Indeed, a 2023 <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=8e26d9ff6e66f84cefbfeefdbced737cfc1cea9d00c54bc32fab88e9e3d96541&amp;postID=670eb5b8434c477c232fed0c&amp;postSlug=nasa-declares-sun-maximum-what-solar-storms-mean-technology-auroras-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-023-30424-2">study</a> found that flights were 21% more likely to be delayed by at least 30 minutes during solar storms.Solar storms can also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-cycle-active-grounded-flights-downed-satellites-2024-8">push satellites out of orbit</a>.In very severe cases, solar storms can affect power grids. In 1989, a geomagnetic storm wiped out Quebec's electricity and caused other power-system issues in the US, UK, and Sweden.Nothing that major has happened in a while. But this solar maximum has been one for the books. In May, an <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-northern-lights-dazzle-night-sky-across-the-us-europe-2024-5">extreme geomagnetic storm </a>brought the northern lights as far south as Arkansas.<div type="image" title="northern lights night sky with pink and purple glow above silhouette of treetops" height="1500" width="2000" msid="114291826" hostid="261" sizebytes="115744"></div>It was "the strongest solar storm to reach Earth in two decades and possibly one of the strongest displays of auroras on record in the past 500 years," said Elsayed Talaat, the director of the Office of Space Weather Observations at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.Unlike two decades ago, NOAA can better <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">forecast geomagnetic storms</a> and industries can prepare for them before they strike. Still, the May solar storm disrupted high-precision GPS that some US farmers rely on, causing about $500 million in losses, according to Bill Murtagh, a program coordinator at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center."The bigger the storm, the more visible the aurora, the further south it's visible. At the same time, we can't be hoping for these big displays because with them comes the threat to our critical infrastructure," Murtagh said during Tuesday's announcement. "We always have to be careful with what we wish for. "<h2 id="7ab5ba6b-e0c1-46b9-a08a-6f2bc8739d3b">Why the sun is at maximum</h2>The sun has an 11-year cycle, where it builds from a quiet, placid minimum to a roaring maximum, then dies back down.The current <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-solar-maximum-2025-what-expect-cycle-2023-4">solar maximum</a> likely began in early 2023, as the sun began to display more and more sunspots, which are low-temperature regions on the sun's surface created by concentrated magnetic field lines.<div type="image" title="side by side images of the sun bright yellow smooth sphere. the left image labeled solar minimum is completely smooth. the right image labeled solar maximum has dark spots speckled across the sun's center." height="1080" width="1920" msid="114291824" hostid="261" sizebytes="33546"></div>"There's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">more sunspots emerging</a>, the magnetic field has more chances to interact and increase the probability of having a significant geomagnetic storm," Lisa Upton, the co-chair of the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, which is an international panel of experts who have been keeping tabs on the sun, said during the announcement on Tuesday.NASA scientists couldn't confirm that the sun had reached maximum until they'd seen the number of sunspots start to plateau."It's by looking at the shape of that cycle, how it's progressed so far, and how we know that solar cycle progresses from our observations of the last 25 solar cycles, that we can really say that we're at the maximum phase now," Upton said.Eventually, scientists will be able to pinpoint an exact peak of the entire solar cycle, but not until many months after the maximum phase ends.

The sun is at its 11-year maximum. That means another year of eruptions that can endanger satellites, ground flights, and spark stunning auroras.

Strong investment demand, peaking headline inflation, and a greater emphasis on technology and skills by employers are also key factors. In terms of cities, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad emerged as the top cities with the highest proportion of employers expanding their workforce sizes. These cities attract businesses due to their established infrastructure, large talent pools, and economic vitality. The consistent preference for these major cities underscores their significance as job concentration hubs, despite the growing trend of expansion into new locations. These urban centres play a strategic role in driving employment growth and economic development in India. The report also noted that nearly two out of five organizations are focusing on bridging skill gaps, highlighting a shift towards a more adaptable and skilled workforce in preparation for technological advancements and new skills. The report said that Generative AI (<keyword id="19949719" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenAI" source="keywords">GenAI</keyword>) is particularly noteworthy, as it has the potential to transform key business processes, impacting workforce dynamics and reshaping talent management. In response, 35% of surveyed organizations reported significant changes in their talent acquisition strategies to integrate advanced AI technologies. On the unemployment front, the report stated out that a significant portion of the unemployed workforce, nearly 83%, consists of youth aged 15-29. Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the educational attainment of these unemployed youths. The proportion of those with at least secondary education rose from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022, indicating a rising educational profile among the unemployed. However, the national <keyword id="20054242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployment-rate" source="keywords">unemployment rate</keyword> has progressively decreased, falling to 3.1% in 2023 from 3.6% in 2022 and 4.2%in 2021. The unemployment rate in urban areas also decreased from 7.2% to 6.5% for persons aged 15 years and above between October-December 2022 and October-December 2023. The <keyword id="19913761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy" source="keywords">gig economy</keyword> in India is experiencing rapid growth, with the number of gig workers projected to rise from 7.7 million in 2020 to 23.5 million by 2029-30, demonstrating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 12%. The distribution of gig work across skill levels includes 47% in medium-skilled jobs, 22% in high-skilled jobs, and 31% in low-skilled jobs, highlighting the diverse opportunities within this sector. Aizawl, The <keyword id="65591" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mizoram">Mizoram</keyword> government has decided to allow reopening of schools for <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> of class 10 and 12 from January 22 and places of worship from February. According to the <keyword id="10036463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-unlock-guidelines">new unlock guidelines</keyword> issued on Saturday schools and hostels will reopen from January 22 for students of class 10 and 12. The guidelines said churches will be allowed to open with 50% sitting capacity or 200 <keyword id="2278432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="attendees">attendees</keyword> on every Saturday and Sunday noon time from first February. Churches in Christian majority Mizoram are closed since March 22 last year due to COVID-19 pandemic. The new guidelines also said any student intending to join his or her hostel must produce a COVID-19 negative certificate obtained within 96 hours before entry into the hostel. Higher institutions for undergraduate and postgraduate students will be allowed to open from February and training or coaching institutes will also open with either 50 per cent sitting capacity or not more than 50 students from now onwards, the order said. The <keyword id="2378610" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="maximum-number">maximum number</keyword> of attendees in funeral and marriage reception has been raised from 35 to 100. The number of attendees in indoor games, cinema hall, auditorium, community hall and social events (indoor) is fixed at 50. However, games and sports practices and social events held outdoors will be allowed with 100 attendees. In any function related to organisation or party, the number of attendees allowed is 100 but deputy commissioners can allow up to 150 attendees by special permission. All business shops, establishments and commercial activities will function normally under strict COVID-19 protocols. Any individual, who is returning from other parts of the country, will have to be placed under <keyword id="58679" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quarantine">quarantine</keyword> at designated facility but those who produce <keyword id="9043621" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RT-PCR">RT-PCR</keyword> or TreuNat labs negative test certificate, which is not older than four days, will be exempted from the quarantine protocol. Any state resident, who goes outside and return to the state within four days, need not go for quarantine. However, any person returning from Europe will be placed under quarantine at designated facilities and they will not be allowed for home quarantine facility. Night curfew will remain in force in Aizawl and other district headquarters from 8.30 pm to 4.30 am every day till further orders, it added. On an individual level, people on Earth are unlikely to directly see the effects of solar maximum.<h2>This solar maximum will likely be stronger than the last one</h2><div type="image" title="Solar coronal hole is shown on this gif of a rotating Earth." height="480" width="480" msid="99768382" hostid="261"></div>Solar cycles typically last <a href="https://oxfordre.com/physics/display/10.1093/acrefore/9780190871994.001.0001/acrefore-9780190871994-e-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">11 years</a>, and the solar maximum happens roughly in the middle of each cycle.The last solar maximum occurred between 2012-2014 and was particularly weak — one of the smallest in <a href="https://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/predict.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">about 100 years</a>. Consequently, space weather was generally weaker than normal.This upcoming solar maximum, however, seems like it may return to average values. That means we may see more of an impact on space weather and related potential consequences.<h2>What the solar maximum means for Earth</h2><div type="image" title="A rendering shows how magnetic lines on the sun can evolve over time. Our star is currently in the phase of the cycle where its activity is revving up towards a solar maximum.Scientists keep a close eye on our star because as it gets more active, it's more likely to send charged particles to Earth that can mess with our infrastructure.While our Earth's magnetic field protects us from most space weather, charged particle breaking through that barrier can cause minor disruptions like radio blackouts.These mostly go unnoticed, but can temporarily ground flights as the Federal Aviation Administration won't allow planes to fly without both radio and satellite communications. Experts are most concerned that this peak of activity could bring a solar storm so powerful it could knock our crucial infrastructure like power grids.This solar cycle has already provided some spectacular space weather. This year, a powerful solar flare caused <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-flare-from-sunspot-caused-widespread-radio-blackouts-earth-2023-5" rel="">widespread radio blackouts</a> in North America, Central America, and South America, and an unexpected solar storm caused auroras so bright they were spotted<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-aurora-northern-lights-rare-appearance-south-solar-storm-2023-3" rel=""> as far south as Arizona</a>.<div type="image" title="aurora seen above Riverton," height="2730" width="3641" msid="101491437" hostid="261" sizebytes="185590"></div><h2>A false sense of security</h2>Experts had forecast that this solar maximum would be fairly mild, peaking at 115 sunspots per month.Solar physicist Keith Strong shared <a href="https://twitter.com/drkstrong/status/1675174663679295488?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on Twitter</a> a forecast from the Royal Observatory of Belgium suggesting the sun could peak at just under 200 monthly sunspots. With each decade, we become more dependent on electrical infrastructure, according to Mathew Owens, a professor of space physics and the University of Reading. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2013-solar-max-is-weakest-in-100-years-2013-7?r=US=T">latest solar cycle</a> was particularly quiet and may have lulled us into a false sense of security, he added."It was the smallest we'd had for about a hundred years," Owens said, adding, "The danger of going from a small cycle to a slightly bigger one is that you then realize where all the vulnerabilities are."Still, if the sun peaks at 200 sunspots, it will be far from the biggest solar maximum on record. But to achieve it, the Fed is entering uncharted territory.<h2>How much unemployment can you have with low inflation?</h2>The previous threshold for low employment rested on a concept known as the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU), which represents a level of unemployment at which inflation doesn't spiral out of control. Though the true rate is unknown, the Congressional Budget Office estimated it stood at roughly 4.5% in 2020.NAIRU served as a loose guide for the Fed as the US recovered from the Great Recession, but it didn't quite work. The labor market's recovery from the financial crisis was, and remains, the longest of any recovery since World War II.Since the start of the coronavirus recession, Fed officials made it clear they weren't going to use the same strategy. The Fed's new framework seeks inflation that averages 2% over time. That opens the door to periods of stronger inflation.Prematurely retracting monetary support can leave underserved communities hurting and set the US back for years, Fed Chair <keyword id="1727754" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jerome-Powell">Jerome Powell</keyword> said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-powell-march-fomc-asset-purchases-central-bank-monetary-policy-2021-3">following the FOMC's March meeting</a>. By allowing for a brief period of elevated inflation, the central bank believes it can power a faster and more equitable labor market recovery."There was a time when there was a tight connection between unemployment and inflation. That time is long gone," Powell said. "We had low unemployment in 2018 and 2019 and the beginning of '20 without having troubling inflation at all."<h2>The maximum-employment experiment is uncharted territory</h2>Despite Powell's repeated messaging that stronger inflation will prove largely "transitory," some economists slammed him for risking a dangerous inflationary spiral. Letting inflation run above 2%, they say, can spark a cycle of soaring prices that would cripple the still-recovering economy.Keeping rates near zero into 2023 "seems to me at the edge of absurd," Larry Summers, a former Treasury Secretary who has criticized the fiscal and monetary response to the pandemic, said at a May event hosted by <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/consensus-summers-inflation-fiscal-monetary-policy-fed-punch-bowl-staggering">CoinDesk</a>."We used to have a Fed that reassured people that it would prevent inflation," Summers said. "Now we have a Fed that reassures people that it won't worry about inflation until it's staggeringly self-evident."Higher inflation also tends to give way to higher wages, but rising pay might not benefit the economy as some hope. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-stimulus-checks-savings-pay-debts-federal-reserve-cares-act-2020-10">Fed analysis of how stimulus checks were spent</a> suggests most additional income would mostly go toward paying debts and boosting savings, with only a fraction going toward spending.Even the target for maximum employment isn't entirely clear, as an unusually large number of Americans likely stopped working for good during the pandemic. A "significant" number of retirees skews estimates of the labor force's size, Powell said in a Wednesday press conference. This effect "should wear off in a few years" as retirees are replaced with new workers, he added. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Census Bureau data shows that US immigration is bouncing back from its decline over the last few years.</li><li>That's good news for the labor shortage, which has been exacerbated by the lack of immigrant workers.</li></ul>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-market-quits-labor-force-participation-many-workers-wont-return-2022-11">US labor force</a> has been struggling to recover from pandemic turmoil, but there may be a bright spot: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/international-migration-to-the-us-increases-for-first-time-since-2016-2022-12">a recent increase in immigration</a>.A <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/12/net-international-migration-returns-to-pre-pandemic-levels.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> last month by Anthony Knapp and Tiangeng Lu of the Census Bureau highlights just how much net international migration has bounced back from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-covid-immigration-makes-inflation-worse-recession-outlook-jobs-supply-2022-10">massive slowdown</a> it has seen over the past few years, one that experts say has reduced the number of workers the US could rely on. It's been one of the major factors in the country's ongoing labor shortage. David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-for-labor-shortage-demographic-immigration-problem-jpmorgan-david-kelly-2022-4">told</a> Insider that "if we increased the number of people who were allowed to immigrate into the United States based on the skills they bring to the marketplace, we could fix this huge excess demand for labor problem pretty quickly." But Knapp and Lu's post shows that after a decade-low net international migration figure in 2021 — with only about 376,000 more people moving into the country from abroad than moving out between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 — that number soared in 2022 to about a million.While net international migration in 2022 wasn't as high as in 2016 — the high point for immigration between 2010 to 2022 — it's still the highest since 2017.Additionally, the authors note that 2022 is the "first time net international migration increased since 2016."Cory Stahle, an economist at Indeed, told Insider that he's optimistic about the data. "Seeing the numbers from the Census Bureau are really, really encouraging," he said. "We are in a pretty tight labor market right now, and immigration can play a really important role in filling a lot of those positions and providing additional labor to employers." He warned that one data point doesn't indicate a trend on its own, but since the drop in immigration was in part due to pandemic-specific factors, it gives him confidence that the US is in an immigration upswing.Additionally, policies enacted by former President Donald Trump also restricted immigrants from entering the country, which also kept them out of the US workforce. The US would have had about two million more immigrants if not for those policies, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/immigration-could-solve-labor-shortage-3-million-missing-workers-trump-2021-11">Insider estimated</a> based on the average growth rate from 2011 to 2016 for net international migration. And immigrant workers typically fuel the industries experiencing shortages, such as transportation and construction. "We have a case where jobs continued to be added during the pandemic, but immigration was going down," Stahle said."This one point is an encouraging sign of turning back, but we still have far fewer foreign-born workers than would have been here had the pandemic not happened," he added.<h2>Immigration is rebounding, but federal laws are still holding numbers back </h2>Giovanni Peri, professor of economics at the University of California, Davis, told Insider that the increase since 2016 in net international migration to the US actually isn't too surprising given what it's coming back from.Peri noted that it shows a rebound "because immigration had decreased so drastically in 2020 and in 2021 as a consequence of all the restrictions that had been with Covid," where many visas and permits weren't being processed. "So there was a little bit of a backlog of immigrants who wanted to come into the United States and were essentially blocked because of all the Covid restrictions," Peri said. "So in part it's expected — this rebound."He's less optimistic than Stahle for what that means going forward. "I would say that it makes up for some of the immigration that we lost during COVID, but I would say also it makes me think that this slow trend of decrease in immigration is probably going to continue because it's linked to more long-term and structural types of issues," Peri said. According to Peri, "the number of immigrants who can come in legally is constrained" by laws and procedures that haven't really changed. The last major change was decades ago in <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2019/02/11/can-immigration-reform-happen-a-look-back/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1986</a>."This is not likely to change unless there is some change in legislation," he said. "And so in that respect, probably this slow decline or stagnation of immigrants will continue."And that means the essence of the labor shortage persists. Since entering office, President Joe Biden has <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/01/11/key-facts-about-u-s-immigration-policies-and-bidens-proposed-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reversed</a> a number of Trump's restrictive immigration policies, although a number of them are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/26/us/politics/democrats-biden-border-immigration.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">still in place</a>. This month, for instance, the Biden administration announced that it would <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/26/us/politics/democrats-biden-border-immigration.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expand</a> one of Trump's policies, which expels migrants from certain countries attempting to seek asylum at the Mexican border. "There is a very big gap between the job and the people who are searching for a job," Peri said. "I would say that we will need this type of immigration to stay at 1 million plus people net per year for the next four or five years to fill the gap. And my prediction is that that's not very likely to happen," Peri added. He did say, however, that in the short-term, this is some "good news" for the labor market.Nikolai Roussanov, a finance professor at the University of Pennsylvania, told Insider that above all, these numbers reflect a "pent-up need" among people who couldn't enter the country during the pandemic immigrating now, as the restrictions have been lifted. "They also reflect the dire need for workers, but given the ongoing labor shortage it is far from being fulfilled," he said. "In fact, additional immigration restrictions are being put in place for purely political reasons. In order to make a real difference in easing the labor shortage the U.S. would need to significantly revamp immigration policy, in particular to simply and encourage skill-based migration." <h2>"Immigration has been a crucial force behind the US economic growth" </h2>As employers are finding, immigrants are key to building different aspects of the US economy.
