I began nesting and looked forward to the holiday season.Everything felt perfect, as if it was where it should be.I started feeling less movement from Mason a couple of days before we lost him. I was in between my weekly appointments, so I went to a private ultrasound clinic to be checked out. The tech found his heartbeat, my placenta, the umbilical cord, and said everything was where it should be. I left that appointment on Sunday relieved.On Thursday, I went to my routine 38-week checkup alone. There, the tech had trouble finding Mason's heartbeat. The staff took me to an ultrasound room, where doctors confirmed that we had lost him.I drove myself home and grabbed my hospital bag, which was already packed for my delivery, and removed Mason's baby clothes since I knew I wouldn't be coming home with him. Then I drove myself to the hospital to deliver my baby.It all happened so fast. I found out around 2:30 that afternoon that I'd lost him, and by 6 o'clock, I was checking in to the hospital.At the time, my husband and two older children all had mild cases of COVID-19. I was the only one who didn't get it. I remember thinking that we were so lucky that the baby and I didn't get sick. Because he was COVID-positive, my husband couldn't be there with me when I delivered Mason. It was just me and my amazing medical team.Afterward, there were so many questions that I never thought I'd have to deal with. Should we hold him? What do we do with the body? More than anything, what happened? We chose to hold him and say a proper goodbye. I held Mason, and he was perfect. He looked like my husband, just like my older son, too, when he was born. Same lips, same nose. He was 7 pounds, 4 ounces — a perfectly developed baby.We still don't know why we lost Mason. We sent him to an autopsy, and we're waiting and hoping that they will help us understand what happened. We're still waiting for answers.<h2>I don't feel complete</h2>I know we're lucky in that we have two beautiful children already when so many families struggle to conceive at all.When my older son was born, we brought him home and I felt complete. Then when our daughter was born, I really felt complete because we had a boy and a girl. But I've learned that my heart can give more. We prayed for a third child, for Mason, and now I don't feel complete. I feel as if I have a huge void, even though I have two amazing children. We try not to cry in front of the kids, but sometimes we can't control it. They don't really understand what's going on. <h2>You never think it's going to happen to you</h2>Experiencing a stillbirth is one of those things that you know happens, but you just never think it will happen to you. I know there are other families who have experienced this. I'm sharing this story because maybe I can help other women.I wish I could fast-forward and be one year from now with another baby and I could say to those ladies that it really does get better. I'm seeing stories now about other women who have gone through it and gone on to have another healthy baby. It makes me hopeful, and that's how I'm coping.I keep wondering whether I should have paid more attention or gone to the doctor earlier. But then I think: I did do that. I went in for an extra appointment, and the baby looked great. I want other mothers to know that it's not their fault; it's no one's fault. These things just happen sometimes.We're so grateful for the outpouring of love and support we've received in the past week. My house is full of flowers, food, and toys for the kids. Thank you to everyone who has let us know we're loved and not alone; it warms my heart, and I don't take it for granted.

"If you got a 1990 white fridge or that old yellow kind, get rid of it," Bonnet said.<h2>Be careful when you make changes to your floors</h2>When you're putting your home up for sale, it's important for it to look new and clean, particularly features like floors and walls, as both Bonnet and Vander told Insider.But you shouldn't rush to replace your floors if the home has good studs.For instance, Bonnet said someone would be an "idiot" if they had "really nice but old original hardwood floors, and they ripped them up and put laminate in."In that scenario, it would be better to <a href="https://www.insider.com/expert-shares-best-tips-for-cleaning-wood-floors-and-carpets-2022-4">refinish the floors</a> rather than replace them, as the hardwood would be attractive to buyers.But Vander said it's always worth the value of the home to replace carpet in your homes, as they're not appealing to buyers. "People don't like carpets," she said. Bonnet agreed, saying "nice hardwood floors are always a great idea. You never lose money on that.""The bigger the plank and longer is worth more," she added. "If you see tiny planks that are short and skinny, those are cheaper."<h2>It's better to get rid of things rather than add decorations</h2>When you imagine sprucing up your home, you may think of adding art you love or new photos of your family. But for potential buyers, pictures of your family or your statement sculptures might make it difficult for them to imagine themselves living in the home. Vander told Insider it's "very important" to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/easy-free-way-to-increase-home-value-real-estate-2019-5">declutter your home</a> before you start showing it to potential buyers."Don't collect things. Make it look presentable," she said. "People get offended when you tell them that because they have pictures and a bunch of stuff, and for them it's amazing and makes it look like home. I had my <a href="https://www.insider.com/after-suffering-a-stillbirth-i-donated-all-my-breast-milk-2021-11">second late-term miscarriage at 22 weeks</a> (technically a stillbirth, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since it was after 20 weeks).If I could have talked with Maya last week, here are the things I'd have told her — and anyone else going <a href="https://www.insider.com/birthed-my-son-same-room-stillborn-daughter-2021-10">through this</a>.<h2>Consider getting to know your child's body</h2>You are allowed to ignore those who say it's morbid to want to touch, hold, and examine your child's body. Some hospitals and birthing centers are trained to administer care with kindness after stillbirth. Mine did not. The nurses and midwives where I delivered warned me that seeing the body would be too upsetting.They were right; it was excruciating to hold my lifeless child.But I am so grateful I did. Against their advice, I unwrapped the tiny body, caressed the little toes, sobbed over the open mouth that would never utter a cry. I still remember the sandy tongue. I took pictures of the tiny fingers wrapped around my own, close-ups of details I needed to remember.You don't get to go home with a wiggling, grunting baby, but you do get to memorize the physical remains of what could have been.<h2>Your own body will remind you</h2>Every time you go to the bathroom and change your pad, every time you reach for something and don't have to grunt with effort because your baby is no longer in there, every time your breasts sting or ache with engorgement, you will remember your baby is dead.So will your brain. Anguish, anger, shame, despair, rage, terror. Yes, it is normal to feel every one of these in the span of half an hour.Blaming yourself is normal.You'll wonder if it's your fault. Or your partner's. Your doctor's, nurse's, boss' — literally anyone's. Trying to find fault will soothe you for a minute, but there's no sense in this loss. It doesn't matter how or why medically your child has died, no one is to blame. But it's normal to try.<h2>Get comfortable with grief</h2>You will have pockets of sunshine because the people you love will go on being wonderful, but expect the clouds to come back. Don't try to make every day a sunny one — take them as they come.Nothing else in the world matters right now. The definitions of words have changed. Food may lose its taste. You may forget to breathe. Don't be tempted to rush, to push through, to move on. Even though you might have to "make arrangements," get back to work, or take care of your living children, don't try to outrun the urge to curl into a ball and sob. Eventually, it will catch up. Go ahead and cry now.I thought my sadness would never end. It only began to lighten once I decided to stop pushing grief away. The moment I embraced loss as a new part of who I am, I started to breathe a little easier. That said, expect it to never go away completely. Expect to cry unexpectedly — though the sobbing bouts may lessen in frequency — for the rest of your life.<h2>Your partner lost a child, too</h2>Your partner's pain will be different from yours, but expect it to be just as devastating. Their relationship wasn't a physical one. They won't have to think of the stillbirth every time they go to the bathroom. But that might be just as hard to deal with since their connection was more ephemeral.Everyone will be concerned about you, and that is as it should be, but know your partner lost a child, too, even if they didn't carry it in their body.<h2>You're allowed to talk about it</h2>People around you, close or not, will want you to "move on'' because it hurts them to see you hurting. They might squirm or seem awkward when you talk about your loss. Their discomfort is not your fault, and it is nothing you can control. If you find yourself uncomfortable talking to people, I recommend getting a therapist if you have the means.Thinking out loud was one of the most important steps to my becoming functional again. On top of my personal counseling, my partner and I also went to couple's therapy.It's also fine to speak publicly about your loss. Commemoration is important. Some people, as I did, get a tattoo to honor their lost child. It's OK to say "my living children" or something similar when describing your family.It's beautiful to speak the name of your lost child.
