If these measures are implemented, the number of investors could decrease, it added. Moreover, discount brokers, who depend heavily on retail investors, are expected to be more affected than traditional full-service brokers. SEBI, in its consultation paper in July, proposed seven measures, including increasing minimum contract size and upfront collection of option premiums, intra-day monitoring of position limits, rationalisation of strike prices, removal of calendar spread benefit on expiry day and increase in near contract expiry margin. SEBI stated that these measures are aimed at enhancing <keyword id="20775670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-protection" source="keywords">investor protection</keyword> and promoting <keyword id="20813757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-stability" source="keywords">market stability</keyword> in derivative markets. According to a report by Jefferies, SEBI's proposed measures to reduce the number of weekly option contracts from 18 to 6 could impact around 35% of industry premiums. However, if trading shifts to the remaining contracts, the overall impact can be reduced to 20-25%. Among its 7 proposed measures, IIFL Securities see the highest impact from the withdrawal of <keyword id="22353333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weekly-options" source="keywords">weekly options</keyword> (only 1 per exchange allowed) as index Options account for 98% of the volumes. IIFL Securities expects the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to be more affected than the BSE because 60 % of NSE's revenue comes from options trading, compared to 40% for BSE. It estimates that by the financial year 2026, NSE's earnings could be reduced by 25-30% while BSE's earnings could drop by 15-18%. Jefferies also believes that the removal of Bankex weekly contract can impact BSE's earnings per share (EPS) by 7-9% over FY25-27. It further said that BSE might see a small decline in earnings, but if trading activity shifts from discontinued products, it could offset the impact or even lead to earnings growth. "We don't see any impact on MCX from these regulations. Within the value chain, discount brokers are likely to be more impacted than traditional full-service brokers given the former's dependence on retail investors," IIFL Securities said. Jefferies believes that clearing members like Nuvama, which caters to institutional players High-Frequency Traders (HFTs), and Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) are less impacted. Rationalizing weekly options to only one benchmark index per exchange will significantly affect the NSE because it currently has four weekly index expiries, with "Bank Nifty" being the most important, contributing to 50 % of its options volume. The change could reduce NSE's overall trading volumes by 30-35 %, IIFL Securities said. On the other hand, BSE is expected to be less affected since it only has two contracts, with Sensex making up 85 % of its volumes in FY24. Even if "Bankex" contributes 30% by FY26, the impact on BSE's volumes is expected to be smaller compared to NSE, it said. Additionally, with just two expiries, BSE might gain market share and experience higher trading volumes, resulting in an estimated 20 % reduction in its overall volumes, it added. Jefferies said that SEBI's proposed measure of increasing lot sizes by 3-4 times over six months could lead to higher costs for retail traders, potentially reducing their participation in the market. The proposed margin increase for options sellers close to expiry could reduce leverage and profitability, especially for retail traders with limited funds. "Finally other measures like increasing ELM (extreme loss margin) around expiry, and withdrawal of calendar spread margin on expiry will increase the margin requirements and thereby could impact the liquidity. Based on our initial estimates we expect a 30-40 % impact on market volume," IIFL Securities said. SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch recently mentioned that households are losing up to Rs 60,000 crore a year in the problematic futures and options segment. Earlier, SEBI research showed retail traders lose money in nine out of 10 trades in the F&amp;O segment Last month, the government in the Union Budget raised the securities transaction tax (STT) on both futures and options trade from October 1 to allay concerns about hyperactive interest in the derivative segment. Before that, the Economic Survey flagged concerns over rising retail investors' interest in derivative trading. The survey stated that speculative trade has no place in a developing country. It also pointed out that the sharp increase in retail investor participation in F&amp;O trading is likely driven by humans' gambling instincts.

The debate on loan-to-deposit ratio (LD), particularly concerning sluggish <keyword id="19998084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposit-growth" source="keywords">deposit growth</keyword> and potential risks to <keyword id="20089808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-stability" source="keywords">financial stability</keyword> is raised by even the finance minister and the <keyword id="20151998" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-governor" source="keywords">RBI governor</keyword>. However, the report notes that on closer examination, the situation may not be as alarming as it seems. As of 9th August, 2024 the Indian <keyword id="19964544" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banking-sector" source="keywords">banking sector</keyword>'s loan-to-deposit (LD) ratio stood at 77.2 %, which is slightly below its recent peak of 78.2 % on 22nd March 2024, and its all-time high of 78.8 % in September 2013. The report stated that typically a rising LD ratio is indicative of a tightness in the banking sector, potentially indicating overheating. A lower LD indicates that the bank is aggressive in its credit disbursement practises, which could be risky. It highlighted that an analysis of the sector's transactions with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF), along with recent trends in the weighted average call rate (WACR), suggests that the current rise in the LD ratio does not indicate tightness, which is why there is no immediate cause of concern. In fact, the report added that the concern over weak deposit growth may be overstated. Historical data show that bank deposits grew at an average rate of 9.5 % during the pre-COVID period (January 2015 to February 2020) and 10.4 % in the post-COVID period (March 2020 to August 2024). Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also urged state-run banks to enhance deposit mobilization through attractive offers and focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Loan-to-deposit ratio pegs the total deposits received by the bank against the loans it has offered. It helps in understanding how liquid the bank is. The loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) is a financial metric that compares a bank's total loans to its total deposits. It's used to assess a bank's liquidity and credit risk, and to inform lending and deposit-taking decisions The report said while the exact measures are unclear, the deposit growth could potentially be increased by making other asset classes less attractive through taxation or interest rates, or by boosting fiscal spending to increase net credit to the government. In its forecast, the report noted that private banks will witness a moderation in their <keyword id="19998083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-growth" source="keywords">credit growth</keyword>, while public sector banks will maintain a healthy credit growth rate. "Our analysis suggests that deposit growth could be raised by either making other asset classes unattractive (through taxation and/or interest rate) or increasing the growth in net credit to the government by pushing fiscal spending higher" the report added. Alternatively, policymakers might consider curtailing loan growth to lower the LD ratio. However, this could slow deposit growth, particularly if corporate credit growth remains weak. Encouraging savers to shift investments from other assets to bank deposits could also be an option, but this carries risks of overreach and potential damage to economic confidence. Das had also flagged the excessive growth, or froth developing in the personal loan space. Notably, while credit growth in unsecured personal loans like credit cards continues to decline, it remains elevated at 23.3% as of June 2024. However, this is a significant reduction from 34.2% witnessed in November 2023. As fiscal spending increases, bank credit to the government is likely to grow, which should elevate deposits and broad money supply. The report said "However, the extent of foreign capital inflows and the RBI's policy for managing these inflows remain uncertain". Last month, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das had also addressed this issue in the 50th meeting of MPC (Monetary Policy Committee). Per him, deposit mobilisation has been lagging credit growth for some time now. This may potentially expose the system to structural liquidity issues. "While there could be a debate regarding ‘deposits funding loans’ vis-à-vis ‘loans funding deposits’, the current regulatory concern stems from the fact that there could be structural changes happening which banks need to recognise and, accordingly, devise their strategies. Households and consumers who traditionally leaned on banks for parking or investing their savings are increasingly turning to capital markets and other financial intermediaries", Das said. Per him, while bank deposits continue to remain dominant as a percentage of financial assets owned by households, their share has been declining consistently, since households are now increasingly allocating their savings to mutual funds, insurance funds, pension funds and other avenues.

Strategists from Goldman Sachs, UBS, BMO, and Deutsche Bank have raised their year-end price targets on the S&amp;P 500 in recent weeks as the benchmark index continues to hit record highs. On Monday, it notched its 46th all-time high of 2024. UBS strategists Jonathan Golub and Patrick Palfrey upped their 5,600 price target to 5,850 for the end of the year, marking their fourth upgrade since late last year.The target is just slightly above the level the index is trading at on Wednesday, but the analysts forecast a 9% rise in the next 15 months and raised their target for 2025 from 6,000 to 6,400 in a note on Tuesday. Earlier this month, meanwhile, Goldman Sachs raised its target on the index to 6,000 by December, marking the fourth increase since late last year. The call, from the firm's chief equity strategist David Kostin, is the second highest among those tracked by Bloomberg.Kostin said the estimates were driven by a steady macro outlook and greater margin expansion."The primary driver of the upward revision to our 2025 EPS estimate is greater margin expansion," Kostin said, adding, "The macro backdrop remains conducive to modest margin expansion, with prices charged outpacing input cost growth."Kostin's price target is just behind that of BMO's chief equity strategist, Brian Belski, who raised his forecast from 5,600 to 6,100 last month. Belski's new target implies a nearly 5% gain through the rest of this year.Belski said his upgrade was based on strong market gains so far this year, which he says typically leads to stronger-than-normal gains in the fourth quarter."We continue to be surprised by the strength of market gains and decided yet again that something more than an incremental adjustment was warranted," Belski said in a note.He added that Federal Reserve easing and a broadening market rally will only help fuel further gains.Deutsche Bank also raised its year-end target for the S&amp;P 500 last month, up to 5,750 from 5,500. The bank's strategists pointed to strong corporate earnings and inflows, rising stock buybacks, and higher risk sentiment."We see S&amp;P 500 earnings growth continuing to run robustly in the low double digits, in line with typical growth rates outside of recessions," the strategists said in a note.The strategists' target raises come amid a chorus of strategists turning decidedly more upbeat on the market. In early Wednesday trading, the Indian rupee slid 14 paise to hit an all-time low of 84.23 per US dollar, weighed down by continued outflows of foreign funds and a robust US dollar in global markets. Forex analysts highlighted the volatility stemming from the ongoing US elections, suggesting that stability could return once results are clear in this close race. The US Federal Reserve is also on the radar, with an anticipated interest rate cut this week and a projected easing of up to 100 basis points by 2025. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at its historic low of 84.23 against the dollar, down from its previous close of 84.09. On Tuesday, the currency had ended slightly stronger, gaining 2 paise. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which tracks the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies, climbed 1.64% to 105.11. According to Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors, the index rose following initial election results showing former President Trump ahead, with the Republican party also leading in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The global oil market saw movement as Brent crude prices dipped 0.98%, trading at USD 74.79 per barrel. Bhansali noted that the rupee’s trajectory will heavily depend on the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) response, particularly as the currency fluctuates with real-time election outcomes. He estimated an intra-day trading range between 84.00 and 84.35. On the domestic front, Indian stock markets showed positive trends. The Sensex climbed by 390.93 points (0.49%) to reach 79,867.56, while the Nifty rose by 135.60 points (0.56%) to 24,348.90. Despite these gains, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Tuesday, pulling out Rs 2,569.41 crore from the capital markets, as per stock exchange data. Rupee hits record low of 84.23 against US dollar amidst US elections 2024

The IPO (initial public offer) of food and grocery delivery behemoth Swiggy is set to open tomorrow and conclude on November 8, 2024. The entire issue is worth Rs 11,327.43 crore and has a fresh issue component of Rs 4,499 crore and an OFS (offer for sale) of about Rs 6,828.43 crore. With a price band of Rs 371-390, retail investors will be required to invest a minimum of Rs 14,820 to get their hands on Swiggy's shares. Swiggy, which will tentatively list on the bourses on November 13, 2024, is seeking to raise Rs 1,952.43 crore more than its rival <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, which went public in July 2021 and was looking to raise Rs 9,375 crore. Zomato's offer was oversubscribed around 38.25 times, with retail investors subscribing 7.45x to the issue. Notably, only around 15% of Swiggy's total issue will be made available to retail investors. Moreover, Swiggy's IPO is not garnering the same buzz if its present GMP (<keyword id="938640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grey-market-premium" source="Orion">grey market premium</keyword>) trends are to be believed. The company's last traded GMP was Rs 7, taking its estimated listing price to Rs 397 (upper end of its price band, i.e., Rs 390 + Rs 7), and its potential listing gains per share at a minimal 1.79%. Last week, Swiggy's GMP was at Rs 25, before tumbling to Rs 18, and then momentarily stabilizing at Rs 22 before its steep fall to present levels of Rs 7. <h2>Strengths and weaknesses</h2> Since its inception in 2014, Swiggy's bottom line has been in red, unlike that of its rival Zomato, which turned profitable in the first quarter of FY24. In FY22, its total income was Rs. 6119.78 crore with a net loss of Rs. 3628.90 crore. While the company's total income increased to Rs. 8714.45 crore in FY23, it also spelled a corresponding rise in its net losses, which surged to Rs. 4179.31 crore. The trend varied a little in FY24 when Swiggy's total income rose to Rs 11,634.35 crore while its net loss reduced to Rs. 2,350.24 crore. However, in the first quarter of FY25, ending June 30, 2024, the company's total income stood at Rs 3,310.11 crore and a net loss of Rs. 611.01 crore. While Swiggy did achieve 42.4% revenue growth between FY2022-223, most of its revenue is sourced from the top 50 of the 500 Indian cities it is currently operational in. Even in this regard, Zomato, which operates in around 1,000 cities across India, has an edge. <h2>Some say invest, some say avoid</h2> Some experts are advising against subscribing to this IPO. Per SAMCO Securities, "As of FY 2024, Swiggy Limited continues to operate at a loss, in contrast to its competitor, Zomato Limited, which has recently achieved profitability. Given Swiggy’s current financial position, competitive pressures, associated risks, and valuation, its IPO appears overvalued. Therefore, investors should avoid this IPO until the company’s financial performance and growth outlook improve. Waiting until Swiggy demonstrates improved financial results and a clearer path to sustainable growth would be a more prudent investment approach. Per Bajaj Broking's IPO note, Swiggy's IPO can be subscribed to from a long-term perspective. However, it also highlights that Swiggy's offer document is missing PAT (profit after tax) and RoCE (returns on capital employed) data. "For the last three fiscals, the company has reported an average EPS of Rs - (14.90) and an average RoNW of - (35.39%). The issue is priced at a P/BV of 11.60 based on its NAV of Rs. 33.61 as of June 30, 2024, and is at a P/BV of 7.31 based on its post-IPO NAV of Rs. 53.36 per share (at upper cap). If we attribute annualized FY25 earnings to a post-IPO fully diluted equity base, then the asking price is at a negative P/E, and based on FY24 earnings also, it is at a negative P/E, as the company has posted losses for those periods. On other parameters, the issue appears aggressively priced," it further adds. Gaurav Garg, research analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, notes that it might take some time for Swiggy to reach Zomato's level, both in terms of valuation and AOV (average order value). Swiggy's valuation has been pegged at about Rs 95,000 crore, at the upper price band, while Zomato has a market valuation of Rs 2.13 lakh crore. "Almost 50% valuation compared to Zomato gives some comfort, although it should not be considered an arbitrage in valuation. If Swiggy’s EBITDA catches up to 3-4% in the food delivery business, which is currently at 1%, and Average Order Value (AOV) improves to Rs. 550-600 levels in quick commerce with a higher non-grocery share, we can see bridging in the valuation gap. However, this should not be expected in the near term," he adds.

As of 2:45 pm today, <keyword id="19895974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="waaree" source="keywords">Waaree</keyword>'s stock was trading at Rs 2,356.20, down by 5.75% on NSE, while on BSE, the stock was trading at Rs 2,358.20, down by as much as 7.76%. On the financial front, Waaree has also been posting steady numbers over the past few years. Its PAT (<keyword id="20298212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profit-after-tax" source="keywords">profit after tax</keyword>) jumped from Rs 79.65 crore in FY22 to Rs 500.28 crore in FY23 and Rs 1,274.38 crore in FY24. The company also boasts a healthy PAT margin of 11.47%. The company exports to almost 68 countries, and as of June 30, 2024, had a capacity of 12 GW for manufacturing solar PV modules. Notably, Waaree is India's largest producer of solar PV (photovoltaic) modules. Shivani Nyati, Head of Wealth, Swastika Investmart Ltd., notes that the company made a strong debut on the bourses, reflecting investor confidence in the company's growth potential and financial stability. "Investors may consider booking part profits here, and those who want to hold it for the long term may keep a stoploss of 2,000", she noted. In a media interaction today, Amit Paithankar, CEO of Waaree Energies, noted that currently, demand is extremely robust, with the policy framework helping the same. "We have been growing our margins, which now stand at 15%. Of course, in the next two years, we see them evolve at a higher level. All of that taken together, we are looking at robust margins going forward of about 200 basis points," he added.

Food delivery and quick-commerce behemoth Swiggy's initial public offering (IPO) closes for subscription today. The issue has already been subscribed about 213% as of 1:35 pm today. The offer garnered massive interest from QIB (qualified institutional buyers), who subscribed 3.46x to it, bidding for 30,09,09,954 shares as against 8,69,23,475 shares allotted for them. The company will tentatively list on both BSE and NSE on November 13, 2024. Swiggy's employees also gave the IPO a thumbs-up, subscribing 1.42x to the offer. Around 7,50,000 shares were reserved for employees in the IPO, at a discount of Rs 25 to the issue price. On the other hand, retail investors subscribed to 99% of their potion. At the same time, the NII (non-institutional category) fetched a muted response, with investors subscribing to only 25% of shares in their category. <h2>Dull GMP</h2> Pre-IPO, Swiggy had also lapped up Rs 5,085 crore from anchor investors. With a price band of Rs 371-390, the company is looking to raise Rs 11,327 crore from the IPO. Out of this, the fresh issue component is worth Rs 4,499 crore, and the offer for sale (OFS) is Rs 6,828 crore. Investors can expect dampened listing day gains, going by the trends in the GMP (grey market premium) market. The company's last-traded GMP was at a mere Rs 1, taking the estimated listing price to Rs 391 (upper end of the price band at Rs 390 + GMP), which means that the potential gain per share would be a minuscule 0.26%. Per InCred Equities, the IPO can be subscribed to since the company has favorable scale and potential to tap in long-term opportunities. Quick commerce provides growth runaway, while the food delivery vertical has the potential to improve the margin and cash flow going ahead. Per the company's Q1FY25 earnings report, it generates 47% of revenue from the food delivery business and 39% from its supply chain and distribution business (operated via Scootsy Logistics Private Limited). About 12% of the company's revenue comes from its quick commerce wing i.e. Instamart, while Dineout (eating out) and platform innovations make up about 1% each of the revenue. "Swiggy’s IPO price band implies 1) EV/revenue multiple of ~6.5x, 2) EV/GOV of ~2.1x, and 3) a P/S of ~6.7x based on annualized FY25F financials. The valuation is at a discount to Zomato, which trades at an EV/revenue multiple of ~11.3x, an EV/GOV of ~3.2x (annualized), and a P/S of ~11.4x based on FY25F consensus estimates. Internal controls, as reflected in the auditor’s qualified opinion, and increased competitive intensity are the key downside risks, in our view," InCred further adds. Notably, in FY23 and FY24, auditors raised concerns over loans given to subsidiaries, namely Supr Infotech and Scootsy which may impact Swiggy's overall financial stability. Some of the qualifications highlighted by the auditors include potential impairment, interest payment delay, and using new loans to cover interest costs.

Indian markets under pressure as global rate cuts stir uncertainty, new report says

Global markets are looking ahead to the US Fed's meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 7, 2024, expecting the Jerome Powell-chaired FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) to slash interest rates further by 0.25%. In September this year, the Fed surprised the markets by cutting interest rates by a massive 0.5%, for the first time in 4 years. As per the <keyword id="23807624" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CME-Fed-Watch-Tool" source="keywords">CME Fed Watch Tool</keyword>, there is now a 99.5% chance that the Fed will reduce the interest rates by around 25 basis points, bringing it within the range of 4.5% to 4.75%. Only 0.5% believe that the Fed might leave the rates unchanged, within their present range of 4.75% to 5%. As for the Fed's December meeting, scheduled for December 18, per the CME Fed Watch tool, 79.5% believe that interest rates would be in the range of 4.25% to 4.5%. Another 20.4% believe that yields will remain in the range of 4.5% and 4.75%. Only 0.1% see the interest rates staying within their current range of 4.75% to 5% <h2>No major changes anticipated</h2>However, it is unlikely that this quarter-point rate cut would bring about any significant financial changes in the US economy. The Fed is again expected to bring down the interest rates by another 25 basis points in their December meeting. This would imply a total rate cut of about 50 basis points by the end of this year. So, why is the Fed not bringing down interest rates by 50 basis points in one fell swoop this time around? Why wait till December to bring down the rates by another 25 basis points? Experts believe that it could stoke inflation, which has seen a sharp decline in the recent past. A steep slash of borrowing rates could accelerate borrowing activity and inject significant cash into the economy at once, pushing up inflation. Per the Fed's recent projections, a total of 4 rate cuts are anticipated in 2025. On a YoY basis, inflation in the US dipped to 2.4%, close to the Fed's target of 2%. With inflationary pressures reined in, the economy growing at the rate of 2.8% during the third quarter of FY24, and the unemployment rate down to 4.1%, the markets see much merit in bringing interest rates down. This is especially important to boost spending, particularly in sectors such as housing and automobiles, where even a slight tinkering in interest rates can drastically impact the amount and volume of loans taken to own them. Data suggests that during Trump's presidency tenure, i.e., between 2017 and 2021, inflation averaged at a rate of 1.9% a year. During the Biden administration, where Kamala Harris served as VP, the inflation is on track to average around 5% a year. Shrisha Acharya, Vice President, Anand Rathi Global Finance, also notes that the results of the impending US elections, which are likely to be declared tomorrow, will impact the yields and stock markets. "The Trump card, coupled with potential Republican control, could mean higher bond yields due to anticipated increases in deficit spending, inflation risks, and potential tax cuts. This could very well jiggle the confidence in U.S. Treasury bonds and thus start a chain effect that will possibly impact global market stability and lead to short-term volatility. On the other hand, Harris’ rise has been met with a stock market rally glued on expectations of economic stability and controlled inflation, with more predictable fiscal policy likely to help in a soft landing," he explains.
