But, like anything else, there are risks associated with the event."This is a high-stakes, highly complex upgrade to the core blockchain that's already protecting more than $300 billion in assets," Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, said in a webcast this week. "So there are significant risks."Expected to bring lower costs and speedier transactions on the blockchain, the merge has been long-anticipated and its launch has gone through a series of delays — possibly allowing competitors to snap up market share.Ethereum developer Tim Beiko said last week the upgrade <a href="https://twitter.com/TimBeiko/status/1514010098145759232">wouldn't happen in June</a> as originally expected, but likely in the few months after. Btiwise's Hougan said even further delays can't be ruled out."Complex software launches are often delayed, and this is a complex software launch," he said."So while most people expect it to occur sometime in the next handful of months, there is a possibility of further delays," he added. "It's also worth noting that proof of stake systems are more complex than proof of work systems."Hougan also noted the process might not be free of glitches, even though it would be well tested."Particularly as you go through an upgrade in the transition, there is of course the opportunity or the possibility of unintentional bugs or exploits being introduced into the ethereum blockchain," he said.Despite the intent focus of developers, Hougan said he's seen other blockchains stumble when it comes to big upgrades. So, the risk of that happening to ethereum's merge is not zero, he said.Another risk is that the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism is not as battle-tested as proof-of-work, which has proven to secure large blockchain networks for the last 12 years."Proof of work has been around for more than a dozen years. It's periodically stored more than a trillion dollars in assets, and it is a well-proven system.""Proof of stake is a newer system and therefore has more inherent risk, and at least its security guarantees may be discounted slightly," he said, referring to the algorithm's functionality being tested by several ethereum competititors that have incorporated it into their blockchains like solana.Despite a number of delays to the merge in the past, many crypto enthusiasts are confident the upgrade will take place in the next few months, but even the developers don't know exactly when that might be. "If you ask an ethereum developer when the merge is coming, the most likely answer you're gonna get is 'when it's ready' — which is the right approach… given how technically challenging, and how mission-critical this upgrade is," David Lawant, director of research at Bitwise, said in the webcast, adding that the blockchain is still going through a testing phase now."Ethereum has a number of test networks that the merge is currently being implemented on. The latest tests have been successful. And we do think that there is a possibility that the merge will happen sometime in the third quarter. Today, both presidential campaigns are posturing in positive ways toward the crypto industry," Hougan said.After the election, bitcoin's path looks less clear.As markets fixate on the result of the November contest, there's no clear catalyst for further gains after that."Sharks need to swim to survive. If they stop they will die," Hougan said, adding, "Bitcoin is sort of like that. It is, in the end, a narrative- and growth-focused entity."He says, though, that the narrative could point toward greater institutional adoption, or toward more potentially real-world applications for crypto.<h3 id="708c0883-e7e4-404f-832d-c8a5981e5aa1">Spot ETFs will gain momentum</h3>Among the bullish drivers, the spot ETFs that drove a rally earlier this year will likely still have a positive impact."I think Bitcoin ETF flows will accelerate in Q4 and then accelerate again in 2025. "This has been bitcoin's IPO moment," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmmrLxfdHxk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hougan said on CNBC</a>. "It's in a new era of price discovery, and I think prices could go substantially higher from here."Bitwise has its own bitcoin ETF that was one of nearly a dozen approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission at the beginning of January. <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/BTC-USD/history/">Bitcoin</a> is trading around $63,000 on Thursday, edging closer back to all-time highs of $69,000. BlackRock is a fund manager. It creates, manages, and distributes funds. It has 1,300 ETFs! This is literally what it does! And investors knew about <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/coinbase-blackrock-partnership-digital-asset-news-crypto-bitcoin-markets-inflation-2022-8">the partnership</a> BlackRock struck last year with Coinbase, the crypto exchange BlackRock said it would use as a bitcoin custodian on behalf of the iShares Bitcoin Trust if regulators approve it.The effort to launch a spot bitcoin ETF, though, is a meaningful development in cryptoland. Enter the outlandish comments about BlackRock's position in the crypto market, another front in the scrutiny around the firm. "So BlackRock, Citadel, Deutsche Bank and NASDAQ have all started to enter the crypto space in the last week. They've bullied out participants so they can scoop up cheap coins. The trajectory for crypto has never been more clear," one venture capitalist <a href="https://twitter.com/adamscochran/status/1671173780142530561?s=20">wrote to his 197,000 followers.</a>A business podcast host <a href="https://twitter.com/scottmelker/status/1671117150264647684?s=20">tweeted to his 903,000 followers</a>: "They're not trying to kill crypto. They're trying to kill the current crypto industry and then hand it over to their cronies. Citadel, BlackRock, Schwab JPMorgan…" (These tweets refer to Citadel, the hedge fund founded and led by billionaire Ken Griffin. But it is market maker Citadel Securities, also founded by Griffin, that backed a recently launched crypto exchange called EDX.) A BlackRock spokesperson declined to comment.Of course, the firm's sheer size has long been the subject of criticism from regulators and officials who take issue with its dominance in the ETF market. But the ESG investing-related <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/esg-sustainable-investing-hsbc-backlash-2022-5">scrutiny that ramped up last year</a> has brought a new awareness of BlackRock to the mainstream. That's pushed BlackRock to get ahead of theories and videos that spread widely online; I spoke with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackrock-social-media-tiktok-2022-5">Rich Latour, the firm's global head of content and media about that</a> a year ago. "We've certainly done research, and we know that there's a perception that a lot is going on in BlackRock that people don't necessarily understand," Latour said last June.

BlackRock applied to launch a bitcoin fund. Then came the conspiracy theories.

Hougan outlined two other main reasons why the company decided to ditch its request with the regulator. The first was that they believe that it would underperform spot bitcoin because "bitcoin futures have historically traded in contango," Hougan said in a Twitter <a href="https://twitter.com/Matt_Hougan/status/1458565826072678408">post</a>.Hougan explained in an earlier <a href="https://twitter.com/Matt_Hougan/status/1450228444357296129">tweet</a> that contango was a term used to describe a market phenomenon where the futures price is higher than the spot bitcoin price. The company said its analysis showed contango could cost investors 5-10% per year before <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/compounding.asp">compounding</a>.The other reason was that a bitcoin futures ETF was proving costly. The US company initially believed it would be possible to hold both futures and Canadian-listed bitcoin exchange traded products in a 1940 Act ETF, Hougan said. "Tax laws make it costly to gain 100% exposure to futures, so flexibility could have lowered costs. Unfortunately, that's not permitted (at the moment)," he said.Also, bitcoin futures ETFs had already soaked up all available capacity at futures commission merchants. Hougan said he believed this would ease over time, but for now, it was yet another expense."The result? Costs on top of costs, plus added complexity," he said. The first futures ETFs, offered by <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/proshares-bitcoin-futures-fund-fastest-etf-top-1-billion-aum-2021-10">ProShares </a>(BITO) and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/bitcoin-etf-valkyrie-futures-crypto-nasdaq-trading-proshares-vaneck-2021-10">Valkyrie</a> (BTF), were approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission and started trading in October, thereby giving investors exposure to bitcoin without holding the coin."None of this means that futures-based ETFs are bad, and<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%24BITO&amp;src=cashtag_clicklick"> $BITO</a> and<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%24BTF&amp;src=cashtag_clicklick"> $BTF</a> are thoughtful versions," Hougan said. "But we believe most long-term investors would be better served by spot exposure."The company said it would pursue the goal of a spot bitcoin ETF. Bitwise filed for a bitcoin spot ETF on October 14 with the New York Stock Exchange, according to another <a href="https://twitter.com/Matt_Hougan/status/1448644459122475008?s=20">Twitter</a> post from Hougan. "Ultimately, what many investors want is a spot bitcoin ETF. We think that's possible," Hougan said. Hougan said the first bitcoin spot ETF was <a href="https://decrypt.co/62912/high-profile-bitcoin-etf-applications">filed</a> in 2013. To date, the SEC has rejected every application for these products. Asset manager <keyword id="12344396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="valkyrie" source="Orion">Valkyrie</keyword> applied in January this year to list a spot bitcoin fund, but the SEC extended the deadline to January 7, 2022. Others awaiting approval include US investment group Stone Ridge, WisdomTree, asset manager and SkyBridge hedge fund to name a few, according to Decrypt.

The former chief executive of the think tank Inside ETFs joined California-based Bitwise Asset Management as VP of research and development. He's got a lot on his to-do list. But his main task is simple: Making cryptocurrency investing less of a Wild West. "There is a general approach to the index market, but there is no general approach to indexing in the crypto market," he said. "That's what I'll be working on."We caught up with Hougan to talk about some of the questions he's grappling with and what he thinks is keeping Wall Street from diving into crypto. The following interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity:Frank Chaparro: What are some of the questions you are grappling with in your new position?Matt Hougan: When I joined the ETF world 15 years ago, there was a lack of understanding about how they worked, and I see a similar situation in crypto. There's a lack of understanding about how to classify different assets in the space, how to fit it into a portfolio, et cetera. It is super engaging to wrestle with those questions in a new space. And I am still figuring out the answers to these questions since I am only one week in. Chaparro: In a note to clients, JPMorgan said bitcoin could serve as an addition to a portfolio for an investor looking for a non-correlative asset. Where do you see it fitting in a portfolio?Hougan: I think it shares a lot of similarities with early-stage venture investments, inasmuch as both fit into that high-risk, high-return bucket. These are both investments for people investing long-term. It also fits into the alternative bucket. Cryptocurrency provides investors with returns that aren't correlated.In fact, the long-term correlation is close to zero. That's because the long-term driver of the crypto market revolves around the speed of the technology and its ability to displace existing networks, which is fundamentally different from the elements that drive the broader market. So a big global funk wouldn't have that big of an impact on the crypto space, since it wouldn't derail the importance of distributed ledger technology. Chaparro: Typically, only the most savvy investors can get in on venture capital deals. Is it dangerous that crypto is open to any mom-and-pop investor with a Coinbase account?<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">HouganMatt Hougan</div></div></div>Hougan: The difference between crypto and venture capital is that crypto is publicly traded. It's basically publicly traded venture capital investments. And, yes, that encourages bad behavior. More people lose money from panicking at the wrong time.We want folks to focus on the long-term role of crypto in a portfolio. It's something I am very passionate about. And we think a diversified index investment is a step forward. Chaparro: You come from an area of Wall Street most would deem "traditional." Are folks from that world coming to you asking about this space? How about asset managers and banks? Are they getting closer to offering their clients access to this space?Hougan: Yes. My email, LinkedIn, and Twitter are all blowing up with these guys because they want to understand it. But Wall Street is a risk-minimizing machine. When they see things they don't fully understand, they see risk as a four letter word. The reflexive response is to just cut it off. For end clients, however, this pushes them out of the regulated institutional environment and leaves them alone to navigate this risk through venues that might be less secure. But it's hard for larger institutions to be on the cutting edge. An ETF veteran who ditched Wall Street for crypto explains how bitcoin can fit into a portfolio

Since Bitwise launched the fund, Coinbase has announced its intention to enter the cryptocurrency index business with its own fund. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/coinbase-cryptocurrency-index-fund-2018-3">The so-called Coinbase Index Fund</a> will give investors access to the four cryptocurrencies listed on Coinbase's GDAX exchange. Matt Hougan, a 15-year-long veteran of the exchange-traded fund industry, recently joined Bitwise as VP of research and development, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/finance-veteran-matt-hougan-explains-why-wall-street-isnt-diving-into-bitcoin-2018-2">Business Insider previously reported</a>. Bitcoin soared close to $20,000 a coin at the end of 2017. But it has been under pressure since the beginning of 2018, fueled by concerns of a regulatory crackdown in the US and Asia. On top of that, a bitcoin exchange-traded fund, which many thought would help pour retail money into the cryptocurrency, appears to be off the table for at least the first-half of the year. Still, the number of cryptocurrency-focused hedge funds continues to rise, according to a report by Reuters. The number of such funds reached a record of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-hedgefunds-bitcoin/number-of-crypto-hedge-funds-surges-amid-bitcoin-volatility-idUSKCN1FZ189">226 funds</a>, up from just 55 at the end of August, financial-technology analytics provider Autonomous NEXT estimates.
