<ul class="summary-list"><li>In the app's latest <keyword id="110679" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="skincare">skincare</keyword> trend, <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> users are applying large hydrocolloid bandages to their faces to shrink pimples overnight.</li><li><keyword id="4384089" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="dermatologists">Dermatologists</keyword> told Insider these patches are great for absorbing fluid from "red, angry pimples."</li><li>The patches can also stop people from picking their skin, or protect pimples that have been previously picked.</li><li>However, smaller pimple patches provide the same benefits without the risk of irritating unblemished skin.</li></ul>TikTokers have been known to try out <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-worst-tiktok-health-trends-of-2020-2020-12#people-have-tried-removing-moles-at-home-by-using-chemicals-peels-and-scraping-at-them-dermatologists-say-this-is-dangerous-5">questionable health and beauty trends</a>, from filing their teeth down to attempting to remove moles with at-home chemical peels.But the latest skincare hack popularized on the app - using hydrocolloid bandages to shrink pimples - has gotten some dermatologists' approvals.Videos show people placing extra-large Hydro Seal Band-Aids on their cheeks, chins, and foreheads. Most users leave the bandages on overnight, and many have filmed themselves peeling the saturated stickers off in the morning. Hydrocolloid bandages are designed to absorb fluid from wounds while creating a protective barrier, dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, told Insider. The patches can do the same thing for pimples, pulling out oil and pus until the bandage turns white with all it's absorbed. Garshick said these bandages shouldn't replace acne medications for preventing breakouts, but they can shrink nasty-looking blemishes in a pinch."These are not going to be your first line treatment for acne," Garshick said. "But if you're somebody who has the occasional pimple that comes up, you might use this to help in a time of desperation, or if you're going to have a big event and you just need something to go down quickly."<h2>Hydrocolloid patches work best for shrinking red, angry pimples</h2>Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told Insider that hydrocolloid bandages may not be suited for all kinds of acne. While they won't do much to blackheads or whiteheads, he said they're perfect for drawing out fluid from "red, angry pimples," or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pcos-acne-skin-care-products">cystic acne</a>.He added that the absorbent patches can also help heal pimples you've previously picked, as they were originally designed for wound care.For blackheads and whiteheads, Garshick recommended seeking out pimple stickers - smaller hydrocolloid patches specifically designed for acne - that contain an active ingredient such as salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores.Not all pimple stickers contain salicylic acid, she said. Some formulations are basically identical to hydrocolloid bandages, while others contain micro-darts for additional penetration.<h2>Whether you're using a bandage or a pimple sticker, avoid applying it to unaffected areas</h2>Even though hydrocolloid products are designed for healing, Garshick said the stickiness of these patches could irritate sensitive skin."If you're applying it to an area which includes unaffected skin, then it does run the risk of potentially irritating the skin, and certainly not being particularly effective," she said.The extra large bandages trending on TikTok are big enough to cover most of someone's cheek, which usually includes some unblemished skin around the breakout. Zeichner recommended cutting the bandages down to the size of the pimple you're looking to treat rather than using them whole.Pimple stickers come pre-sized for zits big and small, and they're often sold in multi-packs of various sizes. Some brands also offer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mighty-patch-invisible-plus-review">invisible" patches</a>, which are thinner, more transparent, and overall less conspicuous than the giant Band-Aids.<h2>Pimple patches also can help prevent skin picking and "<keyword id="9218521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="maskne">maskne</keyword>"</h2>Experts have previously recommended hydrocolloid bandages as a physical barrier to <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-stop-picking-your-pimples-according-to-experts-2020-8">picking at pimples</a>. For people who are prone to popping anything that resembles a blemish, the stickers not only shrink red spots but also prevent pickers from making their skin worse."Once we pop a pimple, we actually make it worse and it can lead to more scarring," Garshick said. "For individuals who really are very tempted to touch it, it's helpful to actually protect the skin that way."Garshick also said she's seen an increase in the popularity of pimple stickers during the pandemic, likely because people are experiencing mask-induced acne. Victoria has combination skin and dealt with some acne previously."I have very sensitive skin, so I'm always trying to pick products catered to that," Victoria told Insider. "I've been getting a lot of pesky chin acne lately; I suspect it's a result of all the mask-wearing and because I tend to fidget and touch my chin a lot while I'm working from home."Kaplan reviewed Victoria's routine start to finish and made some suggestions on which products to swap out and what products to keep. <h2>Victoria should consider swapping their face wash for one containing benzoyl peroxide</h2>Currently, Victoria's first step in the morning is to wash her face in the shower with Neutrogena's Creamy Cleanser. But she might want to swap their wash to something with benzoyl peroxide, according to Kaplan, Benzoyl peroxide is good for <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/benzoyl-peroxide-for-acne">killing acne bacteria under the skin</a> that causes acne and redness. "Assuming that their skin is not sensitive to benzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide is a very effective way of treating mild acne," Kaplan said. "I like the wash more than the creams because you can put it on and then basically rinse it off in the shower." Using a wash can be better than applying acne cream with benzoyl peroxide afterward because the cream can bleach clothes, Kaplan said.<h2>She should apply toner before moisturizing</h2>After they wash their face and pat it dry, Victoria moves on to moisturizing with Garnier SkinActive Clearly Brighter SPF 30 or Neutrogena SPF 35. While the products are good, Kaplan said Victoria should apply toner before this step. Toner can lift any remaining dirt and dead skin cells from the pores after cleansing. "I like using a non-alcohol based toner because if you're using acne products, one of the side effects of treating the acne is it could sometimes dry the skin," Kaplan said. "If you're using an alcohol-based toner that's going to further contribute to that.<h2>They should also consider washing their face consistently at night, especially after they work out </h2>Victoria said their nighttime skincare routine is a bit more inconsistent than their morning one, as sometimes they wash their face and other nights she doesn't. Kaplan said washing their face at night is important, especially because they work out which can build up sweat and dirt. <h2>Victoria should throw in a gentle exfoliator two or three times a week at night </h2>After they cleanse at night, Kaplan said Victoria should consider adding in a gentle exfoliator two to three times a week.Exfoliators can strip away dead skin cells and <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/beauty-skin-care/meaning-of-exfoliating">help with skin cell turn over</a> to prevent clogged pores. Kaplan recommends looking for an exfoliator that contains papaya enzymes, pineapple enzymes, ground date seed extracts, and jojoba particles."The pineapple and papaya extracts break down the dead cells and then the jojoba and date seed extracts will wipe it away," Kaplan said. <h2>If the maskne isn't getting better after trying over the counter benzoyl peroxide wash, they should go to a dermatologist </h2>If the maskne continues after they adjust their routine, Kaplan suggests they go to a dermatologist for more help. "I think that if the acne is not getting better and you've tried all the over the counter products you can, then maybe it's time to see a dermatologist, who specializes in skin, who can give you more effective treatments," Kaplan said. <h2>The verdict</h2>Overall, Kaplan said Victoria has all the right components to their routine. He only suggests they swap out some of their products for ones with organic extracts. "She's trying to keep it simple," Kaplan told Insider. "It's a solid, basic routine." It has these pigment-bursting beads that will supposedly match the pigment of your skin, so you know I'm calling in a couple friends to see if that's actually true.So here is what my skin is looking like today, I definitely have some redness and some breakouts that could use some coverage, so I'm going to be focusing the product there. I kind of want to test this out on my hand first, just to see what we're working with.I'm just wiping the back of my hand with a <keyword id="29496" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Makeup">makeup</keyword> wipe just to show you that there is pigment bursting happening. Whether or not this pigment will match my skin tone I am not so sure, but it's there. I feel like my most visible acne is on this side, so I'm just going to take a little bit, like, dot it on the areas where I need the most help, and then blend in a circular motion. This isn't, like, full-coverage, Tarte Shape Tape kind of concealing. I think it's just meant to tone down the discoloration, the redness, whatever you're trying to cover up.That actually doesn't look that bad. Why did it look so pink on the back of my hand, but on my face, it doesn't look too terrible? The texture of this does feel slightly grainy almost, and I think that's because of those "pigment-bursting beads." I do think that it's helping. OK.[laughs]I have to be specific because although it's not giving me as much coverage as I think I would have liked, I wasn't expecting this to be super full coverage, but I just think I expected a little bit more. It's not terrible. And it's honestly blending into my skin color way better than I was expecting it to.I feel like the concealer aspect of this is way better at covering darkness than it is redness. Fowler: So, I'm going to show you all my pimple. I got one just for this, literally. And then I have some other dark spots. It just looks like it's making my skin look a little bit more patchy right now. I don't think that it all looks like one cohesive color and it's completely, you know, adapting to what my skin looks like. It does kind of still show up as different colors. You can still see that it's not, it's not full coverage. It is just doing a little bit.I don't think that it is completely adapting to my skin color, so I wouldn't just wear it by itself. But as an under-makeup treatment for my acne, I would probably try it out.Nico: I've been wearing the blemish camouflage over the last few days just to see how it works as an actual acne treatment, and the results have been minimal, but pretty good.I was worried that I was going to start breaking out, because in my mind, this is more like a makeup product rather than an acne treatment, but I've definitely noticed some pimples shrinking when I use this as, like, an overnight mask. And it even helped fade some of my dark spots a little bit.And because this gives me a layer between my skin and my mask, I feel like I've noticed the maskne hasn't been as bad lately either. How to wear double mask correctly to protect against COVID-19

"The ingredients haven't been tested for longer contact with skin. The strip could be harder to remove and might leave the skin irritated," Waldorf told Insider via email."How often are you just wearing the mask for 10-15 minutes? And if you put the pore strip on and then your mask and go out and about with both on, then the pore strip will stay on as long as the mask," she added.Waldorf also told Insider that she typically recommends people use "a topical retinoid" instead of pore strips, adding that with the former "the contents of pores are swept away naturally over time."
