Yes, the T branding has crossed the flagship barrier and has entered the Nord realm. The idea is similar, though; the 'T' variant of the device is usually a mid-year or, in this case, an annual upgrade to the flagship. The Nord 2T promises to improve upon the experience that the original Nord 2 delivered. On paper, it does show potential with a promising SoC, but does it translate to performance? Also, where does it stand against its counterparts from Realme and Xiaomi? I answer these questions in my comprehensive review after six days of usage. Price and Availability OnePlus Nord 2T is available in two variants — first, a base variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage starts at ₹28,999. Then there is a variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage available at ₹33,999. You can buy the Nord 2T from Amazon and OnePlus's official website. Let me start with the returning alert slider. A fan favorite for a good reason, this practical hardware choice has been missing on the latest Nord series smartphones, namely Nord CE and Nord CE2 Lite. And yes, OnePlus did get some heavy flack for it. But, to me, it's not just the clean OS experience that makes a OnePlus device unique, but also little quirks like these. So, yes, it's here, and it works as effectively as it always did; there is no easier way for changing your ringtone profile. Moving to the actual design language for the device, the Nord 2T comes across as a fusion between the Nord 2 and OnePlus 9RT. It's the same form factor as the Nord 2, but the in-hand feel is premium like that of 9RT. The device feels heavier than the original Nord 2, but it's not bothering; it feels like a solid smartphone. I have big hands and did not face any issues using the device, even with single-handed use. However, users with small hands might have to use both hands more often than not. The variant with me is in the Gray Shadow color, a shade lighter than the hacker black we see on the 9RT. With a micro bidding texture, the finish on the back reminds us of the sandstone finish on the OnePlus 1. It's not glossy but has a texture that does not sustain smudges and is easy to clean. There is another jaded blue color available for the device, but I would suggest sticking with gray shadow; it looks different and has a utility factor to it. <div type="image" title="Grey shadow color has a texture back" msid="92590453" hostid="261" sizebytes="357302" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Grey shadow color has a texture back&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> As for the build quality, we know - there is a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and back, which protects it against scratches. But unfortunately, the device has no official IP rating, just like the Nord 2. So yes, you have to be careful around water with this one. It can handle light splashes but don't get too risky with it. Like most other OnePlus devices, the Nord 2T also uses a familiar and bulky camera module. However, at least this time, they have it justified with three different sensors. Coming back, the camera bump is chunky, and I felt the corners occasionally coming in contact with my hand. However, this problem can resolve with the bundled TPU case. And a third-party case might get rid of it altogether. Other design elements are generic. For example, on the right side of the device, you will find the power lock and unlock button. In contrast, the left-hand side features the volume rockers. Both these physical installations feel tactile. Underneath, right next to the USB Type-C charging port, you will find the SIM card tray. Nord 2T is a dual SIM smartphone that supports two nano SIMs. Unfortunately, it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is a tradeoff for some, but not surprising. The original Nord 2 didn't have one either. Ironically, it is present on the CE 2 and CE 2 lite. Overall, the Nord 2T is the best-looking Nord so far for me. The color scheme combined with the in-hand feel completes its arch. Display OnePlus Nord 2T essentially uses the same display we saw on the Nord 2. It's a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED punch-hole display with an 1800 x 2400 pixels resolution. In classic OnePlus fashion, minimal bezels around the display are always welcome. <div type="image" title="Nord 2T features a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED Display" msid="92590488" hostid="261" sizebytes="27996" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nord 2T features a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED Display&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> On paper, the specs are identical to the Nord 2, but OnePlus claims that the experience is more fluid on this one. Having used the Nord 2 extensively, I can say it's partially true. The Nord 2 T's 6.43-inch panel is the correct size to watch your TV shows and movies. The screen retains essential details, with the image reproduction being fairly accurate at most times. The black levels are satisfactory, and I have not noticed anything completely off so far. For reference, I watched The Boys Season 3 on the Nord 2T, a show with an equal amount of well-lit and dark frames. With HDR 10+ support, the picture quality only improves, and with most OTT apps supporting HDR10+ content, it is a visual treat. Heads up, though, turn off auto-brightness while watching content on the Nord 2T. In my experience, auto-brightness usually hampers the experience while watching something. Also, try not to use the device while lying down; it's heavy. And as it has happened with me, it does hurt when it falls on your face. The peak brightness on display is 600 nits, making it easier to look at it under direct sunlight. So, no struggle there. You also get the always-on display option on the Nord 2T, which is extremely useful but does cost you some battery life. I highlight that in the battery experience section. Moving on, the experience is favorable but nothing that helps us differentiate this screen from the one on Nord 2. The difference starts to show up when you interact with the panel. This aspect has got to do with the revised MediaTek Dimensity chipset onboard. While Nord 2 never missed a beat regarding interaction, it did have some sloppy edges. 2T eliminates those. The experience so far has been wholesome, with the panel not missing out on a single command. Swipe, gestures, tap, or pinch- I am yet to observe any glitch or a miss. This experience is also translated to gaming. The 90Hz refresh rate, while being a bit outclassed given the 120Hz panels we see on mid-rangers these days, holds up well. The motion switches to the axis, and reflexes are quick in action and reaction. The graphics are fluid, and the screen does justice to the game visually. Unfortunately, there is no adaptive refresh rate feature on 2T, which I especially missed while switching between social media and casual web surfing. You can either set it up on the standard 60Hz refresh rate or take it up a notch with 90Hz. I suggest sticking with the higher refresh rate for a more fluid experience. We also get an in-display sensor on the Nord 2T, unlocking the phone in a snap. But, you do have to exert some amount of pressure on it. A light tap mostly doesn't do the job. An observation I have made with every Nord device since last year. Complimenting the display is a dual speaker set-up on the Nord 2T 5G. Amply loud, it does add a flair to your viewing experience, and you can skip on pairing your earphones with this one. Software &amp; UI <div type="image" title="Nord 2T runs on Android 12" msid="92590498" hostid="261" sizebytes="283564" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nord 2T runs on Android 12&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> OnePlus Nord 2T 5G runs on Android 12 out of the box, paired with Oxygen OS 12.1. Keeping up with the brand's legacy, the OS is clean and minimalistic. Apart from some OnePlus apps like that of a store, community, and Netflix, there are no surprising ads to hamper your experience. While the Oxygen OS experience is as clean as possible, I am still not a big fan of the app icon designs and animations we see on 12.1. I, for one, miss the older circular app icon designs; they looked cleaner to my eyes. While the boxy app icons can be shrunk, they still give a cluttered feel. This is a subjective issue; that being said, it does not hamper the user experience in day-to-day usage. Aesthetically, we get back OnePlus's signature features. The smartphone lets you tweak themes, colors, font styles, wallpapers, and even fingerprint animation. I usually like to go around with the stock experience that a manufacturer has curated for the consumer, and with that, I was satisfied. But if you want personalizations, you can go to town with this one. Another hot topic of debate with newer OnePlus devices is the shelf that comes down with a swipe on the top right. This UI feature has received mixed reactions. As mentioned in my Nord CE 2 Lite review, it also takes some time to adjust, but from there, it's a smooth sail. It is a better version of the drop-down menu we are accustomed to, with added prompts like a step counter and even widgets for emails. With most manufacturers promising future updates, OnePlus has also sailed the same boat. As a result, the Nord 2T will be getting Android updates for the next two years, making it a safe investment for most general users. Performance The OnePlus Nord 2T is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1300 5G processor. An upgrade from the Dimensity 1200 we saw on the Nord 2, the new SoC packs a punch. The device with me packs in 12GB of RAM, which can be expanded by an additional 7GB with RAM extension. Simply put, you can use the device's internal storage as RAM to hold on to heavier apps requiring faster computing. Case in points - games. However, in my five days of usage, I have yet to experience the need for more RAM. The 12GB base RAM is sufficient for handling multiple applications, mainly social media and light games like temple run. In my experience, apps like Instagram have stayed put for upto a day without any frame drops or a lag. However, the situation is not similar for heavier apps like BGMI, which might shut down more often than not after a while. Touching upon gaming performance, I made Nord 2T my primary gaming device for this week. The games in question were - BGMI and Asphalt 9. Starting with BGMI- playing the game on UHD settings, the performance was at par and, in some places, better than the original Nord 2. The game was set on a high frame rate, and the rendering wasn't choppy. I did not notice any stutter or ugly frame drops in these settings. After about 40 minutes of continuous gaming, the phone did start to warm up, but not to the point that it hampers your experience. I switched to Asphalt 9 afterward, and the performance was linear and at par with what I observed in BGMI. The internal storage on my review variant is 256GB, which should be sufficient for a heavy user. However, a light user can opt for 128GB. The battery situation on the Nord 2T is where things get complex. The smartphone comes with a 4500mAh battery, which supports 80W SuperVooc charging. OnePlus claims that we can charge from 1-70% in 15 minutes, while the 1-100% mark is reached in 27 minutes. The charging time is close to the claims. In my experience, the 1-70% mark was reached in 18 minutes, while the 100% mark took 35 minutes. This is with mobile data turned on and an active internet connection. Yes, these numbers are great, and according to OnePlus, they have the charging safety certified, ensuring the experience is not spoiled. There is also an option for optimized charging, which, after 79%, slows down the charging speed significantly. What I appreciate about it is the fact that we can turn it off voluntarily if we want the phone to charge faster at a particular time. However, the phone tends to lose battery as fast as it gains. In my personal experience so far, on a heavy day of usage, I was plugging the device in the evening every day. This involved games, emails, and streaming content along with calling. On a light day of usage, which skipped on gaming, I was plugging in the device at night. However, if you are using it primarily for social media and not demanding any high intense tasks from it, it should easily last a day. Another observation I made was that the phone loses power rapidly when sitting. This is more prominent with the always-on display, with the phone losing 4% of its charge within 25 minutes. However, the speed of this deduction significantly slows down when the phone goes below 80%. By saying this, I won't suggest you turn off the always-on display since that's an essential utility. But consider this a heads up. Camera OnePlus is playing big props on the camera of the Nord 2T. The smartphone comes with a triple camera set-up. The primary camera is a 50MP Sony IMX 766 sensor, which we saw on the previous Nord 2 and the 10R. This claim is 50% true, in my opinion. While the original Nord 2 produced crisp images in well-lit conditions with some saturation in reds, the Nord 2T improves upon it. <div type="image" title="Images in well-lit conditions are crisp" msid="92590585" hostid="261" sizebytes="107550" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Images in well-lit conditions are crisp&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> In natural lighting or ample lighting, the image results are surprisingly good. The images are well detailed, with colors mostly matching the subject in the frame. The issue remains the same with portrait shots, with the edge detection with the bokeh effect holding up well with a single subject in the frame but lagging with multiple people. The 8MP ultra-wide angle gives you a 120-degree field of view. So yes, it definitely expands the frame to cover more room. Worthy of your Instagram feed. The camera can record 4K videos at 30 and 60 fps, and the performance is suitable for basic usage. However, it might not be the best option if you want to make content with your device. You get additional features like dual video mode as well, which is helpful if you are a vlogger. The results do get better with the default AI turned off. Yes, AI is big time here with what I call an AI makeover. You can change your skin tone and even tweak your cheeks. I mentioned it in my previous reviews, I don't particularly appreciate promoting this, but there is a consumer out there who wants this all. Verdict The Nord 2T, while being the 3rd Nord device in the last six months, stands its ground. Unlike its siblings, the CE2 and CE2 Lite, the Nord 2T brings back the original idea behind the Nord moniker. In addition, it is bringing in fan-favorite features at a more affordable price point. I recommend this to people who want a solid 360-degree experience and standardized OnePlus deliverables for which the brand is famous: clean UI, decent cameras, fast battery charging, and stable performance. However, if you want to experiment, I recommend the Xiaomi 11X and Realme GT Neo 3. Both the devices are different from the Nord 2T in terms of placement and can be a more exciting option for consumers.

We saw two new foldable devices, TWS buds and wearables as well. Diversifying their smartwatch portfolio we now have a regular Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The Pro variant, as the name suggests, comes with some additional features like a larger battery and a rugged build. As lucrative as that may sound, it is in fact a niche device to be considered mostly by the users who have a use case for it. The device that conducts a more mass appeal is the regular Galaxy Watch 5. I have been using the Galaxy Watch 5 for a week now. It has been with me for my daily errands that involve shoots and my weight training sessions as well. Here is my comprehensive review. Price &amp; Availability The Galaxy Watch 5 is available in 2 sizes, both of which offer Bluetooth or Bluetooth &amp; LTE. The smaller variant with a 40mm dial size starts at ₹27,999 for the Bluetooth-only variant. While the Bluetooth &amp; LTE variant is priced at ₹32,999. The bigger 44mm variant starts at ₹30,999 with only Bluetooth. While the Bluetooth &amp; LTE variant is priced at ₹35,999. Starting with the obvious, we don’t have a rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 5, like we didn’t have one on the Galaxy Watch 4. This might have been a hard pill to swallow last year, but now we are accustomed to it. Replacing the rotating bezel means we get a very neat and minimalistic-looking dial which sports a unibody design. The design has grown on me over time. And made me acknowledge that I prefer a circular dial over a square one like the one on my Apple Watch SE. There are two hard press buttons on the dial, both customisable. They do complement the design well. I will share my opinion on the useability in the UI section of the review. The variant with me comes in a Sapphire colour which is a metallic shade of blue. The paired straps are of matte blue colour as well. This is a colour which definitely took some time for me to adjust to. Not because it looks bad but because it stands out. Especially if you wear basic clothes like I do, and don’t prefer going all fancy. If you are planning to buy one, I would recommend going for the graphite colour option, which is all black or you can mix and match bands anyway. So far, in a week of usage, I am yet to come across any major scratches that will make me skip a heartbeat. However, as is the case with most smartwatches, it will take micro scratches if it’s on your wrist 24x7. The watch also comes with IP68 certification which makes it water resistant upto 50 meters. I did not take it for swimming, but it did go through some sweaty gyming sessions and also a sauna. In both cases the smartwatch worked perfectly well, I could easily interact with the display as well and the response time was quick. With all those protective measures, Samsung has maintained the weight of the Galaxy Watch 5 at a respectable 35 grams. The dial is light and sits comfortably on the wrist, not jamming your movement, even while you are exercising. However, I would like to point out here, that if you have skinny wrists, then you should opt for the smaller 40mm variant. Especially if you plan to wear it while sleeping. Display <div type="image" title="The display on the Galaxy Watch 5 is top notch" msid="94688125" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The display on the Galaxy Watch 5 is top notch&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> After the design, it’s time to talk about the display. The Galaxy watch 5 features a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED screen, which spoiler alert - is amazing. It is a virtually bezel less panel which is aptly bright and also features an always on display option. The always on panel takes minimal amount of juice from the battery, but definitely adds a quality of life feature to the usage. The display in itself is very responsive and provides accurate color reproduction. Replacing the rotating bezel here is a digital bezel, and it works really well. Rotating your finger around the bezel provides you access to the applications on board. The digital bezel might not be as gratifying to interact with compared to the physical rotating bezel, but in no way is it less utilitarian. It makes scrolling through the interface seamless. It hardly missed my commands, and I would easily land up at the application I wanted to interact with, without any hassles. Even with this top tier display the Galaxy Watch 5’s screen suffers from the same issue that I face on all smartwatches including the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/garmin-venu-2-plus-review-great-for-fitness-enthusiasts-not-for-casual-buyers/articleshow/92975530.cms">Garmin Venu 2 Plus</a>, that I recently reviewed. I cannot interact with the watch with my gloves on. I ride my motorcycle with the gloves on. Hence if I am out, I would like to tend to notifications without taking them off. I hope smartwatch brands take cognizance of this issue, and we have a solution sooner than later. OS and User Interface <div type="image" title="Galaxy Watch 5 provides a buffet of options for customization" msid="94688177" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Galaxy Watch 5 provides a buffet of options for customization&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Pairing the Galaxy Watch 5 is as seamless as doing two taps. Especially if you are a Galaxy smartphone user which in my case was the Galaxy Z Flip 4. For other Android phones, downloading the companion app is one additional step. iPhone users note that the Galaxy Watch 5 is not yet compatible with iOS devices. This is a bit disappointing, especially for me since my primary device is in fact an iPhone 12. However, if you are an iPhone user the Apple Watch SE is an alternative in the same price bracket. Coming back to the user interface, the Galaxy Watch 5 runs on Google Wear OS with a Samsung One UI skin. This amalgamation of two behemoths on a wearable device could have gone entirely wrong, but fortunately it doesn’t. Combining One UI’s beautiful animations, easy to understand functions and quick response time with Wear OS DNA results stable and intuitive experience. The Galaxy Watch 5 can be given your own flavor thanks to the buffet of customisation options. From changing wallpapers, to adding themes the UI lets you play around as per your style. You can even customize the colour theme of individual elements on the screen which is fun to do. This makes the interaction even more personal. Customization also bounces over to the action buttons. The main switch with a red trim can be customized as a shortcut for upto two functions. These functions can be triggered by pressing it twice or a long press respectively. I had set the double press trigger as a shortcut to Samsung Health since that allows me easier access to my workout metrics. The long press for me was the power off shortcut. Things are not very democratic with the bottom trigger. Since it can be customized to either be a back switch or a shortcut for the recent apps menu. To the point that for me, the animations here are some of the best I have seen on a smartwatch. Maybe the best. Tap on any part of the icon, and it reacts in a unique way. For example, tapping on the step counter will take a glide and show you the steps. Another favorite of mine is how the stick figures are exercising when you select a workout. I also like the haptic feedback paired with the animations. It’s not too hard to disturb you, but effective enough for you to notice it. The utility of the UI here is also commendable. We see a bunch of apps that can be used effectively. Like the calculator app that also comes with the unit converter and a tip calculator for some reason. You also get a voice recorder on the watch, which for a journalist is fairly convenient. Since you can record a particular audio byte on a tap here. It is a niche use case, but important for me to highlight. You can also control the camera app from the watch, however it only lets you access the primary camera and not the front camera. Notifications pop ups and notification management is also a strong suite for the Galaxy Watch 5. The pop ups here are subtle and show up on top of the screen like a Galaxy phone. You can either tap on them or slide them to read later. It is also easy to clear notifications here. The ecosystem is strong here since answering notifications from the watch clears them from the device as well. You can also interact with notifications. You do get a full sized keyboard on the watch to type replies directly from the watch. And while it is as precise as it can be, you can’t write more than a sentence here. If you wish to respond in detail you can use audio dictation, which is generally more reliable. While that was for the things I liked, it’s time I highlight the not so good things with the UI. Starting with Bixby. I have not been very lucky with voice assistants on Android smartwatches, and unfortunately the case with the Galaxy Watch 5 remains the same. To be fair, Bixby is quick to respond but becomes sloppy in executing the tasks requested to do. To the point that I would generally give up and interact with the watch directly. This is a dud, especially for an Apple watch user like myself. There, simply saying Hey Siri will light up the Apple Watch and then you can ask for the world from it. I sincerely hope that Samsung makes it more user friendly in the future. Fortunately a saving grace is that you get Google Voice assistant here, but voice prompts are not the strongest suite there as well. Another surprising element for me was the selection of third party applications on the watch. For example we get the outlook application on the watch, but not gmail. I tried looking it up at the Playstore but couldn’t find it either. Yes we get notifications for gmail, but not having a native app on the watch is surprising to say the least. Fortunately music apps like Spotify and Youtube music are all here. Before closing this section, I have to share some thoughts on the virtual dial situation. Swiping your finger across the top half of the dial swings past a customisable set of tiles. This will need some getting used to, and the first couple of times you might miss out on the tyle you wanted to land at. But over time with muscle memory in place, it becomes easier to handle. Overall, the Galaxy Watch 5’s UI is solid as a complete package and definitely a step in the right direction for the wearable space. Performance On paper Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is loaded with every essential sensor you expect from a top tier smartwatch. And all of them mostly deliver precise data. Starting with the Workout part of the watch. The Galaxy Watch 5 doesn’t provide a very wide variety of activities by itself like HIIT that we get to see on Garmins. I used the watch while doing my weight training and the rep and the count was spot on. The watch counts each and every rep without missing a beat and also tells you the heart rate in realtime. This is surprising since you can see the heart rate increasing and decreasing in realtime while you lift a dumbbell. Quite impressive. This precision in tracking is carried forward to the step counter as well. The steps increase in realtime when you are walking or running. So if by the end of the day the watch reads a certain number of steps, they are precise. Along with the reps and step counter, the Galaxy Watch also shows you calorie count while you are working out. This gives you a realtime idea of the calories you are burning in a specific exercise. You can always look at this data in a compiled format on the watch or Samsung Galaxy health app on your device. <div type="image" title="Galaxy Health app shows detailed metric for your workouts" msid="94688227" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Galaxy Health app shows detailed metric for your workouts&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Overall, in terms of workouts, even with its limited amount of workout modes, the Galaxy Watch 5 fairs well. Yes, it might not be the best choice for someone who has a very specific use case and regimen. But if you are someone who works out just to stay fit and keep a track of your health then it can be a good choice for you. There is a Blood Oxygen saturation sensor onboard as well. The results of which are generally in line with the SpO2 medical device. Yet, I will not recommend using any smartwatch for a final verdict when it comes to Blood Oxygen level especially if you have a medical history. You also get a sleep tracker on the Galaxy Watch 5, which is in line with what the competition is offering. The sleep tracker uses SpO2 monitor in realtime to provide you more insight into your sleeping patterns. This involves assigning an avatar depending on your sleep. It also shows the time when you were in deep sleep or light sleep. The results here are in line with what I measure on my Apple Watch. However, my Apple Watch SE doesn’t have an SPO2 sensor. You also get a stress monitor on the smartwatch which doesn’t work in real time. But yes you can measure your stress on a tap. And if at all you are stressed it also recommends corrective measures like taking deep breaths. There is a BioActiv sensor on the smartwatch that tells our overall health by measuring your weight, BMI and skeletal muscle. While I personally won’t rely on it over a regular check up, it does act as a quality of life feature on the product. My assessment for both ECG and Blood pressure sensor remains the same. The GPS on the smartwatch is also precise and accurate. For my morning walks to the gym, it would show the time and distance without fail and with correct metrics. Now, the variant with me is in fact LTE, but I used the Bluetooth calling feature instead. The connectivity on the smartwatch is reliable. The call quality was satisfactory and the person on the receiving end could communicate with me without any hassle. So if you like taking phone calls from the wrist, the Galaxy Watch 5 will not disappoint you. Closing this section with perhaps the weakest quotient of the Galaxy Watch 5, it’s battery. The 410 mAh battery barely lasts for the day. I found myself charging the smartwatch every night before going to bed. This is another factor why you won’t really be tracking your sleep with the smartwatch. An average joe like me, wakes up in the morning and hits the gym, and then gets back to work. The only time when I am not wearing the watch is when I am bathing. Otherwise it is strapped on 24X7. Making the nights the most convenient time to charge it. Now, if you are an Apple Watch user, you won’t be surprised with these numbers. But if you are planning to shift from a Garmin, get ready to be disappointed. Charging speed is a positive though, with the watch supporting 10W fast charging. I used a 22.5W charger, and it took about 1 and a half hours to charge it fully. Verdict Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is a value proposition when we take cognisance of the price that it is offered at. You get a well thought out Samsung UI experience with the added benefits of Google Wear OS. The necessary sensors are all here, which mostly work well. The smartwatch also looks great on the wrist. However, it is not an ideal choice for a hardcore fitness enthusiast, given the limited number of workout modes and one day battery life. Also, skip it right away if you’re an iPhone user. Now onto a casual user, if you are planning to buy the Galaxy Watch 5, I would recommend going for the Bluetooth only variant over the LTE. It is more affordable and packs in all the features, and I feel most of us can do away with LTE since we carry phones with us all the time.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 review: Value champion in the Android smartwatch space

The Gear Fit, as the name implies, is a fitness-tracking device. But unlike its biggest competitors such as the Fitbit, Nike FuelBand and Jawbone Up, the Gear Fit comes with a twist. It has a brilliant curved touchscreen so the device can double as a smartwatch, delivering notifications from your smartphone to your wrist. It's a strikingly pretty device, and one of the most intriguing wearables I've seen so far. 
I've been testing the Gear Fit along with Samsung's new flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, for a little over a week. It's far from a perfect device, but I think it does point us in the right direction of what smartwatches could be like if they ever become as mainstream as smartphones.
The Gear Fit launches April 11 along with the Galaxy S5. It'll cost $199.
<h2 class="p1">How It Works</h2>
The Gear Fit connects to your phone using Bluetooth and a special app called the Gear Fit Manager, which you have to download separately from the Google Play store for Android apps. It'll only sync with Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets, so other Android phone users are out of luck. 
The device itself is a pill-shaped mini computer with a bright, eye-catching 1.84-inch color touchscreen. It pops into a rubbery band that comes in a variety of colors so you can customize it whenever you want. It's incredibly light - just 27 grams - and largely mimics the feel of other popular fitness-tracking bands.
After pairing the Gear Fit to your phone, you can use it to track your steps with a built-in pedometer, measure your heart rate, and display notifications like incoming calls, texts, emails and tweets from the apps installed on your smartphone. The health data syncs with Samsung's fitness app called S Health, which comes preinstalled on Galaxy phones and tablets. S Health helps you get a broad overview of your calories burned, average pulse, and other activities. You manage the other functions like incoming notifications and software updates using the Gear Fit Manager app on your phone.
Whenever you get a new notification, the Gear Fit displays the text on the screen. You can tap a button to launch the corresponding app on your phone, or delete the notification and view it later. For incoming calls and texts, you can use the Gear Fit Manager to preprogram a few common responses like "I can't talk now…I'm in a meeting" so you don't have to pull out your phone. But for everything else, you'll need your phone to respond to incoming notifications.

If you want to burn 500 calories during a run for example, the Gear Fit can tell you to run faster or slow down so you reach your goal.
The device is also water resistant, so you won't have to worry about breaking it if you sweat or get it a little wet when washing your hands.

<h2 class="p1">What It's Like</h2>
You can think of the Gear Fit as a stripped-down version of last year's Galaxy Gear smartwatch. (Samsung has a new version of the Galaxy Gear, the Gear 2, that will launch the same day as the Fit.) The Gear Fit is more focused, beautiful and functional than the regular Gear line, which seems to be packed with a lot of unnecessary extras like a camera, universal remote control, and third-party apps. Instead, the Gear Fit concentrates on what's important: monitoring your fitness and displaying the notifications from your phone. I think that's a much more logical solution for a wearable device.
The Gear Fit is also light and comfortable to wear thanks to its rubbery, flexible band and curved display that matches the contour of your wrist. It's more like a Fitbit or Nike FuelBand than the current generation of bulky smartwatches. With the Gear Fit, you won't look like a super geek wearing a wrist-computer from the future. The Gear Fit's design blends right in, yet still includes the added benefit of an attractive color display.
And don't let it turn you off that the Gear Fit can't do as much as its big brother the Gear 2. Wearable computing is still in its infancy, and we're seeing too may companies - Samsung included- trying to shrink the smartphone down to a wearable size. But all those features and apps get in the way. A good wearable should be there when you need it and then disappear. The Gear Fit comes very close to that experience.

It's bright, colorful and responds well to touch. You swipe left and right to navigate, and tap on icons to launch features like the heart rate monitor, pedometer and notification viewer. There are also a variety of different home screen watch faces and wallpapers to choose from, including a really handy one that shows you the current weather along with the time.
Even with that color display and small body, I was able to get really good battery life out of the Gear Fit: usually four days. I was very impressed that the Gear Fit was able to last so long, even with the power-sucking screen. The last thing anyone wants to do is charge their watch as often as their phone. 
<h2 class="p1">One Big Flaw</h2>
But all that beauty and focus doesn't necessarily translate well to this form factor. Because of the widescreen orientation, the Gear Fit is incredibly funky to use when you strap it on your wrist. When you look at it like a normal watch, the display is perpendicular to your vision, meaning you have to twist your head or arm around in order to read it. It's a frustrating experience. I found it best if I stuck my arm out and away from my body and looked at the screen from a distance, but that still wasn't ideal. If I'm going to wear a watch, I want to be able to read it as easily as one. The Gear Fit doesn't let me do that.
Samsung did add a software update late in my testing that lets you switch the interface to a vertical orientation instead. I only got to spend a few minutes with that version of the software, but it does feel much more natural. But because the screen is so narrow, text from notifications look squished to just a few characters per line so you'-re re-adi-ing som-e wor-ds lik-e thi-s. It's better, but still not perfect.

And to be clear, I think this is more of a software issue than a hardware issue. The design and technology are there, but Samsung hasn't figured out how to make the Gear Fit really sing.
<h2 class="p1">Conclusion</h2>
The common narrative in consumer gadgets these days is that wearable gizmos like the Gear Fit will be one of the next big computing platforms. But when you look at the current state of these devices, it's pretty clear there's a lot of work to do. No one has nailed it.
Still, the Gear Fit inches us closer. It's a beautiful representation of what the future of wearable computing might be like one day. But it's still missing some unknown element that makes me think it's a must-have companion for your smartphone. Getting notifications on your wrist is nice, but you still have to depend on your phone if you want to take action on most of them. That makes it difficult to justify spending another $199 on top of the $200+ you just spent on a Galaxy phone.
If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone and really want a smartwatch, the Gear Fit is your best choice. But most people should probably wait until something better comes along.
