According to Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, <keyword id="21214947" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indias-EV-landscape" source="Orion">India's EV landscape</keyword> is on the cusp of significant growth. "Government initiatives such as the <keyword id="8941225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI-scheme" source="Orion">PLI scheme</keyword> for <keyword id="16365365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Advanced-Chemistry-Cells" source="Orion">Advanced Chemistry Cells</keyword> (ACC) and the recent reduction in import duties on EVs under $35,000 to 15 per cent are game changers," said Lee. All this not only opens doors for <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> but also signals India's readiness to welcome significant investments and foster a new ecosystem for EVs and their component suppliers. "It is a clear sign that India's journey to become a major player in the global <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV" source="Orion">EV</keyword> market is accelerating," Lee noted. India's EV landscape set to be transformed with key govt initiatives: Industry experts

Chip maker <keyword id="28115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intel" source="Orion">Intel</keyword> on Friday announced its collaboration with eight domestic Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to accelerate manufacturing of "Make-in-India" laptops. The companies Intel has collaborated with include Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. This initiative underscores Intel's dedication to accelerate technology-led growth in alignment with the <keyword id="6354869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-india" source="Orion">Make in India</keyword> initiative. "I am very pleased that global organisations like Intel are partnering with India, helping to build and catalyse the electronics manufacturing ecosystem for laptops and compute," Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said in a statement. Intel partners with eight domestic manufacturers for 'Make in India' laptops

New Delhi, The Union <keyword id="19901283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet" source="keywords">Cabinet</keyword>, chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>, on Thursday approved the establishment of three semiconductor fabrication (fab) units that will start construction within the next 100 days and generate direct employment of 20,000 advanced technology jobs and nearly 60,000 indirect jobs. The semiconductor fab with 50,000 wafers per month capacity will be set up by Tata Electronics Private Ltd (TEPL) in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, in Dholera, Gujarat. This fab will be constructed with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, said Union IT Minister <keyword id="19904138" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashwini-vaishnaw" source="keywords">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword>. This fab will cover high-performance compute chips with 28 nm technology, and power management chips for electric vehicles (EVs), telecom, defence, automotive, consumer electronics, display, power electronics, etc, according to the government. Another semiconductor assembly, testing, monitoring, and packing (ATMP) unit with a capacity of 48 million per day by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in Morigaon, Assam, will be set up with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. TSAT semiconductor is developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including flip chip and ISIP (integrated system in package) technologies. It will cover sectors like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom and mobile phones, etc, according to the government. The third semiconductor ATMP unit for specialised chips will be set up by <keyword id="20541983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cg-power" source="keywords">CG Power</keyword>, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and <keyword id="20776317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stars-microelectronics" source="keywords">Stars Microelectronics</keyword>, Thailand in Sanand, Gujarat. "This unit with a capacity of 15 million per day will be set up with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore," the Centre said. The CG power semiconductor unit will manufacture chips for consumer, industrial, automotive, and power applications. Within a very short time, the India Semiconductor Mission has achieved four big successes. With these units, the semiconductor ecosystem will get established in India. India already has deep capabilities in chip design. With these units, the country will develop capabilities in chip fabrication. Advanced packaging technologies will be indigenously developed in India with Thursday's announcement. These units will accelerate employment creation in downstream automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, and other semiconductor consuming industries. The 'Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem' in India was notified in 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. In June last year, the Cabinet had approved the proposal of US-based Micron for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. Construction of this unit is progressing at a rapid pace and a robust semiconductor ecosystem is emerging near the unit.

Cabinet approves 3 semiconductor fab units, to generate 80,000 jobs

Up to 3.72 lakh <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> will be supported under the four-month <keyword id="20961992" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-Mobility-Promotion-Scheme" source="keywords">Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme</keyword> (<keyword id="20951149" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EMPS" source="keywords">EMPS</keyword>) being implemented between April and July with an outlay of Rs 493.55 crore, the government said on Tuesday. Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) - 2024 will provide further impetus to the <keyword id="20156633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-mobility" source="keywords">green mobility</keyword> and development of electric vehicle (EV) <keyword id="20071405" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-ecosystem" source="keywords">manufacturing ecosystem</keyword> in the country. The maximum number of electric vehicles to be supported under the scheme stands at 3,72,215, including 3,33,387 electric <keyword id="20201345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheelers" source="keywords">two-wheelers</keyword>, 13,590 e-rickshaws or e-carts and 25,238 electric three-wheelers in the L5 category, according to figures shared by the <keyword id="20021346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Heavy-Industries" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Heavy Industries" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Heavy Industries">Ministry of Heavy Industries</keyword>. "EMPS 2024 is fund limited, with restricted number of vehicles and a term-limited Scheme, i.e., the <keyword id="19977665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="subsidies" source="keywords">subsidies</keyword> for <keyword id="22519910" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demand-incentive" source="keywords">demand incentive</keyword> are eligible for e-2w and e-3w sold and registered until the funds are available or the number of vehicles supported reaches the maximum number defined category-wise (shown in para above) or until July 31, 2024, whichever comes first," the ministry stated.

These are expected to attract more investments for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Narendra Modi</a>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Make+in+India">Make in India</a> initiative. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Excise+duty">Excise duty</a> exemption has also been suggested on a range of electronic equipment. This is expected to help create a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manufacturing">manufacturing</a> ecosystem in the country. 
 
The 10 year tax holiday in the 15 years block is expected to attract fresh investments of over $1 billion over the next three years. 
 
"Such proposals would be exempt from MAT (minimum alternate tax) as well for the same time frame," a senior official said. 
 The <keyword id="6493697" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telecom-Ministry">telecom ministry</keyword> has also reportedly proposed that VoIP phones and gateways, besides laptops or notebooks priced under Rs 15,000, should be brought under the differential duty blanket. These include electronic equipment like network switches, routers and modems has also been proposed. Differential <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=excise+duty">excise duty</a> is currently levied on only mobile phones. 
 
Including lithium ion batteries and TV set-top boxes to the list of devices that connect to the Internet has also been proposed. 
 It’s important to note that after the government made mobile phone imports 11% more expensive, smartphone giants like Foxconn, Sony, Lava, Micromax and Intex took to domestic <keyword id="6362048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Manufacturing">manufacturing</keyword>. This has led to local production value rising 95% YoY to Rs 18,000 Crores and volumes soaring to 100 million units in 2015 according to the Indian Cellular Association 
 
The quantum of this production is set to double by March 2016. This will see employment in the sector going up by over 60%. Manufacturers' Association of Information Technology (MAIT) that represents prominent IT companies including Dell and Lenovo has demanded similar duties should be applied to this sector to incentivize local production. 
 
If these proposals are accepted, local production can begin in India. That will invite fresh investment. This will create the much needed local <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manufacturing">manufacturing</a> ecosystem.

With the rising levels of air pollution in the country, the electric vehicle segment is hoping that the Modi government will finally take steps to bolster the growth of this otherwise dormant auto segment in the upcoming Budget 2016. 
 “Pure <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">Electric Vehicles</keyword> need to be nurtured in a different way than Hybrid vehicles. At present the manufacturing base of the electric components and the batteries for the electric vehicles is almost non existent, neither do we have the public charging infrastructure to support such electric vehicles. Amongst other things, the following need to be done to trigger a growth in pure electric vehicles, particularly the electric two wheelers and small cars,” says Sohinder Gill, director, Corporate Affairs, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV). 
 
He adds, “In the previous union budget 2015-16, FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in India) policy was unveiled by the Central government. It has been a good step to create a fine eco-system for faster adoption of green vehicles in the country. In NEMMP, the largest potential of reduction in the pollution and the crude oil consumption was anticipated out of electric two wheelers and small cars, however their sale has not picked up.” 
 
Thus, looking at the current scenario and the possible return of the odd-even scheme in the city, BI India lists down their expectations from the Union Budget 2016. 
 
1. Govt should provide infrastructure support for setting up charging stations in at least top 50 cities where there is a significant population of EVs. Unless, a city is well populated with charging stations, people will be reluctant to migrate to electric vehicles. 
 
2. The industry also needs financial and technology support in the area of technology development and “make in India" specially related to next generation electronic, electric and battery technology. 
 
3. Another issue is related to availability of finances. Banks have been reluctant to provide loans for the purchase of electric two wheelers. The centre needs to direct public banks to offer loans at a zero-interest rate. 
 
4. Make a rule that only electric bikes would be permitted to be used as 2W taxi or for food/ E-com deliveries. Allow 100% depreciation on the battery swapping and charging stations put up by the e taxi/ e commerce companies and subsidy on 2nd lithium battery for such usage 
 
5. The Centre needs to maintain 6% Import duty on CKD and local components for next three years at least or better, till the time the domestic manufacturing eco-system is fully developed. 
 
6. Government and public sector offices should convert part of their fleet to electric and should heavily incentivise employees to convert to electric vehicles. 
 
7. We are positive that if these measures are taken, we will have a vibrant eco-system for electric vehicles in the country and we all know that green mobility is the need of hour.”

New Delhi, Jan 23 () L&amp;T Technology Services (LTTS) on Thursday said that it has joined a Qualcomm program to provide smart city solutions to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators.
 The community matchmaking program brings together smart solutions providers with municipalities or systems integrators looking to solve problems.
 "L&amp;T Technology Services has joined the Qualcomm Smart Cities Accelerator Program to collaborate on providing smart ecosystem solutions and services to help global enterprises accelerate the digital transformation to smart urban infrastructure," the company said in a filing to BSE.
 This can help drive additional value and integrate solutions with secure interoperability, edge processing and an ecosystem to deploy at scale, it said, adding that LTTS has expertise in smart ecosystems - smart cities, smart warehousing and smart manufacturing solutions.
 "Together with Qualcomm Technologies' global technology leadership in edge compute capability, cutting-edge processors and wide-area and local-area communications technologies, LTTS can offer a portfolio of digital offerings to address energy conservation, operational efficiency and digital transformation to cities, making them smarter and more sustainable," as per the filing.

Tesla's easy ride in China may be coming to an end 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some investors see India as the new China, but the South Asian economy still has to narrow a few gaps.</li><li>India is lagging behind China in national literacy, infrastructure investment, and a supply-chain ecosystem.</li></ul>India is shaping up to be the biggest growth story of the moment, as evidenced by <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-says-it-is-excited-be-manufacturing-iphone-14-india-2022-09-26/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tech giant Apple</a> and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/micron-confirms-up-825-mln-investment-india-chip-facility-2023-06-22/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chipmaker Micron</a>'s recent efforts to enter the market.The country's potential appears brighter after its population surpassed China's, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/india-economy-beat-us-gdp-by-2075-goldman-sachs-2023-7#:~:text=India's%20economy%20is%20on%20track%20to%20surpass%20the%20US%20by,China%20and%20the%20US%2C%20respectively" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prompting many observers to tout the South Asian country</a> as the next economy to watch. There's so much optimism about India that <a href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/intelligence/pages/how-india-could-rise-to-the-worlds-second-biggest-economy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Goldman Sachs</a> forecasts <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/india-economy-beat-us-gdp-by-2075-goldman-sachs-2023-7">India's economy will surpass the US</a> by 2075.But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-business-market-entry-barriers-tariffs-supply-chain-china-2023-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">India isn't an easy landscape</a> for foreign investors to navigate. This is "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-is-the-new-china-2016-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">not the first time people have said India is on the rise</a> and then watched it make a series of major political errors or have political problems at home that stalled that growth," Pramit Chaudhuri, the head of the South Asia practice at Eurasia Group, told the firm's <a href="https://www.gzeromedia.com/is-india-the-new-china-not-quite" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">GZERO Media outlet.</a>"It might happen, but it would require India to get a lot of things right," Chaudhuri added.Here are four ways India is still playing catch-up to its Asian rival, China.<h2>1. India lacks the supply chain ecosystem of China</h2>Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to attract foreign direct investments since he took office in 2014, India's manufacturing system still lags behind China."India lacks the manufacturing ecosystem that has been a key driver of China's phenomenal economic growth," analysts at Swiss bank UBS wrote in a <a href="https://www.ubs.com/us/en/wealth-management/insights/market-news/article.1591577.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">May 17 note titled "Is India the new China?"</a>Experts told Insider in December that while India is seen as an up-and-coming contender to China thanks to its burgeoning young population, it still doesn't quite have the set-up to be a manufacturing powerhouse.According to these experts, India doesn't have the interconnectivity of a large ecosystem like in China, where products are built from parts sourced directly in the country.Indian manufacturers often need to import parts from outside the country — thereby adding to the cost of the finished product, they said. <h2>2. India's infrastructure investments lag China's</h2>One reason India hasn't built up the extensive web of manufacturing facilities that China has managed to construct is that it hasn't been spending as much on infrastructure.For example, in pre-COVID 2019, China invested about 6.5% of its GDP in infrastructure development, while India invested just 4.5% — something the government is working on boosting, per UBS' May 17 note.However, the Indian government has committed to ramping up infrastructure spending, Modi's administration <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/india-202324-budget-raises-capex-spend-10-trillion-rupees-2023-02-01/">announced in February</a>. It raised capital investments by 33% in this fiscal year to 10 trillion Indian rupees, or $121 billion.<h2>3. India's social indices still lag behind China's</h2>Even though India's population surpassed China's, its social indices — such as literacy rates — still lag behind those of the East Asian nation, according to Eurasia Group's Chaudhuri.About 78% of Indians are literate — but the percentage drops to 62% for women, according to data released by the <a href="https://knowindia.india.gov.in/profile/literacy.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian government</a> in November 2019. On the other hand, as of 2020, about <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SE.ADT.LITR.ZS?locations=CN" target="_blank" rel="noopener">97% of Chinese nationals were literate</a>, per World Bank data. A lower literacy rate means that India doesn't quite have the big pool of skilled labor that China has — and this labor pool has been a major part of China's growth story. Furthermore, about 1.6 million Indians were enrolled in vocational education in 2021, <a href="https://pib.gov.in/Pressreleaseshare.aspx?PRID=1783494" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the country's government.</a> In China, about 5.6 million people enrolled in higher vocational colleges in the same year, state-owned outlet <a href="https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202205/25/WS628d8782a310fd2b29e5ecf2.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">China Daily reported,</a> citing the education ministry.<h2>4. Business processes can take longer in India due to decentralized decision-making</h2> As the world's largest democracy, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-india-supply-chain-covid-sanctions-manufacturers-relocating-tariffs-options-2022-12" rel="">decision-making can get complicated</a> in India. "As a federal system, power and decision-making are decentralized in India, with differences at the state level in political leadership, quality of governance, regulations, taxation, and labor relations," the US International Trade Administration <a href="https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/india-market-challenges">wrote in September</a>, in a post outlining market challenges in India.While China also has issues like compliance and licensing, it can still move more quickly than India, simply because the South Asian nation is "much more democratic and there are just too many stakeholders to satisfy," Ashutosh Sharma, a research director at market researcher Forrester, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-india-supply-chain-covid-sanctions-manufacturers-relocating-tariffs-options-2022-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Insider in December.</a>It took 18 days to start a business in India in 2019 — double the time it took in China, according to <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IC.REG.DURS" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Bank data.</a> The report this measure came from has since been discontinued.But India is still a bright spot in the current global economy, with tremendous growth potential, analysts say."All in, we think India's secular growth outlook is more promising than China's. Still, the economic development gap between the two countries will take a long time to meaningfully narrow, in our view," UBS analysts wrote.

New Delhi, Nov 29 () With an objective to push investment in northeastern region of the country, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is organising a day-long symposium in Guwahati on Saturday.
 The main objective of the symposium is to facilitate knowledge sharing between northeastern states on North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS), good practices in investment promotion and facilitation, reviewing the progress under sector-specific and cluster based development, ease of doing business and promotion of industrial system.
 Detailed presentations will be given to business community on start-up ecosystem and ease of doing business initiatives of the government, a DPIIT official said.
 The focus will be on improving investment ecosystem in the region with a special focus on NEIDS.
 The scheme, covering manufacturing and service sector, was approved on March 21, 2018. It is effective from April 2017 to March 2022.
 It gives encouragement to MSMEs in manufacturing, services. Information technology is leveraged to process and approve proposals and release payment.
 Manufacturing and service units of northeast can avail benefits up to Rs 200 crore per unit under all components of scheme, subject to investment in plant and machinery.
 The official said that northeast region's value chain potential with Bangladesh, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and rest of India in agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, processed food, engineering, automobiles, garments, and pharmaceuticals have remained unlocked.
 Department heads of northeastern states, national bodies like APEDA and NEC, representatives from industry associations would participate in the symposium. RR

Excise Duty Amendment 
Exemption of BCD and SAD for ATMP for semiconductor wafer fabrication / LCD fabrication is a very well planned move and will certainly give a boost to local manufacturing especially to SMEs. Similar exemption extended to parts and components, sub parts for manufacturing of charger, adaptors, mobile phones, routers, modems, set- top boxes etc., will significantly go a long way in encouraging local production. 
 
Imposition of BCD on finished products like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+equipment">telecom equipment</a> etc., is a very well thought out to enhance domestic manufacturing and reducing import dependence. Reduction of BCD on specific capital goods for manufacturing of various fuses is a boost to component manufacturing and enriching the supply chain. 
 
Make in India 
Imports of assembled sub-systems like charger/adapter, battery and wired headsets/speakers for manufacture of mobile phone will cost 16.5% more due to withdrawal of Basic Customs Duty and Special Additional Duty. 
 
On the other hand, inputs, parts and components, subparts for manufacturing these and other electronics sub-systems have been reduced to 0%. Further, imports of populated Printed Circuit Boards will cost 2-4% more. Both these reflect a strong commitment to promote local value additions in electronics.
