The main differentiator, though, would be the price range. <h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade. Take cars, for instance. You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products! <h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year. <h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024. During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. Festive season to drive over 15% growth in Indian Automobile Market, says report

Japanese car maker <keyword id="20032993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suzuki" source="keywords">Suzuki</keyword> Motor Corporation on Monday said it will continue to expand SUV portfolio in India to recover its overall market share in the passenger vehicle segment. The company, which currently has around 58 per cent stake in <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-Suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India, said its net sales increased by 732.6 billion yen (15.8 per cent) year-on-year to 5,374.3 billion yen for the last financial year. Operating profit increased by 115 billion yen (32.8 per cent) YoY to 465.6 billion yen. "We will continue to promote the expansion of our SUV models (in India) and aim to recover our total passenger car share," Suzuki Motor Corporation said in a statement. Currently, <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> Suzuki sells SUV (sport utility vehicle) models like Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara in the domestic market. The company's market share has come down to around 42 per cent from over 50 per cent a couple of years back in the domestic passenger vehicle segment on account of limited options in the SUV segment. With the market demand rising for SUVs, the company is in the process of bolstering its presence in the segment and regaining its market share. Suzuki Motor Corp said that in April 2024, a new production line with an annual capacity of 1 lakh units started operations at the Manesar plant. The company said it plans to secure a production capacity of around 40 lakh units in India by FY2030. Suzuki Motor Corp said it expects record sales and profits this fiscal due to higher unit sales. "The company is compiling strategies in various fields, including technology, and will announce the new mid-term management plan by the end of FY2024," it stated. Suzuki says will continue to expand SUV portfolio to recover mkt share in India

Automaker <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> lndia has invested about Rs 1.99 crore in <keyword id="21061376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amlgo-labs-private-limited" source="keywords">Amlgo Labs Private Limited</keyword>, a technology-led startup. The startup operates in the area of data analytics, cloud engineering, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (Al), to assist companies in data driven decision making. With this, Maruti Suzuki will own an equity stake of over 6.44 per cent in the startup, the automaker informed stock exchanges on Saturday. The investment is being made through the Maruti Suzuki lnnovation Fund, an initiative to undertake strategic investments in startups which exhibit high levels of technological innovation. This is the second such investment by the company. Earlier, the company invested in <keyword id="21061374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sociograph-solutions-private-limited" source="keywords">Sociograph Solutions Private Limited</keyword>, specialised in AI, in June 2022. Maruti Suzuki invests in machine learning, artificial intelligence startup Amlgo Labs

<ul><li>EV penetration is set to reach 6-8% by FY27 compared to a mere 1.3% in FY23 as per a CRISIL report.</li><li>The total cost of acquisition (<keyword id="21010615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tca" source="keywords">TCA</keyword>) is lower for EVs but the total cost of ownership (<keyword id="19896738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tco" source="keywords">TCO</keyword>) is higher as compared to other variants, says the report.</li><li>For e-cabs, the TCA is higher than that of TCO but charging infra and other factors play a crucial role in adoption.</li></ul> <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">Electric Vehicles</keyword> (EVs) are here to take over the auto market. In the US, this growing trend is close to reaching double digits in terms of penetration among personal vehicles. Even in India, the penetration is growing as domestic manufacturers increasingly gravitate towards the EV segment. In addition to Tata Motors’ EV versions of Nexon, Tigor and <keyword id="20075324" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiago-ev" source="keywords">Tiago EV</keyword> and MG’s ZS — many other automakers are entering the EV lane too. Foremost among them is <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, which is planning to launch its first EV by 2025, and Renault’s electric Kwid, Zoe and KZE are also expected to come to India soon. MG Motor India already has a couple of fairly successful EV models and plans to introduce many more soon. For foreign brands like Tesla, policy roadblocks on imports, proved to be a limiting factor so far. However, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/new-ev-policy-elon-musks-tesla-may-soon-enter-india-as-import-taxes-slashed-for-electric-vehicles/articleshow/108527306.cms">recent changes in the Indian policy landscape</a> lower the import taxes if the companies commit to manufacturing in India in the subsequent years. Such policy incentives are likely to attract even more global EV brands to India. But what do these new models of new-age tech cars mean to car buyers sitting on the fence? As per a recent analysis by CRISIL, the total cost of ownership (TCO) or total cost of ownership of passenger vehicles could work in favour of EVs in the next three years for Indian buyers. So, how does the math work for prospective owners? TCA is lower but the TCO may remain higher TCO includes the purchase price of a particular asset, plus operating costs over the asset’s life span. As of FY22, the TCO of EVs was 20-30% higher than that of all three variants which is petrol, diesel and CNG. “In FY27, we expect the economics to again remain the same. However, despite not-so-favourable cost economics, higher adoption has been witnessed initially by environment-conscious buyers,” said CRISIL. The latest analysis agrees with the <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0361198120947089">earlier research</a> from <keyword id="20691574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-resources-institute-india" source="keywords">World Resources Institute India</keyword> (<keyword id="20336071" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wri-india" source="keywords">WRI India</keyword>) on TCO in India. The study highlighted that the TCO for EVs for personal use remains higher and may require additional financial incentives to be economically viable. The total cost of acquisition (TCA) on the other hand is lower for EVs as compared to other variants. TCA of an EV is 24% lower than that of a diesel variant, and 4% lower for a petrol variant. The TCA for an EV and a CNG variant is the same. This is due to lower registration charges for EVs amid high loan-to-value (LTV) ratios. Overall, the report expects EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment to reach 6-8% by FY27 from a mere 1.3% in FY23. Meter down: How do EVs fare as cabs? Unlike in the PV segment, the cost dynamics are reversed for cab aggregators who want to drive in the EV lane – where even though the TCA is higher, TCO remains lower. In FY22, the TCO of EVs for cab aggregators was lower than that of petrol and diesel vehicles by around 29% and around 19%, respectively. However, the TCO of EVs is still higher than that of a CNG variant by around 13% even for commercial use. This is due to the higher running of a commercial passenger vehicle and high fossil fuel prices. The FAME-II subsidy provided by the Government of India incentivises the adoption of EVs for commercial use, including 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and buses for public transport. However, the TCA of an EV for a cab aggregator is still around 17% higher than that of a diesel vehicle, 26% higher than a petrol vehicle, and around 16% higher than a CNG variant. “In FY27, we expect the TCA of EVs to be lower than that of diesel and petrol variants, but higher than that of a CNG variant,” says CRISIL. The report expects the cab aggregator segment to lead the drive towards EVs, resulting in a 4% EV penetration by FY26. The taxi segment accounts for 10-15% of sales within passenger cars. However, a few challenges continue to linger, limiting the wider adoption of e-cabs on the road. A limited number of charging stations range anxiety and lack of large original equipment manufacturer (OEM) presence are hindering EV adoption. EVs used for personal use, however, are mostly charged at home, and charging infrastructure does not play a very high role there. “The lower battery cost (due to expected localisation led by the phased manufacturing programme or PMP) is expected to offset the lack of FAME subsidy and will help maintain the competitiveness of EVs against diesel and CNG variants for cab aggregators in the long run,” says CRISIL.

Electrifying auto market: Planning to buy an EV, compare their price with petrol, diesel and CNG variants

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,061.5 crore in the second quarter of FY23, Maruti Suzuki India said in a statement. The car maker also said that it recorded its highest-ever quarterly sale volume, net sales and net profit in this quarter. During the quarter under review, the company registered net sales of Rs 35,535.1 crore, against Rs 28,543.50 crore recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, owing to higher sales volume and product mix, it said. The company sold 5,52,055 vehicles during the quarter as compared to 5,17,395 units in the second quarter of last year. Of the 5,52,055 vehicles sold in the July-September period this year, 4,82,731 units were sold in the domestic market while the remaining 69,324 cars were exported, the company said The EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation) margin for the quarter stood at 12.9%. On a year-on-year basis, EBITDA rose nearly 73%, margin expanding by 360 basis points. Raw material costs as a percentage of sales fell 300 basis points from last year to 73.5% from 76.5%.

"The company has planned to increase the prices of its cars in January, 2024 on account of increased cost pressure driven by overall inflation and increased commodity prices. <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India is looking to bring in more flexibility in its production processes in order to produce <keyword id="36810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicles" source="Orion">vehicles</keyword> as per the evolving market scenario, according to a senior company official. The country's largest carmaker is looking to strengthen the production of high selling utility vehicles while curtailing the roll out of the entry level cars. "Diverging <keyword id="6358993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demand" source="Orion">demand</keyword> patterns between utility vehicles and the small car segment is continuing. The company is working on increasing the flexibility in operations to produce vehicles as per the evolving market demand," Maruti Suzuki India Executive Officer Corporate Affairs Rahul Bharti said in an analyst call. He noted that the automaker has discovered that one of the reasons for the recent dip in the margins is because it was producing "some slow-moving cars". "And we did not have sufficient production <keyword id="6390515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capacity" source="Orion">capacity</keyword> for the cars that had demand. If we had the flexibility of both, whether it is semiconductor supplies or in-house production, we would probably have less of such a problem," Bharti said. Hence, it's a conscious move to increase the flexibility of production operations, he added. MSI currently has an installed production capacity of around 23 lakh units per annum spread across its plants in Haryana and Gujarat. Bharti said the initiative "comes at a small cost" as it involves a slightly suboptimal format of production. Elaborating on the drop in <keyword id="6357824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sales" source="Orion">sales</keyword> of the entry level cars, he noted that the cost of acquisition has gone up disproportionately because of the increased regulatory intensity in the past few years. "And the income of the customer in this segment has not taken off. We are hoping that sooner or later, the income growth will catch up, and the small car segment will revive," he added. Bharti noted that the company has also seen reduction in first-time buyers. "...almost a 10 per cent reduction in the percentage of first-time buyers from the market for us. So, it's closely correlated. We are hoping that when the income growth in this segment of the population catches up with the increased cost, and the regulatory intensity does not move up further in the next few years, at some point in time, this segment should come back," he stated. According to the recent SIAM data, entry level car wholesales in India have dropped to 35,000 units in the second quarter this fiscal as compared to the peak of 1.38 lakh cars in July-September 2018-19. Replying to a query regarding overseas shipments, Bharti said that going ahead the company plans a three-fold rise in its exports volume by increasing its exports to 7.5 lakh to 8 lakh units a year by 2030-31. MSI continues to be the largest exporter of cars from India. "Our focus continues to be on Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and even the Middle East. Barring the US and China, we will be almost everywhere," Bharti said.
