<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source">AP Photo </p></div></div>One summer some 60-odd years ago, Bill Hicks safely crossed a street in Raleigh, N.C. and was forever changed.</p>
<p>Having grown up in a "Roosevelt-liberal" household, with a father who taught philosophy at North Carolina State, Hicks was perhaps naturally inclined to be sympathetic toward instances of injustice.</p>
<p>He spent his summers playing baseball with kids from the working class-but-upscale Black neighborhood of Oberlin.</p>
<p>One afternoon, they started in to buy drinks at a store to cool off.</p>
<p>"We walked over to Hillsborough Street — the big street across from North Carolina State — and they sent me into a little store to buy everybody drinks because they knew they couldn't go in," Hicks, now 70, told us by phone recently. "And I didn't even know that until they said that, so that kind of thing struck me as being pretty bad."</p>
<p>The moment helped catalyze a lifelong concern for equal rights, one that a few years later led him to board a Trailways bus as part of the University of North Carolina's Student Peace Union one bright August morning to take the five hour drive  to Washington.</p>
<p>We recently tracked down Hicks, who would go on to join highly successful folk revival group <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-red-clay-ramblers-mn0000448744/biography">The Red Clay Ramblers</a>, to discuss his recollection of the March, which took place fifty years ago Thursday.</p>
<p>Hicks admits his memory of the event itself is spotty, but he referred us to a friend who vouched for his attendance.</p>

"I felt a sense of brotherhood and solidarity with all the people around me, that I had people I didn't know, would never know their names, never see again, but certainly a sense that we were all together."</p>
<p>We spoke with several other attendees, and many agreed with Hicks that the event itself, while important at the time, was not regarded with anywhere near the same reverence as it is today.</p>
<p>"It’s a symbol — it’s much easier for people to look at something defined and specific," Hicks said. "The <keyword id="1830203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="March-on-Washington">March on Washington</keyword> was just basically one day — a lot of terrific photographs and a terrific speech, and maybe some other speeches we don't remember — Bob Dylan was singing — it was a moment. It was a Super Bowl of civil rights."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Hicks recalls returning to Chapel Hill late that night, with everyone sleeping on the way back — a somewhat apt detail to recall given what he encountered when he returned. </span></p>
<p>"The movement [in Chapel Hill] had been kind of betrayed by liberal leaders who thought they could convince segregated business owners to stop being segregated — and they didn't manage to do that. So I think there was a lot of bitterness, not about the march, but just that, 'Well, we did this still nothing happening... ' "</p>
<p><span></span>Hicks elaborated in a follow-up email:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>There was a strong feeling in Movement circles that had we simply continued to have marches and sit-ins, with no abatement, the recalcitrant businesses would have given in.  This feeling of betrayal allowed the remaining committed protesters to become more frustrated, and the protests to become in a way more radical in the fall, with big sit-ins closing the streets.  This, in turn, allowed elected officials and police authorities to make a decision to arrest leaders, and the leaders were eventually sentenced to prison, and then paroled with a  ban on even living in NC. </span></p>
<p>Indeed, just four months later, he witnessed the ultimate symbol of Southern backwardness.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"I went down to the capital in December, sat on a bench and watched a Klan rally march thru capitol, everybody was just fine with that."</p>
<p dir="ltr">The real, and most tragic, turning point of the civil rights era occurred in Memphis on April 4, 1968, he says.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Fifty years after the March, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Hicks remains dismisses the premise that its goals are no longer relevant.</span>"Only 5 years later King’s voice was gone, then you end up with sort of weaker voices, and that matters to continuing to get things done or just to convince people."</p>
<p>"It blows my mind that the Supreme Court would rule the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional this past spring," he says. "I mean that was one of the major milestones, and it was a way that people who had been disenfranchised got franchised.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"I just saw a story in North Carolina this morning a Black lady who’s been voting 75 years won't be able to vote under the new law because her birth certificate doesn't say exactly the same thing as her driver's license.</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">It doesn't take account of the fact that basically poor people, black and white too, who don't best advantages don't end up with great credentials all time, but she’s already voted. So all of it is just terrible.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr">"I'm hoping there will be some kind of reaction."</p>

How A White Kid From Segregated North Carolina Ended Up At The March On Washington

<ul class="summary-list"><li>March Madness is back, and it's time to build your bracket.</li><li>We went through 30 years of brackets to help you avoid making a costly mistake as you build yours this year.</li></ul><p>Building a March Madness bracket is an inexact science.</p><p>Given that the chances of building a truly perfect bracket are <a href="https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/bracketiq/2022-03-10/perfect-ncaa-bracket-absurd-odds-march-madness-dream#:~:text=As%20such%2C%20the%20number%20of,correctly%201%20in%209.2%20quintillion." target="_blank" rel="noopener">roughly 1 in 120,000,000,000</a>, your best bet is not to strive for perfection, but rather to go for "pretty good."</p><p>With this in mind, we've gone through the past 30 years of NCAA men's tournament brackets, dating back to 1991, to come up with five of the biggest mistakes to avoid when building your bracket.</p><p>Armed with the knowledge of history, your bracket will have a chance to contend in any pool.</p><h2>1. Don't be afraid to pick some upsets in the early rounds</h2><p>If you haven't watched a ton of college basketball all season, it can be tempting to back the higher seeds throughout the early rounds of the tournament. They're ranked higher because they're better right?</p><p>While that's true, the early rounds are where some of the most memorable upsets of the tournament happen — it's called March <em>Madness</em> after all — so don't shy away from picking a few upsets in the early rounds.</p><div type="image" title="South Dakota State guard Alex Arians grabs a rebound against Alabama." height="1783" width="2377" msid="90207484" hostid="261"></div><p>Over the past 30 tournaments, 5-12 matchups and 6-11 matchups have played closer than you might think.</p><p>12-seeds have advanced out of the first round at a 35.8% clip, dating back to 1991, making them one of the most analyzed first-round matchups every year. Since 2012, 12-seeds have gone 15-21 against 5-seeds in the first round, bumping their win percentage up to 41.6% over that span.</p><p>6-11 matchups can be just as volatile. While 6-seeds have won over 11-seeds 65% of the time since 1991, they've gone 4-0 just once since 2004. Further, in four of the past seven tournaments, 6-11 matchups have been split 2-2. The margins dividing these teams are thin, and in one game, the underdogs have a chance.</p><p>The 4-13 matchups can also present quite a bit of chaos. Over the past 30 men's tournaments, 13-seeds have pulled off the first-round upset 21.6% of the time — nearly averaging one a tournament. In two of the past three years, 13-seeds have split their matchups, going 2-2 in the first round.</p><p>The top seeds in each region are a pretty safe bet to advance through the first round. Just once in the history of the men's tournament has a 1-seed lost to a 16-seed in the first round, and 15-over-2 upsets happen just 7.5% of the time.</p><h2>2. Don't take your Cinderella team too far</h2><p>While your bracket would be incomplete without a few early upsets, it's also important to mitigate your risk a bit when picking your Cinderella teams. A 12-, 13-, or 14-seed can spring an upset or two to make it to the Sweet Sixteen, but reaching the Final Four is another story.</p><div type="image" title="Loyola-Chicago's Lucas Williamson celebrates during a game against Drake." height="1783" width="2377" msid="90207487" hostid="261"></div><p>The successful Cinderellas like Loyola-Chicago just a few years ago stand out in our minds with their incredible runs, but for every sleeper that reaches the Final Four, there are dozens of others that never escape the first weekend of the tournament.</p><p>In the past 30 years of the tournament, no team lower than an 11-seed has reached the Final Four.</p><h2>3. But don't get too conservative with your Final Four</h2><p>Rather than getting over-eager about your sleeper picks making it all the way to the final weekend of play, your best bet is targeting a mid-range team to make a run.</p><p>In the past four tournaments, each Final Four has had exactly one representative that was seeded lower than 3 — one 5-seed, one 7-seed, and two 11-seeds. If you can find the right team around that sweet spot — No. 5 UConn, No. 5 Iowa, and No. 7 Ohio State jump out as potential contenders — you could end up as the only one in your bracket pool to nail the Final Four.</p><div type="image" title="Connecticut's Tyrese Martin reacts during a game against Seton Hall." height="1781" width="2375" msid="90207491" hostid="261"></div><p>One way of thinking about building your Final Four is to go by historical average. Add up the seeds of the four teams you have in your Final Four, and if it's somewhere around 11, you're in pretty good shape. Over the past 30 tournaments, the average total seeding of the Final Four has hovered just over 11. </p><p>You can get to 11 in any number of ways — a 1-, 1-, 3-, and 6-seed feels pretty good, for instance. If your total is lower than 11, it means you're playing a bit more conservatively. Higher than 11, and your picks lean toward the risky end.</p><p>One thing you should likely avoid is picking all 1-seeds to reach the Final Four. Again, this is Madness. Upsets happen. Over the past 30 brackets, all four 1-seeds have reached the Final Four in the same tournament just once.</p><h2>4. Don't get cute with your champion pick</h2><p>Once you've figured out your Final Four, you'll have to decide on a champion. When you do so, please, pick a 1-seed.</p><p>In the past 30 tournaments, a 1-seed has come out as champion a remarkable 21 times. 2-seeds have won four titles, 3-seeds three, and then one 4-seed and one 7-seed have rounded out the past 30 champions.</p><p>1-seeds have had great success in making the final over the past few years as well. In three of the past six tournaments, the championship game has been contested between two 1-seeds.</p><div type="image" title="Drew Timme of Gonzaga celebrates a win over San Francisco." height="1783" width="2377" msid="90207494" hostid="261"></div><p>Simply put, while there's plenty of madness leading up to the championship, the cream has a tendency of rising to the top in the end.</p><p>When building your bracket, it actually might be best to work backwards. Pick one 1-seed from each side of the bracket to meet in the final, with one prevailing over the other. That will get you to half of your Final Four. From there, pick your favorite 2-6 seeds from the other two regions that you think can make a run in the tournament. That should give you a good mix of top seeds and mid-tier sleepers heading into the final weekend of action.</p><h2>5. Don't let some blogger (me) tell you how to build your bracket</h2><p>Ultimately, it's your bracket! Do what you want to do. There are so many things to consider when building a bracket — what teams you've watched this year, personal grudges, ensuring that your bracket finishes better than that of Gary in accounting.</p><p>I'm just some guy! Who spent too long looking at the 30 years' worth of brackets in hopes of predicting the future! We can try our best to come up with a perfect system, but ultimately, the games will be decided on the court rather than my silly spreadsheet.</p><p>If an 8-seed speaks to you and you think they're going to win it all, go for it. You'll regret it if you don't.</p><p>But if you are looking for a place to start, hopefully these tips can get your bracket moving in the right direction.</p>

5 mistakes to avoid when building your March Madness bracket

New Delhi, <keyword id="9164750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manufacturing-activities" source="Orion">Manufacturing activities</keyword> in India touched a three-month high in March boosted by faster expansions in new orders and output amid demand resilience and easing of cost pressures, according to a monthly survey. The seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose from 55.3 in February to 56.4 in March, signalling the strongest improvement in operating conditions in 2023 so far. <br /><br /> The <keyword id="17021004" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="March-PMI-data" source="Orion">March PMI data</keyword> pointed to an improvement in overall operating conditions for the 21st straight month. In PMI parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 indicates contraction. <br /><br /> "Underlying demand for Indian goods remained strong in March, underscored by the quickest upturn in factory orders for three months. Hence, production continued to expand at a robust clip and firms stepped up their stock building efforts," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. <br /><br /> According to the survey, input cost inflation retreated to its second-lowest mark in two-and-a-half years in March as pressure on supply chains subsided and the availability of raw materials improved. <br /><br /> Subsequently, goods producers concentrated on rebuilding their stocks. Robust increases in buying levels in recent months supported a near-record accumulation of input inventories in March. <br /><br /> On the prices front, close to 96 per cent firms signalled no change in cost burdens since February. <br /><br /> "Although selling prices increased further at the end of the last fiscal quarter, the rate of inflation was moderate and broadly similar to February. Several panellists reportedly left their fees unchanged amid efforts to boost sales," Lima said. <br /><br /> On the jobs front, goods producers kept payroll numbers broadly unchanged in March, as outstanding business volumes rose at a marginal rate that was the weakest in a year. <br /><br /> "Companies reported abundant capacity among themselves and their suppliers. Pending workloads expanded only marginally in March, hindering job creation," Lima said. <br /><br /> Going ahead, Indian manufacturers expect improved customer relations, new product releases and advertising to support sales and subsequently production over the course of the coming 12 months. <br /><br /> "Although manufacturers were upbeat towards future new orders, they somewhat doubted that inflation would continue to recede. Such worries restricted optimism towards output prospects," Lima said. <br /><br /> The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank will be meeting for three days on April 3, 5 and 6 and on Thursday will come out with the first bi-monthly monetary policy for fiscal 2023-24. <br /><br /> The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already increased the repo rate by a total of 250 basis points since May in a bid to contain inflation though it has continued to remain above the central bank's comfort zone of 6 per cent for most of the time. <br /><br /> The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation was 6.52 per cent in January and 6.44 per cent in February.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bill Walton has graduated from NBA legend to the most perplexing commentator in basketball.</li><li>Walton made a rather absurd Final Four prediction involving his beloved Pac 12 basketball.</li><li>Now with only eight teams remaining in March Madness, Walton looks like a genius.</li></ul><p>Bill Walton knows ball.</p><p>The NBA legend-turned-college basketball commentator is one of the most compelling, if perplexing, figures in a sport that is full of characters.</p><p>Walton's take on color commentary is that it does not have to always be about basketball, often enlightening viewers with facts about <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=381OiBkie2U" target="_blank" rel="noopener">art, geography, and some psychedelic philosophizing</a> in the middle of a late-night Pac-12 broadcast on ESPN.</p><p>Heading into March Madness this year, Walton made a fairly bold prediction for his Final Four, refusing to pick any No. 1 seed to reach the semifinals.</p><p>Instead, as his play-by-play partner Dave Pasch revealed at the start of the tournament, Walton picked five Pac-12 teams to reach the final weekend of action.</p><p>As Pasch points out, there were a few issues with Walton's predictions that are immediately apparent. His Final Four featured five teams, including twice putting two teams from the same region of the bracket into the national semifinals.</p><p>But beyond that, these were some pretty bold picks. The highest-ranked seed of the bunch was No. 5 Colorado, followed by No. 6 USC, No. 7 Oregon, and No. 12 Oregon State. UCLA, an 11-seed heading into the tournament, even had to survive a First Four matchup to make the true bracket field of 64.</p><p>One could chalk Walton's predictions up to blatant homerism, but now with just eight teams remaining in the tournament, it is Walton who is getting the last laugh.</p><p>Thus far, the Pac-12 is 13-2 through 15 games played in March Madness, and one of those two losses came in a Sweet 16 battle between two Pac-12 schools - USC and Oregon. Heading into the start of the Elite Eight on Monday night, the Pac-12 is represented by three of the eight schools remaining.</p><p>On Sunday morning, Walton took a bit of a victory lap on ESPN's College Gameday while previewing the day's coming action.</p><p>It's going to be tough for the Pac-12 to keep the good vibes going through the Elite Eight all the way to the Final Four - all three Pac-12 teams are significant underdogs in their next games - but given the run they've been on so far this tournament, there's no reason to stop believing now.</p>

Rather than call a timeout, the Irish ran the floor before Rutgers could set their defense, with Blake Wesley driving for a layup to tie the game again with just four seconds left in the first extra period.</p><p>Double-overtime, here we come.</p><p>In the waning seconds of double-overtime, the clock in Dayton ticked past midnight, meaning it was officially St. Patrick's Day.</p><p>The Irish responded in kind, with Paul Atkinson Jr. following a miss by Blake Wesley with an offensive rebound and putting in the game-winning basket with just two seconds left on the clock.</p><p>Rutgers wouldn't get a shot off to respond.</p><p>After the game, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey was elated with his team's performance.</p><p>With the win, Notre Dame reaches the field of 64 as an 11-seed. <ul class="summary-list"><li>March Madness is back, and it's time to build your bracket.</li><li>When looking for an upset, it can be helpful to look to Las Vegas for guidance.</li></ul><p>No <a href="https://www.insider.com/march-madness-bracket-printable-mens-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">March Madness bracket</a> would be complete <a href="https://www.insider.com/5-mistakes-to-avoid-when-building-your-march-madness-bracket-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">without a few upsets</a>.</p><p>Year after year, the first round of the tournament is defined by the shocking Cinderellas that seem to come out of nowhere to outperform the expectations of those watching at home.</p><p>But sometimes, those upsets are not so shocking in the eyes of bookmakers, setting the odds on games. By taking a look at the spreads set by sportsbooks for the first set of games, we can get a glimpse of some of the best early upset candidates.</p><p>Below are five games in the men's tournament that Las Vegas says are much closer than the bracket would have you believe.</p><h2>No. 11 Michigan over No. 6 Colorado State</h2><div type="image" title="Michigan guard Eli Brooks shoots against Indiana." height="1781" width="2375" msid="90208655" hostid="261"></div><p>Despite the fact that Michigan is a lower seed than Colorado State, the Wolverines are 2.5-point favorites over the Rams in their first-round matchup.</p><p>This shouldn't come as a total surprise — games between 6-11 teams have been pretty evenly split in recent years, and dating back to 2014, 11-seeds have actually had a slight advantage over 6-seeds in these games.</p><p>If you were only going by what you see on the bracket, you might pencil in Colorado State without thinking twice about it, but given how Las Vegas thinks this game is going to go, it's technically higher-seeded Colorado State that would be pulling off an upset if it won.</p><h2>No. 10 Loyola-Chicago over No. 7 Ohio State</h2><p>Loyola-Chicago has caused some chaos in the tournament over the past few years, beginning with its Cinderella run to the Final Four as an 11-seed in 2018. Last year, the Ramblers kept the party going, reaching the Sweet 16 as an 8-seed and taking down No. 1 Illinois along the way.</p><div type="image" title="Loyola-Chicago's Lucas Williamson celebrates during a game against Drake." height="1783" width="2377" msid="90208656" hostid="261"></div><p>Given their recent success in the tournament, the Ramblers aren't sneaking up on anyone this year, but you still might be surprised to learn that they are actually a 1.5-point favorite over Ohio State in their first-round game.</p><p>While 7-10 upsets aren't too uncommon — 10-seeds have won at a 42.5% clip over the past 30 tournaments — it's impressive that Loyola-Chicago is so respected by bookmakers to be favored over a powerhouse school with a higher seed.</p><h2>No. 13 South Dakota State over No. 4 Providence</h2><p>This might be the most intriguing difference between spread and seeding that we see all tournament. As a 13-seed, South Dakota State is just a three-point underdog against Providence, according to sportsbooks.</p><div type="image" title="South Dakota State forward Douglas Wilson shoots a layup against North Dakota State." height="1783" width="2377" msid="90208657" hostid="261"></div><p>While the Jackrabbits are still technically 'dogs, if you compare their odds to those of the other 13-seeds in the field, it's clear that Las Vegas sees them a step ahead of the competition. No. 4 Illinois is a 7.5-point favorite over No. 13 Chattanooga in the South region. No. 4 UCLA is a whopping 14-point favorite over Akron in the East.</p><p>It's also worth noting that 13-seeds have been on a bit of an upset run in recent years. Over the past three tournaments, 13-seeds have more upsets over 4-seeds in the first round (5) than 12-seeds do over 5-seeds (4). Given all of the attention paid to 5-12 matchups, it might be worth zigging against the zag and backing a lurking 13-seed this year instead.</p><h2>No. 13 Vermont over No. 4 Arkansas</h2><p>Vermont presents another very interesting 4-13 matchup against Arkansas in the first round. Like South Dakota State, the Catamounts are technically underdogs in this game, but the Razorbacks are only being given a 5-point edge by bookmakers in this contest.</p><p>Again, 13-seeds have had more success in recent tournaments than you might think, and given the tough outlook of the other two 13-seeds in this year's bracket, Vermont and South Dakota State both present an opportunity for bracket chaos.</p><p>The Catamounts can play, as they showed in an absolutely dominating 82-43 win over UMBC in the America East final just a few days ago. If they can bring that same energy against Arkansas this weekend, there's no reason to think they couldn't make a run to the Sweet 16.</p><h2>No. 14 Colgate over No. 3 Wisconsin</h2><p>If you are looking for an upset that would 1) really impress everyone in your bracket pool and 2) actually has a chance of hitting, 14th-seeded Colgate is likely your best bet.</p><div type="image" title="Colgate's Jack Ferguson makes a pass against Arkansas." height="1781" width="2375" msid="90208658" hostid="261"></div><p>Colgate is clearly not the favorite against Wisconsin, but given that the Raiders are only 7.5-point underdogs against the Badgers, this game could be closer than the bracket would have you believe. Further, if you look at the other 3-14 matchups this year, this game is expected to be the closest by a longshot.</p><p>No. 3 Texas Tech is a 15.5-point favorite over No. 14 Montana State in the West region; No. 3 Tennessee is a 17-point favorite over No. 14 Longwood in the South; and No. 3 Purdue is a 16.5-point favorite over No. 14 Yale in the East.</p><p>While 3-14 upsets aren't the most common you will see, they do happen. Over the past 30 tournaments, 14-seeds have advanced out of the first round in just over 14% of games. Since 2016, just one 14-seed has pulled off an opening upset. If you think we're due for an extra bit of Madness this year, Colgate could be your answer.</p>

It is based simply on how the tournament selection committee fills out the bracket.</p><p>There are three steps for the committee in filling out the <keyword id="13357676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ncaa-tournament" source="Orion">NCAA tournament</keyword> bracket:</p><ol><li>Select the 36 at-large teams.</li><li>Seed every team 1-68.</li><li>Place those teams in the bracket.</li></ol><p>Once the 68 teams are seeded, the bottom four teams (Seeds 65-68 overall) get placed in the First Four. Those generally go to the lowest-seeded teams to receive automatic bids to the Big Dance by winning their conference tournaments.</p><p>The other First Four teams consist of the four lowest-ranked teams from group of teams receiving at-large bids. Those teams (typically seeded 11th or 12th) will face each other, with the winners getting to meet 5- or 6-seeds in the next round.</p><p>In other words, the First Four games are played by the four lowest-seeded automatic bids and the four lowest-seeded at-large bids.</p><p>It's that simple.</p><p>By doing this, the selection committee is hoping not to punish too many smaller schools, which typically earn their way in by winning a conference tournament. </p><p>Interestingly, how the actual match-ups in the First Four are determined is not as you would assume. From the NCAA:</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;">The last four at-large teams on the overall seed list, as well as teams seeded 65 through 68, will be paired to compete in the First Four games on Tuesday and Wednesday following the announcement of the field. (If allowed, the last at-large team on the seed list will be paired with the second-to-last at-large team on the seed list. The other First Four games will consist of the third-to-last at-large team on the seed list playing the fourth-to-last at-large team on the seed list, as well as seed 65 versus 66; and seed 67 versus 68).</p><p>That is, if you rank the First Four teams, No. 1 plays No. 2, No. 3 plays No. 4, for both the at-large teams and the overall bottom seeds. </p><p>Being a First Four team is not always a bad way to start. A team playing in the First Four has advanced to at least the Round of 32 in nine of the 10 men's tournaments since first introduced in 2011. That includes Virginia Commonwealth, which went to the Final Four in 2011, and UCLA, which reached the national semis in 2021.</p><p>This is just the second year that the women's side will hold First Four games. </p>
