Marvel Launches Anthem in India to Market Endgame

It's a brand-new franchise with ongoing support from BioWare, the celebrated creators of the "Mass Effect" series. "Anthem's" most important hook, the mechanized "javelins" that let players fly and explore the game's massive open world, are awesome in design and amazing to see in motion.</p><p>And yet, I'm not sure if all of that makes "Anthem" a fun game. While I've mostly enjoyed the 10 hours I've spent with Anthem so far, I couldn't fight the feeling that parts of the new third-person shooter felt more like work than play.</p><p>"Anthem" successfully executes BioWare's vision of an open-world third-person shooter, but the game's exciting concept feels bogged down by stale mechanics and poor optimization. With any luck, it will be improved over time as BioWare updates the game.</p><p>The game celebrated its official launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Friday, but I've been playing the full version of "Anthem" with players who pre-ordered on PC since February 15th. Here's what it's like. </p>

'Anthem' is the definition of a blockbuster video game, but that doesn't make it fun

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched the fifth episode of "Marvel's Luke Cage."</strong></p><p>"Marvel's Luke Cage" is giving one song&#xa0;a huge lift.</p><p>Jidenna's empowering rap song "Long Live the Chief" has experienced a more than 2,000% jump in streaming on Spotify compared to just a week ago.</p><p>The song is featured on the Netflix show's soundtrack and appears during its&#xa0;fifth episode, titled "Just to Get a Rep."</p><p>Jidenna himself performs the anthemic rap song while the show's nightclub, Harlem's Paradise, is empty. But a dozen different Epic Games employees <a href="https://www.polygon.com/2019/4/23/18507750/fortnite-work-crunch-epic-games">speaking with Polygon</a> describe a culture of extreme working conditions that seemingly never end.</p><p>"I hardly sleep. I'm grumpy at home. I have no energy to go out. Getting a weekend away from work is a major achievement," one employee speaking anonymously said.</p><p>"I work an average 70 hours a week. There's probably at least 50 or even 100 other people at Epic working those hours. I know people who pull 100-hour weeks," another employee said anonymously. "The company gives us unlimited time off, but it's almost impossible to take the time. If I take time off, the workload falls on other people, and no one wants to be that guy."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Marvel/Epic Games</span></p><p class="caption">An upcoming "Fortnite" tie-in with "The Avengers: Endgame" is currently being teased for later this week.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Epic Games acknowledged the problems in various statements provided to Polygon.</p><p>"People are working very hard on 'Fortnite' and other Epic efforts," a representative told Polygon. "Extreme situations such as 100-hour work weeks are incredibly rare, and in those instances, we seek to immediately remedy them to avoid recurrence."</p><p>An Epic representative told Business Insider that salaries and benefits at the company "are highly competitive, and all employees participate in a generous profit sharing program." </p><p>But employees speaking to Polygon said that wasn't enough incentive to keep up the grueling pace of work. </p><p>"I've had friends come to me and say, 'I can't take this anymore.' I've had friends break down in tears. The crunch is constant," one employee said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BioWare/EA</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The working conditions described in the piece, sadly, are nothing new for the world of video game development. </p><p>Most recently, the EA game "Anthem" - which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthem-what-went-wrong-2019-3">crashed and burned soon after launch</a> - was <a href="https://kotaku.com/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964">the subject of a Kotaku investigation</a> detailing its messy development.</p><p>Employees working on "Anthem" reportedly endured enough stress that they began taking "stress leave" to cope. The creator of 'Fortnite' reportedly has a brutal work culture where some employees have 100-hour work weeks: 'I hardly sleep. I'm grumpy at home. I have no energy to go out.'

Even if it means sacrificing everything".</span></strong></li><li>Servicemen and Gold Star families say that the "sacrifice"&#xa0;<strong>Kaepernick represents is not comparable to that experienced by military families.</strong></li><li><strong>The widow of decorated sniper Chris Kyle attacked the ad campaign, as well as others with military links.</strong></li><li><strong>The reaction has not been uniform. Other military personnel and their families have voiced support for Kaepernick.</strong></li></ul><p>Some US military families and veterans are attacking the Colin Kaepernick Nike ad which came out on Monday on the grounds that it does not depict true sacrifice - an issue dividing the military community.</p><p><span>The caption on the ad said "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything," a reference to the damage to&#xa0;Kaepernick's NFL career after he became embroiled in controversy for not standing for the national anthem.</span></p><p><span>Some interpreted his actions during the anthem as a snub to the military, which Kaepernick has denied. Nonetheless, it has caused many servicemen and women to voice an opinion on his actions, brought to prominence again by the ad.</span></p><p>Figures to speak out include a serving special forces sergeant, the widow of decorated sniper Chris Kyle, and the mother of a marine who died in a helicopter crash at the age of 21.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span>Kaepernick hasn't played in more than a year, and is suing the NFL, which he says colluded to keep him off the field, harming his career.</span></p><p>The criticism from some military personnel is that the "sacrifice" embodied by&#xa0;Kaepernick bears little resemblance to the sacrifice of soldiers who die carrying out their duties.</p><p>Other people with military backgrounds have taken a different view, and voiced support for Kaepernick in open letters and on social media.</p><p><span>Tim Kennedy, a Green Beret sergeant and former UFC fighter, was a critic. He posted a video from his army base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, saying: "</span><span>I'm in a room of a bunch of heroes who in a heartbeat would die for Colin's right to do what he's doing. That's sacrifice. Not talking about giving away something."</span></p><p><span>Some on social media have suggested that Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who quit to join the army and died in Afghanistan, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-colin-kaepernick-ad-brings-pat-tillman-into-spotlight-2018-9">would have been a better candidate for the ad</a>.</span></p><p><span>Taya Kyle, an author and the widow of Chris Kyle, posted an open letter to Nike on her Facebook page.</span></p><p><span>She said: "Your new ad with Colin Kaepernick, that sacrificing everything thing…It just doesn't play out here. Sacrificing what exactly? A career?"</span></p><p>Trina Hart, whose son Lance Corporal Ty Hart died in a helicopter crash over Hawaii at the age of 21, also posted an open letter criticising Nike.</p><p><span>In it she says:&#xa0;</span>"Sit down and talk to any Gold Star family and you will find out that SACRIFICE isn't about a career, football, cars or money."</p><p>Gold Star is a term used to describe a family who has lost a child in active service.</p><p>She went on: "It's about that empty seat at our table, it's about never being handed a grandchild from our son, it's about not getting to see him come up the walk, it's about never feeling his hug again or hearing his voice. I could go on and on Nike. Why? Because we SACRIFICED it all."</p><p><span>"To use the word SACRIFICE in the way you just did is in poor taste. It offends so many."</span></p><p><span>She added a photo of her son's grave in the post.</span></p><p><span>More measured criticism came from Nate Boyer, a former NFL player who helped Kaepernick decide to kneel during the anthem, rather than sit down, on the grounds that it would be more respectful. </span></p><p><span>Boyer said the ad didn't depict what he understood to be sacrifice.</span></p><p><span><a href="https://abc7news.com/sports/bay-area-army-veteran-who-encouraged-kap-to-take-a-knee-addresses-new-nike-ad/4149208/">He told ABC 7 News in Los Angeles:</a> "The ultimate sacrifice that we talk about often, with respect to people who have lost their lives fighting for the very things that the flag and the anthem are supposed to represent."</span></p><p>The reaction has not been uniform, however. Some military personnel and their families have been vocal in their support of Kaepernick and Nike.</p><p>Lily Burana, a journalist who is married to a US Army veteran, <a href="https://www.salon.com/2018/09/05/dont-speak-for-my-military-family-a-veterans-wife-on-colin-kaepernick-and-the-nike-boycott/">wrote a story for Salon.com</a>&#xa0;entitled "Don't speak for my military family: A veteran's wife on Colin Kaepernick and the Nike boycott."</p><p>She said: "When you protest Kaepernick's protest, even in the name of "supporting the troops," you are refuting everything my husband fought for: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the peaceful pursuit of justice."</p><p>The hashtag&#xa0;#veteransforKaepernick, which first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/veterans-support-colin-kaepernick-2016-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">began trending in 2016 when the kneeling controversy began</a>, was resurrected after the Nike ad came to light.</p><p>Pam Keith, a US Navy veteran running for office in Florida, was among those to tweet.</p><p>Others also joined in.</p><p>Despite generating a lot of news coverage, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nike-stock-price-colin-kaepernick-just-do-it-ads-2018-9">Nike shares fell around 2% after the ad came out</a>, and have remained down.</p><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/publishers-clearing-house-1-billion-company-sweepstakes-lawsuit-data-digital-direct-mail-2018-8">How Publishers Clearing House makes $1 billion a year</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>

Some military families are attacking the Colin Kaepernick Nike ad because it doesn't show real 'sacrifice', though others disagree

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screen via YouTube/Led Zeppelin</span></p><p class="caption">When they were young.</p></div><p></p></div></div>I call it the "Led Zeppelin" problem. </p><p>Many fans, both aging and youthful, sort of learned the band in reverse. They started, often enough, with the fourth album, which has as its centerpiece "Stairway to Heaven" and represents the culmination of the first phase of the band's epic output, starting with 1969's "Led Zeppelin I" and continuing through the next two records before "Led Zeppelin IV" in 1971.</p><p>Four more albums followed: "Houses of the Holy"; "Physical Graffiti"; "Presence"; and "In Through the Out Door." Then there was "Coda," released after drummer John Bonham's death in 1980, after the Mighty Zep had called it quits.</p><p>But because "Stairway" was played constantly on FM radio for the 1970s, '80s, '90s, '00s, and '10s, Zep IV is the gateway drug. This is fine - IV is a masterpiece, a full representation of guitarist, founder, and producer Jimmy Page's desire to create a group that could alchemically combine the four elements of each member and synthesize a magical, musical fifth. </p><p>However, you don't see the true arc of what Page, Bonham, singer Robert Plant, and bassist John Paul Jones were up to.</p><p>Unlike his legendary contemporaries - Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, both members of the sixties British blues-rock band the Yardbirds - Page, also a Yardbird, hasn't been performing much in the past two decades. This has been disappointing to many fans, but Page seemed to favor a shift toward a curatorial role, digging through Zeppelin's extensive backlog of recordings to come up with a definitive sonic legacy for the band. </p><p>Page oversaw the remastering of the entire Zep catalog and the re-issue of chunky new vinyl and CD packages, collectively called the Deluxe Edition. I thought he was calling it a wrap after "Coda," but there was a little something extra special that landed this year.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot via Amazon</span></p><p class="caption">The five-LP vinyl set.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's the "Complete BBC Sessions," and it's a Deluxe Edition of recordings that were originally compiled in 2007. Zep was a fantastic, although at times uneven, live group, but there aren't that many collections of the live work. Really, there are three: "The Song Remains the Same," which came out in 1976 and is the soundtrack to the band's concert film of the same name; "Celebration Day," Zep's 2007 re-union concert, released in 2012; and the BBC recordings.</p><p>Zeppelin's mythology effectively began with Zep IV and unfortunately has tended to distance fans who weren't around for the chronological release of the first four records from the band's innovative melding of hard Chicago blues with heavy folk and a certain amount of classical music (Page's famous "Stairway to Heaven" solo is the high point of Zep's classical compositional period, a work of near-absolute precision from a guitarist better know for taking lots of wild chances in his playing).</p><p>At base, Zeppelin played a particularly ferocious version of the blues - the electrified blues. Page's focus was on the Chicago sound, which could be a bit raggedy and was harshly amplified; the so-called acoustic "country blues" of the Mississippi Delta interested him less. </p><p>Over time, Plant, Bonham, and Jones would exert their own individual influences over the group - Plant especially, given that he became the main lyricist. But the BBC sessions are an absolute feast of Zeppelin offering its own take in the Chicago blues idea. </p><p>That take was, to be perfectly honest, borderline unhinged. This was what initially grabbed people about Zep - nobody had ever heard anything quite so thunderingly raw before, even from Jimi Hendrix or Cream, the latter being the group that Clapton formed with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce to explore his own heavier rock concepts. </p><p>For starters, Page, Plant, Bonham, and even the more reserved Jones liked their rock and blues <em>loud.</em> Take a version of "Communication Breakdown" from a June 1969 session, a song often credited with introducing the ferociously propulsive and choppy sound of proto-punk bands such as the Ramones. This Zep version sounds like a large buzz saw being put to the task of dismembering a rusted battle cruiser. The pure energy of the thing is breathtaking.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNVRIPgfRNE">YouTube/Jean Bonini</a></span></p><p class="caption">Plant, Page, Bonham, and Jones.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Or how about a version of "Whole Lotta Love," also from June '69? The most famous opening riff in rock genuinely sounds here the way I think Page wanted it to sound, very big yet also scratchy and flattened. The "freak out" section is hallucinogenic, a showcase for Plant's exotic yowlings and Bonham's thumpy, malevolent fills, which have an almost jazz flavor. </p><p>By the time 1971 rolls around, Zep is steaming under full power. A January version of "Immigrant Song" is spectacularly rude kick in the head - Plant's confidence has grown by monumental leaps since the late 1960s and the band has become tight. The rough edges have been smoothed, but the collective power level has been taken to a transcendent place, so the overall effect is profound. </p><p>The '71 session, recorded at the Paris Theater, is in fact the culmination of Page's theory that Zep should be a band capable of delivering "light and shade": the raucous noise is abundant, but so is the sweetly delicate acoustic-based work, and the early performance of "Stairway" is a revelation.</p><p>The solo is much looser, with a creamy, lightly overdriven quality that suggests Page was still working out the exact tonality of it when played live. Bonham's and Jones's rhythm work is also gestational, but Plant's ownership of the vocal is supreme. The whole thing is the antidote to having heard the studio version a million times on the radio over the past four-and-half decades.</p><p>A highlight of the musicianship of the members is an anthemic version of "Thank You," with Page adopting a weary, lilting timbre, Jones supplying supple organ fills, Bonham offering some juicy runs, and Page serving up a solo that could cut glass.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">The album cover.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The real treat is a a number called "Sunshine Woman," which wasn't on the initial 1997 release of these recordings. It's a grungy little rock-n-roll scrapper from 1969 that serves as a useful reminder that <em>before </em>Led Zeppelin was LED ZEPPELIN, it was four young guys hacking it out in what amounted to a British garage. It's low-fi Led Zep, thick with texture and the band members playing off each other.</p><p>They don't sound <em>great</em> yet. But they sound <em>unforgettable. </em>Zep has inspired countless groups over the decade - the best example these days is the California quartet Rival Sons - but they tend to follow from the fully evolved Zep approach. <p class="drop-cap">It's hard to believe that a song about a corrupt superhero who was murdered from the inside out via an "ass bomb" would get nominated for an Emmy, but that's par for the course for Amazon Prime Video's diabolical drama series "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-boys">The Boys</a>."</p><p>Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic-book series of the same name, and executive produced by <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/seth-rogen">Seth Rogen</a> and Evan Goldberg, "<keyword id="11916582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-boys" source="Orion">The Boys</keyword>" is a fresh take on the superhero genre that garnered critical acclaim after its premiere in July 2019. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-season-2-details-references-2020-9">Season two</a>, released in September 2020, doubled down on the show's unapologetic look at a world in which superheroes, known as supes, are owned by a nefarious corporation called Vought International.</p><p>But before finding a way to top season one's famous dolphin scene - due to <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-amazon-season-2-fun-facts-behind-the-scenes-details">another gory sea creature casualty</a> - the season two premiere opened with <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-erin-moriarty-starlight-suit-challenges-season-two-interview-2020-10">Starlight/Annie January</a> (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/erin-moriarty">Erin Moriarty</a>) being forced to deliver an award-worthy performance at the funeral for the aforementioned supe, Translucent (Alex Hassell).  </p><p>"The Boys" composer Christopher Lennertz received very clear directions from showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke before he wrote the song: "He said, 'I need you to write me an Adele-meets-Celine-Dion-meets-Whitney showstopper, over-the-top power ballad," he recalled. </p><p>The result was "Never Truly Vanish," an unabashedly grandiose song that's equal parts heartfelt and ludicrous in its delivery by Moriarty (yes, that <em>is</em> actually her singing the track).</p><p>Writer and co-executive producer Michael Saltzman said that's what made the song and accompanying visuals so hilarious - it's the conjunction of how "ridiculous" the production was paired with "the absolute conviction and sincerity with which they're doing the song."</p><p>"And the writing of the song had to be approached the same way, it's gotta be a legit, authentic song that would be in this situation," Saltzman added.</p><p>Ahead of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/emmys-2021">73rd Primetime Emmys</a> next month, Lennertz and Saltzman spoke to <a href="https://www.insider.com/">Insider</a> about how Starlight's anthem came together and landed the "The Boys" a <a href="https://www.insider.com/emmys-nominees-winners-list-2021-7">nomination</a> for outstanding original music and lyrics.</p><div type="image" title="Erin Moriarty performing as Starlight on season two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1184" width="1578" msid="85514232" hostid="261"></div><p class="drop-cap">The idea for Starlight's musical moment started in the writers' room while mapping out season two.</p><p>Although the show's head writer, Kripke penned the episode, "The Big Ride," Saltzman described the process as "a real group effort" in which all the writers pitched story ideas and contributed to the outlines.</p><p>Saltzman, who joined the show in its second season after one of his scripts caught Kripke's attention, "dabbled" in songwriting throughout his three decades working in <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv" source="Orion">TV</keyword>. As a fan of the comic-book genre and musicals, the former "Murphy Brown" showrunner was eager to try his hand at writing lyrics for Starlight to sing at Translucent's funeral. </p><p>"I volunteered to Eric and I said, 'I love writing song lyrics and I have a real take on this if you'd let me do it,'" Saltzman recalled. "He said, 'Yeah, knock yourself out.'"</p><p>Saltzman's goal was to write the lyrics "with a degree of sincerity and authenticity." </p><p>"You can't be making fun of the thing you're doing while you're doing it," he said. "You have to write it as if it's a legit version of the song that Celine Dion is going to sing at the 'In Memoriam' segment at the Oscars. It had to have that kind of gravitas to it."</p><p>One phrase from the writers' room served as the crux for his lyrics: "You'll never truly vanish from our hearts." The phrase was a play on Translucent's power of invisibility, which would inspire other satirical lyrics like: "And though we could see through you, it seems we hardly knew you."</p><p>Another comic-book character also served as inspiration for Saltzman's lyrics.</p><p>"If Translucent had been a character like Angel in the X-Men with actual wings, 'Wind Beneath My Wings' would have been the perfect song for his memorial," Saltzman said. "That was kind of the template that I had in my head when I was writing."</p><div type="image" title="Erin Moriarty performing as Starlight on season two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1190" width="1586" msid="85514234" hostid="261"></div><p class="drop-cap">Lennertz said that he "rolled over laughing" when Kripke, whom he met while studying music at USC, first mentioned the song idea. The composer received the script for the episode approximately six to eight months before they started shooting season two.</p><p>The direction he got from the showrunner, aside from channeling iconic powerhouse singers, was that it needed to be "ridiculously cheesy, over-the-top, but it also has to be something that Starlight would sing in the modern world. It has to be something that Vought would produce."</p><p>Because Kripke wanted the song to have lines that seemed serious on first listen, but are far more ridiculous upon closer inspection, Lennetz received a script with lyrics like "our heroes never die" and "your spirit fills the sky."</p><p>"It's the straighter the better whenever it comes to song parodies like that. And they're hard to do," Lennertz said.</p><p>"It's like a ski jump or something. If you don't commit to it, you're going to hurt yourself, always," he added. "It's one of those things where you've got to just be like, 'No, no, this is what we're doing and we're going to sell it till the very end of it. There's no wink. There's no cracking a smile. It is serious, as serious as can be.'"</p><p>With Saltzman's ideas and the visuals written into the script, Lennertz began composing "Never Truly Vanish," which took approximately six months mainly because Lennertz had to work around Moriarty's availability and other production factors.</p><p>Kripke and the "Boys" crew knew that the song was going to begin at the funeral, and would include visuals like young Translucent's bar mitzvah photos showing a floating yarmulke over his invisible head. Starlight would sing to an empty glass casket and the whole setting would feel "extremely patriotic with religious overtones," Saltzman said. </p><p>Then the scene would cut to The Deep (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/chace-crawford">Chace Crawford</a>) watching the funeral from a TV in a bar in Sandusky, Ohio. </p><p>"We had to make sure there were perfect sections in each part of the song so we could make that work in the show," Lennertz said, explaining that the verses needed to compliment Kripke's planned visuals.</p><p>Additionally, Lennertz said that the song needed to have a "huge bridge moment where she really belts it out and we needed the big drum fill that gets us back into the chorus, which every big power ballad has to have."</p><p>And that bridge had to be accompanied by Starlight's eyes lighting up as she dramatically raised her glowing hand.</p><div type="image" title="Erin Moriarty performing as Starlight on season two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1188" width="1584" msid="85514236" hostid="261"></div><p class="drop-cap">Lennertz said that the final version heard on the show is quite similar to the first demo, sans Moriarty's vocals. <br />After getting Kripke's seal of approval on the demo, which was completed in spring 2019, Lennertz worked with Moriarty to tailor the song to her range. </p><p>"Everybody wants something to sound the best it can sound," the composer said, adding that no matter how great a vocalist is, "if something's not in their range, it's gonna be terrible."</p><p>"We've all seen it on TV when some amazing singer sings the National Anthem and it's just one step too high and they can't hit the big note," he explained. "So luckily, Erin was really down with the entire approach."</p><p>Lennertz determined the top of Moriarty's range over the phone as he played the piano. Then he adjusted the key to fit her vocal ability. After Moriarty rehearsed the song and minor adjustments were made to accommodate room for breathing and other aspects, it was time for her to record.</p><p>"When Erin finally came in to sing, it was where it all sort of came together and everyone went, 'Oh, this is special,'" said Lennertz, describing the recording process as "magical." </p><div type="image" title="Erin Moriarty performing as Starlight on season two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1196" width="1594" msid="85514237" hostid="261"></div><p>Moriarty had never been in a recording studio prior to singing "Never Truly Vanish" so there was some skepticism about whether she'd be able to fully deliver. Any doubts were squashed when the actress began recording. </p><p>"It took two minutes, literally. And she was like, 'All right, let's go,'" Lennertz remembered. "She got in the booth and she absolutely sold the concept just like she did on-screen and said, 'I'm going to commit to this.'"</p><p>"Within 10 minutes she was fully acting the part and singing to the microphone as if she was Whitney Houston or Adele," he added. "She just jumped right in and nailed it. We were giddy."</p><p>Lennertz said the rough mix of Moriarty's vocals on the track proved to everyone "that it was going to work" musically and within the context of the show. </p><p>"Eric played it for us after it had been recorded and everyone kind of looked around and went, 'Wow, this is amazing. Who's doing the vocals?' And he was like, 'Erin is,'" Saltzman recalled. "She blew us all away."</p><p>Kripke decided that they needed a bigger stage and larger auditorium for the funeral because of how grand the song turned out, Lennertz said. By the time they were ready to film the scene, all Moriarty had to do was lip-sync and channel all the emotions that she brought in the studio. </p><p>"My jaw was on the floor when I finally saw what they shot," Lennertz added. "I was like, 'This is better than it read in the script.' And it read great in the script." </p><p>That led to making a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw_OHwI5dUQ">black-and-white music video,</a> starring Moriarty's character, surrounded by a bunch of invisible dancers.  </p><p>"It's just such a ridiculous idea," Lennertz said. "Eric and I always talk about the fact that they literally are paying us to be this ridiculous is just... We never would have thought of this when we were sitting in film school together."</p><h2 style="text-align: center;"> </h2><p class="drop-cap">The brilliance of "Never Truly Vanish" lies in how comically serious the song is, but it's also a precursor to Starlight's season two journey.</p><p>When viewers first met her, she was a starry-eyed supe who wanted to save the world with her ability to absorb electricity and emit energy blasts. So when she earned a coveted spot in the prestigious Vought-run supes group, known as The Seven, Starlight thought she hit the jackpot.</p><p>The illusion was quickly shattered when she realized that her colleagues were far from the clean-cut heroes that they pretended to be in public. On her first day as part of the Seven, she was sexually assaulted by The Deep. When she went to cry in the bathroom afterward, Translucent was lurking inside and misusing his power of invisibility to spy on women.</p><p>Throughout the season, Starlight would toe the line between her duty to Vought and her desire to make a real difference with the help of The Boys, a rag-tag vigilante group that includes her love interest, Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid). </p><div type="image" title="the boys 203 starlight" height="1089" width="1452" msid="85514239" hostid="261"></div><p>Starlight's previous experiences, along with being forced to perform a tribute to a perverted supe at the opening of season two, set the stage for her to <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-erin-moriarty-starlight-dark-side-season-2-interview-2020-10">summon "a dark side of herself,"</a> Moriarty previously told Insider. </p><p>"It was always going to be a Starlight moment," Lennertz said of "Never Truly Vanish."</p><p>"One of the things they really wanted it to do was comment on the fact that she made a huge transition from the beginning of season one to the end of season one," he continued, "both with her relationship with Hughie and with her empowerment of 'I'm not going to take s--- anymore.'"</p><p>"And here was this guy Translucent, who she knew was this creep that used to hang out in the bathroom. And the real honest truth about Vought is, 'That's too bad. You gotta sing this thing because you're part of The Seven and we pay your salary.' It's that gross over-commercialization, sellout thing that had to be in there to set up the rest of season two."</p><p class="drop-cap">Historically, superhero series and movies have largely been shut out of major award shows. In recent years that's changed thanks to groundbreaking projects like "Black Panther," which earned Marvel its first three Oscars in 2019.</p><p>In its freshman season, "The Boys" nabbed one Emmy nomination, for outstanding sound editing for a comedy or drama series (one hour). By the time the show returned for season two, more people caught onto its <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-aya-cash-colby-minifie-season-2-racism-interview-2020-10">clever commentary on real-world events</a> and ability to completely flip the superhero genre on its head.</p><p>Barack Obama even <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CI8RF86AxVo/">named "The Boys" as one of his favorite shows of last year</a> and told <a href="https://ew.com/books/barack-obama-a-promised-land-interview/">Entertainment Weekly</a> that he watched the series when he needed a break from writing his memoir, "A Promised Land."</p><p>"When President Obama singled the show out as one of his favorite of the year that blew my mind," Saltzman said, calling "The Boys" a "zeitgeist show" that's become part of the larger "cultural conversation."</p><div type="image" title="the boys season 2 supes" height="1233" width="2500" msid="85514240" hostid="261"></div><p>Given the continued reach of "The Boys," the five total Emmy nominations this year weren't out of the blue. Still, Lennertz said it was a "total shocker" to those involved in the making of the show.</p><p>"All of us just assume that superhero shows aren't going to get award nominations because they haven't in the past," Lennertz said.</p><p>In addition to the nomination for "Never Truly Vanish," the series got a nod for drama series and was recognized in categories honoring sound mixing, special visual effects, and writing.</p><p>Saltzman admitted he was completely clueless about how best song nominations work because he had never written anything that had a shot at one. In fact, he wasn't even planning on waking up early for the Emmy nominations, since he didn't expect much from them. But when his wife came into their bedroom that morning, he had exciting news to share.</p><p>"She saw me sitting up in there and she goes, 'Oh, you're up?' I said, 'Yeah. Hey, guess what I have in common with Robert Lopez and Bo Burnham?' And she said, 'What?' I said, 'That we're all Emmy nominees for best song. And she was like, 'What?'" he recalled with a laugh.</p><p>"It was a huge thrill to be in that company. And such a delightful surprise."</p><p class="drop-cap">For fans who enjoyed Starlight's "Never Truly Vanish" and speedster A-Train's "lit" anthem "Faster" (performed by actor Jessie T. Usher, featuring Aimée Proal) from season two, Lennertz said "there's a lot of songs" in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-boys-season-3-amazon-details-information-2020-9">upcoming third season</a> - but he didn't reveal who will be singing. </p><p>"I can't tell anybody what they are or how many, but Eric did let everybody know that there would be more supes singing this year," he said. "I'm really excited about who's singing those."</p><p>The composer added: "What we haven't done yet is a duet and I would love to do a duet. That's all I can say."</p><div type="image" title="the boys 202 a train starlight" height="1505" width="2007" msid="85514242" hostid="261"></div><p>For Lennertz, getting to work with Kripke for nearly 30 years and compose original tracks for the characters of "The Boys" is a full-circle moment that makes the recent Emmy nomination even more rewarding.</p><p>"It was like somebody handed me the job that I didn't even know I wanted five years ago," he said. "And now I've got my dear friend being like, 'Hey, do it for us and let's have fun with it and go over the top.'"</p><p>"I will keep writing as many songs for Eric as he wants me to write."</p>

A deep dive into Starlight's unabashedly over-the-top, Emmy-nominated power anthem 'Never Truly Vanish' from 'The Boys'

It also happens to be its best.</p><p>As <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword>s slowly begin to return to theaters worldwide, the film, based on the 1998 animated movie of the same name, is among the first big releases. If there was any movie to wait months for, it's "Mulan."</p><p>Like the original, the film follows Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei) as she disguises herself as a man, Hua Jun, to take her father's place in war while a mysterious villain, Bori Khan (Jason Scott Lee), threatens to invade China and kill the Emperor. Not only is Liu the perfect embodiment of the heroine, but the cinematography and action sequences deliver a spectacle that feels reminiscent of 2002's "Hero" and as captivating as "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon."</p><p>If you're worried about this just being another shot-for-shot remake of a Disney classic, that's not what you're getting here. While the film pays homage to the original, it stands on its own and feels more like a superhero movie about a young woman embracing her power than a film about a Disney princess. </p><p>If you grew up loving the animated film and teared up watching the trailer's instrumental use of "Reflection," you'll surely lose it when you see how it's utilized in the remake.</p><h2><strong>What you should know: The film stars an Asian cast and is based on a poem in addition to the Disney animated classic. It brings back Christina Aguilera to perform two songs.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="mulan world premiere" height="2000" width="3000" msid="77916933" hostid="261"></div><p>Instead of a simple rehash of the original Disney movie, the new film is more connected to "<a href="http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/china/mulan.pdf">The Ballad of Mulan</a>." The poem, from the fifth or sixth century, describes a young woman who fought for her country for more than a decade before returning home.</p><p>Liu, a popular actress in China, is joined by an impressive cast that includes Donnie Yen ("Ip Man," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"), Jet Li, Gong Li ("Memoirs of a Geisha), Tzi Ma ("The Farewell"), and Jason Scott Lee ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny").</p><p>In addition, the film brings back Matthew Wilder, who worked on the music in the 1997 film to bring new versions of "Reflection" to life, including one sung by Liu. Aguilera performs a new version of "Reflection" and a new song, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/christina-aguilera-new-mulan-song-loyal-brave-true-2020-3">Loyal, Brave, True.</a>" The film is directed by Niki Caro ("Whale Rider"). </p><h2><strong>What's great: Some changes from the original movie, a new female character who will break your heart, Liu's performance, and the music, which serves as the emotional compass for the film</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="mulan training scene" height="2000" width="3000" msid="77916937" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Instead of following its predecessor closely as some of the other Disney remakes of the '90s have done ("Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King"), "Mulan" sets out from the start to be vastly different. </p><p>In the live-action film, Mulan is bestowed with powers in the form of "Chi." When she channels this inner energy, she's an unstoppable force, gliding across rooftops, firing off arrows with precision, and a formidable foe for any opponent. If it sounds like you're reading about a superhero, you're right. Mulan feels like she's a character straight out of a Marvel superhero movie. This is her origin story.</p><div type="image" title="mulan chi powers" height="346" width="800" msid="77916940" hostid="261"></div><p>However, since Mulan was born a girl, she's told a woman's place is to bring honor to her family and get married. And so she hides her Chi from the world, which is meant for warriors, not daughters. Otherwise, she'll be called a witch.</p><p>Liu encapsulates what it means to be Mulan. Unlike the original character, this Mulan isn't clumsy, adding an enviable confidence to her. She's both a fierce fighter when necessary (cinematographer Mandy Walker told Insider the <a href="https://www.insider.com/cinematographer-mulan-said-that-liu-yifei-actress-90-own-stunts-2020-2">actress performed 90% of her own stunts</a>.), but also has a sense of humor. The actress gets a few key laughs early in the film when heading to the matchmaker and later on during a running gag while trying to keep her disguise hidden.</p><p>More time is spent building the core relationship between Mulan and her father (Tzi Ma), expanding upon their small amount of time on screen in the original. While sending an empowering message to young women, the film is also a perfect father-daughter watch.</p><div type="image" title="mulan father tzi ma" height="1182" width="2858" msid="77916944" hostid="261"></div><p>However, the best addition to "Mulan" is Gong Li's character, Xianniang, a character unique to the remake. One of the film's most fascinating characters, she's positioned as a perfect foil to Mulan. To say much else would be a spoiler. She'll likely become a new favorite.</p><p>Xianniang and Mulan share some of the film's strongest and most captivating scenes together. The film itself is just visually impressive. There are several moments shot with Mulan on horseback or in deep reflection that are gorgeous. One shot, in particular, will draw comparisons to a popular image from the final season of "Game of Thrones."</p><div type="image" title="Xianniang mulan movie" height="1255" width="3000" msid="77916950" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="mulan gliding over horse" height="1168" width="2726" msid="77916960" hostid="261"></div><p>The work of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa ("Seven Samurai") along with 2002's "Hero" (also featuring Donnie Yen and Jet Li) inspired the massive battle sequences in the film. And it shows. Fans will get a kick out of seeing warriors run vertically and horizontally across walls, and perform fight sequences on roofs.</p><div type="image" title="mulan racing up wall" height="320" width="800" msid="77916964" hostid="261"></div><p>If you're upset the remake isn't a musical, you'll be happy to learn the film still incorporates some of the original's iconic music. No one's breaking out in song, but the music for "Reflection" and "Honor to Us All" is used cleverly, along with a nod to "A Girl Worth Fighting For," that will satisfy any '90s kids who grew up with the film. </p><p>The use of "Reflection," is a huge anchor and anthem for the film. If you became emotional watching the full-length trailer which unveiled the song's return, buckle up. Don't be surprised if the waterworks start when the full extent of the song hits during a pivotal moment in the movie. This is one where you'll want a few tissues on hand.</p><div type="image" title="mulan disney live action" height="1061" width="2242" msid="77916965" hostid="261"></div><p>As for Jet Li? He doesn't simply play a passive, fragile version of the Emperor here. Li gets his own small moment to shine. In addition, one of the best surprises, a well-guarded secret on Disney's part, comes late in the film. The small moment received some of the biggest cheers at the film's premiere. </p><div type="image" title="jet li emperor mulan" height="1170" width="2846" msid="77916968" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What's not: The main villain feels a bit underdeveloped along with the majority of Mulan's male comrades. There's little reason for the phoenix to be a part of this movie.</strong></h2><p>While "Mulan" delivers a refreshing new foil for the title character in another warrior woman, the main bad guy is the most generic, one-dimensional villain of any live-action remake.</p><p>He's still more menacing than Jafar in Disney's new "Aladdin," but other than that, Bora is a one-note character who we're told is waging war against China to avenge the death of his father. That's it. No more backstory. The only other thing we learn from the film's production notes is that he's a "mysterious," "embittered Rouran fighter from the North." Scary!</p><div type="image" title="mulan villains" height="1017" width="2149" msid="77916972" hostid="261"></div><p>Some of the men, with the exception of Ma, who plays Mulan's father, and Mulan's Commander Tung (Yen), aren't fleshed out well.</p><p>Ling, Chien-Po, and Yao, Mulan's comrades in war, are some of the most memorable characters in Disney's 1998 film. So it's a bit disappointing there isn't a great distinction between them here. A fourth character, named Cricket, is added to the mix as well to give a nod to Mulan's sidekick in the animated film, but they just feel like fan-service.</p><p>Mulan doesn't interact with them much, but they're still all supposed to be good pals. By the film's end, you're not convinced Mulan is actually that close with any of these men except Yoson An's Chen Honghui who she harbors feelings for.</p><div type="image" title="mulan yao ling po" height="1176" width="2856" msid="77916977" hostid="261"></div><p>That's the main issue with "Mulan." It seems like the film tried to just push all of the men aside to make sure they had fully-fledged female characters. While it's great to have the latter, it shouldn't be at the expense of the former. An outstanding film should be able to strike a balance between both. The lack of character depth in the male characters doesn't weigh down the overall movie, but it's something older fans may think of long after exiting the theater.</p><p>Though the remake got rid of Mulan's sidekick dragon/protector Mushu (Eddie Murphy) to ground itself in reality a bit more, it adds an unnecessary, voiceless phoenix in its place.</p><div type="image" title="mulan phoenix" height="1076" width="2816" msid="77916986" hostid="261"></div><p>We're told early on in the film the phoenix is a protector and guardian to the emperor, but here it comes to the aid of Mulan when she needs it most and seeks guidance. It feels like the first great superhero movie of 2020.</p><p>Different enough from the animated film with great action sequences, it still manages to capture the heart of the original. It doesn't even matter that it's not a musical. If you're a fan of the animated film, there are subtle nods for diehards. For children and families, the movie encourages you to embrace your differences and be true to yourself. </p><p>When director Niki Caro introduced the film at its world premiere in Los Angeles at California's Dolby Theatre on March 9, she said, "At this difficult time, we hope that Mulan's fighting spirit continues to inspire the world."
