Researchers have created the <keyword id="24099848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="thinnest-spaghetti" source="keywords">thinnest spaghetti</keyword> ever, measuring just 372 nanometers across. That’s roughly 200 times thinner than a human hair! But this isn’t a culinary breakthrough — it’s a scientific one. This “nanopasta” holds promise for revolutionary applications in medicine and industry. <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">A spaghetti revolution in the lab</h2>The spaghetti was made using electrospinning, a technique where an electric charge pulls a flour-based mixture through a needle to form nanofibers.: “To make spaghetti, you push a mixture of water and flour through metal holes,” explained co-author Dr. Adam Clancy. “In our study, we did the same except we pulled our flour mixture through with an electrical charge. It’s literally spaghetti but much smaller.” The strands are so fine they can’t be seen clearly with visible light and had to be measured using a scanning electron microscope. They can also help with bone regeneration by acting as scaffolding for tissue growth, or for drug delivery, since their microscopic size allows for precise medical applications. “Nanofibers, such as those made of starch, show potential for use in wound dressings as they are very porous,” remarked co-author Professor Gareth Williams. “In addition, nanofibers are being explored for use as a scaffold to regrow tissue, as they mimic the extracellular matrix — a network of proteins and other molecules that cells build to support themselves.” Making nanofibers traditionally involves extracting and purifying starch, a resource-intensive process. The team found a greener solution by starting with flour, which is rich in starch. Dr. Clancy said: “Starch is a promising material to use as it is abundant and renewable — it is the second largest source of biomass on Earth, behind cellulose — and it is biodegradable, meaning it can be broken down in the body.” Using flour, however, wasn’t without its challenges. Impurities like proteins and cellulose made the mixture more viscous and harder to spin into fibers. To tackle this, the researchers used formic acid instead of water, as it breaks down the starch’s tightly packed helical structures. The acid evaporated during the process, leaving behind ultrathin strands of nanospaghetti. <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Not for your dinner table</h2>While this innovation is exciting, don’t expect it to replace your fettuccine anytime soon. Professor Williams points out that the nanospaghetti isn’t really as useful as pasta, sadly, as it would overcook in less than a second, before you could take it out of the pan. Instead, the team is focusing on the practical uses of nanospaghetti in fields like healthcare. Dr. Clancy added: “We’ve shown that a simpler way to make nanofibers using flour is possible. The next step would be to investigate the properties of this product. We would want to know, for instance, how quickly it disintegrates, how it interacts with cells, and if you could produce it at scale.” For now, this world-record-breaking spaghetti is a testament to the possibilities of nanotechnology. In 2010, China imposed strict rare earth quotas, citing environmental concerns and resource preservation. The move sent prices up sharply and prompted the US, the European Union, and Japan to file a complaint against China for unfair trade practices at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/dispu_e/cases_e/ds431_e.htm">World Trade Organization</a>. China lost the case and lifted exported quotas in 2015.Various countries tried to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.circularise.com/blogs/the-rare-earth-problem-sustainable-sourcing-and-supply-chain-challenges">diversify</a> their rare earth supply chains in the wake of China's quotas in the 2010s, but success has been limited due to the high cost of investment and environmental concerns.There are renewed efforts to boost global production in the face of rising tensions.In 2022, the US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/09/20/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-takes-further-action-to-strengthen-and-secure-critical-mineral-supply-chains/">Department of Defense</a> awarded $45 million to MP Materials for rare earth oxide processing, and in 2023, it awarded over $288 million to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessdefense.gov/news/2023/DoD-Awards-Key-Contract-for-Domestic-Heavy-Rare-Earth-Separation-Capability.html">Lynas USA</a> to set up commercial-scale rare earth oxide production facilities.<h2 id="c8073b51-666c-4b37-8da2-99bb4249c25d">How is China leveraging rare earths?</h2>Beijing's moves to control critical minerals and rare earths are part of a toolbox Beijing has developed over the last four years, Rick Waters, the managing director of Eurasia Group's China practice, said at a press briefing.During President Donald Trump's first term, the US and China slapped retaliatory tariffs on each other. But we decided to move to Spain for a cultural experience and live outside the US for a bit. When we moved from the US to Spain, we only brought with us four duffel bags and four backpacks. We decided that if our belongings didn't fit in those bags, we wouldn't need it. And that reasoning, without doubt, has proven to be entirely true.We live in an apartment with simple decor and enough dishes and utensils for our family of four. Here in Spain, we own clothes that can fit in a small wardrobe closet, and we share one car to help us get to events that are hard to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-united-states-to-spain-surprising-things-2022-5">access on public transportation</a>.Our boys traded their ATVs for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bird-uber-lyft-lime-e-scooters-compared-lyft-best-2020-1">electric scooters</a>, which helps them get to local parks faster. The "Keeping up with the Joneses" mentality in the US is real, and we have found freedom going from possessing things to possessing experiences instead.For our family, we have learned that when you give up space to store these items, you're forced to choose their importance to you. As I purged and donated personal items from our home, I needed to look at each item and acknowledge that while I wanted it at some point, I didn't truly need it. When you leave behind a life full of things, you realize the freedom that comes along with it.Downsizing has also taught us a thing or two about requests for holiday gifts from family and friends. How wonderful it feels to give someone something you care about, yet more often, simply spending time with that person holds a much greater value.No matter where my American family and I may live in the future, moving into a smaller apartment in Spain taught us that all of the important things we need in life aren't things. It's my family that I can't replace.

Lebanese health officials say the detonations injured at least 2,700 people and killed nine more.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/17/world/middleeast/israel-hezbollah-pagers-explosives.html">The New York Times</a> reported that Hezbollah had purchased the pagers from Gold Apollo, a manufacturer in Taiwan.The Times cited unnamed officials, at least some of whom were American, and wrote that Hezbollah had primarily obtained the AP924 model of Gold Apollo's pagers, though it bought another three models.The outlet further reported that two officials said Israeli forces had planted small amounts of explosive material — as little as one or two ounces — next to the pagers' batteries with remote switches.But Gold Apollo's founder, Hsu Ching-Kuang, told reporters on Wednesday that his company did not make the exploded pagers.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/gold-apollo-says-it-did-not-make-pagers-used-lebanon-explosion-2024-09-18/">Per Reuters</a>, he said the devices were instead manufactured by a European firm that had the right to use Gold Apollo's brand."The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it," he said, according to the outlet.Hsu called the incident "very embarrassing," but said his company had also been made a victim, per Reuters.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-planted-explosives-hezbollahs-taiwan-made-pagers-sources-say-2024-09-18/">Reuters had earlier reported</a> similar findings to The Times, citing an unnamed senior Lebanese source who said that Hezbollah had ordered 5,000 beepers, including the AP924, from Gold Apollo.The same source told the outlet that Mossad, Israel's intelligence service, had planted a board inside the pagers that contained explosive material and could remotely receive a detonation code. ""It's very hard to detect it through any means. Even with any device or scanner," the source said, per Reuters.The outlet added that it had examined some of the exploding pagers and said their design and stickers matched devices built by Gold Apollo.Gold Apollo and the Israeli Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.Hezbollah and Lebanon have both blamed Israel for the exploding pagers, though Tel Aviv has not claimed responsibility.Pagers became a significant part of Hezbollah's communication network earlier this year, when its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hezbollah-decided-months-ago-switch-from-cellphones-pagers-just-exploded-2024-9">leaders decided to use the devices out of concern</a> that its cellphone network had been compromised.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/pagers-drones-how-hezbollah-aims-counter-israels-high-tech-surveillance-2024-07-09/">A July report from Reuters</a> citing multiple sources familiar with Hezbollah said that the group had made the switch due to the loss of several commanders amid hostilities with Israel.The exploding pagers have led to heightened fears that Israel and Hezbollah may escalate their conflict into a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wider-war-hezbollah-could-unleash-unprecedented-missile-barrage-against-israel-2024-7">wide-scale or direct war.</a>Both have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-hezbollah-exchange-fire-major-regional-escalation-2024-8">conducting cross-border strikes</a> against each other for months in the wake of Hamas' October 7 attack and Israel's subsequent deadly campaign in Gaza. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of residents on either side.Before the pagers exploded on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his administration's war goal of returning Israeli evacuees to their homes near Lebanon."The Security Cabinet has updated the objectives of the war to include the following: Returning the residents of the north securely to their homes," Netanyahu's office said in a statement. "Israel will continue to act to implement this objective," it added.He had made no comment or hint implying involvement or planning in any specific attack on Hezbollah.

It had clocked Rs 3,741 crore net profit during the fourth quarter of the last fiscal, the company said in an exchange filing on Friday. The company's total income also fell to Rs 46,511.28 crore from Rs 47,427 crore in January-March FY23. During the period under review, its expenses stood at Rs 44,401 crore, as against Rs 43,170 crore a year ago. Among the expenses, the cost of raw materials consumed by the company surged to Rs 24,541 crore from 23,905 crore in the January-March FY23. While "other expenses" increased to Rs 7,197 crore from Rs 6,653 crore in the year-ago period. In FY24, the net profit rose to Rs 8,973 crore from Rs 4139 crore in FY23. The income for the full year stood at Rs 1,76,010 crore, up from Rs 1,66,990 crore. The board of directors of the company announced a final dividend of Rs 7.30 for FY24. These are the raw materials for model "training," in industry parlance."This is the secret story just beneath the surface of what's happening," former Github CEO Nat Friedman said in a recent interview with tech analyst Ben Thompson.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gpu-rich-vs-gpu-poor-tech-companies-in-each-group-2023-8">Nvidia GPUs</a> are the main hardware required for AI model training."But the other key input is data," Friedman said. "So there is currently happening beneath the surface, a shadow war for data where the largest AI labs are spending huge amounts of money, like huge amounts of money, to acquire more valuable tokens, either paying experts to generate it, working through labeling companies."<h2>Scraped from the internet</h2>A lot of this training data has been scraped from the internet and used without permission.Tech companies, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-could-run-out-text-train-chatbots-chatgpt-llm-2023-7">hungry for even more training data</a>, are also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-updated-terms-to-use-customer-data-to-train-ai-2023-9">granting themselves new permissions</a> to use a lot more of your information.The use of information scraped from the internet has sparked a debate about the future of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-copyright-office-new-rules-generative-ai-2023-8">copyright</a> and licensing in this new AI world.Online communities based on the sharing of free information are also being upended. "As a media owner, it's a major issue, because I do go to the models, and I'll find material from Time magazine in there and go, 'Wait a minute, that's my content,'" he added.More websites are blocking web crawlers, which are the technical tools used to prowl the web scooping up data for AI model training. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-gptbot-web-crawler-content-creators-ai-bots-2023-8">GPTbot</a>, from ChatGPT creator OpenAI, was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-openai-gptbot-crawler-major-companies-media-outlets-blocking-2023-8">blocked by more than 15% of the 100 most-popular websites</a> in just two weeks, including Amazon and Quora, Insider reported in August.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-to-charge-ai-companies-api-content-use-2023-4">Reddit is demanding to be paid for its data</a>, which is a common source of AI model training.LexisNexis, a leading provider of legal information, has had to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/relx-lexisnexis-guards-legal-data-ai-bots-2023-8">warn customers</a> not to upload or share its data with AI models and related bots.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-comedian-sarah-silverman-is-suing-the-company-behind-chatgpt-2023-7">Sarah Silverman sued OpenAI and Meta</a>, alleging they used her book without compensation or permission to train their AI models.Over 8,000 authors, including Margaret Atwood and James Patterson, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-companies-thousands-authors-demand-compensation-for-using-works-2023-7">signed an open letter</a> demanding compensation from AI companies for using their works to train AI without permission.<h2>Efforts to avoid legal risk</h2>AI companies are responding, mostly by trying to reduce legal risks.Meta and other tech companies have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-llama-2-data-train-ai-models-2023-7">stopped disclosing the training data</a> they use to train AI models.
