<ul class="summary-list"><li>Stocks could see a 10% drop by the end of the year, Stifel's Barry Bannister says.</li><li>The bank's stock-strategy chief pointed to the slowing job market and the potential for sticky inflation.</li></ul><p>The stock market could be headed into an end-of-the-year correction, according to Stifel's Barry Bannister.</p><p>The investment bank's chief stock strategist said investors should take caution heading into the fourth quarter. That's because the job market is slowing, and inflation could remain sticker than markets are expecting — two headwinds that could spark as much as a 10% decline in the S&amp;P 500, he predicted in a recent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G4lcaFQsN0">interview with CNBC.</a></p><p>"When you add it all together, it's a slowing economy, particularly on the jobs side — there are a lot of options out there, and the market's expensive. So, we would certainly urge caution going into the late third and fourth quarter," Bannister said.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-today-investors-prepare-wave-jobs-data-this-week-2024-9">slowing job market</a> has already caught the attention of investors, who are watching for signs of continued economic weakness. 18% of US consumers reported said jobs were hard to get in September, up from just 17% of consumers recorded the prior month, according to the Conference Board's latest Consumer Confidence Survey.</p><p>US companies, meanwhile, announced more than 75,000 job cuts in August, a 193% increase from the prior month, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.challengergray.com/blog/job-cuts-announced-by-us-based-companies-surge-in-august-2024-hiring-falls-to-lowest-ytd-since-challenger-began-tracking-in-2005/">report</a> from Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.</p><p>Inflationary pressures could also linger around the economy, which could complicate the market's vision for steep rate cuts, Bannister suggested. Investors are largely expecting interest rates to fall to 3% or lower by mid-next year, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch tool</a>. But he says that's unlikely to happen without the economy seeing a slowdown, which is also bearish for stocks.</p><p>"It's very hard to justify getting below 3% without a slowdown," Bannister said of interest rates. "If we don't have a slowdown, if we continue to utilize these limited resources that we have, what you'd end up with is a no landing scenario, where rates and yields should not be dramatically lower."</p><p>Investors also look a little too optimistic, given that stocks are hovering close to their all-time highs, Bannister said. Nearly half of all investors said they felt bullish on stocks for the next six months, according to the AAII's latest <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.aaii.com/sentimentsurvey">Investor Sentiment Survey</a>.</p><p>"I don't have any problem with the views of the Fed being more dovish in 2024. It's what people expect in 2025 that started to be priced in, and the 31% year-to-year gain in the S&amp;P 500. Everything just feels very frothy," he added.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Stifel warns of a sharp stock market correction by year-end, with the S&amp;P 500 potentially dropping 12%.</li><li>Chief equity strategist Barry Bannister said high valuations and speculative investor behavior are a concern.</li></ul><p>Investors should prepare for a sharp and quick correction in the stock market before the end of the year, according to Stifel.</p><p>In a note on Thursday, chief equity strategist Barry Bannister of Stifel warned that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> could trade 12% lower in the fourth quarter.</p><p>"Our instruments tell us to expect an S&amp;P 500 correction to the very low 5,000s by 4Q24," Bannister said.</p><p>According to Bannister, there are a number of factors that are giving him cause for concern, including the idea that investors are exhibiting the type of behavior that is present during bubbles and manias.</p><p>"Just as countries that go rogue become almost un-investable, investors caught in the grips of a speculative fever become almost un-analyzable," Bannister said.</p><p>For one, Bannister is concerned about current stock market valuations, which are approaching a "near three-generation high" based on the S&amp;P 500's price-to-earnings multiple of around 24x.</p><p>In addition, the sharp outperformance of large-cap growth stocks relative to value stocks is approaching the same peak seen in February 2000 and August 2020, which both served as a warning of an imminent bear market.</p><p>On the labor front, while Bannister admits that rising labor supply via increased immigration has supported economic growth, with US GDP growing at a rate above pre-pandemic trend levels, overall labor demand has been fading.</p><p>"Fading labor demand is now symbolic of recession risk," Bannister said.</p><p>Bannister highlighted that the non-farm payroll 6-month diffusion index just crossed below a "recession trigger level."</p><div type="image" title="Chart of recession indicator flashing" height="735" width="1113" msid="113533833" hostid="261" sizebytes="98074"></div><p>The diffusion index helps measure the breadth of job gains or losses across all economic industries.</p><p>Shifting to the election in November, Bannister said the typical "pre-election juice" for the economy is likely to fade towards the end of the year, as election promises from both sides of the aisle retreat and reality sets in that it's hard to pass significant legislation in what could be a divided government.</p><p>"Pre-election juice for the economy may recede at year-end, causing stocks (which anticipate the future) to dip ~4 months in advance, and that is 4Q24E," Bannister explained.</p><p>Finally, Bannister said that many investors are not appreciating <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-opposite-scenario-meltup-risk-fed-rate-cuts-2024-5">the risks of a bubble in technology stocks,</a> akin to what happened during the dot-com craze nearly 25 years ago. </p><p>"It takes one generation to forget the dangers of a bubble, and it is Groundhog Day versus the 1990s Tech Bubble; in reality 'new tech' isn't even 'new' and today's low Equity Risk Premium appears to us to lock-in a weak S&amp;P 500 next-10-year compound annual real total return close to 3% real and 6% nominal," Bannister said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Market vet Ed Yardeni boosted his S&amp;P 500 forecast to 10,000 by the end of the decade, implying a 66% gain.</li><li>Yardeni says the market's euphoria will continue amid favorable policies and a potential end to geopolitical conflict under Trump.</li></ul><p>The stock market <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/trump-election-win-stock-market-today-record-high-sp500-dow-2024-11?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">euphoria</a> sparked by Donald Trump's victory is set to last, according to market veteran Ed Yardeni.</p><p>Yardeni on Monday reiterated his forecast for the S&amp;P 500 to hit 10,000 by the end of the decade, a 66% gain from current levels. He also upped his year-end forecast for 2024 to 6,100, implying a 1.8% gain.</p><p>The long-time forecaster pointed to heightened odds of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-roaring-20s-rapid-growth-stock-market-analysis-ed-yardeni-2024-1">"Roaring 20s"</a> scenario after Trump's win—and a likely Republican sweep of Congress—fueled a rally that carried stocks to their best week of the year. </p><p>He says the "animal spirits" that fueled last week's big gains will likely continue to boost investor sentiment as the President-Elect unveils more pro-business policies.</p><p>"We believe these forecasts are consistent with our Roaring 2020s scenario, which is receiving a boost from the animal spirits that should result from Trump 2.0's economic policies," Yardeni wrote. </p><p>Trump's win early last Wednesday has fueled the S&amp;P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average each to record highs, propelled by the "Trump trade," which has sent everything from bitcoin to the dollar to Tesla soaring.  </p><p>Investors are widely expecting Trump's second presidency to bring more business-friendly policies, including less regulation and lower taxes, which will help drive corporate profits higher.</p><p>As a result, Yardeni says he expects industry analysts to up their S&amp;P 500 earnings estimates, and raises his own from $275 to $285 for 2025, and from $300 to $320 for 2026. Those estimates assume Trump will quickly lower the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15%, he says.</p><p>He adds that market optimism could intensify further if the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East get resolved sooner than initially expected.</p><p>Yet Yardeni warned, too, that the euphoric feeling on Wall Street and stretched valuations in some mega-cap names could set the stage for a difficult comedown if stocks fly too high to fast. </p><p>"Animal spirits can be associated with irrational exuberance causing a stock market meltup that could set the stage for a meltdown," he said.</p><p>While he doesn't see a huge risk of a bear market amid the current euphoric sentiment, Yardeni said he does expect to see corrections before the end of the decade, he says.</p>

Trump's win boosts forecast for 'Roaring 20s' to send the S&P 500 up 66% by the end of the decade, market veteran says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The stock market could face a 7% correction by mid-November, says Fundstrat's Mark Newton.</li><li>Investor complacency and weak seasonals could trigger decline, according to Newton.</li></ul><p>The stock market looks poised for a 7% correction by mid-November, according to technical analyst Mark Newton of Fundstrat.</p><p>Newton told clients in a note on Thursday that he is expecting the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> to see weakness heading into November as investor sentiment hits complacent levels just ahead of the general election on November 5.</p><p>"While intermediate-term bullish these remains very much intact, it's doubtful that US Equities continue to push up into and post-election without any consolidation," Newton said.</p><p>Newton said the potential correction he expects in the stock market is likely to be a "short-term correction only" and "not the start of a larger decline," playing into Fundstrat's Tom Lee's consistent message that investors should view any decline in the stock market as a "buy the dip" opportunity.</p><p>Newton is monitoring the 5,900 level on the S&amp;P 500 as potential resistance for the index. The S&amp;P 500 traded at around 5,850 on Friday.</p><p>"The issues with near-term complacency (as judged by low Equity put/call levels), waning breadth, poor seasonal trends and cyclical projections for November as well as SPX's largest sector, Technology, not performing well of late, are all reasons to be alert for possible trend change in the weeks to come," Newton explained.</p><p>One "key reason" Newton is turning bearish in the short-term is that the current rally in stocks that started in early August is 88 days long, which is exactly how long the April 19 to July 16 rally lasted before a sell-off materialized.</p><p>From a time perspective, that's "why this rally might 'run out of steam," Newton said.</p><p>Other areas of technical weakness that Newton is monitoring includes negative divergences in momentum as measured by the RSI and the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicators, a lack of bearish investors as measured by the AAII investor sentiment data, and seasonal cycles that show a peak in the stock market in mid-to-late October followed by a sell-off through November.</p><p>"This market has seemingly 'dodged a bullet' thus far during one of the historically worst periods during most election years. However, investors should not take this to mean that the coast is clear for an interrupted rally higher all year," Newton said.</p>
