Following news of hanging up her gloves earlier, six-time world champion and 2012 Olympic medallist Mangte Chungneijang <keyword id="20322846" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mary-kom" source="keywords">Mary Kom</keyword> shot down suggestions that she had announced her retirement from boxing on Thursday. In a statement, the legendary boxer said that she would personally come in front of the media when she retires. "Dear Friends from the media, I haven't announced my retirement yet and I have been misquoted. I will personally come in front of the media whenever I want to announce it," Mary Kom said in a statement. News about the 6-time world champion's retirement started doing the rounds after she stated at a school event in <keyword id="223487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dibrugarh" source="Orion">Dibrugarh</keyword> on Wednesday that the age limit in the Olympics doesn't allow her to participate The 41-year-old cleared all the doubts and added that she was at a school event in Dibrugarh on Wednesday, where the boxer was "motivating children." "I have gone through some media reports stating that I have announced retirement and this is not true. I was attending a school event in Dibrugarh on January 24, 2024 wherein I was motivating children," said Kom. "I still have a hunger to achieve in sports but the age limit in the Olympics doesn't allow me to participate, though I can carry on with my sport. I am still focusing on my fitness and whenever I announce my retirement, I will inform everyone," her statement added. Mary is the first female boxer in boxing history to have captured six world titles. The five-time Asian champion was the first female boxer from India to take home a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games. The experienced pugilist won a bronze medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games, leaving any record or title untouched. She introduced herself to the world at the age of 18 at the inaugural world meet in Scranton, Pennsylvania. With her near-flawless boxing style, she impressed everyone and made it to the final of the 48kg category. She fell short in the final but left a mark on the success that she was going to achieve in the future. In the coming years, she went on to become the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She went on to clinch the World Championship titles in 2005, 2006, 2008 and the 2010 editions. After winning the 2008 title, Mary went on a break after giving birth to her twins. After winning the 2012 Olympic medal, Mary once again went on a break after giving birth to her third child. She marked her return but sealed her place at the summit of the 2018 World Championships, which was held in Delhi. She dominated with a 5-0 win over Ukraine's Hanna Okhota for her sixth world title. A year later, she went on to clinch her eighth world medal, the most by any male or female boxer.

I haven't announced retirement: Mary Kom

Who says a movie is just a movie? Nowadays, every movie seems to raise the hackles of some group or individual or the other. 
 <keyword id="6359754" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manipur">Manipur</keyword> refuses to relax the 15-year ban on Hindi movies and the Hindi language imposed by the Revolutionary Peoples Front in 2000 and will not relent even for the biopic on famous Olympic medallist <keyword id="47387" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mary-Kom">Mary Kom</keyword>, a Manipuri. 
 
One would expect Manipur would be proud to celebrate the success of its boxer Mary Kom, whose story is an example of how an individual, more so a woman, can overcome all odds and triumph in a male bastion such as boxing. 
 
Where she should have been held up as an example of grit, determination and women empowerment for the whole country and more so for Manipur, her biopic is being derided for apparently what one can only call ‘ridiculously silly reasons.’ 
 Objections have been raised on the fact that a non Manipuri acts as Mary Kom. Actor <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword> essaying Mary Kom’s role in the biopic obviously does not have the same physical features of Mary Kom. A flat nose and the epicanthic folds over the eyelids are the defined genetic features of the real Mary Kom. How far can Priyanka duplicate them with prosthetics? Her taller and, of course, desirable figure is also being objected to. 
 
Why not a Manipuri actor, is the question being raised. They assert there is plenty of talent and Manipuri cinema is active with several national award winners in its fold. Other reasons for the protests include the statement that the story should be more important and a star is not really needed to sell the movie. 
 
Of course, as usual in India, everything will have a racist angle. Manipuris accuse their fellow countrymen of racism, bigotry and insensitiveness. It is high time we do away with “statism” and think as a country. The objectors perhaps have forgotten that the picture is slated for national viewing. 
 Producer <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword>, who had always stuck to his guns despite several colossal flops at the box office and maintained that the story and artistic reality was important in his films, is being accused of a volte face in this case. 
 
However, having enjoyed a stupendous box office success with his recent movie, he would naturally want to ensure the commercial success of his next venture. Kudos to him for undertaking a biopic of the travails and success of a woman boxer - something which the majority of Indians may not view as their cup of tea. How many of us are interested in boxing? 
 
Entertainment is not just making a movie, it has to be marketed. You create interest through the story and if it is offbeat, rope in recognised stars to create audience interest in seeing them in a different light. 
 
This is what Bhansali did when he signed up Priyanka Chopra - a star in her own right - a versatile and accomplished actress. Chopra, to her credit, went the extra mile to bring as much authenticity to her portrayal as possible. 
 
Let us not forget movies are big money businesses, the producer and the director have to work to ensure its financial success and artistic acclaim. 
 
Last but not the least, why did Manipur not make a biopic of its illustrious daughter? 
 
Mary Kom has been, of course, striving to see if the ban can be lifted. It is hoped better sense will prevail and the authorities and political organisations will relax the Hindi movie ban at least for the Mary Kom biopic. The feisty and wonderful lady deserves better. Why not let the picture have the last word?

Manipur Says No To The Mary

New Delhi, Jul 13 () A doctor attached with the Indian boxing team on Monday tested positive for COVID-19 even as all the pugilists who have assembled for training in Patiala came out negative but stared at a possible suspension of the proposed camp due to the development. The 11 boxers, including Asian Games champion and world silver-medallist Amit Panghal, will be retested as they were at the same quarantine facility with the doctor. "Dr Amol (Patil) was in quarantine in a centre outside the main campus of national Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala. As per protocol, before he is allowed to enter main hostel and sports arena, he was given the COVID test on the 7th day (of quarantine) and tested positive," the Sports Authority of India said in a statement to when asked about the development. "He has been shifted to the state-run COVID centre. Those who are identified as primary contact will be tested tomorrow. The quarantine period for all persons staying in the same quarantine facility has been extended by one week. The centre has been sterilised as per protocol," it added. The boxers have, however, tested negative but will undergo a second round of testing on Tuesday. "Dr Patil is completely asymptomatic, not even mild symptoms are there. He will recover soon enough," said a source close to the team. Patil has been a regular in Indian boxing and travelled with the team to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the world championships last year. The pugilists were due to start training later this month or early in August after the Boxing Federation of India got the SAI nod to conduct the national camp amid the pandemic. The conduct of the camp is currently being overseen by SAI after the Delhi High Court stayed the sports ministry's recognition to 57 national federations including the BFI. Nine Indian boxers have qualified for the Olympics, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. They are -- Amit Panghal (52kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg), MC Mary Kom (51kg), Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), and Pooja Rani (75kg). Of these, Mary Kom continues to train at her home in Delhi as attending the camp was optional. As per the SAI's safety protocols for training, boxers have been barred from doing human sparring, told not to access the ring and use their personal equipment for all forms of training. They were to be offered cover for COVID-19 in their medical insurance, as per the SOP made by the BFI. The boxers and the federation also have to sign consent forms acknowledging the risk of resumption before being allowed back at the SAI centre. PM AH

The movie revolves around the terrorist attacks and Ajmal Kasab, the prime radical, who was caught. RGV relies on police statements, eyewitnesses and the court evidence to bring in a pretty close presentation of reality. 
 
3. Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara 
A sequel to 2010’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, the movie is inspired by the animosity between gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan. Despite a lot of hype, this gangster saga turned out to be a flop. Akshay Kumar, <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> and Sonakshi Sinha played lead roles in the film. 
 
4. The Dirty Picture 
Starring Vidya Balan, this one is a biopic of the southern sex siren, Silk Smitha, and offers a heavy dose of entertainment. Vidya has done an admirable job here and played a perfect seductress. She did her best to get into the skin of the character, which also required her to put on oodles of flab. 
 
5. Special 26 Starring Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, this film was inspired by a real life incident that took place in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar in 1987. In the movie, a group on conmen posing as CBI officers executes a daylight income tax raid. The film also stars <keyword id="7637" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Manoj-Bajpayee">Manoj Bajpayee</keyword> and Jimmy Shergill, and has won plenty of critical acclaim. 
 
6. Paan Singh Tomar 
Another gem of a movie starring Irrfan Khan. This is a biopic of an athlete, Paan Singh Tomar, who was employed with the Indian Armed Forces. The film weaves the real life incidents that forced Paan Singh to quit the defence services and his dream of becoming an internationally acclaimed athlete, and take to guns instead. 
 
7. Satyagraha – Democracy Under Fire A political thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor, this flick is loosely based on <keyword id="57766" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Anna-Hazare">Anna Hazare</keyword>’s fight against corruption. While Big B plays the role of Anna, Kareena’s character is inspired by the international journalist, Christian Amanpour. 
 
8. No One Killed Jessica This political crime thriller is a screen adaptation of the much publicised <keyword id="14009" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jessica-Lal">Jessica Lal</keyword> murder case. While Vidya Balan plays Jessica’s elder sister, Rani Mukherjee is the spunky news reporter. The film has been widely appreciated for making the point quite poignantly and has bagged many prestigious awards. 
 
9. Not a Love Story 
This film starring Mahie Gill and Deepak Dobriyal is based on the ghastly murder of Neeraj Grover that led to the arrest of Maria Susairaj and M.L. Jerome. Director Ram Gopal Varma shot the movie in just 20 days at Dheeraj Solitaire building, which is the prime location of the incident. 
 
10. Guru 
It has not been stated officially but Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, takes inspiration from the life and times of India’s celebrated business tycoon, <keyword id="6418409" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Dhirubhai-Ambani">Dhirubhai Ambani</keyword>.
