Singapore-headquartered crypto exchange <keyword id="11987696" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zipmex" source="Orion">Zipmex</keyword> has announced to pause withdrawals until further notice, becoming another crypto company to bear the brunt of volatile market conditions.<br /><br />The digital assets exchange has operations in <keyword id="6356662" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="singapore" source="Orion">Singapore</keyword>, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand.<br /><br />In a tweet late on Wednesday, Zipmex said that due to a combination of circumstances "beyond our control including volatile market conditions, and the resulting financial difficulties of our key business partners, to maintain the integrity of our platform, we would be pausing withdrawals until further notice".<br /><br />Zipmex's goal last year was to become the largest digital exchange in the Asia Pacific region.<br /><br />In its last reported figure, Zipmex had transacted over $600 million in gross transaction volume since launching at the end of 2019.<br /><br />Crypto unicorn Babel suspended withdrawals in June, while one of the largest crypto lenders Celsius filed for bankruptcy this month.<br /><br />Vauld, another Singapore-based crypto platform, has also suspended withdrawals, trading and deposits.<br /><br />Several crypto platforms and exchanges have laid off employees as the global crypto market goes through a meltdown.<br />Last week, non-fungible token (<keyword id="4668945" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nft" source="Orion">NFT</keyword>) marketplace <keyword id="11928103" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="opensea" source="Orion">OpenSea</keyword>'s co-founder and CEO <keyword id="14188354" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="devin-finzer" source="Orion">Devin Finzer</keyword> announced that the platform is laying off about 20 per cent of its total employees.<br /><br />The Singapore-based 3AC filed for bankruptcy in the US earlier this month to protect its assets from creditors. 3AC defaulted on a more than $650 million loan provided by crypto broker <keyword id="14344592" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="voyager-digital" source="Orion">Voyager Digital</keyword>, which has also filed for bankruptcy.<br /><br />Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has laid off 2,000 employees while global crypto exchanges and firms including Coinbase, Gemini, Crypto.com and others announced to downsize their workforce.

Labor market conditions are on pace to return to pre-crisis levels in 10 months

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Rick Wilking/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>On Tuesday Apple reported its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-earnings-q2">first quarterly sales drop since 2003</a> as part of a pretty disappointing earnings report.</p><p>But if you hear CEO Tim Cook talk about it, Apple's poor report was due to economic conditions, as well as the fact that the smartphone market appears to be saturated, which means that fewer people are buying new iPhones. </p><p>"In terms of do I think the smartphone market is mature, I think that the market, as you know, is currently not growing," Cook said during a call with analysts to discuss Apple's earnings report. </p><p>A research note from analysts at Stifel put those conditions in stark relief with one stat: At Verizon and AT&amp;T, the two largest United States carriers, upgrade rates are at their lowest level since 2012. </p><p>Part of that might be the fact that Verizon and AT&amp;T have moved away in the United States from a subsidy model which significantly discounts phones in return for a two-year contract. Musk's tweets have prompted recent frenzies into the shares of video-game retailer GameStop and digital token Dogecoin. Robinhood reportedly restricts crypto trading temporarily 'due to extraordinary market conditions' as Bitcoin and Dogecoin spike sharply

<keyword id="3519905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-ceo" source="Orion">Paytm CEO</keyword> <keyword id="198636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="Orion">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> has said that macro conditions have affected global fintech companies, including <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, but the fintech industry will soon bounce back, driven by payments revenue.<br /><br />Speaking at IAMAI's 'India Digital Summit 2022', Sharma said, "We are a payments company and everyone understands it and payment has a derivative revenue line item in financial services and is driven by credit."<br /><br />"The success of Paytm will depend on what we do with monetisation, led by financial services. Payment is a revenue line item which is growing massively," he emphasised on Wednesday.<br /><br />Sharma said that globally, we probably went in at a time (for the public IPO) when QE, free money and many other parameters brought in a little bit of spookiness into the market, in terms of pricing.<br /><br />"Some South American companies are 70 per cent down. Well, that's not the reason for it completely, that's a macro reason," Sharma said.<br /><br />Globally, fintech players and emerging market players saw weak support from the markets as PayPal, Afterpay, Affirm, Square and many others were down almost 30 per cent on an average.<br /><br />Most recently, Grab, the Singapore-based company, made its market debut and is also a 'super app' saw its share price drop by over 20 per cent on listing day.<br /><br />Paytm made a big bang debut in the stock market. The company's $2.5 billion IPO was not just India's largest but also the largest APAC fintech IPO ever and also the second largest fintech IPO of 2021 globally.<br /><br />Overall, <keyword id="8069901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-ipo" source="Orion">Paytm IPO</keyword> is the fourth largest fintech stock debut.<br /><br />"Paytm, which opened at an offer price of Rs 2,150 braved the markets on a tough day and its share price was also impacted. But Paytm came out stronger than how most other fintech companies fared during the same time," said Dr Ravi Singh, Research Head, Share India.<br /><br />Analysts at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have assigned a 'BUY' rating to the Paytm stock with a target price of Rs Rs 1,630-Rs 1,875.<br /><br />The company during its second quarter earnings results showed how its revenue grew by 64 per cent on a yearly basis to Rs 10.9 billion.<br /><br />During the July-September quarter, Paytm saw its contribution profit grow to Rs 2.6 billion in Q2 FY 2022, year-on-year increase of 592 per cent. The contribution margin jumped to 24.0 per cent of revenue from 5.7 per cent the previous year.<br /><br />"Paytm has grown to be a financial services giant, which brings with it more monetizable opportunities. The pound has lost 18% of its value since the June referendum, dropping to 31-year lows, and concerns abound about what Brexit will mean for British jobs, foreign investment, and trade deals.</p><p>And when Britain actually goes through with it, the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> Treasury estimates that the "Hard Brexit" scenario Prime Minister Theresa May has indicated she is aiming for <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/british-government-hard-brexit-impact-on-the-uk-economy-2016-10">could cost the UK £66 billion ($81.2 billion) a year.</a></p><p>Misys builds banking software, and had planned to go public in an IPO on the London stock market that would have raised £500 million and valued it at around £3.5 billion. This is a billion less than originally planned - £4.5 billion - <a href="http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-3841900/Another-stock-market-float-peril-software-giant-Misys-forced-slash-price-30.html">after it slashed its valuation earlier in October</a>.</p><p>It's now bailing out altogether, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/uk-software-company-misys-abandons-ipo-plans-2016-10">saying in a statement</a>: "Despite encouraging institutional support Misys Group Limited has decided not to proceed with its potential initial public offering at the current time due to market conditions."</p><p>Right now the future of City of London, and particularly the banking sector, is up in the air, with the boss of the British Bankers Association saying this week that banks have their hands "<span>quivering over the relocate button." With many banks expected to move some operations out of the UK, Misys - which says it provides services to 48 of the world's top 50 banks - is thinking again about its IPO.</span></p><p>Interestingly, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/1137b0b6-97b7-11e6-a1dc-bdf38d484582">the Financial Times is reporting that there was a "lack of enthusiasm"</a> from investors in the company - and that its revenues are in decline. While Brexit may have had some impact, then, it could also be a convenient excuse as the company backtracks.</p><p>That said, Misys isn't the only company having second thoughts about going public in Britain. O2, owned by Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, has said that it will not go public this year, and is considering whether or not it will at all in 2017.</p><p>"An IPO is a real and distinct opportunity for this business," <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/oct/27/o2s-possible-ipo-depends-weakening-state-uk-economy">CEO Mark Evans said, The Guardian reports</a>. "It is being prepared for, as opposed to committed to. I'll draw that very clear distinction. What you've seen over the course of the last six to eight weeks is the market going into some flux. Softening."</p><p>Gym chain PureGym and car parts maker TI Fluid Systems have also cancelled plans to float, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/10/13/auto-supplier-ti-fluid-systems-becomes-the-latest-firm-to-scrap/">according to The Telegraph</a>. Tech companies looking to go public are worried about Britain's post-Brexit 'market conditions'

<p>However, fund manager <a href="http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc130114.htm">John Hussman warns</a> that the current market conditions have a history of being unfriendly to stocks.</p>
<p>From his latest <a href="http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc130114.htm"><em>Weekly Market Comment</em></a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Last week, the S&amp;P 500 came within 1% of reprising a syndrome that we’ve characterized as a <a href="http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc101213.htm">Who’s Who of Awful Times to Invest</a>, featuring a Shiller P/E over 18 (S&amp;P 500 divided by the 10-year average of inflation-adjusted earnings), the S&amp;P 500 more than 50% above its 4-year low and 8% above its 52-week smoothing, investment advisory bulls (<a href="http://www.investorsintelligence.com">Investors Intelligence</a>) over 47% with bears below 27%, and Treasury bond yields higher than 6 months earlier. This combination is one of numerous and nearly equivalent ways of defining an “overvalued, overbought, overbullish, rising-yields” syndrome. While there are certainly numerous conditions that are informative about stock market returns, and capture a much broader set of negative market outcomes, <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>I don’t know of any other syndrome of market conditions – however defined – that has been so consistently hostile for stocks over the past century</strong></span>.</p>

<p>Hussman lists 11 other periods when the markets exhibited similar characteristics to the markets today:</p>

HUSSMAN: The Current Syndrome Of Market Conditions Has A Long History Of Being Hostile For Stocks

Leading <keyword id="14181421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-lender" source="Orion">crypto lender</keyword> <keyword id="14181422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="celsius-network" source="Orion">Celsius Network</keyword> has announced to pause all withdrawals, swap and transfers between accounts due to "extreme market conditions".<br /><br />The decision led to a nearly 55 per cent crash in the price of its digital token 'CELL' to as low as 19 cents.<br /><br />"We are taking this action today to put Celsius in a better position to honour, over time, its withdrawal obligations," the crypto lender said in a statement late on Sunday.<br /><br />Celsius Network is a Blockchain-based lending platform that is accessible through a free mobile app.<br /><br />"Acting in the interest of our community is our top priority. In service of that commitment and to adhere to our risk management framework, we have activated a clause in our Terms of Use that will allow for this process to take place. Celsius has valuable assets and we are working diligently to meet our obligations," the company said.<br /><br />It said that the decision is taken in order to stabilise liquidity and operations "while we take steps to preserve and protect assets".<br /><br />Celsius was valued at $3.25 billion in November last year.<br /><br />According to its website, the CEL token promises "actual financial rewards", as much as 30 per cent extra returns weekly. Crypto lender Celsius Network pauses all withdrawals, transfers due to 'extreme' market conditions

<p>US-listed ETFs surpassed the $2 trillion in assets mark for the first time in December. BlackRock, along with other ETF providers such as Vanguard, have been beneficiaries of the growth.</p>

The Conditions For China's Next Bull Market May Be Falling Into Place

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>More cuts from the mining and energy sector. </p><p>In a <a href="http://investors.fcx.com/investor-center/news-releases/news-release-details/2015/Freeport-McMoRan-Declares-Quarterly-Cash-Dividend-on-Common-Stock/default.aspx">release on Tuesday morning</a>, $19 billion mining giant Freeport-McMoRan cut its dividend to $0.05 per share from $0.3125, an 84% reduction. </p><p>In a statement, the company said:</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;"><strong>"The reduction in the dividend is a prudent measure to strengthen our balance sheet during a period of volatile market conditions.</strong> As previously announced, our plans include significant reductions in capital spending and other costs and we are evaluating funding opportunities for capital expenditures in our oil and gas business. We will continue to take steps to enhance our financial position and to preserve our high quality resources for improved market conditions in the future. We are optimistic about our business, long-term commodity markets and the significant values embedded in our large-scale, long-lived assets. Mining giant Freeport-McMoRan slashes dividend by 84% citing 'volatile market conditions'

<p><a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-08-14/another-reason-to-fear-the-irs-misclassification-crackdowns">Misclassification of workers as freelancers and independent contractors</a> instead of full-time employees has resulted in billions of dollars in lost tax revenues.</p>
<p>Companies don't have to pay worker's compensation, unemployment, and disability taxes for freelance and contract employees (s0-called '1099 workers'). The problem is, if you're getting treated like other full-time salaried employees and you have the same assignments and tasks they do, you should be receiving those benefits.</p>
<p>Your employer should be paying those taxes.</p>
<p>“I think this is a massive problem that will be more evident in the coming years,"<a href="https://www.workmarket.com/">Jeff Ward, co-founder of </a><a href="https://www.workmarket.com/">Work Market</a>, tells Business Insider. Ward's company works with firms like Lockheed Martin and Omnicom to prevent misclassification of employees, which could trigger an audit by the <keyword id="6359816" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IRS">IRS</keyword>.</p>
<p>Remember when <a href="http://www.americanstaffing.net/staffingsmarts/l_intel.html">Microsoft had to pay the IRS $97 million</a> on a benefits case brought on by long-term temps who should have been classified as W-2 (full-time, salaried) workers? This is exactly the situation that Work Market is trying to prevent.</p>
<p>"You can 1099 anyone you want, but are they really an independent contractor? In the end, it's a judgment call by the government," he said.</p>
<p>How do you know the difference between a 1099 and a W-2 worker? Ward says there are a few questions you should ask yourself:</p>
<h2>1. Who does this person really work for?</h2>
<p>To figure out if an employee is really a <keyword id="85176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Freelancer">freelancer</keyword> or independent contractor, ask yourself: does she provide services for several companies at a time? Does she have an actual business? Does she have an office she works out of? Does she have marketing materials for her business? Or a business bank account?</p>
<p>If you answer "no" to these questions, she is likely a W-2 employee.</p>
<h2>2. How do you pay this person?</h2>
<p>Freelancers and contractors should be paid a fixed fee for assigned projects, says Ward. Unlike full-time salaried employees, a freelancer's financial situation should not be solely reliant on your business.</p>
<p>Avoid paying this person an hourly, daily, or weekly rate, reimbursals for expenses, or bonuses. You should also refrain from providing tools, such as computers, because if they are working on multiple projects at a time, freelancers should be able to provide their own equipment.</p>
<p>Basically, the more financial independence they have from your business, the less risk there is in misclassifying them.</p>
<h2>3. How do you interact with this person?</h2>
<p>You need to ask yourself how you're treating your freelancers. Do they have to be somewhere at a certain time? Do you check up on them often? If the answer to these questions is "yes,"they are likely a W-2 worker.</p>
<p>"An employee is told what to do and how to do it, and an independent contractor is told what needs to be done," Ward says.</p>
<h2>4. Is this person doing the same job as other full-time employees?</h2>
<p>Ward says if you're hiring freelancers so you don't have to hire more full-time employees, you're putting your business at risk of an audit.</p>
<p>"If he's an individual who comes into your office, is told what to do, sits in front of a computer next to a bunch of other workers, and does the same job they do, that's a problem," he says.</p>
<p>The IRS will want you to explain why one person is an employee and the other is not. If your answer is that you only needed the 1099 worker for six months, it won't be acceptable to the IRS.</p>
<p>"There's a massive movement in how things are going to get done," Ward says. "It's going to be a mess for awhile as all these things shift and change."</p>
