<ul class="summary-list"><li>Last month, the Fed joined a slew of central banks in easing monetary policy.</li><li>That's led the market to assume rates will fall to pre-pandemic lows, BofA's Bernard Mensah says.</li></ul>The Federal Reserve joined other central banks in easing monetary policy last month, but that doesn't mean rates are returning to ultra-low levels see in the years before the pandemic, Bank of America's Bernard Mensah said. Mensah, the bank's head of international operations, pointed to a range of factors that could boost inflation, like shifting supply chains, rising wages, and geopolitical risks."My instinct has been that all of those things add inefficiencies in the system, and as we're moving to a different, perhaps, type of globalization, that we might find that the underlying trend inflation rate is a little bit higher than before," Mensah said in a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg TV.Mensah's comments come amid a flurry of rate cuts from central banks in the US, China, the EU, England, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada and Mexico, among others.Those rate cuts have led the market to expect US interest rates will dip as low as they were before the pandemic, Mensah says."There are bits of the market that do assume that rates will trend back to where we were pre-COVID or soon after that," Mensah said. He adds that the terminal rate may actually be 150 basis points above that.Before the pandemic, in the decade following the Great Financial Crisis, interest rates remained at historical lows. However, as inflation soared, the Fed hiked its benchmark interest rate aggressively, initiating its first move to loosen monetary policy last month with a 50 basis point rate cut. Despite the Fed's apparent confidence that pricing pressures have eased, Mensah says a variety of inflationary risks will keep interest rates higher. "I personally have been worried just about the underlying inflationary pressures that are out there for a bunch of reasons, whether its COVID, whether its supply chain moves," he said.He also pointed to inflationary shocks like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/port-strike-could-wreck-us-economy-with-price-increases-scarcity-2024-10">US port strike</a>, which started on Tuesday and is expected to continue for weeks.Mensah says the port workers' wage demands, as well as increasing wages for workers around the world, add further inflationary pressure.Finally, he noted geopolitical risks, which he says have weakened the dollar's value as global markets have priced in new developments."I do think the market is trying to be alert to events that are happening on the horizon," Mensah said, adding there's been a dollar weakening versus the euro and British pound in broad foreign exchange markets."You can make some arguments for that. So I think the market is poised for challenges that are ahead," he said.Other analysts have also pointed to inflation risks from geopolitical conflicts.Last month, T. Rowe Price analyst Tomasz Wieladek said that even though trade openness has encouraged inflation stability, ongoing conflicts could mean globalization is at risk in the coming years. The country's largest carmaker, which could not produce around 1.7 lakh units last fiscal due to semiconductor shortage, is also coming up with measures to reduce the usage of certain kinds of chips in its cars. "The problem (chip shortage) is a global one..it could affect different models, different companies, different modules differently..all our efforts are to organise supplies through multiple sources," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti said in an analyst call. He noted that the company is working to do away with certain chips in some models/trims where the requirement is superfluous. "If there is a particular semiconductor in a particular variant of a model which is superfluous and not required..so we are removing all such needs so that our consumption is minimum. All such efforts are going on including negotiations at global scale. Having said that we are still vulnerable to supply side bottlenecks," Bharti noted. When asked about the company position in the ongoing fiscal, he said: "We do not have full year visibility but at least Q1 will be tough and broadly the uncertainty continues." Semiconductors are silicon chips that cater to control and memory functions in products ranging from automobiles, computers and cellphones to various other electronic items. The usage of semiconductors in the auto industry has gone up globally in recent times with new models coming with more and more electronic features such as bluetooth connectivity and driver-assist, navigation and hybrid-electric systems. Replying to a query, Bharti confirmed that the strong hybrid technology introduced in Grand Vitara could be launched in more models. "We have got a very positive response..we plan to bring it (strong hybrid) in more models also," he stated. On sales growth outlook for this fiscal, Bharti said industry body SIAM estimates the passenger vehicle industry to grow between 5-7 per cent. "Maruti Suzuki should grow well beyond this. So we would be better than the industry," he noted. MSI CFO Ajay Seth noted that the company has lined up Rs 8,000 crore capex in the current fiscal with capital set to go into the construction of the Sonipat plant, development of new models and annual maintenance of existing infrastructure. He noted that the company has strengthened its presence in the sports utility vehicle segment with Brezza and Grand Vitara thereby increasing its market share in the vertical. "Moving forward with Jimny and Fronx, the SUV portfolio of the company will be further strengthened. With this the company aims to secure a leadership position in the SUV segment," Seth said. He noted that the company believes in offering products and technologies which are relevant to the Indian market context. In fact, the president just signed <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/06/13/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-congressional-passage-of-ocean-shipping-reform-act/">the Ocean Reform Act</a>, which addressed late fees charged by carriers and terminals seeing astronomical profits. I think some of the things in the Rescue Plan specifically, were helping state and local governments stay solvent so they could provide services, helping Americans buy food and making that easier, helping consumer demand, and then a lot of help to small businesses through loans to try to keep the supply chain going. And then the vaccines were really instrumental in terms of getting the <keyword id="11893570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy" source="Orion">economy</keyword> back, with people participating and working in-store, which helps with the supply chain crunch as well.<div type="image" title="Biden Port of Los Angeles" height="683" width="1024" msid="92907027" hostid="261" sizebytes="33870"></div>How has the administration tackled the computer chip shortages that have been prevalent since the start of the pandemic?The president is fighting for legislation on the Hill that would really diversify where chips are supplied from. I think we've done a lot of partnering with other countries to try to make the supply chain more resilient.David Adelman, the former ambassador to Singapore, recently <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/21/former-us-ambassador-says-lifting-china-tariffs-could-cut-inflation.html">said</a> on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that cutting tariffs on imported Chinese goods might take 1 percent off inflation in the United States. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen last month <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/tariffs-give-us-leverage-in-talks-with-china-top-trade-official-says/6628967.html">said</a> that some tariffs on Chinese imports serve "no strategic purpose." Is the administration still mulling over any changes?What the president has asked us to do is to take an overall look at the tariff structure to make sure we have a more strategic approach with China. So really, we're addressing some of the real concerns we have with the Chinese, such as their non-market practices and economic coercion, and then looking at where things might not be as strategic and reconsidering tariffs in that regard. That is a process that's ongoing for the president's direction and we intend to complete it in the near future.What are some big misconceptions that people have about supply-chain issues in the United States?A lot of things are working well today. A lot of the disruptions from the pandemic have been ironed out and we're seeking to make more progress. And a lot of what today's actions are, is to prepare for the future. Under the USMCA, we put in place a mechanism for Mexico, Canada, and the United States to coordinate early in the event of an emergency and make sure we don't have disruptions to the flow of trade in the future.Are there any sort of new trade initiatives that would be enacted with Taiwan?We've always had ongoing talks with Taiwan. We have a TIFA [Trade and Investment Framework Agreement] with them. We recently launched the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade to try and address a number of issues that impact supply chain resiliency, including trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, and digital trade.What would you say are maybe one or two big long-term trade strategies that the administration will like to see implemented over the next four years?The initiative with Taiwan is really important. And then the other thing that we are really focused on right now is what we call our Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity. And that is designed to really <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/05/23/statement-on-indo-pacific-economic-framework-for-prosperity/">strengthen</a> our economic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. Thirteen countries have joined. Under the trade pillar, we will address everything from digital trade to labor, environment, agriculture, and a whole range of things.
