Maruti Suzuki is going to turn India into its global manufacturing hub for its upcoming premium compact car ‘Baleno’, which will debut in India on October 26. 
 
Suzuki, which has 56% stake in Maruti, will start exporting its upcoming ‘Baleno’ to over 100 countries, including Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, etc. 
 
This is Maruti Suzuki's first attempt in the premium compact segment and will make a. Baleno was unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will compete with Hyundai's Elite i20 and Honda's Jazz, among others. 
 
Baleno will have a 1.2litre petrol engine (manual and automatic variants) and 1.3-litre diesel engine. 
 
"Baleno has been developed for the global markets and India will be the exclusive manufacturing hub for the car," R S Kalsi, executive director (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki, told TOI here. 
 
This will be a big achievement for the company and workers at Manesar factory said that it was a proud moment for them as a vehicle made at Indian facility will be sold in Japan. 
 
After S-Cross, Baleno will be the second car to be sold through Maruti's premium retail network 'Nexa'.

‘Made in India’ Maruti Baleno to ply on international roads soon

The undisputed champion in small-car market, <keyword id="6365618" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword>, is leaving no stone unturned to pierce mid-size and premium vehicles segment. For this, it is putting a new independent management structure and dealership in place to sell bigger cars, price between Rs 9 lakh and 10 lakh or above. 
 The mid-size segment is currently dominated by Japanese rivals <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Motor and <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> Motor and Maruti, which makes one in every two cars sold in India, is making more concerted efforts to enter the segment. 
 
Even though the company made many attempts in the past, it could not achieve much success. Maruti’s newest offering in the mid-size range, Ciaz, saw decent demand but it had to discontinue selling the Kizashi, a premium sedan it brought to India a few years ago, as it found very few buyers. 
 
As per reports by the Economic Times, merely 1-3% of Maruti's vehicle sales currently come from vehicles priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
Now, a fresh team, internally named NEXA, will aim at offering a different experience to customers. 
 
Partho Banerjee, Maruti's new Vice President for sales and dealer network, will head NEXA who will be supported by two zonal heads and eight regional heads. 
 
"Every year, our company reflects on the roadmap it intends to take. This new structure was decided last week by the company," a Maruti executive told ET. 
 
He added that just like Toyota has Lexus and Nissan has Infiniti as their luxury brands, Maruti Suzuki would have NEXA as its premium brand for vehicles priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
 
However, a Maruti spokesman declined to comment on "an internal company matter" but as per people once the new channel comes in, existing dealerships will not be able to sell cars which are priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
 
However, the present dealers have been given an option to open new NEXA outlets and Maruti is mulling to have at least 100 such outlets in the first 12-18 months, before expanding into the interiors of the country. Maruti presently has around 1,500 outlets. 
 
Meanwhile, the new outlets are likely to sell the upcoming crossover, globally called the S Cross, as well as 7-seater multipurpose and sport-utility vehicles Maruti plans to launch post-2018, people in the know told the financial daily. 
 
It is likely that Maruti may bring back Kizashi. 
 
"The company is likely to test the waters with the S Cross ... there are other models in the pipeline, which could be sold through these outlets, but they will depend on how the premium outlet model evolves," said one of people in the know. 
 
Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst at IHS Automotive, said the move pointed at Maruti and Japanese parent Suzuki Motor’s aspiration to move towards the premium segment. 
 
"This is a bold move on part of Maruti Suzuki to transition to a higher level. The initial response to the Ciaz shows that there are takers for Maruti Suzuki in Rs 10 lakh range ...Having said that, it will be a challenging task for Maruti Suzuki to sustain this imagery over Rs 10 lakh,” he told ET. 
 
Another person who closely tracks the company said Maruti and its dealers may invest in personnel and training and the dealerships may have to hire executives from the hospitality or aviation industry for the NEXA outlets, to give different experience to customers.

Maruti has set up ‘crack teams’ to drive out rivals Honda and Toyota from the Indian mid-size car segment

Coimbatore, June 17 (): Karur Vysya Bank (KVB) has entered into an arrangement with Maruti Suzuki to fund buyers of Maruti vehicles. Both existing and new customers would be eligible to avail themselves of loans from KVB. The bank is offering a special product for buyers of Maruti Suzuki vehicles under which 100 per cent on-road finance with a six-month holiday period is provided at attractive interest rate, except on Omni and EECO. The loans are available for salaried and the self- employed. Easy availability of finance is a key driver during these times and this partnership with Maruti Suzuki is a way to offer consumers convenience and cost-effectiveness at the same time, the bank's president and COO J Natarajan said in a press release. Karur Vysya Bank offers customers in-principle loan sanction in 15 minutes and the existing customers of the bank can get their loans disbursed the same day. The entire process from application to disbursement of the loan is digitalized with no manual intervention, Natarajan said. About 80 per cent of the new cars are typically financed via banks in the country. In the current situation of fighting COVID-19 pandemic challenges, such customised finance solutions would help boost customer sentiment, he said. New Delhi, May 22 () The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Friday announced partnership with Cholamandalam Investment &amp; Finance Company Ltd to provide customised auto retail financing solutions to retail buyers. The new solution 'Buy-Now-Pay-Later Offer' is aimed to provide customers with easy financing options, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement. Under the partnership, the companies are also offering a two-month deferment of Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) to car customers who currently are under resource crunch amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it added. The new solution will allow customers to start paying the EMIs after 60 days of loan disbursement. The offer is available on select Maruti Suzuki models and will be applicable on loan disbursement till June 30, 2020, it added. Commenting on the partnership, MSI Executive Director (Marketing &amp; Sales) Shashank Srivastava said, "it is aimed to offer comfort to buyers who may have faced liquidity crunch during the COVID-19 lockdown. Maruti Suzuki sells over 160,700 units of Swift in CY 2020

<keyword id="21991719" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="passenger-vehicle-exports" source="keywords">Passenger vehicle exports</keyword> from India rose by 2.68 lakh units in the last four financial years with <keyword id="19931193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Maruti Suzuki India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Maruti Suzuki India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword> accounting for nearly 70 per cent of the <keyword id="21991720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="incremental-shipments" source="keywords">incremental shipments</keyword> during the period. As per the industry data, passenger vehicle exports in the 2020-21 fiscal stood at 4,04,397 units. It rose to 5,77,875 units in the 2021-22 fiscal year and to 6,62,703 units in 2022-23 financial year. Last fiscal, exports stood at 6,72,105 units, an increase of 2,67,708 units since 2020-21. In the last three fiscal years, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> has accounted for 70 per cent of the incremental 2,67,708 units across the industry which were shipped to overseas markets. The auto major's export shipment increased by 1,85,774 units between FY21 and FY24. When contacted, <keyword id="21223168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki-india-executive" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki India Executive</keyword> Officer Corporate Affairs Rahul Bharti said that factors like addition of more models, adherence to global production standards and tie-up with Toyota have helped in ramping up the exports' volume. He noted that the company is currently exporting models to around 100 nations across the globe. Top overseas markets for the company currently are South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Chile and Mexico. Other major markets include the Philippines, Indonesia and Ivory Coast. MSI exports models like Baleno, Dzire, Swift, S-Presso, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Celerio and Ertiga. As per SIAM data, overall <keyword id="21991650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PV-exports" source="keywords">PV exports</keyword> stood at 6,72,105 units in FY24, an increase of 1.4 per cent over 6,62,703 units in FY2023. MSI exported 2,80,712 units last fiscal, an increase of 10 per cent over 2,55,439 units in FY23. NEW DELHI: <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India Ltd (MSIL) has appointed two local investment bankers — Kotak Mahindra Capital and Axis Capital — as the company seeks to persuade minority investors to back a controversial plan that calls for the carmaker's proposed Gujarat factory to be set up by parent <keyword id="200508" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suzuki-Motor-Corp-">Suzuki Motor Corp.</keyword> 
 Maruti <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword>'s manufacturing will be contracted to the plant in a practice that some experts say is unusual for the industry. The move has been opposed by some shareholders who believe it will undermine the Indian unit and divert income to the parent. 
 
Maruti Suzuki is seeking minority shareholder approval under Section 188 of the Companies Act for the special resolution related to the plan. It needs the support of at least three-fourths of its public shareholders to get the proposal passed, which in effect means a bloc with an 11% stake can block the resolution. 
 <keyword id="111052" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suzuki-Motor">Suzuki Motor</keyword> owns a 56.21% stake in MSIL, with the rest being held by the public. The investment bankers won't have any role in trying to sway investors, a Maruti Suzuki spokesperson said by email. They "have not been appointed to convince the institutional investors — domestic or foreign — to vote in favour of the Gujarat project structure," he said. That's being done by a Maruti Suzuki team led by chairman RC Bhargava and managing director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa, he said. 
 
"The investment bankers are required to identify the investors in various parts of the world, arrange the meetings with them and the necessary logistical support. They are also involved in discussions with MSIL in finalizing the presentations and strategy for the discussions," he said. 
 
The margin of victory needed to get the plan approved came in for some questioning. "The new law requires that the proposal be passed by a special resolution. It is not clear why 26% of minority shareholders should be able to override 74% of minority shareholders in a vote where the promoter is not voting," the spokesperson said. 
 
After strong concerns were raised by domestic institutional investors over the issue, all eyes are now on Life Insurance Corp. (LIC) of India that owns a 6.63% stake in Maruti Suzuki. Domestic mutual funds, which together own a 6.16% stake in Maruti Suzuki, have already opposed the plan. 
 
In case LIC joins hands with them, the combined holding of those against the move would cross 12%, enough to block the resolution. "Given the stance taken by LIC in the case of Cairn India depositing $1.25 billion (Rs 7,500 crore) with its parent Sesa Sterlite, there is all likelihood that the largest Indian institutional investor is likely to oppose the proposal," said the head of one of the mutual funds. 
 
Maruti Suzuki pointed out that the objections by the domestic funds predate changes to the plan. "The letter was written before the March modifications to the original structure," the spokesperson said. "After the March modifications, no one has written to us conveying any concerns about the proposal." 
 
A senior LIC official, who didn't want to be named, said, "LIC has always worked to protect the interests of investors and this case will not be any different." Some believe the state-owned insurer may not oppose the plan. "The feedback we have received that it would support the proposed structure," said another mutual fund head. 
 Incidentally, Suzuki Motor chairman Osamu Suzuki met Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> last week. Mutual fund representatives said the appointment of investment bankers is also aimed at gauging the pulse of investors. In case they're not able to convince more than three-fourths of public shareholders, Maruti Suzuki may revisit its plan to seek shareholder approval. 
 
The next annual general meeting is set for September 4, but the proposal is not on the agenda. "We would not be ready for the vote on this matter by September 4, as we would not have completed our meetings with all investors in India and abroad," said the spokesperson. 
 
The resolution will be taken up at a later time. "The company plans to have a separate shareholders' meeting sometime later this year, which will be contingent upon the ongoing exercise to bring large investors on its side," said a fund manager. 
 
If the Maruti Suzuki plan goes ahead, it could set a precedent. Many promoters of listed companies would prefer to follow the same route that will result in destroying shareholder value, said a senior executive at an insurance company. 
 
"This opens up the door to every single promoter converting their listed company into a marketing arm. Will they now set up manufacturing outfits as 100% owned entities that sell through the listed company?" said Amit Tandon, CEO of Institutional Investor Advisory Services. "On what basis will companies be valued? And where does this end?" 
 
In March, a group of 19 leading domestic institutional investors that includes HDFC Mutual Fund, Birla Sun Life, ICICI Prudential, Reliance Mutual Fund, UTI SBI Mutual Fund and Axis Bank Mutual Fund among others wrote to Maruti Suzuki raising serious concern over the transaction. 
 
"As a policy, we don't comment on market rumours or speculations, hence we would not like to comment on this," said an Axis Bank official. Kotak did not reply to ET's queries. Under the proposed transaction, Suzuki Motor plans to set up the Gujarat project as part of its whollyowned subsidiary, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt (SMG), which in turn will enter into an exclusive long-term contract manufacturing agreement with Maruti Suzuki. 
 
The contract manufacturing agreement would initially be for 15 years and will be automatically extended for a further 15 unless the parties mutually agree to terminate it. 
 
Maruti Suzuki said this would allow it to save on the investment required for setting up the plant to the extent of the equity investment made by Suzuki Motor in SMG. However, the fund managers said Maruti Suzuki is a debt-free company with cash and investments worth Rs 8,000 crore, which earns less than 10% annually, compared with the 20% return on equity. 
 
"Why should idle money not be invested in equity with clear visibility of business," said a fund manager. Maruti Suzuki is confident of gaining the support of stakeholders. "We believe that the financial benefits to minority shareholders are so obvious and large, that the vote would support the proposed structure," the spokesperson said.

A crowd favorite, the Baleno will be the first vehicle to be cross-badged between the two companies. In the first year, somewhere between 20,000 to 25,000 Maruti Suzuki Balenos will be shipped off to the Toyota Motor Corporation. Once Toyota has the cars, they will be selling them through their own dealership network starting Q1 of FY 2018-19. Their respective competitive advantages are complimentary in nature but might not be enough to solve the dilemma of how successful cross-badging will be in India. What is cross-badging? To cross-badge a car essentially means launching the same car under a different brand with some minor alterations that are, more often than not, only superficial. Even with the Baleno, plans indicate that the car will undergo some interior and exterior changes that could include alterations to the head lights, tail lamps and the front grill of the car. But, here’s the thing, cross-badging isn’t a concept that India is familiar with and past projects have performed the usual humdrum way. And, the Baleno isn’t the end of the road for Toyota either. The company has plans of launching Suzuki’s Brezza under their brand as well while Suzuki will introduce the Corolla under their banner. Mutual benefits This partnership utilises the <keyword id="1700148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competitive-Advantage">competitive advantage</keyword> of each company in a complementary manner. It’s essentially <keyword id="1673374" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ricardo">Ricardo</keyword>’s trade theory playing out in real life where one entity trades its most efficient product against its counterpart’s most efficient product. David Ricardo developed the classical theory of comparative advantage in 1817 to explain why countries engage in international trade even when one country's workers are more efficient at producing every single good than workers in other countries. While Toyota has the hang of the executive sedan segment, they haven’t had much luck in the lower-end of the market. And the opposite is true for Maruti Suzuki. It’s not that Toyota hasn’t tried. The Etios was their attempt at cracking India’s most high-volume segment of <keyword id="6381299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobiles">automobiles</keyword>, but alas, the car wasn’t able to make a substantial mark. And, this isn’t only true with India. Toyota may be on the track to become to world’s third largest automobile player with investments all over the globe but they’re yet to capitalise in the densest markets around the world. With the Baleno and the Brezza, Toyota will have another shot at making an impact in the competitive hatchback segment of automobiles in India. More than dominating the market on product alone, economics of scale will also come into play once Suzuki starts manufacturing the Baleno from Toyota’s plant in Karnataka by repurposing the currently unutilised capacity of the hub. And it’s not that Suzuki will get the short end of stick. More than using the Corolla to further expand their market share in the executive sedan segment, Toyota’s pool of knowledge, when it comes to electrical vehicles (EVs), holds greater utility for the company. In the past, a similar partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki didn’t yield any results. Partnerships have were also pursued between Volkswagen and Tata as well as Mahindra and Ford without substantial outcomes. On the other hand, the Renault and Nissan alliance brought about the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano SUVs. Even the partnership between Volkswagen and Skoda yielded the Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid. All these cars did decently well in this country. The Suzuki and Toyota partnership can thus work either way, we’ll have to wait and watch.
