It will see professional tennis plays paired up with other celebrities including Seal and Gigi Hadid. Nintendo just revealed a bunch of crazy-looking new games coming to the Switch in 2018

The deal essentially offers the Switch at its regular price of $300, and adds in a free game. For most Switch shoppers, this will be your best bet.</p><p>That's not a bad deal on its own. But the main competitors to the Switch, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, will both be on sale for $200 with a free game during the holidays. For $200, you can get a PlayStation 4 console with the sensational "Marvel's Spider-Man," or an Xbox One S console bundled with "Minecraft" and some extras. Those bundles are available now. </p><p>Nintendo is known for its reluctance to drop prices. But after a relatively slow year for the Switch, which didn't see many big-ticket exclusive releases, a juicier Black Friday sale could've brought more attention back to the young console. </p><p>Of note: Nintendo is also offering a $360 bundle that gives you the Switch console and copies of "Mario Tennis Aces" and the party game oddity "1-2-Switch." Given that the console is $300, "Mario Tennis Aces" is $60, and "1-2-Switch" is $40 or so, it's a decent deal - but by <a href="https://www.polygon.com/2018/8/15/17692748/mario-tennis-aces-nintendo-switch-bundle-price-deal-walmart">most reports</a>, "1-2-Switch" isn't necessarily worth your time. </p><p>Nintendo doesn't appear to be offering sale prices for any of its first-party Switch games either, including best-selling titles from last year like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Super Mario Odyssey." Kohl's is selling the Nintendo Switch on its own with a Turtle Beach headset and carrying case for $329, with $90 in Kohl's Cash as a bonus. The Kohl's Cash functions as a gift card, but cannot be used on the same day of the purchase, making it a good deal for the frequent Kohl's shopper.</p><p>If you're willing to buy a used system, Nintendo offers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nintendo-switch-refurbished-is-a-great-little-deal-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">refurbished Switch consoles</a> for $275, plus shipping. Refurbished Switch consoles come with a guarantee from Nintendo and carry a one-year manufacturer's warranty. The game's rating applicant is listed as "Epic Games Korea," and Nintendo Switch is the only platform it's being rated on.</p><p>Though "Fortnite" hasn't been announced as coming to Switch, the rating is as close as it gets to an official reveal without Epic Games just announcing it.</p><p>Games tend to pass through ratings boards like the ESRB in North America, PEGI in Europe, and the GRAC in South Korea as one of the last certifications before launch. And that's without mentioning games like "Splatoon 2," "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe," and "ARMS."</p><p>The second year, by comparison, is a massive drop-off.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p><p class="caption">"Kirby Star Allies" was the first major Nintendo release on the Switch in 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Games like "Kirby Star Allies" (above), "Captain Toad Treasure Tracker," and "Mario Tennis Aces" - highlights for 2018 thus far - have failed to excite Switch owners and critics alike. The biggest game to launch on Nintendo's Switch in 2018 is the biggest game in the world, "Fortnite," which can be played on nearly every other game platform.</p><p>As a result, sales of the Switch console in its second year are down: Nintendo sold 1.88 million consoles between April 1 and June 30, 2018. That's approximately 100K units less than the previous year's quarter.</p><p>At the same time, the latest financial data puts the Switch on track to reach 20 million total consoles sold worldwide any minute now - an incredibly impressive number for a console that's only been available for about 15 months. </p><p>And games like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" are selling incredibly well. For every two Switch consoles sold, one copy of "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" is sold.  </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p><p class="caption">Games like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" bolstered Nintendo's Switch line-up in its first year.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Long term, sales of "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" will no doubt continue.</p><p>It's a series with notoriously long legs, that anyone who buys a Nintendo Switch at any point may purchase. But Nintendo needs big <em>new</em> games to sustain and increase interest, and it needs them on an ongoing basis.</p><p>In 2018, Nintendo has failed at that objective thus far, and the second half of the year isn't looking much better.</p><p>Here's Nintendo's line-up for the rest of the year based on what we know right now:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">1. "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" - the next entry in the long-running Nintendo fighting game series which features an all-star cast of gaming characters. <br />2. "Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!" - an updated re-master of "Pokémon Yellow" that comes in two slightly different versions. <br />3. "Super Mario Party" - the next entry in the multiplayer-focused minigame series starring Nintendo characters.</p><p>Things could change between now and next March, when Nintendo's fiscal year ends. Nintendo could announce major new games coming to the Switch, and momentum could return.</p><p>That's unlikely for at least one good reason: Major game companies tend to announce holiday launches well ahead of time, allowing for a marketing build-up. Such is the case with Nintendo's holiday blockbuster duo of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" and the twin Pokémon "Let's Go!" games.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p><p class="caption">"Super Smash Bros. It arrives on December 7.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It was always going to be hard for Nintendo to top 2017 - a year with major new "Mario" and "Legend of Zelda" games - but 2018's comparative game line-up is a return to the Wii U years of B-tier games sporadically launching. At very least, it's a far cry from the near-monthly game release cadence of 2017.</p><p>Worse, Nintendo set a nearly impossible goal for itself: Executives projected sales of 20 million Switch units in the second fiscal year. As Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter told me in an email this week, "That sounds implausible to me."</p><p>He's got good reason to believe as much: Nintendo sold just 1.88 million consoles in its first financial quarter of the year, and would have to sell another <strong>18.12 million consoles</strong> in the next nine months to meet its own goal.</p><p>According to Pachter, Nintendo is betting on the twin release of "Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!" this November to massively bolster Switch console sales.</p><p>As Wedbush argued in a note following Nintendo's financials earlier this week, the "Let's Go!" Pokémon spin-off games are unlikely to move consoles the way Nintendo may expect. They're not main series Pokémon games - one is planned for the Switch in "late 2019" - and they're unlikely to attract huge audiences the way that "Pokémon GO" did. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p><p class="caption">In "Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!", you capture Pokémon in the same way you would in "Pokémon Go." But the overall game is a re-creation of "Pokémon Yellow."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"'Pokémon GO' is free-to-play and requires nothing more than a mobile phone or a tablet to play," the note said. "In the case of this fall's Pokémon titles, the prospective player will be required to buy both the game ($60 for one, or $120 for both) and the Switch hardware (another $299 at current prices)."</p><p>Given the barrier to entry being far higher - both from a price and gameplay perspective - it's unlikely that the "Let's Go!" Pokémon games will attract anywhere near as many players as the smartphone Pokémon game did. Thus, betting on them to help move tens of millions of Switch consoles over the next nine months is risky at best.</p><p>"I think that is exceptionally naïve," Pachter said. "But we'll see."</p><p>It's for these reasons that Nintendo finds itself in a complex position with the Switch. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Fans are really happy about Nintendo's E3 presentation, which lasted only 42 minutes but packed a punch.</strong></li><li><strong>Other game companies could learn a thing or two from how Nintendo approaches E3, the biggest industry event of the year.</strong></li></ul><p>Nintendo just delivered an incredible presentation at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/e3-2018">E3 2018</a> - and it pulled it off by keeping it simple, and focusing on games that are actually arriving in the next six months.</p><p>At first blush, <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/8qkays/super_smash_bros_ultimate_brings_back_every/">it looks like fans</a> are <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/8qiqkc/nintendo_direct_e3_2018_megathread/">really happy</a> about all the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/e3-2018-nintendo-switch-games-announcements-2018-6">announcements</a>:</p><p>- <strong>"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate"</strong> is the biggest Nintendo beat-em-up of them all, with every character from past games and tons of tweaks and new surprises. It's coming December 7.</p><p>- <strong>"Super Mario Party"</strong> brings back the popular minigame series in a big way, with some really creative new ways to play with others. It supports up to four people (this is a party, after all), and it arrives October 5.</p><p>- <strong>Plenty of third-party support for this Nintendo console is a very good look</strong>. The games announced included "Fortnite" (available for free starting today) from Epic Games, "Octopath Traveler" from Square Enix, "Wolfenstein II" from Bethesda, "Dragon Ball FighterZ" from Bandai Namco, "Hollow Knight" from Team Cherry, and several others.</p><p>But aside from the individual announcements, Nintendo had a great E3 presentation because it played to its strengths - something other game companies could focus on for future events.</p><h2><strong>A video presentation gives Nintendo the ultimate control</strong></h2><p>Nintendo doesn't approach E3 like other companies.</p><p>Over the past several days, we've seen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/e3-2018-microsoft-xbox-bethesda-ea-devolver-digital-2018-6#2-new-elder-scrolls-games-for-every-type-of-player-3">Microsoft</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/e3-2018-sony-playstation-ps4-ubisoft-square-enix-2018-6#check-out-the-newest-trailer-for-death-stranding-10">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/e3-2018-microsoft-xbox-bethesda-ea-devolver-digital-2018-6#2-new-elder-scrolls-games-for-every-type-of-player-3">Bethesda</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/e3-2018-sony-playstation-ps4-ubisoft-square-enix-2018-6#check-out-the-newest-trailer-for-death-stranding-10">Ubisoft</a>, and others present their new games at E3 by having live events, complete with executives introducing new titles on a physical stage, with a live audience to react to them.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Microsoft</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn't hold live press conferences at E3. At all.</p><p>Instead, <a href="https://youtu.be/akohTFyGu88">it films pre-recorded videos</a> and puts them online at a given time, which it appropriately calls "Nintendo Direct." Nintendo holds several of these "Direct" video announcements throughout the year, but E3 is where Nintendo focuses on the games coming out over the next year.</p><p>By filming its presentation ahead of time, Nintendo can control the overall flow of the show, from start to finish, by using clever editing, music, and more. Yes, there is a certain charm to live events, but as Nintendo has shown, the only thing that really matters in the end is whether or not people were impressed with what they saw. So whether it's live or pre-recorded, presentation matters - and Nintendo certainly benefitted (<a href="https://youtu.be/8k5lf8da1k4">and avoided some embarrassing hot mic situations</a>) by having more control.</p><h2><strong>Nintendo knows where its bread is buttered</strong></h2><p>Nintendo didn't talk about many games during its live stream, but it did focus on a handful of games almost exclusively.</p><p>Nintendo's video presentation for E3 2018 was 42 minutes long. Of that total time, Nintendo spent over half of it (24 minutes) talking about "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate."</p><p>Nintendo clearly knows where its bread is buttered: "Super Smash Bros." is one of the company's most popular game franchises, so it went into heavy detail on all the changes. Casual fans got a chance to learn more about the intricacies of the game, but it was really directed at the series' longtime, hardcore fan base. The decision to support the Nintendo GameCube controllers, for instance, which pro players insist on using when they play "Super Smash Bros." in competitive tournaments, is a nod to that.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Jonathan Alcorn</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Nintendo doesn't have any other game like "Super Smash Bros." To use a comparison to drive home this point, the second-biggest game announcement during Nintendo's Direct event was "Super Mario Party," and that was given less than two minutes' time. People don't play "Mario Party" for a living, but they do with "Super Smash Bros."</p><p>Rival game makers like Sony and Microsoft did unveil major exclusive games coming to their platforms this week - "The Last Of Us II" for PlayStation 4, and "Halo Infinite" for Xbox One - but those games only got several minutes of airtime each.</p><h2><strong>Nintendo knows people want games sooner rather than later</strong></h2><p>One of the biggest trends at this year's E3 is how many games are coming out next year or later. (Spoiler alert: It's most of them.)</p><p>Nintendo, on the other hand, spent most of its presentation talking about games coming out in the next six months.</p><p>"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" arrives in December. "Super Mario Party" arrives in October. "Mario Tennis Aces" arrives later this month. "Fortnite" and "Hollow Knight" arrive today.</p><p>On the other hand, most of the bigger games coming to rival consoles have vague release dates. We don't know when "Halo Infinite" is coming to Xbox One. "The Last Of Us" looks great, but we still don't have a date - it's probably sometime in 2019 though. Nintendo just blew the lid off at E3 2018 - and competitors could learn a thing or two

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Last month, like nearly every month before it, "Grand Theft Auto 5" was on the top 20 list of best-selling video games in the United States.&#xa0;</p><p>It appeared in third place, below "Mario Tennis Aces" and "God of War," and above "The Crew 2" - a trio of games that came out in 2018. "Grand Theft Auto 5" didn't come out in 2018, though: It came out in September 2013.</p><p>Next month, "GTA 5" turns five. For most games, that amount of time would make it a distant memory.&#xa0;</p><p>Instead, in a twist befitting a game centered on heists, "Grand Theft Auto 5" is on the verge of crossing 100 million units sold. "Grand Theft Auto 5" has made somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 billion <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-violent-videogame-has-made-more-money-than-any-movie-ever-2018-04-06">according to one report</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>"What can I say? We're extraordinarily grateful to our colleagues at Rockstar Games for this incredible creative achievement, and to the entire team responsible for physical/digital distribution, and marketing of course," Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told me in a phone interview on Monday.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Zelnick runs the publisher that owns Rockstar Games, the legendary game development studio behind blockbuster franchises like "GTA" and "Red Dead Redemption."</p><p>"We would never have expected to sell something like 100 million units and still be in the market and still be active," Zelnick said.</p><p>He's right to be shocked: It's more or less unprecedented, even for mega-hit franchises like "GTA." Zelnick pointed out that the entire "GTA" franchise has sold "something like 285 million units" - "Grand Theft Auto 5" makes up nearly 100 million of that <em>alone</em>.</p><p>It's bumping up against the likes of "Minecraft" and "Tetris" for title of all-time best-selling video game. That's due to its extraordinarily long legs - the game keeps selling over time.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, offered another incredible statistic: Since "GTA 5" went on sale in September 2013, it has appeared in the top 20 best-selling games list 57 out of 58 times.</p><p>"The only time it didn't was October 2014 when it hit at #21," NPD Group's Mat Piscatella told me in an email. "No other title comes anywhere near close. Its performance is just other worldly."&#xa0;</p><p>There are a few reasons for that:</p><ul><li>"GTA 5" is an excellent game with an incredibly recognizable name - if you're buying a game console and are looking for a first game, it's a strong choice.</li><li>It's available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. If you bought a game console or a gaming PC in the last five years, chances are you also got "GTA 5."</li><li>Rockstar Games has carefully updated the game over the past five years, first bringing it to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014, then to PC in 2015. A "Premium Edition" launched earlier this year as well, which offers additional content.</li><li>It's got a massive online component, known as "GTA Online," that people love.</li><li>It's an&#xa0;<em>extremely</em> shareable game - GIFs and videos of "GTA 5" are still regularly shared online.</li></ul><p>"GTA 5" has been quietly dominating for years at this point.</p><p>"Our own approach here is - probably to a fault - we don't engage in self-congratulatory behavior," Zelnick said.</p><p>Outside of financial calls and filings, where Take-Two makes disclosures to investors and the government, information on Rockstar Games and its products tends to remain private.&#xa0;</p><p>Such is the case with "GTA Online," for instance, the multiplayer component of "GTA 5."&#xa0;It's clear that the service is popular, but it's not clear how many of those 100 million copies sold are people playing online.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>When pressed on details regarding "GTA Online" player numbers, Zelnick deflected. "We don't really give out that kind of information," he said. The closest he would get is saying it has "a huge audience." Rockstar Games <a href="https://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/60332/Lampadati-Viseris-Out-Now-Plus-Double-GTA-RP-on-Lester-Contact-Mission">said in January</a> that "GTA Online" had more players in December 2017 than any previous time; when asked on Monday, Rockstar representatives declined to offer an update.</p><p>One thing is clear: The number of players is significant enough for Rockstar to continue producing massive new expansions for "GTA Online."</p><p>The latest update, "After Hours," is far from the last, Zelnick said. "There's plenty more content to come."
