As Apple became the first US company to touch the $2 trillion mark, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) announced to launch an investigation to find whether its mobile devices and Macs violate patents owned by Japanese consumer electronics company <keyword id="9790052" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="maxell">Maxell</keyword>. The USITC on Wednesday voted to institute an investigation of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers and identified "Apple Inc. of Cupertino, CA, as the respondent in this investigation". The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Maxell of Kyoto, Japan, on July 17. Maxell filed a complaint with the USITC, alleging that Apple's mobile devices, tablets, smartwatches, and laptop computers violate patents related to passcode unlocking, WiFi assist, mobile communications, facial recognition in the Photos app, and more. "The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the US and sale of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers that infringe patents asserted by the complainant," the USITC said in a statement. "The complainant requests that the USITC issue a limited exclusion order and a cease and desist order". The USITC will make a final determination in the investigation as early as possible. Within 45 days after the institution of the investigation, the USITC will set a target date for completing the investigation. Maxell manufactures consumer electronics like batteries, wireless charging products, storage devices, LCD and laser projectors and functional materials. Apple was yet to comment on the USITC statement. Taiyo, an 8-year-old otter at Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa in Tokyo, was brought out on November 22 to try to predict the winner, per <a href="https://www.sankei.com/article/20221124-JYFAOPABX5OV3BT34AYLAVP5KM/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sankei News</a>. This was one day before Japan's <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/japan-stun-germany-with-late-strikes-world-cup-2022-11-23/">November 23 match against Germany</a>, who were the favorites to win that match-up. But Taiyo snubbed the red bucket with the German flag and the yellow bucket with the word "draw" on it. Clutching a miniature soccer ball in his claws, he scooted over to a blue bucket — representing Japan's Samurai Blue soccer team — and plopped the ball in. A day later, Japan beat four-time world champions Germany 2-1. Following Japan's win, Japanese soccer fans started praising the otter for being "amazing" and "extremely competent," reported <a href="https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20221124/p2g/00m/0sp/025000c">The Mainichi</a>. Some Twitter users, too, were elated by Taiyo the otter's accurate prediction. "Lmao the otter made me $150. Ty Mr otter," <a href="https://twitter.com/jakehalloran1/status/1595437475522088961?s=20&amp;t=9CSDgKitKlCe4zoD_fiogw">wrote</a> one Twitter user. Japan has used otters in the past as a means of predicting World Cup match victories. But an otter named Chippu in Himeji mistakenly predicted Japan's loss during a 2014 match against Greece. The otter <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/japan-ties-greece-world-cup-japanese-otters-prediction/story?id=24217914">picked Greece to win</a>, but the match ended in a draw. Japan's <a href="https://www.nippon.com/en/japan-topics/g02216/">next match</a> is against Costa Rica on November 27.

Over $650,000 went to the same <keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law">law</keyword> firm that tried and failed to place Kanye West on the ballot in another swing state.In a post on Thursday, PA Spotlight revealed that the Pennsylvania Senate Republican Caucus, which controls the commonwealth's upper chamber, spent a total of $1,042,200 in the runup to November trying to restrict methods of voting. In particular, the state <keyword id="107893" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="GOP">GOP</keyword> sought to overturn key provisions of Act 77, <a href="https://www.publicsource.org/trump-politicized-mail-in-voting-in-2020-pa-republicans-supported-it-originally/">a law passed in 2019</a> - with unanimous support from Senate Republicans - that allowed voters to request <keyword id="9295414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mail-in-ballots">mail-in ballots</keyword> for any reason.At the time, the Pennsylvania state Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman called the legislation "<a href="https://twitter.com/JakeCorman/status/1189346589598539776?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">the most historic reform bill we've done</a>." But as time went on, Republicans began to see the measure as a boon to their political opponents, with Democratic voters far more likely to vote by mail during the pandemic. The Senate GOP also sought to prevent those ballots from being placed in secure drop boxes and to throw out millions of mail-in votes altogether, an effort <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pennsylvania-supreme-court-dismisses-another-gop-election-lawsuit-2020-11">rejected by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court</a>.According to PA Spotlight, money on such litigation went to two firms, the bulk of it going to Holtzman, Vogel, Josefiak, and Torchinksy, founded by a former lawyer for the Republican National Committee. That firm also tried to place Kanye West <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-west-suing-wisconsin-and-ohio-ballot-2020-8">on the ballot in Wisconsin</a>.Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxell, and Hippell also received just under $385,000 in tax collars for election work in Pennsylvania. Lawrence Tabas, chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, is a partner at the firm, PA Spotlight reported.Neither Tabas nor the Senate Republican Caucus immediately responded to Insider's requests for comment.In the meantime, having lost in the courts, Pennsylvania Republicans are turning to legislation: On Thursday, state Sen. "There are a few real explorers in there who have done things people have never done before, that have pushed the boundaries in many ways.
