But what does this mean for Indian companies and consumers? What is this jazz about premiumization all about? Is it just urban India that’s riding this wave, or has rural India also joined the bandwagon? We decode for you. <h2>What's premium, really?</h2>Imagine you’re eating Pav Bhaji at a roadside thela. Later during the day, you decide to dine out at a fancy, upmarket cafe, only to find Pav Bhaji Fondue on the menu. Same same, but much more expensive—often 5 to 10 times higher—for a little more hygiene and some better ambience! Think of premium products as this fondue. They are a notch up your regular, daily-use products soaps or shampoos, and even cars, all packaged luxuriously, offering just about the right touch of quality. The main differentiator, though, would be the price range. <h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. And companies are cashing in on this sentiment like never before. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade. Take cars, for instance. Indians are no longer vying for a good old <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> 800 or <keyword id="20400567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alto" source="keywords">Alto</keyword>, traditionally known for their healthy mileage, but are rather happy investing in more swanky features that come along with high-end cars. In October 2024, India’s largest car manufacturer, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, sold 65,948 units of its compact cars like Swift, WagonR, Dzire, and more. Compared to the year-ago period, which saw sales of 80,662 units, this was an 18% dip. But take a look at their SUV (sport utility vehicle) sales for the same period. Cars like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara sold about 70,644 units, a 19% uptick from the sales made in October 2023, i.e. 59,147 units. Simply put, when it comes to cars, Indians are saying the bigger, the better! The same is true for India's second biggest automobile manufacturer, Hyundai. Its SUV lineup made up a staggering 68.2% of the firm's total sales made for October 2024. What's more, SUV demand remained largely consistent across urban and rural markets. <h2>Consumers are inching up</h2>FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) are also riding the premiumization wave, with Indians prioritizing their health and wellness and not bothered about dishing out a few extra bucks for the same! You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones. And it's not just about daily-use products; Indians are also taking their celebrations a step over. Spirits manufacturer <keyword id="20125704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radico-khaitan" source="keywords">Radico Khaitan</keyword> highlighted that for the first half of 2024, their prestige &amp; above segment made for 88.4% of its net sales value. In the same period, the regular popular segment accounted for just 9.1% of their net sales. From Hindustan Unilever, which saw its premium products grow 30% over the last quarter, to <keyword id="20521971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="keywords">Kingfisher</keyword> beer's parent company, <keyword id="20124009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-breweries" source="keywords">United Breweries</keyword>, whose premium product sales volume jumped by 27% during the quarter as opposed to just a 5% rise in overall volumes, everyone is seemingly taking their lifestyle a notch above. Per the Nielsen report, in 2024, a typical global consumer spends about $13.7k per year. This is set to grow by around 2.4% to $14k as early as next year. Even a report by Goldman Sachs also highlighted a similar trend, noting that India’s affluent class, or those earning over $10,000 (Rs 8,42,694.97), is set to reach 100 million in the next 3 years. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products! <h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year. <h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024. During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. But it's all sunny and shiny in the mid-premium (priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 60,000). Sales growth has burgeoned by as much as 27% and 86% in these categories, respectively. As India continues its march toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027, the premium party is just getting started. Industry experts predict that premium segments will grow faster than you can say "sustainable organic handcrafted artisanal batch of coffee." Maruti Suzuki's Epic New Swift S-CNG launched, price starts from Rs 8,19,500

As per the industry data, passenger vehicle exports in the 2020-21 fiscal stood at 4,04,397 units. It rose to 5,77,875 units in the 2021-22 fiscal year and to 6,62,703 units in 2022-23 financial year. Last fiscal, exports stood at 6,72,105 units, an increase of 2,67,708 units since 2020-21. In the last three fiscal years, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> has accounted for 70 per cent of the incremental 2,67,708 units across the industry which were shipped to overseas markets. The auto major's export shipment increased by 1,85,774 units between FY21 and FY24. When contacted, <keyword id="21223168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki-india-executive" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki India Executive</keyword> Officer Corporate Affairs Rahul Bharti said that factors like addition of more models, adherence to global production standards and tie-up with Toyota have helped in ramping up the exports' volume. He noted that the company is currently exporting models to around 100 nations across the globe. Top overseas markets for the company currently are South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Chile and Mexico. Other major markets include the Philippines, Indonesia and Ivory Coast. MSI exports models like Baleno, Dzire, Swift, S-Presso, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Celerio and Ertiga. As per SIAM data, overall <keyword id="21991650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PV-exports" source="keywords">PV exports</keyword> stood at 6,72,105 units in FY24, an increase of 1.4 per cent over 6,62,703 units in FY2023. MSI exported 2,80,712 units last fiscal, an increase of 10 per cent over 2,55,439 units in FY23. Rival Hyundai shipped 1,63,155 units in FY24 as compared with 1,53,019 units in FY23, an increase of 7 per cent.

Overall shipments stood at 11,92,577 units in the first quarter the current fiscal year, as compared with 10,32,449 units in the same period of the last fiscal. <keyword id="20163833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="passenger-vehicle" source="keywords">Passenger vehicle</keyword> exports stood at 1,80,483 units in the first quarter, registering a jump of 19 per cent over 1,52,156 units in the same period last year. <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India led the space with shipments of 69,962 units in the period under review. It exported 62,857 units in the first quarter of the 2023-24 fiscal. <keyword id="20190176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor" source="keywords">Hyundai Motor</keyword> India exported 42,600 units in the April-June period. Three-wheeler shipments, however, saw a drop of 3 per cent year-on-year to 71,281 units in the April-June period this year as against 73,360 units in the year-ago period. SIAM President SIAM Vinod Aggarwal said it is a good sign for the industry that exports have started doing well. "I think that's a very good sign that exports seem to have bottomed out, especially in the commercial vehicle segment... we have started seeing the growth from the first quarter this year," he noted. Till last year, there was a huge drop in the export volume of trucks and buses, he added. "But <keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword> has been good even for two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. We are very positive that exports have started to recover," Aggarwal said. Automobile exports from India had declined 5.5 per cent in FY24 due to the monetary crisis in various overseas markets. Overall exports stood at 45,00,492 units in the last fiscal year as compared with 47,61,299 units in FY23.

"The problem (chip shortage) is a global one..it could affect different models, different companies, different modules differently..all our efforts are to organise supplies through multiple sources," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti said in an analyst call. He noted that the company is working to do away with certain chips in some models/trims where the requirement is superfluous. "If there is a particular semiconductor in a particular variant of a model which is superfluous and not required..so we are removing all such needs so that our consumption is minimum. All such efforts are going on including negotiations at global scale. Having said that we are still vulnerable to supply side bottlenecks," Bharti noted. When asked about the company position in the ongoing fiscal, he said: "We do not have full year visibility but at least Q1 will be tough and broadly the uncertainty continues." Semiconductors are silicon chips that cater to control and memory functions in products ranging from automobiles, computers and cellphones to various other electronic items. The usage of semiconductors in the auto industry has gone up globally in recent times with new models coming with more and more electronic features such as bluetooth connectivity and driver-assist, navigation and hybrid-electric systems. Replying to a query, Bharti confirmed that the strong hybrid technology introduced in Grand Vitara could be launched in more models. "We have got a very positive response..we plan to bring it (strong hybrid) in more models also," he stated. On sales growth outlook for this fiscal, Bharti said industry body SIAM estimates the passenger vehicle industry to grow between 5-7 per cent. "Maruti Suzuki should grow well beyond this. So we would be better than the industry," he noted. MSI CFO Ajay Seth noted that the company has lined up Rs 8,000 crore capex in the current fiscal with capital set to go into the construction of the Sonipat plant, development of new models and annual maintenance of existing infrastructure. He noted that the company has strengthened its presence in the sports utility vehicle segment with Brezza and Grand Vitara thereby increasing its market share in the vertical. "Moving forward with Jimny and Fronx, the SUV portfolio of the company will be further strengthened. With this the company aims to secure a leadership position in the SUV segment," Seth said. He noted that the company believes in offering products and technologies which are relevant to the Indian market context.
