India’s biggest carmaker <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Marutis-financial-year-ends-well/articleshow/51648291.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">ended the last fiscal on a good note</a>, has decided to continue treading uphill, with plans of another year of double-digit growth. The reasons that support this decision could be the forecast of a good monsoon, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Government-salary-to-fund-bank-capitalisation/articleshow/51739719.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">seventh pay commission</a> for government employees, and declining fuel prices and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/RBI-decreased-repo-rate/articleshow/51699981.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">interest rates</a>. 
 
It was only a few days back that the auto maker had announced its decision to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ignis-and-Baleno-variant-launch/articleshow/51794151.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">add more cars</a> to its fleet. This determination is surely going to be a confidence booster for the automobile market of India. 
 
Because of this double-digit growth, the overall passenger vehicle market expanded 7% last fiscal, which would have been just 2-3% excluding Maruti’s numbers. 
 
Maruti is planning for a 9% increase in production and about 10-11% growth in domestic sales in this fiscal, as confirmed to ET by several vendors knowing the plan. These vendors are told the plans so that they can keep pace with the production schedule.

 When all car makers are going for a facelift of their popular cars, can <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> be far behind? After giving back to back successes with <keyword id="6379565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="baleno">Baleno</keyword> and Ciaz, India’s largest car producer went for a facelift of its popular product, <keyword id="6360068" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="swift">Swift</keyword>. Launched decades back, Swift has already experienced a facelift a few years back. 
 The 2017 <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> Swift has a radical exterior and a sporty interior, car experts claim. The car is expected to be launched in India late this year or early next year. 
 Look wise, the car stands out from its older generation. However the car is expected to be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engine as the current car. Built on the same platform of Baleno, the chassis will be a bit lighter and give an edge to the fuel economy that <keyword id="6912" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti">Maruti</keyword> is always known for. 
 
 
As the photos of new Swift started doing round in the internet, car experts and enthusiasts somehow felt the new Swift looks copied from other cars. 
 It’s not the first time that Maruti Suzuki is facing this allegation. When Alto 800, the low priced car of ambitious Indian middle class was launched in 2012, the car’s front bumper, headlights, and front grill resembled that of old <keyword id="6355174" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ford">Ford</keyword> Figo.

The slowdown in car sales is not unique to Maruti. Car sales in India fell 20.5% in September compared to a year earlier. Aside from the economic slump in India, car buyers have shied away from showrooms expecting duty cuts and lower prices as well as fearing a loss of value for their new cars when the new emission norms kick in next year. Suzuki just slashed its operating income forecast by 40% citing slower sales in India

Suzuki just lost nearly $2 billion in 2 days because of what’s happening in India

The undisputed champion in small-car market, <keyword id="6365618" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword>, is leaving no stone unturned to pierce mid-size and premium vehicles segment. For this, it is putting a new independent management structure and dealership in place to sell bigger cars, price between Rs 9 lakh and 10 lakh or above. 
 The mid-size segment is currently dominated by Japanese rivals <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Motor and <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> Motor and Maruti, which makes one in every two cars sold in India, is making more concerted efforts to enter the segment. 
 
Even though the company made many attempts in the past, it could not achieve much success. Maruti’s newest offering in the mid-size range, Ciaz, saw decent demand but it had to discontinue selling the Kizashi, a premium sedan it brought to India a few years ago, as it found very few buyers. 
 
As per reports by the Economic Times, merely 1-3% of Maruti's vehicle sales currently come from vehicles priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
Now, a fresh team, internally named NEXA, will aim at offering a different experience to customers. 
 
Partho Banerjee, Maruti's new Vice President for sales and dealer network, will head NEXA who will be supported by two zonal heads and eight regional heads. 
 
"Every year, our company reflects on the roadmap it intends to take. This new structure was decided last week by the company," a Maruti executive told ET. 
 
He added that just like Toyota has Lexus and Nissan has Infiniti as their luxury brands, Maruti Suzuki would have NEXA as its premium brand for vehicles priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
 
However, a Maruti spokesman declined to comment on "an internal company matter" but as per people once the new channel comes in, existing dealerships will not be able to sell cars which are priced above Rs 10 lakh. 
 
However, the present dealers have been given an option to open new NEXA outlets and Maruti is mulling to have at least 100 such outlets in the first 12-18 months, before expanding into the interiors of the country. Maruti presently has around 1,500 outlets. 
 
Meanwhile, the new outlets are likely to sell the upcoming crossover, globally called the S Cross, as well as 7-seater multipurpose and sport-utility vehicles Maruti plans to launch post-2018, people in the know told the financial daily. 
 
It is likely that Maruti may bring back Kizashi. 
 
"The company is likely to test the waters with the S Cross ... there are other models in the pipeline, which could be sold through these outlets, but they will depend on how the premium outlet model evolves," said one of people in the know. 
 
Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst at IHS Automotive, said the move pointed at Maruti and Japanese parent Suzuki Motor’s aspiration to move towards the premium segment. 
 
"This is a bold move on part of Maruti Suzuki to transition to a higher level. The initial response to the Ciaz shows that there are takers for Maruti Suzuki in Rs 10 lakh range ...Having said that, it will be a challenging task for Maruti Suzuki to sustain this imagery over Rs 10 lakh,” he told ET. 
 
Another person who closely tracks the company said Maruti and its dealers may invest in personnel and training and the dealerships may have to hire executives from the hospitality or aviation industry for the NEXA outlets, to give different experience to customers.

<keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> Motor’s Indian arm <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> is going to develop a new generation <keyword id="6412620" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alto">Alto</keyword> and strengthen its hold in the entry-car space. 
 Alto’s share dropped nearly to 40% -48% with the launch of <keyword id="43777" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Renault">Renault</keyword> Kwid. Kwid, however, has been able to gain almost 20% of the segment sales. The average monthly sales of the Alto have come down to 19,000-20,000 from 21,500 in the last fiscal year. 
 
 As per the sources, the company has started working on the project which internally is being called Y1K. The <keyword id="3734807" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-generation-Alto">new-generation Alto</keyword> is most likely to be launched by the festive season of 2019. The car will be the most expressive Alto anyone has ever seen and may even sport a crossover deign, they said. 
 
As the car will be engineered and made in India, it will be tailored as per the Indian market need. 
 
"While the company has made strong headway in the premium end of the market with the Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Ciaz, it will never lose sight of its bread-and-butter segment ... as the largest carmaker, Maruti needs to have a solid option for the prospective buyer and Y1K is an initiative on that front,” a person in Maruti Suzuki asking anonymity, told ET. 
 
The new-generation Alto will be engineered and designed based on a new platform so as to meet new regulations. "The hardware and technology will come from Suzuki, the putting together of hardware - that is design, engineering and validation will be all done by the Indian team with local inputs” a second person told ET. A Maruti spokesperson said as a policy, the company does not comment on future product plans. 
 
Maruti has lost share in the entry A car space, but has been expanding the share B segment, priced between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 12 lakh and led by the new Baleno, Ciaz and Brezza. 
 
Maruti is most likely to revamp its WagonR hatchback and Celrio tool in the next three years as part of its plan to launch 15 new products by 2020.
