<ul class="summary-list"><li>A Massachusetts woman was found dead in her truck and <keyword id="11894211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="police" source="Orion">police</keyword> have killed the suspect.</li><li><keyword id="14511224" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mary-anderson" source="Orion">Mary Anderson</keyword> was reported missing Sunday and her body was found Tuesday in Vermont.</li></ul><p>Mary Anderson, of Harvard, Massachusetts, was found dead in her truck Tuesday and the man wanted for questioning in her death was shot and killed by police a day later.</p><p>Vermont State Police say Anderson's ex-fiance Matthew Davis was wanted for questioning in Anderson's death and armed with a knife when he was killed.</p><p>"I cannot fathom what has unfolded these last few days. I am so lost and confused and mad," Ali Giannino, a friend of Anderson's, posted to Facebook. "Yes Matthew Davis has been shot and killed by police, but for me, honestly, this is not justice. There are so many unanswered questions I have."</p><p>Giannino <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/07/20/metro/new-details-emerge-fatal-shooting-former-boyfriend-brattleboro-who-was-wanted-questioning-death-harvard-woman/?s_campaign=breakingnews:newsletter">told The Boston Globe</a> on Wednesday that Anderson had ended her relationship with Davis months ago and he was not taking the break-up well, but the 23-year-old's friends never thought he was capable of killing her. </p><div type="image" title="Ali Giannino and Mary Anderson" height="714" width="953" msid="93015080" hostid="261" sizebytes="22686"></div><h2>A missing license plate </h2><p>Anderson was last seen alive in Hudson, New Hampshire, on Saturday, according to Vermont State Police.</p><p>On Sunday night, she was reported missing to the local police department, and on Tuesday her body was found in her truck in Brattleboro. </p><p>Giannino described herself to the Globe and on social media as like family to Anderson. </p><p>Starting on Sunday, Giannino began sharing photos of Anderson and Davis online asking for anyone who may know of their whereabouts to call the police. She wrote that Anderson had been "kidnapped" and a "Choose Life" license plate was removed from a family member's car.</p><p>When Anderson was found, she posted links to a memorial fund in her name.</p><p>"She was a beautiful soul, inside and out," Giannino told the Globe."She didn't deserve this."</p><p>When reached by Insider, Giannino said she would like to speak about Anderson, but needed time. </p><p><a href="https://vtstatepolice.blogspot.com/2022/07/update-no-4-vermont-state-police.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter">Vermont State Police said</a> Davis was killed in a wooded area in Brattleboro, Vermont, after a detective doing a neighborhood canvas recognized him as the person wanted for interest in Anderson's disappearance.</p><p>Troopers and Brattleboro police fired their weapons, according to the statement. </p><div type="image" title="A stock image of yellow police tape saying: &quot;police line do not cross&quot; against a dark background and white headlights" height="1333" width="2000" msid="93015081" hostid="261" sizebytes="48176"></div><h2>A history of violence</h2><p>The 34-year-old Fitchburg, Massachusetts, man had a history of lashing out when rejected.</p><p>In 2009, Davis was arrested after he snuck into the home of his ex-girlfriend — the father of his three children — and waited there overnight until she arrived with her new boyfriend, according to reporting in <a href="https://www.berkshireeagle.com/news/local/pittsfield-stab-suspect-ordered-held-without-bail/article_01d223ba-ff56-5b58-86f4-371d49193d3f.html">the Berkshire Eagle. </a>Davis then stabbed the man, seriously injuring him, according to the Eagle.</p><p>The woman, who Insider is not naming, told the court at the time that Davis didn't like her dating other men, even though they weren't together.</p><p>Dale Eason, who was a Pittsfield Police Detective at the time, testified in court that Davis was affiliated with an unnamed gang.</p><p>Davis pleaded guilty to charges related to the attack, which included assault with intent to kill, and was sentenced to four to nine years in prison, according to court records obtained by The Globe. He was released on parole in 2015, and completed it two years later, according to The Globe.</p><p><a href="https://nicic.gov/projects/correctional-responses-domestic-violence-victims">According to the Justice Department,</a> nearly, 15% of women and 4% of men in the US have been injured as a result of <keyword id="13670138" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="intimate-partner-violence" source="Orion">intimate partner violence</keyword>, including rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.</p><p>Women between 18 and 34 have generally experienced the highest rates of intimate partner violence, according to the DOJ.</p>

Beyond selling outdoor gear, it's leaning into the long-untapped potential of rental and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rei-used-gear-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used gear</a>; leading outdoor itineraries around the world through its travel company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rei-adventures-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">REI Adventures</a>; figuring out how to operate its business more sustainably; and advocating for the preservation of our planet through multiple stewardship projects. The diverse combination of strategies is clearly working and shows retailers they can truly do it all. </p><p>But none of these ventures would be possible today if ice axes weren't so difficult to buy in 1935. </p><h2>Austrian ice axes, 21 of your closest friends, and a $1 membership fee - or, how to start an outdoors co-op</h2><p>Lloyd and Mary Anderson loved adventuring outside, but in 1935, the means of obtaining quality gear was less than optimal. The best ice axes came from Austria, but they often had to rely on ski shops that overcharged for Austrian goods or sold sub-par, imitation products.</p><p>With the help of Mary's German skills, they decided to skip the middleman and they began ordering ice axes directly from Austria. Lifetime membership cost $1. </p><p>REI stores now, with their rows of offerings and mock camp set-ups, feel a universe away from the REI of early days, when members shopped a singular shelf of products tucked into a local grocery store and the Anderson's attic served as the storage space. The simple spirit of convenient access to a life lived outdoors, however, has manifested itself in many different ways throughout REI's 81-year-old history. </p><h2>How REI's membership model works today, and why it resonates so strongly</h2><p>Sadly, you won't be able to get an REI membership for only $1 anymore, but it's still pretty affordable at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rei-lifetime-membership-program-explainer-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$20 for a lifetime of various benefits</a>. If you spend at least $10 a year at REI, you'll get a share of it back (usually 10%) every March. Members also enjoy special pricing on classes, events, rentals, and REI Adventures trips, as well as access to exclusive events. </p><p>As a member, you have a direct stake in the future of the company. Each active member has one vote during REI Board elections and can submit an item of business for consideration at the board's annual meeting. </p><p>With all these perks, it's no wonder that REI's membership is growing rapidly. More than the financial and stakeholder benefits is the unquantifiable feeling of belonging to a community of like-minded people and a company that is mission-driven rather than profit-driven.</p><p>In 2008, REI had 3.7 million members. Examples of projects that these organizations complete include improving underused urban parks and building new trails. Sally Jewell, CEO of REI from 2005 to 2013, served as the US Secretary of the Interior under former President Barack Obama. Her time in each role shared themes of increasing conservation efforts, access to parks, and renewable energy practices. </p><p><strong>Closing the accessibility gap in the outdoors. </strong>While outdoor gear brands often wax poetic about an outdoor world that everyone can enjoy, the reality is that women and minorities are still underserved and underrepresented in the outdoors space. Seven of its facilities are <a href="https://new.usgbc.org/leed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LEED-certified</a>. </p><p>REI implemented a goal of achieving zero-waste operations (which it defines as diverting at least 90% of waste from landfills) by 2020, but said it will be unable to meet that goal in every single store.
