The rupee fell 7 paise to trade at 84.47 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday weighed down by a muted trend in domestic equities and strength of the American currency in the overseas markets. <keyword id="20024982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Forex-traders" source="keywords">Forex traders</keyword> said the latest <keyword id="20064878" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Federal-Open-Market-Committee" source="keywords">Federal Open Market Committee</keyword> (FOMC) minutes reveal a significant shift in the Federal Reserve's outlook. The Fed is likely to put downward pressure on short-term interest rates, reducing the appeal of dollar-denominated assets and contributing to the decline in the Dollar Index. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.45 and moved in a tight range and touched 84.47 against the greenback, registering a fall of 7 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee depreciated by 11 paise to close at 84.40 against the US dollar. "The 84.50 level remains a strong support for the USD/INR pair. <keyword id="23456490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-interventions" source="keywords">RBI interventions</keyword>, coupled with anticipated capital inflows -- such as Godrej Properties' Rs 4,000 crore QIP and Univest's USD 16 million capital raise -- are expected to support the rupee further," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the USD/INR pair is likely to encounter resistance near the 84.50 mark, with expectations of trading within the 83.80 to 84.50 range, showing a slight downward bias. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.14 per cent at 106.22. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.18 per cent to USD 72.70 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 68.21 points or 0.09 per cent to 80,302.29 in morning trade, while Nifty was up 34.20 points or 0.14 per cent to 24,309.10 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) infused Rs 7.78 crore in the capital markets on a net basis on Wednesday, according to exchange data. Rupee falls 7 paise to 84.47 against US dollar in early trade

Days after Trump won his way to the White House, becoming the 47th President of the United States, the US Federal Reserve slashed the interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing them within the range of 4.5-4.75%. This is the second time this year that the Fed has lowered the interest rates, after cutting them down by 50 basis points in September 2024. u Fed chair Jerome Powell noted that monetary policy remains tight as inflation remains elevated at 2.4% as of September 2024, slightly above the 2% mark set by the commission. However, the Fed remained optimistic about the current state of the economy. "The Committee seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at 2% over the longer run. The Committee judges that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly in balance. The economic outlook is uncertain, and the Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate," the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) noted in its press release. The rate cut was along widely anticipated lines, although experts were wary of the Fed's way ahead, given that Donald Trump has been elected as the US President. In the past, he has, on multiple occasions, expressed his desire to yield greater influence on the Fed, apart from publicly criticizing Powell. However, Powell continued to stand his ground, noting that Trump cannot legally sack him. He believed in keeping the Fed independent, at least until his tenure as governor ends in 2028. He highlighted that even if he is explicitly asked by Trump to quit, he won't do so. <h2>Trump's regime to inch up inflation?</h2> Trump's electoral promises, if translated into policies, could spell disaster for the Fed's effort to curtail inflation. Reportedly, Trump has promised to levy aggressive tariffs against US trading partners, particularly China, and even extend his 2017 tax cuts. This could mean higher levels of the federal deficit, which would push up prices, wages, and hence, inflation, even as the Fed tries to consistently bring it under control. Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives and Research, SAMCO Securities, notes that it wasn't a surprise when the US Fed cut interest rates by 25 basis points (bps) to 4.75%. The Fed had given enough clues, and the market too had anticipated these rate cuts. "However, what was surprising was how the <keyword id="23863852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-10-year-bond-yields" source="keywords">US 10-year bond yields</keyword> moved over the last one and a half months, which have been rising relentlessly from 3.6% to almost 4.5% despite the 50 bps cut in the last Fed meeting. It seems that the market is anticipating slower rate cuts going ahead, and maybe there are even chances of inflation rising. The bond yields have cooled off and slipped below the 4.335% mark. This should be bullish for emerging markets like India," he added.

But the Sep 12th Indian markets action is pointing to a classical flows pattern of equity markets getting inflows as the US dollar weakens on the back of Fed rate cuts. Markets will move sharply in anticipation of this. Some minor risk off is possible early next week, in the lead up to the FOMC announcement on Sep 18th night time in India. FIIs have cut the "caution" out from our "cautious optimism" and made us ardently "optimistic" said Ajay Bagga, Banking and market expert. In the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange, Nifty Media led in gains, followed by Nifty Metal and Nifty PSU Bank. In the Asian markets on Friday, there was mixed movement, with Japan's Nikkei index falling 0.89 percent, along with flat movement in South Korea's KOSPI. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's stock index surged 1.16 percent, and Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted also gained marginally, by 0.14 percent at the time of filing this report. The U.S. markets on Thursday marked the fourth consecutive session of gains, with the S&amp;P index gaining 0.75 percent, while the Nasdaq surged 1 percent by the closing bell. The European markets also closed with positive gains after the EU announced rate cuts of 25 basis points. Germany's DAX surged 1.02 percent, France's CAC index gained 0.51 percent, while the UK's FTSE index gained 0.57 percent on Thursday. The Indian stock markets hit a record-breaking milestone on Thursday, with both Sensex and Nifty closing at record highs. This surge was driven by broad-based buying across sectors, reflecting strong investor confidence and robust market sentiment. The Sensex skyrocketed by 1,439.55 points to close at 82,962.71, while the Nifty surged by 395.40 points, closing at 25,313.85 points.
