Indian banks are expected to have steady growth in earnings and returns over the next 3–4 years, according to a recent report by Jefferies. It expects a 13% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in loan growth for banks between FY24 and FY27, helmed by a supportive environment and expected adjustments in interest rates. "We expect steady growth in earnings and stable returns, Over FY24-27, the banks we cover should see 13% CAGRin loans We factor 25-50 bps cut in rates, &amp; depending on timing, NIMs will move," the report said. Depending on the timing, these rate cuts could impact banks' <keyword id="20076541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-interest-margins" source="keywords">net interest margins</keyword> (NIMs), which measure the difference between interest income generated and interest paid to depositors. The report also notes that banks' net interest income (NII), a critical metric that is reflective of how much a bank earns from its lending, could grow at a steady 12% CAGR, which would support overall earnings growth. <h2>Rate cuts probable next year</h2>Per SBI Mutual Fund's monthly outlook for November 2024, while markets were initially speculating possible rate reductions in December this year or February next year these chances now stand dampened due to two reasons. First, elevated CPI numbers in September, which stood at a nine-month high, underlined the stickiness of food inflation. Secondly, RBI governor Das recently highlighted his hawkish stance at a conference, stating that "rate cuts at this stage would be premature and risky’. The report further adds that February 2025, or even April, would be a better time to discuss repo rate cuts in India. Even <keyword id="19985925" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-credit-growth" source="keywords">bank credit growth</keyword> has continued to outpace deposit growth for two years now. However, they seem to be inching closer in the recent past. For instance, in October 2024, while bank credit growth remained at 12.7%, the deposit growth rate followed closely at 11.8%. This also means that banks are witnessing an elevated bank credit-to-deposit ratio, standing at 77% in October. <h2>Risks in unsecured lending </h2>However, Jefferies noted some areas of caution that could influence growth in other revenue streams, particularly fees. Growth in fees may be at risk due to expected declines in the disbursal of unsecured loans, which generally carry higher interest rates and generate higher fees for banks. October saw stress and defaults rising in the unsecured lending space, prompting the RBI to intervene. As a result, unsecured loans by banks have only grown by 12.1%, the lowest since the pandemic. Despite these risks, the report expects banks' return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) to remain healthy, underscoring the sector's stable profitability potential. The report also highlights that while the Nifty Banks index has risen by 19% over the past year, it has still underperformed the broader Nifty index, which delivered 27% returns in the same period. BSE Bankex has been along similar lines, generating returns worth 19% over one year. While the Nifty banks' index has a YTD (yield to date) of 7.63%, it continues to trail Nifty's YTD of 11.30%

Nifty followed suit, tanking 2.7% to close at 24,049.95 points on Monday. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd noted that markets plunged sharply today, losing over 2.5% due to weak global cues. All key sectors declined in line with the benchmark, with realty, metal, and energy being the top losers. The broader indices also suffered, losing between 3.6% and 4.6%. While Nifty Small cap 100 dipped by 4.57%, midcap 100 slipped by 3.55%. Nifty micro cap dipped by 4.49%. "Going forward, we may see continued volatile swings with a negative bias due to multiple global headwinds, including the unwinding of <keyword id="20079828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yen" source="keywords">Yen</keyword> carry trades, recession fears in the US, and escalating tensions in the Middle East. On the index front, we are eyeing the 23,250-23,400 zone as key support for Nifty, while the 24,500-24,700 zone will act as resistance in the event of a rebound. Traders should align their positions accordingly and prefer a hedged approach. Investors, on the other hand, should view this correction as an opportunity to accumulate quality stocks on dip", Mishra continued. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares that while Nifty50 managed to defend its psychological support of 24,000 and ended the session at 24,055.60 with a loss of 662.10 points, all the sectors ended the day in red with metal and media being the underperformers. "Broader markets have witnessed a steeper correction as mid and small caps corrected by 3.55% &amp; 4.57% respectively. With a major bearish gap zone, the Index has formed a big red candle which clearly indicates the control of the bears. In the lower time frame, an extremely oversold condition was observed, and thus, a short-term pullback is warranted. The immediate support is placed at 23,860 while on the higher side, 24,250 will be considered a hurdle", continued Gaggar. Amidst broad market indices, India VIX climbed up a staggering 42.23% during the day, while all mid caps and small cap indices shed between 2-4% today. While all sectoral indices closed the day in red, only FMCG managed to contain its losses by dipping only 0.32%, PSU bank (down by 4.09%), media (down by 4.58%) and metal (down by 4.85%) were the leading laggards. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities highlighted that amongst global macros, oil prices remained near eight-month lows today, as recession fears in the United States, the world's largest oil consumer, outweighed concerns that rising tensions in the Middle East might disrupt supplies from the key production region. "Recent US economic data presented a mixed outlook. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.2%, slightly below the expected 0.3%. Non-farm payrolls rose by just 1,14,000, significantly below the anticipated 1,76,000, and the unemployment rate increased to 4.3%, the highest since November 2021. In this context, the upcoming Fed commentary will be crucial for driving the market sentiment", he said. "However, the current market texture is weak and volatile but due to temporary oversold conditions, we could expect one intraday pullback rally. For the day traders now, 24,000/78,500 would be the immediate reference point. Above the same, we could expect intraday pullback up to 24,150-24,250/79,000-79,300. On the flip side, below 24,000/78,500 the selling pressure is likely accelerate. Below the same, it could retest the level of 23,900/78,300. Further down side may also continue which could drag the index till 23,800/78,000", noted Chouhan. Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical Analyst, Angel One advises traders to avoid attempting to catch the bottom in the short term and should use any rebounds to reduce long positions. "One of the key highlights of the day was India VIX spiked by 42% to surpass the 20 mark, expect the Volatility to remain on the higher side, so it is advisable to manage risk carefully and stay informed about global developments, as they are likely to influence our markets in the near term", he explained.

India-US join hands to promote cooperation in MSMEs

Picture this: You're walking down the grocery aisle in 2009. A carton of eggs costs about $1.60, and a pound of ground beef is $2.13. The typical home for sale across the street is about $214,000. Flash forward to today, and the prices for those same goods have shot up to $2.71, $5.47, and $412,000. Prices are up about 45% across the board. But the one thing that has stayed constant? The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/current-federal-minimum-wage-is-13-years-old-inflation-impact-2022-7">federal minimum wage</a>, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 15 years.You can see the issue: People making the mandated minimum have far less purchasing power than they once did. The silver lining is that thanks to the reality of the labor market, very few workers actually make $7.25. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the nearly 80 million workers in the US who are paid hourly rates, only 1.3%, or about 1 million, are paid at or below that federal floor.Given the situation, here's an idea: Why not raise the federal minimum wage right now? It wouldn't be a big deal for businesses, which by and large aren't paying $7.25 anyway, and it would lock in gains that low-wage workers have made in recent years in the event of a downturn. Thanks to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w25434/w25434.pdf">spillover effect</a> an increase may have, it could also help workers beyond those making the lowest wages and bump up their pay, too.Research suggests a higher minimum wage <a target="_blank" href="https://wpcarey.asu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/Minimum%20Wage%20and%20Individual%20Worker%20Productivity.pdf">can increase worker productivity</a> and lower turnover costs for businesses because workers stick with their employers longer. It could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/a-15-minimum-wage-would-have-significant-and-direct-effects-on-the-federal-budget/#:~:text=The%20estimated%20annual%20reductions%20due,2025%20and%20later%20years%20than">reduce government expenditures</a> on public assistance programs and put more money into consumers' pockets for them to <a target="_blank" href="https://ideas.repec.org/a/fip/fedhle/y2013iaugn313.html">increase aggregate household spending</a> and, in turn, boost GDP.Though it seems like a win-win-win for the economy, workers, and even businesses (though many won't say that), Congress has resisted raising the federal minimum wage for the past decade and a half. Getting anything done legislatively is always a challenge, especially in an election year, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2023/5/24/725-isnt-cutting-it-in-this-economy-voters-support-raising-the-minimum-wage-to-20-per-hour">polls</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/04/22/most-americans-support-a-15-federal-minimum-wage/">indicate</a> a higher minimum wage is broadly popular. Many states, red and blue, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pay-raise-minimum-wage-increase-january-2024-state-2023-12">have implemented higher wages</a>. Some have even done so by voter referendum, including Nebraska and Florida — not exactly Democratic strongholds. Even if it's not on the 2024 agenda, it could be on the radar in Washington, DC, for 2025."You would think that this would be an uncontroversial policy — just pass a minimum wage, give these workers a higher wage," said Yannet Lathrop, a senior researcher and policy analyst at the National Employment Law Program. "But nothing is easy, obviously, in Washington."The US is in uncharted territory when it comes to federal minimum-wage hikes. This is the longest period that the national floor hasn't increased since it was implemented in 1938.The $7.25 minimum is also out of step with the many states and municipalities that have wage standards separate from — and often above — the federal number. Arizona's minimum, for example, is $14.35, California's $16, Florida's $12, and West Virginia's $8.75. Seattle's minimum wage for large businesses is $19.97, and for smaller ones it's $17.25. Still, several states have a minimum wage that matches the federal one, such as Wisconsin and Iowa, and places like Mississippi and South Carolina have no state minimum wage, meaning $7.25 is the floor.Beyond legal requirements, most businesses are now paying well above $7.25. Part of this is thanks to campaigns like The Fight for $15 — as in a $15 minimum wage — which has for years been a progressive rallying cry and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stimulus-package-pelosi-minimum-wage-increase-coronavirus-relief-2021-2">legislative push</a>. (That <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-the-minimum-wage-increase-bernie-sanders-new-bill-2023-5">goal has inched up to $17</a>, which proponents say is necessary <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-15-minimum-wage-may-worth-when-comes-into-effect-2021-2">because of inflation</a>.) But a lot of the recent increases are thanks to the super-tight post-pandemic labor market in which companies in the service and retail sectors raised their base pay in an attempt to woo workers. Walmart's minimum is now $14, and it says its average associate makes over $17.50. Target's starting wages range from $15 to $24. It's not uncommon to see help-wanted signs outside fast-food restaurants and stores advertising $14 or $15 an hour. As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/23/business/economy/minimum-wage.html">The New York Times has pointed out</a>, low-wage workers make more than their state's minimum wage basically everywhere. One of the tricky things standing in the way of a minimum-wage increase is a fear of what mandating higher pay might do to the labor market and the economy. Whenever there are rumblings of a government-ordered wage hike, the business community acts like the sky is falling. They claim that higher paychecks will drive them under — especially the little guys — and cause them to lay off workers en masse. Hyperbole aside, it's not unreasonable to wonder about the risks higher wages may pose. For workers, a $15 wage only matters if they get to keep their jobs.The research on the impact of minimum-wage increases can be a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure situation — you can probably cherry-pick a research paper to back up whatever argument you're making. One <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/impacts-of-minimum-wages-review-of-the-international-evidence">2019 review</a> of the international literature on the impact of minimum wages found a "very muted effect" on employment and a significant increase in the earnings of low-wage workers. The Congressional Budget Office has a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbo.gov/publication/55681">neat little calculator</a> that lets you play around with its estimates of the effects of a federal minimum-wage hike. It predicts it would lift families out of poverty but could also result in some job loss."Even if we have unemployment tick up the next few months, the fact of the matter is with so few workers down around that $7.25 level, an increase is not going to affect that many businesses significantly," said Jacob Vigdor, an economist and professor at the University of Washington who has studied the impact of Seattle's minimum-wage hike in the mid-2010s.Vigdor said his research found a 99.3% survival rate for Seattle businesses, and the labor market when the move was enacted was not as strong as it is now. He found that some workers, particularly those with less experience, saw their hours go down as businesses tried to compensate but that most people still saw a net increase in their paychecks. He said teens looking for their first jobs, in particular, wound up being losers.More-recent hikes, like those for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-fast-food-minimum-wage-newsom-cutting-jobs-losses-employment-2024-7">fast-food workers in California</a>, also don't seem to have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-minimum-wage-fast-food-qsr-restaurants-silver-lining-candidates-2024-6">put tons of people out of work</a>."We're not seeing these job losses that are claimed to be inevitable," said Justin Wiltshire, an assistant economics professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia <a target="_blank" href="https://irle.berkeley.edu/publications/working-papers/minimum-wage-effects-and-monopsony-explanations/">who has studied</a> minimum-wage hikes in New York and California.Michael Reich, an economics professor and the chair of UC Berkeley's Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, told me that the cost of fast-food wage increases in New York and California were absorbed by small price increases, reduced turnover costs (because employees stayed longer), and reductions in excess profits. He added that much of the time, businesses worry that higher prices will hurt their sales without taking into account that their competitors will raise their prices, too."They're going to be in the same place, competitively, that they were before," he said, "but they often don't have that outlook."David Neumark, an economist at the University of California, Irvine, told me he still thinks a higher minimum would lead to job loss. He acknowledges that the grounds of the labor market have shifted, but he still doesn't think the federal minimum ought to go up — or, if it does, it should be indexed locally and to inflation."It is certainly true that whatever the minimum wage was in any location three years ago or whatever, it is less binding now because wages have gone up," he said.Once the minimum wage gets so high that it starts to cause a bunch of job loss, that's a problem. But what counts as "too high" isn't easily deciphered — and in many places across the country that have raised the minimum, that threshold doesn't seem to have arrived. There are potential trade-offs — a small increase in prices, for example — but it seems like they may be worth it in the name of putting more money in workers' pockets, supporting the economy, and helping businesses keep their staffers around.It is impossible to predict the exact impact of a higher minimum wage at the federal level. A lot of the effect would depend on the labor market, competition, geography, and, importantly, the amount. The new progressive benchmark is $17 an hour, but there's plenty of space between $7.25 and that. Some of the aversion comes down to a simple fear of the unknown. If a higher minimum wage lifts millions of people out of poverty, that's incredible. But you also can't blame some people for worrying they might be one of the unlucky ones who have a hard time finding a new gig because businesses aren't hiring as much. You also can't blame consumers who fret about prices creeping up, even if only by a few cents. The business community has done a good job of messaging that higher pay will be the end of days in a way that really does scare people. But plenty of businesses can afford to pay their workers more, even if that means they profit less.It's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-minimum-wage-too-low-every-us-county-inflation-mortgage-2022-3">hard to argue</a> that $7.25 an hour is a livable wage basically anywhere in America. That amounts to about $15,000 a year — less than one-third of the median wage in the country, at the poverty line for individuals, and well below it for families. In one of the richest countries in the world, you shouldn't be able to work a full-time job and still live in poverty. It's good for everyone when low-wage workers have more money in their bank accounts. They spend it, which is a positive for the economy. And workers at the very bottom aren't the only ones helped by a higher minimum."You look at several of the states that do not have minimum wage above $7.25 an hour, and the average earnings of low-wage workers, it's just a lot lower than it is elsewhere," Wiltshire said. "There is more income inequality between the median worker and the lowest-paid worker."Over the past few years, we've seen that the US economy can sustain higher wages. At some point a downturn will hit, and the labor market will be more precarious. When that happens, workers shouldn't have to give back the hard-fought gains they've made over the past few years — especially given the evidence that it's not necessary. Few people have been making $7.25 for a while now. Businesses have survived, as has the economy. The anticipated interest rate cuts in the US will further stimulate demand. India's RMG exports will also benefit from stable cotton prices and uninterrupted supply, enhancing cost competitiveness on the global stage. The ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, a major player in the global RMG market, presents a temporary tailwind for Indian exporters. He had an Apple II computer and cassette tape player that plugged into a TV on a rolling cart, which is where he taught himself to code by playing video games and reading through manuals. He said an early game of his, coded using Applesoft BASIC, was a text-based adventure game in which players would get lost in a forest and navigate through a maze, answering a series of fork-in-the-road puzzles to chase down the treasure. As a teenager, Tully had a bank of modems at his mom's house to organize a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/11/the-lost-civilization-of-dial-up-bulletin-board-systems/506465/">bulletin board system</a> – a pre-internet computer server that other users could dial into – to host pirated video games. After college, Tully gravitated toward startups, becoming a software engineer at the dot-com-era companies iScale and Pillar Data Systems, the latter of which he left in 2003 and was eventually acquired by Oracle. He spent 14 years at Yahoo, working his way up to lead engineering for Yahoo, AOL, and its media properties, which included the Huffington Post, Tumblr, Polyvore, and Flurry, and managing a team of more than 850 people. In 2017, Tully joined data analytics company Splunk as its chief technology officer and senior vice president of product and engineering and managed the company's migration to the cloud. While he loved his team at Splunk, Tully said that he was always interested in the investing side of the tech world, and his interest was further piqued by his wife, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sequoia-partner-jess-lee-advice-for-startup-founders-2022-9">Jess Lee</a>, who has been a partner at Sequoia since 2016. "Growing up in the Valley, I had this in the back of my mind, and I thought that as a technical person, I could do the job differently, so I began to take some calls," he said. One of those calls eventually turned into a job offer at Menlo Ventures, and Tully joined the firm as a partner in 2021. "This was an opportunity to be part of the next wave of folks that joined the firm, which was exciting to me because I'm a builder," he said. <h2>At Menlo Ventures, Tully writes checks for AI startups at the app and infrastructure layers</h2>Since joining Menlo, Tully has invested in nine startups, including Pinecone, which raised a $28 million Series A in 2022; Neon, which raised a $46 million Series B in 2023; Unstructured, which raised a $40 million Series B in 2024; and JuliaHub, an AI programming startup that raised $24 million in 2021. Another of his portfolio companies, AI quality management software startup True Era, was acquired by Snowflake earlier this year. For Tully, finding camaraderie with technical founders has been a winning strategy so far in his VC career. "My background helps me connect with technical founders because they want investors who they can talk shop with," he said. "I've managed teams and have been CTO of a public company." He's also written code as a way to help win over startups in the broader Menlo Ventures portfolio. In 2022, another Menlo partner, Naomi Pilosof Ionita, was working to land a deal for fintech startup Orb. The company didn't have a software development kit, so Tully wrote them one, printed out a link to the devkit, rolled it into a scroll, and delivered it to the startup. That helped seal the deal, and Ionita led Orb's $14 million Series A funding round. While Menlo has been bolstering its portfolio with AI-infrastructure startups, Tully said he's excited about opportunities at the application layer. This means looking at various vertical AI categories, including legaltech — he wrote a $14 million seed check for the AI legal assistant Eve, which was announced in 2023 — as well as marketing and automation. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, Tully is also trying out various AI coding copilots, and he says that the tech is making him "50-60% more productive if I'm being honest." "I'm really high on AI coding assistants," he said. "Opportunities in this space are pretty compelling." This undervaluation, known as the "<keyword id="24399183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="korean-discount" source="keywords">Korean Discount</keyword>," reflects how South Korean companies are priced much lower than their global peers despite robust fundamentals — strong financial performance and consistent profitability. Will <keyword id="93460" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hyundai-india" source="Orion">Hyundai India</keyword> justify its high valuation? Or does the listing highlight broader questions about the overheated valuation dynamics of Indian markets? A record-breaking <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword> but questions remain Hyundai Motor India’s mega Initial Public Offering (IPO), launched in October 2024, broke records by raising ₹27,870 crore, making it India’s largest-ever IPO. The offer was oversubscribed by 2.37 times, highlighting robust demand. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss. <h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. On listing, Hyundai was valued at $18 billion, positioning it as one of India’s most valuable automotive companies. However, such high valuations often temper investor enthusiasm, resulting in more cautious short-term outcomes. For most investors, the Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio is the most preferred parameter to gauge if a company is overvalued or undervalued. With a P/E ratio of 26.3, HMIL was priced significantly above the Indian automotive industry average of 24.4. Globally, automotive companies operate with much lower P/E ratios, reflecting mature market conditions and slower growth trajectories. HMIL’s South Korean parent Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) trades at a meagre 3.07, believe it or not! For Indian investors, the high premium hinted at overvaluation despite Hyundai’s strong domestic position. Such stark difference in valuation obviously sparked debates — is the Indian market assigning a premium to Hyundai Motor India’s growth potential, or is it simply reflecting the general exuberance around the prospects of the Indian economy? Another concern is the allocation of IPO proceeds. Hyundai’s IPO was structured as an offer for sale (OFS), meaning all funds raised would flow to the parent company rather than Hyundai India’s operations. Although Hyundai has committed to investing in R&amp;D for EVs and hybrids, critics argue that the lack of immediate reinvestment in India’s operations reflects a missed opportunity for domestic growth. Despite the early disappointment, Hyundai was confident that the valuation was fair. It did have some factors going for it, in addition to the fact that other auto giants like Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> command even higher P/E ratios. And looking at the company fundamentals, it does seem like Hyundai is playing a long-term game. <h3>Hyundai in India: A proven track record</h3>Despite the initial stumble, Hyundai India’s long-term story is compelling. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai’s blockbuster SUV offerings, like the Creta and Venue, have been critical in building this dominance.
