential teams on rotation round the clock across the country," the statement said. State-owned telecom companies BSNL and MTNL took lead last week to announce free broadband plans and additional data for their customers to support work from home. PRS HRS

Jio offers free broadband for new customers, double data for existing

No matter how much the telecom operators boast of their high speed mobile internet, a Delhi based startup might be the game changer in the data ambit. Speed Fetch, which has tied up with WiFi networks provider Ozone Networks, is providing free downloadable video content at speeds up to 60 Mbps. As per a news report by The Economic Times, this is quite high compared to what any 3G or 4G network can offer. 
 
Just as an instance, a 100 MB video needs 9 minutes to be downloaded in 3G network. And with Speed Fetch, it takes barely 30 seconds. 
The ET reports, while the company promises speeds up to 60 Mbps in ideal situations, executives said actual speeds can vary between 15 and 30 Mbps depending on the customer's location, signal strength at that location and the number of people using WiFi network at that time. 
"Speed and free content sSpeed Fetch apart," founder Dipank Sharma, who launched the app two months ago, has told the financial daily. "It works through micro-caching where content resides on a Speed Fetch box, in a WiFi hotspot location, which allows for faster downloads. Since the download is via WiFi, the content is free of charge," said Sharma, who has invested $2 million in the startup till date. 
 
Caching refers to storing web files for quick reuse later. "These speeds are real, but the challenge is the backhaul - fibre in the ground and backbone network - which requires a lot of capital investment (from WiFi provider)," said Prashant Singhal, global telecom practice head at consulting firm EY. 
 
Ozone's WiFi zones allow users to download the content provided by Speed Fetch for free for a day regardless of the usage. However, consumers will have to pick up hourly, daily or weekly data usage packs after the first 20 minutes, in case they want to use the internet. Sharma is in talks with investors to raise an undisclosed amount of funds by diluting 26% to 49% equity, confirms the ET report. 
 
The company plans to use the funds to expand operations to 20,000 locations with access to 50 million consumers. In the short term, it plans to expand operations to 5,000 locations across India by the year end and reach a customer base of two million.
