That's thanks to Donald Trump's recent election win, which <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/trump-trade-us-presidential-election-dollar-treasuries-stocks-crypto-djt-2024-11">sent stocks soaring</a> this week as traders anticipated a fresh economic agenda, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/bank-stocks-donald-trump-victory-reelection-wall-street-outlook-regulation-2024-11">looser regulatory environment</a>, and lower taxes. Small-cap stocks have done well so far this year, with the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/russell_2000">Russell 2000</a> up 18%. Still, the index of small-caps is trading at around 10 times forward median earnings, Lee noted, reflecting a lower valuation than the S&amp;P 500, which is trading at around 17 times forward earnings."I do think there's still a lot of upside," Lee said. The S&amp;P 500, meanwhile, could rally another 5%-10% through year-end, he said, pointing to the size of previous post-election rallies."Part of the reason investors are feeling so optimistic is that President Trump is entering office again, but this time with a lot more knowledge of how to build a cabinet and a team, and so in some ways this end up being more market-friendly," he added.Doubts, though, are swirling around some aspects of Trump's economic agenda, which experts have warned could <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-higher-inflation-fed-interest-rates-taxes-mortgage-rates-2024-11">stoke inflation and keep interest rates</a> higher for longer. Trump's policies were thought to be <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/022bb11b-c340-4059-b9b7-30481a02174c">more inflationary</a> than Harris' by 70% of polled economists, according to a survey conducted by the Financial Times and the University of Chicago.

Shares of Nvidia were down as much as 3% in Wednesday morning trades, a day after the stock experienced the largest one-day market value wipeout in history <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-stock-price-drops-ai-return-on-investment-chips-gpus-2024-9">when it fell nearly 10% on Tuesday.</a>Since the AI darling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-stock-price-outlook-buy-q2-earnings-decline-wall-street-2024-8">reported its second-quarter earnings last week,</a> the stock is down 16%, erasing $505 billion in market value.The DOJ's antitrust investigation into Nvidia is another concern for investors who worry about just how long the company's dominance of the AI chip sector can last.Nvidia captured over 90% of the GPU market in 2023, according to estimates from JPMorgan.The DOJ's subpoena includes "legally binding requests" that require recipients to provide information, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the investigation.This step from the government is a common precursor to a formal complaint being levied against a company that's under investigation. The DOJ also sent subpoenas to other technology companies as part of the probe.At issue with antitrust officials is whether Nvidia is making it harder for its customers to switch to competing suppliers, and whether the company punishes customers that don't exclusively use its AI-enabled GPU chips.According to the report, Nvidia's acquisition of RunAI in April is also under scrutiny. RunAI offers software to manage AI computations, and there are concerns that the tie-up will further strengthen Nvidia's ecosystem and make it more difficult for its customers to switch to a competing product.The DOJ's probe into Nvidia was initially launched in June.In its defense, Nvidia said its market dominance of the GPU market is based on the high quality of its products."Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them," Nvidia said in a statement to Business Insider.Nvidia's closest competitor in the GPU market is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amd-stock">AMD</a>, which released its own GPU accelerator chip, the MI300, late last year.AMD has said it expects to generate more than $4 billion in revenue from its suite of AI chips this year, which pales in comparison to the $100+ billion in revenue Nvidia expects to generate this year from its AI chips.Nvidia also faces competition from its own customers, as cloud hyperscalers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/msft-stock">Microsoft</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amzn-stock">Amazon</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/meta-stock">Meta Platforms</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/googl-stock">Alphabet</a> are internally developing their own AI chips that are specialized in completing inference computations, a key part of the AI workload.

The shares were trading at $218.25 Tuesday morning.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The recent surge in small-cap stocks appears unsustainable, according to Capital Economics' John Higgins.</li><li>Higgins said the fact that large-cap stocks are still near record highs suggests no rotation has taken place.</li></ul>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-rally-broadens-small-caps-another-win-for-bulls-2024-7">rapid and historic rally in small-cap stocks</a> over the past week is unsustainable.That's according to Capital Economics' chief market economist John Higgins, who said in a note on Wednesday that the relative outperformance of small-cap stocks compared to large-cap stocks is likely to be short-lived."A recent surge in the Russell 2000 after the US CPI report for June was published last week has prompted claims that we are entering the initial stage of a secular rotation into US small-cap stocks. We are not convinced," Higgins said.First, Higgins said the recent market action shouldn't be thought of as a rotation.A rotation implies that investors are selling large-cap stocks and using those proceeds to buy small-caps. But while large-caps have sat out the rally over the past week, they are still just a few percentage points below all-time highs."We would need to see more evidence of a sell-off in 'big tech' to be convinced that a rotation into small-cap stocks out of their larger counterparts was well and truly underway," Higgins said.Higgins made those comments while acknowledging <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-tighter-china-trade-restrictions-tsm-asml-nvda-2024-7">the sharp decline in mega-cap tech stocks on Wednesday,</a> sparked by comments from former President Donald Trump and the Biden administration considering restrictions on certain semiconductor companies.Much of the rally in small-cap stocks has been driven by the expectation that the Federal Reserve will soon lower interest rates.But Higgins isn't buying that argument either, noting that large-cap stocks outperformed their small-cap peers when the Fed cut interest rates in the mid-1990s, as well as when they cut interest rates in 2009 and 2019."We anticipate a bubble in the stock market continuing to inflate amid hype around AI, like one did in the second half of the 1990s around the internet. Back then, small-cap stocks generally underperformed their large-cap peers until mid-1999," Higgins said.Finally, Higgins highlighted that the biggest factor driving stock market performance is earnings, and there's no sign yet that small-cap stocks are going to overtake large-cap stocks in terms of earnings growth."It remains to be seen whether big tech firms will fail in general to continue to beat analysts' lofty expectations for their earnings," Higgins said.The first round of second-quarter earnings results for the mega-cap tech companies are set to drop next week with reports from Tesla and Alphabet.While Higgins isn't yet buying into the small-cap stock rally, Fundstrat's Tom Lee is.The strategist <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/small-caps-russell-2000-rally-outlook-sp500-selloff-fundstrat-tech-2024-7">told clients on Tuesday that he still sees a 40% rally occurring</a> in small-cap stocks after they've largely sat out the broader stock market rally this year."We have small caps even more oversold and valuations — whether you look at medium P/E, which is now at 10 times 2025 earnings — even lower," Fundstrat's Tom Lee told <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyHto5WWQ0k">CNBC</a>.
