But its valuation raised many eyebrows! Now that a month and a half has gone by since its listing, time is apt to examine if this gamble paid off. Will <keyword id="93460" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai-india" source="Orion">Hyundai India</keyword> justify its high valuation? Or does the listing highlight broader questions about the overheated valuation dynamics of Indian markets? A record-breaking <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword> but questions remain Hyundai Motor India’s mega Initial Public Offering (IPO), launched in October 2024, broke records by raising ₹27,870 crore, making it India’s largest-ever IPO. The offer was oversubscribed by 2.37 times, highlighting robust demand. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss. <h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. On listing, Hyundai was valued at $18 billion, positioning it as one of India’s most valuable automotive companies. However, such high valuations often temper investor enthusiasm, resulting in more cautious short-term outcomes. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. In the morning trade, the company's market valuation also rose by Rs 15,941.78 crore to Rs 4.29 lakh crore on the BSE while it stood at Rs 4.30 lakh crore on the NSE. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 127 points or 0.16 per cent to trade at 81,868.34 while NSE Nifty went up 61.40 points or 0.25 per cent to 25,012.55. In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India reported a 47 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 3,650 crore for June quarter, riding on the back of cost reduction efforts, favourable commodity prices and foreign exchange gains. The auto major had logged a net profit of Rs 2,485 crore in April-June FY24. Net sales increased to Rs 33,875 crore in the June quarter as compared with Rs 30,845 crore in the year-ago period, the company said. The country's largest carmaker said it sold 5,21,868 vehicles during the first quarter, up 5 per cent as compared to the same period previous fiscal. The company said it sold 4,51,308 units in the domestic market in the first quarter, an increase of 4 per cent over the same period of FY24.

Maruti Suzuki India stock hits 52-week high after robust Q1 results

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

According to the report, rural areas are showing strong signs of recovery, and the increased enquiries suggest a positive outlook for sales. While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles are set to lead the charge this festive season, the commercial vehicle (CV) market is expected to grow at a more modest pace. Demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs) is projected to increase in the low single digits, primarily driven by replacement demand as freight availability improves across India. Similarly, the tractor segment is expected to perform well over the next few years, with volume growth likely in the high single digits from FY24 to FY26. Tractors are seen as a strong performer in the long term, and the sector is poised to benefit from India’s agricultural demand and rural recovery. Looking beyond the festive season, the report suggests that the long-term outlook for the two-wheeler and tractor segments remains robust. Historical sales cycles, which typically span two to four years, suggest that these sectors could reach new peaks in the coming years. As a result, the report forecasts high single-digit volume growth for two-wheelers and tractors through FY24-26, while passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are expected to see low single-digit growth. Festive season to drive over 15% growth in Indian Automobile Market, says report

The startup operates in the area of data analytics, cloud engineering, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (Al), to assist companies in data driven decision making. With this, Maruti Suzuki will own an equity stake of over 6.44 per cent in the startup, the automaker informed stock exchanges on Saturday. The investment is being made through the Maruti Suzuki lnnovation Fund, an initiative to undertake strategic investments in startups which exhibit high levels of technological innovation. This is the second such investment by the company. Earlier, the company invested in <keyword id="21061374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sociograph-solutions-private-limited" source="keywords">Sociograph Solutions Private Limited</keyword>, specialised in AI, in June 2022. "We have been working with startups since 2019, as a part of the Maruti Suzuki lnnovation Program. Aligned with the government's Start Up India initiative, we are actively working to help strengthen the startup ecosystem and encourage innovation to develop solutions relevant to the automobile industry," HisashiTakeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India. The car maker’s shares were trading flat on Thursday morning even as brokerages underlined that margins are expected to recover and demand is expected to be stable going forward. Maruti Suzuki’s shares have gained 2.9% in the last one month, and a meager 1.37% in 2023 so far, underperforming the broader Nifty Auto index which gained nearly 8% and 2%, respectively. The outlook for the small car segment looks worse for FY24. Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bharghava said in a post-earnings call with analysts that the growth in small cars is expected to remain flat, but added that he’s “not losing sleep over it”. There are two reasons for this, according to Bharghava – a decisive shift in consumer buying preferences, which is reflected in the growth in the utility vehicles segment. The other reason is affordability – small cars have gotten expensive over the years due to reasons like inflation, new regulatory requirements adding costs, among others. For instance, the entry-level Alto K10 starts at ₹4.7 lakh and goes all the way up to ₹7 lakh (approximate on-road prices), making them out of the reach of many people in a country. The average annual salary in India was ₹3.88 lakh per annum in 2021, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India. Bharghava quipped that Indians will need to get richer for the small cars to grow further. Utility vehicles accounted for 21% of Maruti Suzuki’s total domestic volumes in FY23, and 24% in Q4. In addition to this, the car maker has announced plans to launch six new electric vehicles by 2030. The company had shown off a concept version in February this year, but the first production model is expected to roll out only in 2025. Analysts at Motilal Oswal echoed similar sentiments while expressing their bullish outlook on the stock, adding that improving supplies thanks to easing semiconductor constraints will aid Maruti Suzuki’s margins. “After two consecutive years of market share loss, we believe that Maruti Suzuki is at the cusp of market share recovery led by new launches. Healthy order book and operating leverage tailwinds will further support strong performance going ahead,” the analysts at JM Financial said. Overall, both analysts and the company itself expect Maruti Suzuki to outperform the industry in FY24, which is expected to register a volume growth of 5-7%. A strong order book of 4.12 lakh units or about 25% of Maruti Suzuki’s FY23 volumes also adds to the confidence. Audi too has announced a price hike of up to 2% and other automakers are also expected to follow suit. The trigger for the price hike is not a change in taxes, something which has often been a reason in the past. Maruti Suzuki has cited an “increase in cost pressure” due to the overall inflation and increased commodity prices as the reason. In the pre-GST era, it was customary for the government to hike duties, so consumers would rush to buy cars, TVs and more, lest they turn expensive after the Budget. After GST has taken over the burden of most of such taxation, the Budget-date fear has been absent from the market. However, this does not mean that purchasing a car at the end of the year is not worth considering. “However, if you are getting very good benefits, it may offset the drop in resale value that can be the case with your vehicle,” Shetty added. So, you need to consider the value of the discounts being offered and compare it to the value that you are losing out by purchasing a car at the end of the year. Car prices set to rise in January – Should you buy one in December?

At the same time, Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor and Eicher Motor reported healthy growth in sales. Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales to 68,514 units in April as compared to 71,467 units during the same period last year. Total commercial vehicle sales of the automaker also dipped 27% to 22,492 units in April from 30,838 units last year. Also, its total wholesales declined 4% to 69,599 units as compared to 72,468 units last year. Following the weak sales, shares of Tata Motors fell more than 2% on Tuesday. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported a dip of 5% in its total wholesales — as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year. Shares of Hero MotoCorp were down more than 2%. Domestic sales for the two wheeler maker declined marginally to 3.86 lakh units in April 2023 from 3.98 lakh units in April 2022. But its exports slumped over 50% to 9,923 units from 20,132 units last year. The company said it expects the momentum to build up in the coming months on account of a combination of multiple factors, including a slew of new product launches, a healthy growth in the country's GDP and positive consumer sentiment. Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor, Eicher Motors shine India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki announced a good sales growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles to 1.6 lakh units in April as compared to 1.5 lakh during the same period last year. It registered a 7% increase in total dispatches to dealers at 1.6 lakh in April. Its total sales including domestic and exports rose to 1.6 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units last year. As a result, shares of Maruti Suzuki gained 2.15% to ₹8,771. The automaker’s total domestic sales including PV, LCV and OEM stood at 1.43 lakh units as compared to 1.32 lakh units last year. Maruti Suzuki highlighted that it has been facing a shortage of electronic components while it has taken all possible measures to minimise the impact. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company announced a 4% rise in sales at 3.06 lakh units in April 2023 from 2.95 lakh units in the same month, last year. TVS’ two-wheeler segment delivered a sales growth of 5% to 2.94 lakh units from 2.8 lakh units during the same period last year. Motorcycle volumes rose 10% to 1.52 lakh units from 1.39 lakh units. Scooter sales grew 5% to 1.07 lakh units from 1.02 lakh units last year. Reacting to the April sales numbers, shares of TVS rose 1.55% to ₹1,156 per share. Its electric vehicle, the iQube, reached a sales milestone of 1 lakh units. “The production for April 2023 was constrained due to AIS156 changeover and supply chain challenges, TVS Motor is confident of ramping up from the month of May 2023. The order book for TVS iQube continues to be very robust and TVS Motor will retain the growth momentum,” said the company in an exchange filing. At the same time, Eicher Motors reported a 18% on year jump in sales volumes of Royal Enfield motorcycles at 73,136 units against 62,155 units last year. Meanwhile, the international business of the company declined 49% to 4,255 units that were exported in April 2023 as against 8,303 units in April 2022. The models with engine capacity up to 350cc recorded 26% sales growth at 64,728 units as against 51,564 units in April 2022. Meanwhile, the sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc dropped 21% to 8,408 units sold against 10,591 units in the same period last year.
