Smartphone shipments: Apple gains 34% market share in India as Samsung, Xiaomi decline

According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), the Indian smartphone market shipped 64 million units in the first half of 2023, a decline of 10% compared to the first half of 2022. The premium segment, which includes smartphones above $600 (approx. ₹49,660) reported the highest increase at 75% year-on-year to reach a 9% market share. “Consumers are opting for premium offerings, driven by easy and affordable financing options. Xiaomi, the market leader in Q2 2022 has been pushed to the fifth spot with a market share of 11%, down from 17.6% in Q2 2022. Realme dropped down a position to occupy the third position with a market share of 12.6% in Q2 2023, down from 17.5% in Q2 2022. Poco emerged as the biggest gainer, grabbing a 5% market share in Q2 2023, up from Q2 2022, an increase of 76.5%. OnePlus and Apple gained 61.1%, to grab 7.2% and 5.5% market share respectively. Apple also has the highest ASP among smartphone makers, at $929 (approx. ₹76,900). “In the upcoming festive season, the brands will try to spur consumer demand with affordable 5G launches, pre-booking offers, and loyalty/upgrade programs clubbed with festive discounts. The market requires strong double-digit growth in the next few months to see annual growth in 2023, which looks unlikely as of now," said Navkendar Singh, AVP – Devices Research, IDC. Whether they will be able to do it or not will be determined in the next four to five quarters, which is when Emkay Brokerage predicts it will achieve it. Jio’s revenue market share without including national long distance is at 39.8%. Vodafone Idea has a share of 28.9% and Bharti Airtel is at 24% for the fourth quarter. However, when including national long distance, Vodafone is the market leader with Jio close behind. Vodafone is ceding the most of its territory to Jio. “VIL lost market share in 14 circles which contribute 50% of its total AGR (adjusted gross revenue), whereas JIO gained market share in these circles,” said a recent report on telecom sector by Emkay Brokers. What’s more worrisome is that Vodafone Idea is losing share in its traditionally strong circles of Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh-East and Andhra Pradesh. These four leadership circles contribute to 28% of the merged company’s revenues. In the meanwhile, Jio found a niche in B and C circles, like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar amongst others. Not only does it command number one position in the circles, they contribute to more than half of Jio’s revenue. Yet, Jio is not gaining ground as fast as it did, earlier. “The intensity of RMS gains has decelerated due to slower revenue growth,” Emkay said. A Negative Outlook It is this manner of extreme competition which has worried rating agencies too. CARE recently downgraded its long-term debt to A- from AA-, with a negative outlook. “The negative outlook continues to factor the moderation of operational performance amidst intense prevalent competition in Indian telecom Industry. The competition in the industry has intensified leading to decline in realizations,” CARE said in its report. Improving Margins Vodafone Idea however is setting the stage for improving its margin even in an era where prices for 3G data fell drastically since Reliance Jio’s entry. It introduced a minimum recharge plan of Rs 35 for 28 days, and it lost 53 million subscribers in the fourth quarter. The customers which it lost were those who were using the number for incoming calls only or barely using it. As a result, its average revenue per user (ARPU) went up to ₹104 from ₹89 a quarter earlier. In spite of small victories, Vodafone Idea is a long way from withstanding the onslaught of Reliance Jio’s aggressive tariffs. And Vodafone’s fate will also depend on when, how it will win the price war. “The outlook may be revised to Stable in case it is able to withstand the competition in a more resilient manner and demonstrate improvement in operational and financial performance indicators,” CARE said.

Global smartphone brand <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> which has maintained top position in the smartphone shipments in India for 17 consecutive quarters, is fast losing market share in India and since Q1 2020, it has shed 8 per cent market share amid rising competition and supply chain constraints. In Q1 2020, Xiaomi registered a solid 29 per cent market share in the highly-competitive India market, according to Counterpoint Research data. Since then, the graph is spiralling downwards, slowly but steadily, and in Q4 2021 (the festive quarter), Xiaomi logged 21 per cent market share -- according to latest data coming from market research firm Canalys -- which is a massive 8 per cent decline from Q1 2020. The company, however, still maintained the lead in Q4 2021 with shipping 9.3 million units in the country, said Canalys. According to industry analysts, Xiaomi has been hit by component shortage in the mass-market, entry-level segment where its rival brands are rapidly gaining with riding on a new chipset player called Unisoc. In the premium segment where Xiaomi is aiming to gain footprint with launching top-of-the-line devices, Apple doubled its market share in India in 2021, on the back of increased share of domestic manufacturing, aggressive retail initiatives, and robust consumer demand. Certain brands which picked entry-level chipset provider Unisoc in the mass-market affordable segment amid the global chip shortage were able to meet the demand in the mass-level market, while Xiaomi lost on the opportunity as it was hit by supply issues in the all-important festive quarter (October-December). According to market research firm Techarc, entry-level chipset provider Unisoc saw two out of six smartphones launched in the entry segment (up to Rs 6,000) for 2021. On the other hand, Apple doubled its market share in the premium segment in India in 2021, selling 5-6 million units last year, thus narrowing the margin for other smartphone players in the premium category. Apple shipped a record 5.4 million iPhones to India in the entire year, and 2.2 million in the festive quarter (Q4) alone, according to Gurugram-based market research firm CMR. On the quarterly basis, the Cupertino-based giant registered 34 per cent growth in the October-December period. Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, said that Xiaomi has had to face tough headwinds in Q4 2021 owing, among others, to the prevailing supply side dynamics. "As the brand pegs its future growth on the premium smartphone segment, it will face-up to increased competition from its closest rivals. While doing so, Xiaomi will need to drive its brand salience among premium smartphone buyers to attain sustainable market gains," Ram told IANS. Indian PC market records 7.1% growth in Q2 2024, HP leads with nearly a third market share

The study has shown that the golden landmark was touched in November, and the figure was calculated on the basis of Moving Annual Total (MAT). 
 
In the report, it is said that three-fourth of the market share was taken over by Indian companies during the month of November. 
 
The Indian pharmaceutical market has grown by an average of 12% over the last three years. In this, drugs that treat infections, heart ailments and patients with gastro-intestinal issues covered almost 38% of the share. 
 
As per the report, in November, Indian market was valued at Rs 1,00,115 crore, of which the retail sector was valued at Rs 84,279 crore. 
 
Talking of companies, Sun Pharma held its top position with a market share of 8%, followed by Abbott that has a share of 6.1%. Cipla isn’t too far behind, with 5.4% market share, and has grown higher than its top peers with a growth of 16% during the month. 
 
In brands, however, it was Mixtard, the popular insulin marketed by Abbott, that retained its first position as the largest brand for the month. It was followed by the cough syrup brand Corex (Pfizer) and Glycomet-gp, a diabetes brand of USV.

Coming to Samsung, the Korean smartphone maker’s shipments have declined from 262.2 million in 2022 to 226.6 million in 2023, registering a 13.6% decline. Apple recorded a 42% share in overall revenue in Q2 2024, down from 45% in Q2 2023. “There were worries that iPhone volumes would disappoint after North American carriers reported record low upgrade rates and lower iPhone sales. Global smartphone market records 8% growth in Q2 2024, Samsung takes the top spot

India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer <keyword id="108831" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TVS-Motor-Company">TVS Motor Company</keyword> expects to increase its market share in the <keyword id="1107521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="scooter-segment">scooter segment</keyword> from 15% to 18% in two months. 
 With the launch of <keyword id="62356" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TVS">TVS</keyword> Scooty Zest 110, the company is looking at monthly sale of 75,000 scooters, up from current level of 60,000. The total volume of the scooter market in the country is 3.5 lakh per month. 
 According to JS <keyword id="45963" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Srinivasan">Srinivasan</keyword>, TVS vice-president, sales, the company expects a growth of over 30% in the overall sales volume during the current financial year. This is driven by a robust growth in the country’s two-wheeler market and the new launches by the company. The firm, which launched several models so far, plans two more later this fiscal. 
 
“The scooter range has been positioned to address different segments, such as Jupiter for male, TVS Wego as a sleek two-wheeler for husband/wife and the Scooty for young women,” said Srinivasan. 
 
In addition to this, TVS also plans to unveil two more motorcycles-- a commuter segment bike and another in the performance category--during the year. 
 
Last year, the company sold about 17.5 lakh two-wheelers in the domestic market and expects this number to surpass 22 lakh mark. 
 
It is worth mentioning that the scooter segment is growing at a higher rate than the two-wheeler industry. The growth in the segment last year was 24% and in the first five months of this fiscal it was 30%, double than the growth in the two-wheeler industry.

The premium smartphone segment comprises smartphones priced above-$600 (approx. ₹49,600). The growth of the premium smartphone segment has allowed it to capture 21% of the total smartphone market share for the first time, up from 19% in 2021. The above-$1,000 segment also emerged as the fastest-growing price segment in 2022, registering an increase of 38% year-on-year. Three out of four premium smartphones sold in 2022 were an iPhone

It took <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> two years to end <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>'s winning streak in the India smartphone market, as the South Korean major recaptured the top slot in the third quarter (July-September period) with 24 per cent share, as the Chinese major logged 23 per cent market share, a Counterpoint Research report said on Wednesday. Riding on multiple strategies -- including effective supply chain and touching various price points through new launches -- Samsung became the leading brand in the India smartphone market with 32 per cent (year-on-year) growth. Samsung was also the fastest to recover, surpassing the pre-COVID levels in Q3 2020, according to the latest research from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service. Samsung's aggressive push in online channels, with highest-ever online contribution within its portfolio, also helped it regain its number one spot, the report noted. Xiaomi slipped to number two position for the first time since Q3 2018 with 4 per cent YoY decline. "Manufacturing constraints due to the Covid-19 situation affected its supply chain, leading to a supply-demand gap," the report noted. Vivo with 16 per cent market share and Realme with 14 per cent share were third and fourth, respectively. Overall, India's smartphone shipments grew 9 per cent (YoY) to reach over 53 million units in Q3 2020 e the highest-ever shipment in a quarter. "In terms of price bands, the mid-tier (Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000) segment registered the highest growth and reached its highest ever share in a quarter," said senior research analyst Prachir Singh. In the overall handset market, Samsung was once again the leader with 22 per cent market share, followed by Xiaomi at 14 per cent share. The report said that with ramped-up manufacturing, strong demand for the Redmi 9 and Note 9 series, aggressive product strategy and growing offline presence, "we believe Xiaomi will come back strongly in the coming quarter". Vivo grew 4 per cent (YoY) and retained its third position in Q3, driven by strong demand for its Y-series models in offline channels. In Q3 2020, it entered the premium market with the X50 series and was the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to launch a gimbal camera that got positive feedback from consumers. "Though online channels remain in focus, OEMs are also trying to leverage new opportunities in offline channels in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities," said Research Analyst Shilpi Jain. In this regard, Xiaomi launched 'Mi store on Wheels', Samsung launched Galaxy M01 Core and vivo announced more retail discounts. "Additionally, the brands are focusing on affordability by announcing cashbacks, promotions and offers on devices," Jain added. Samsung overtakes Xiaomi to retake the smartphone crown in India

New Delhi, <keyword id="4151067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kia-india" source="Orion">Kia India</keyword> on Tuesday unveiled the updated version of its mid-sized sports utility vehicle Seltos, as it aims to garner a 10 per cent market share in the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) segment. The automaker, which currently has a market share of around 7 per cent in the domestic market, also aims to double its existing sales network to 600 plus outlets from over 300. "Seltos is the product with which we entered India, and since then, the journey of Kia India and the Seltos has been almost identical. We have a segment disruptor and a segment winner in the new Seltos and are confident to take forward the strong legacy of the <keyword id="17897717" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="brand-seltos" source="Orion">Brand Seltos</keyword> to lead the premium RV market," Kia India Managing Director and CEO Tae-Jin Park said. This strategic launch is key to the company's ambitions of attaining a 10 per cent market share soon, he added. "We feel that there is a lot of growth potential in the mid-SUV segment, and the new Seltos will grow the premium end of it," Park noted. With the refreshed look, most powerful engine in the segment, and host of safety and smart features, the new Seltos inevitably will emerge as the most preferred drive for new-age customers, he added. Seltos brand currently contributes 55 per cent to Kia India's overall sales. It is one of the biggest brands for the Kia Corporation, with one out of every ten Kia cars sold globally being a Seltos. The new Seltos comes with all-new interiors and various safety features, including level 2 advanced driver assistance systems. The model is powered by 1.5-litre petrol and diesel powertrains mated with manual and automatic transmissions. Kia will open the bookings for the model, which would be available in 18 trims, on July 14 and commence sales on July 25.
