ICC appoints Geoff Allardice as permanent CEO

New Delhi, Jun 10 () The International Cricket Council on Wednesday decided to wait for another month before taking a call on the fate of this year's T20 World Cup, saying that it wants to continue exploring contingency plans amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is scheduled to be held in Australia in October-November. "We will only get one chance to make this decision and it needs to be the right one...we will continue to consult with our Members, broadcasters, partners, governments and players and to ensure that we make a well informed decision," ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement after the Board meeting held via video conference. The ICC Board, however, decided to put an end, at least till December this year, the tug of war over tax exemptions with the BCCI. It extended the deadline for the Indian Board to get the promised tax exemption from the country's central government which is mandatory to hold ICC tournaments like World T20 and ODI World Cup. This will allow cricket fans across the world to re-live some of the most iconic moments of cricket, including the 1983 World Cup in which India defeated West Indies to win its first world title. ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said, “We are facing unprecedented times as a sports industry and the need to connect with our fan communities is perhaps greater than ever. With no live cricket to unite our fans around the world we thought the next best thing would be to release our archive to broadcast partners so fans can enjoy some magnificent memories.” Broadcasters will decide what to show While complete footage of the last 45 years has been made available, cricket fans will not be able to decide what to watch. The broadcasters will select the matches to show once they rework their programming schedules in the coming weeks. The footage available to broadcasters includes matches starting form the 1975 World Cup and most knockout matches from subsequent editions. T20 fans who might be missing the IPL will get to watch the four editions of the Champions Trophy and five editions of T20 World Cup. A lot of Indian broadcasters have been showing reruns of shows. Indian state owned television channel Doordarshan too has started showing shows from the 80s like Ramayan and Mahabharata. By Kushan Sarkar New Delhi, May 24 () Tax exemption for future global cricket events in India has once again become a bone of contention between the BCCI and ICC as the former gears up to host the 2021 T20 World Cup and 50-over showpiece event in 2023. The ICC and BCCI have had a long standing feud on tax exemptions since the 2016 World T20 in India. An ICC spokesperson said that both parties are trying to reach an amicable solution. "The ICC and BCCI have been working in partnership to address the issue of tax exemptions for ICC events that is a requirement of the host agreement signed by all parties at the beginning of the cycle in 2015 and this work is ongoing," the spokesperson tod . "There are certain timelines within the agreements that we collectively work towards to ensure we can deliver successful world class events and continue to invest in the sport of cricket. "In addition to this the ICC Board agreed clear timelines for the resolution of the tax issues which we are guided by," the spokesperson added. While the outgoing ICC chairman Shashank Manohar and chief executive Manu Sawhney have been in constant touch with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, the BCCI top-brass didn't like the tone of mail sent by the parent body's legal head Jonathan Hall. Hall, in his mail, has written about the BCCI not adhering to timelines on committing to tax exemptions as per the agreement. "The tax structure is not decided by the BCCI but by the Indian government. It is our government that decides whether exemption will be possible or not. For the record, Formula One also wasn't given tax exemption," a senior BCCI official told . Prior to 2016 World T20, the BCCI got tax exemptions for global events, as stated in an earlier documentation of the erstwhile Committee of Administrators (COA). Normally, the ICC seeks exemption on excise duties for importing TV production equipment and ticketing. But in this case, Star Sports, which also has the BCCI's home match rights, has a set up in India. This had been the bone of contention during 2016 Word T20 also and that matter is up for hearing in the ICC tribunal. "We understand that as the nomination process of new ICC chairman starts on Tuesday, suddenly there has been a flurry of communication. You can be rest assured that T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2023 ODI World Cup is going nowhere. "As far as timeline is concerned, we had told ICC that unless lockdown is lifted, we can't have discussions with government officials," the influential member said. Even an ICC Board member said that discussions should be on to find a plausible solution as the first deadline for tax exemption was December, 2019. The tax issue finds mention in a COA document of July 6, 2019, when the BCCI legal team was asked to get in touch with a British law firm as legal cases pertaining to ICC falls under the UK law. India have two more matches against qualifiers on March 12 and March 22 at Seddon park, Hamilton in the eight-team round-robin format event. Among the marquee games, Tauranga will host the rematch of the 2017 Women's World Cup final at Lord's with India taking on England on March 16. India will then face Australia at Eden Park, Auckland on March 19, before locking horns with South Africa on March 27 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The event, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic from its original window in February-March 2021 with the same six host cities and venues retained, will be held between March 4 and April 3, 2022. The first global women's <keyword id="1521" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> event to be played since the T20 World Cup in Australia in March, it will feature eight of the world's best nations going head-to-head across Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. "We have all been through a very difficult year and are happy to be getting back at playing the game we all love," India captain Mithali Raj said in an ICC release. "India has been doing very well at ICC tournaments in the past three or four years, whether you talk about the (ODI) World Cup or the recently concluded T20 World Cup. "... if we manage to win the tournament in 2022, it will be a massive inspiration for the next generation of girls, as the fifty-over format, is considered the pinnacle for any cricketer. I can assure you the team and I are looking forward to it." According to the schedule, the Basin Reserve in Wellington and the Hagley Oval in Christchurch will host the semi-finals with the latter also set to to host the final under lights on April 3, 2022. The tournament-opener will be held in Tauranga featuring the White Ferns and a qualifier on March 4. Besides India, New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa have qualified for the World Cup. The three remaining teams will emerge from the ICC qualifying tournament which will be held from June 26 to July 10 in Sri Lanka next year. It will be the first of two major cricket tournaments across the globe in 2022 - the other being the Commonwealth Games in England. "This schedule takes the world's best cricketers across New Zealand and can help inspire a generation of girls and boys to take up the game," ICC CEO, Manu Sawhney said. The prize money for the showpiece will total NZD 5.5 million, an increase of almost 60 percent on 2017 and more than 1000 percent compared to 2013. All matches will be broadcast live to a huge global audience. "The last five years have seen significant progress in women's Cricket and recent success of the Women's T20 challenge is an indicator of the same," Sanjog Gupta, Head of Star India which will broadcast the event, said. "The broadcast of the ICC Women's World Cup has grown leaps and bounds. The 2017 ICC Women's World Cup Final, one of the highest-rated sporting events of that year with a cumulative reach of 95 million, is testament to the growing fandoms for women's cricket in India," he added.
