It is a big success of the programme that it has been kept away even from the shadow of the government during its 110 episodes, he said, asserting that the broadcast has been dedicated to the country's collective strength and achievements. "It is a programme of the people, for the people and by the people," the prime minister said. "When we meet the next time, it will be 111th episode of the Mann Ki Baat," Modi added, noting the auspiciousness associated with the number. What can be better than this, he said. The case was quietly unsealed in May after the New York Attorney General declined to devote its resources to the case.Ed Adler, a spokesman for Horace Mann, said the claims are bogus and protested that the school was collateral damage in a dispute between others."The matter doesn't involve Horace Mann, and there has never been a quid pro quo for gifts at the school," he said.The case is at an early stage and could eventually be dismissed. But if Hayward proves that Chen, his companies or Horace Mann cheated on their taxes, he would stand to collect a share of any back taxes paid to the state.<h3>Wine, music lessons, and payments to a "sexual paramour" were allegedly written off</h3>According to the lawsuit, Lake 5 Media reported to the IRS that it paid $550,000 in 2018 to an entity called CTBS Everblue LLC, mostly for "rent." In reality, Hayward claims, Chen used the Everblue entity to purchase more than $22,000 of wine for his own personal consumption and to pay for music and martial-arts lessons for his kids, among other things."Over the past 10 years, Mr. Chen has spent massive amounts of Lake 5's and Everblue's money on foreign vacations; improvements to his residence; wine; automobiles; support for his sexual paramour; and even a surrogacy contract," the lawsuit claims.As for Horace Mann, the suit claims, payments received for admissions slots should have been reported to the IRS as "unrelated business income," which is taxable.Eric Rosen, a former federal prosecutor who worked on the "Varsity Blues" pay-to-play cases, said the case against Horace Mann could turn on how explicit the supposed deal between Chen and the school was. Simply hoping that a donation will curry favor isn't illegal, he said."It's all gonna come down to whether they can get discovery to show there was some agreement between the parent and the headmaster," said Rosen, now with the law firm Freedman Normand Friedland.Steve Mintz, a lawyer for Chen, declined to comment.Hayward was confused, then concerned, when Insider contacted him after the lawsuit's existence was made public in May. Furthermore, methane can be transported similarly to diesel using the cryogenic storage tank. Bennamann’s patented non-venting cryogenic storage tank. AAP names Bhagwant Mann as Punjab CM candidate

Now, after the New York Times investigation, the first question to be answered is whether Modi's ministers lied to the Parliament. And, the government’s silence on the New York Times charge that it bought Pegasus spyware is eerie. The Prime Minister gave his frequent radio address, called the Mann ki Baat, on January 30, but there was no mention of the Pegasus issue. The opposition is likely to launch a high decibel protest, demanding a response from the Modi government in the Parliament when it opens for <a href="https://businessinsider.in/budget">the Budget session this week</a>. A minister of the Modi government, Ashwini Vaishnaw, had denied the snooping charge in Parliament saying India was not one of the buyers of the Pegasus spyware. The Ministry of Defence backed it up saying it didn’t do any transaction with the NSO Group that sells Pegasus. The government lawyer maintained a similar stance at the Supreme Court of India as well, but the court did not find it convincing. These were some of the court’s observations after the government’s response to the charge that it used national security as an excuse to illegally monitor its detractors: <ul><li>There has been no specific denial by the Centre. Thus, we have no option but to accept the submissions of the petitioner and appoint an expert committee whose function will be overseen by the Supreme Court.</li><li>There is no clear stand from the government. There is a serious concern of foreign agency involvement by surveilling Indians.</li><li>The Solicitor General had suggested that many such reports are motivated. However, such omnibus oral submissions cannot be accepted.</li></ul> Given the Modi administration’s response in the preceding months, the implication of the latest New York Times report is that the Modi administration lied both to the Parliament and the Supreme Court. It’s a charge similar to the Watergate scandal in the United States that toppled the Richard Nixon administration in the early 1970s. The report also connected this purchase with India supporting Israel at a United Nations (UN) forum ⁠— <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/politics/israel-palestine-conflict-here-is-how-india-has-voted-in-un-over-the-years-6956341.html">a shift from its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause</a> ⁠— to deny a Palestinian human rights organisation an ‘observer status’. More than a day has passed since the latest report and there is very little in terms of response from the government or the Prime Minister. So far, there is a tweet from a junior minister for civil aviation and road transport and highways, General VK Singh, who has called the New York Times ‘supari media’. Taking a Supari ⁠— the Hindi word for betel nut ⁠— is a colloquially used to describe a hit job. Syed Akbaruuddin, India’s former permanent representative to the UN, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/utter-rubbish-ex-diplomat-syed-akbaruddin-on-nyt-pegasus-report-citing-indias-un-vote-2736819">has ‘rubbished’ the link</a> with India’s stance in support of Israel against Palestinians. Other than these, there isn’t another official word on the matter so far. Considering the seriousness of the charge, it would be fair to expect that the Prime Minister would have defended the government in his Mann ki baat address to the voters today. But he didn't. <div type="Youtube" id="WdprihSHmmQ" title="PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat with the Nation, January 2022" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WdprihSHmmQ/mqdefault.jpg"></div> There are two ways to look at it. Either team Modi doesn’t take the charge of ‘lying to Parliament’ seriously. It’s not a good show on an elected government in a democracy that it doesn’t take offence to being called a liar, especially in the Parliament. Or, it doesn’t have enough material to defend itself. An expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court, led by a former judge RV Raveendran, is already <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/supreme-court-of-india-verdict-on-pegasus-spying-case-appoints-a-retired-judge-committee-for-probe/articleshow/87299281.cms">looking into the snooping charges</a>. If the three-member panel arrives at a conclusion that there was illegal supervision, it could automatically imply that the tool i.e. Pegasus was purchased by the government. A clean chit from the Justice Raveendran panel would be a good thing for Modi and his government but it isn’t here, at least not yet. Meanwhile, ignoring the charge of lying, or wishing it away, is not an option. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the season one finale of Paramount+ drama, "1923."</li><li>Darren Mann spoke to Insider about his character's subtle transformation throughout season one.</li></ul>The first season of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/yellowstone-kevin-costner-lawyer-slams-absolute-lie-over-conflict-2023-2">Yellowstone</a>" prequel "<a href="https://www.insider.com/1923-episode-8-details-easter-eggs-you-missed-2023-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1923</a>" came to a close this weekend and didn't disappoint viewers, leaving them with plenty to ponder over until season two.One character whose actions in the finale audiences will no doubt be playing in fans' minds for some time is the youngest Dutton, Jack (Darren Mann), who in the show's eleventh hour displayed a huge amount of growth that Mann told Insider he thinks could hint at what's to come in future seasons.At the beginning of the episode, Jack accompanied his great-uncle Jacob (Harrison Ford) and the ranch's foreman, Zane (Brian Geraghty), to the courthouse to see Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) arraigned. Much to the surprise of everyone, including himself, the murderous Scot was released without bail thanks to his smarmy lawyer Chadwick Benton (Currie Graham).As he makes his way out, however, Banner cannot help but mouth off. First, he took aim at Jacob, before riling Jack up with a comment about the near-fatal gunshot wound his men inflicted on his bride Elizabeth (more on that later) during the bloody ambush that also claimed the life of his father, John (James Badge Dale), and, as a result, drove his mother Emma (Marley Shelton) to suicide."Sitting back is driving him nuts a little bit, he's itching to get back at Banner," Mann told Insider while discussing the season finale. "Especially when he makes a remark like that about Elizabeth and what we've been through.""Jack is just waiting to get his sweet revenge. He's been wanting to go back after him for a long time, but he's not in charge at this time, right? So he's gotta listen to Jacob, but I think the whole time Jack has been vying to go back and get revenge." <div type="image" title="Helen Mirren as Cara, Harrison Ford as Jacob and Darren Mann as Jack of the Paramount+ series &quot;1923.&quot;" height="4000" width="6000" msid="98284063" hostid="261"></div>Asked what he thinks that might look like, Mann said: "Well, I'm gonna give you the version in my head: I would love to see Jack take over, I'd love to see Jack be the man, and I'd like to see things turn out good for the Yellowstone.""In my mind, that's the way it would go," he added with a laugh. "I'm not sure when it will come, but it's going to be sweet when it does.""But I have no idea what's gonna happen. I haven't been told anything. I haven't talked to Taylor for quite a while either," Mann added. "I haven't seen him since the premiere of the first episode in December, so I truly have no clue what's going to happen. I'm just excited as you are to read the first episode of next season."Later in the episode, Mann delivers a showstopper of a speech when Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) tells him she feels like a failure after she has miscarried their baby. It's not explicitly stated but it's suggested that the abdominal gunshot from earlier on in the season has affected her ability to carry children.Faced with his wife's anxieties that she has no purpose without motherhood, Jack reminds her that Cara (Helen Mirren) never had children either and that Elizabeth's destiny may be something altogether different.It's a tender moment and presents viewers with a more sensitive and mature side to Jack that's not really been shown until now.However, Mann says that if you've been watching closely enough, Jack's astuteness in this scene shouldn't come as a surprise."I don't know if this side of him was necessarily held back, but it really shows all that he's gone through," he said. "I think the cool thing about Jack is that we really get to go through him becoming who he is in season one."<div type="image" title="Darren Mann as Jack and Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth of the Paramount+ series &quot;1923.&quot;" height="2000" width="2666" msid="98284067" hostid="261"></div>While most of the characters were introduced in the premiere with some emotional baggage in one form or another, this wasn't the case for Jack, whose biggest concern before the range war was whether he could move his wedding day to fit in with his cowboying schedule."A lot of these other characters, they've gone through the craziest things in their life already that have set them down the path that they're on and made them become the person they are," Mann said."But we get to live with Jack through the biggest moments of his life: his mom passing, his dad passing, and now losing a child," the actor said. "All of the stuff that's going on around him, that's influencing him and who he's becoming, and I think that all leads up and builds into who he is in the finale."Mann suggested that "maybe Jack and Elizabeth are going to become like the new Jacob and Cara," following the latest devastating development for the young couple."He and Elizabeth, they love the Yellowstone more than anybody," he said. "He loves being a cowboy, he loves taking care of his family and you know, he doesn't want to let that go and he'll do anything he can to protect that," he said."1923" is now streaming on Paramount+.
