The Punjab Police on Saturday succeeded in its operation of "cage the queen bee" with the arrest of the mastermind of last week's heist of Rs 8.49 crore, <keyword id="231843" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mandeep-kaur" source="Orion">Mandeep Kaur</keyword>, a.k.a. Mona, who has been named '<keyword id="17756864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bandit-hasina" source="Orion">Bandit Hasina</keyword>', from the office of CMS Info Systems Ltd, a cash management firm, based in Ludhiana, along with her spouse <keyword id="166229" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jaswinder-singh" source="Orion">Jaswinder Singh</keyword> while returning from a famous Sikh shrine in Uttarakhand. Commissioner of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu confirmed the arrest of the couple. The police also arrested one of their accomplices. Earlier, the police arrested six accused -- <keyword id="17707747" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="manjinder-singh-mani" source="Orion">Manjinder Singh Mani</keyword>, Mandeep Singh, Harvinder Singh, Paramjit Singh, Harpreet Singh and Narinder Singh -- and recovered Rs 5 crore from them. The police recovered Rs 12 lakh on information about Kaur that was concealed in the under-seat of her mother's scooter. Responding to the arrest of the couple, Commissioner of Police Sidhu said all the accused had wished that they would pay obeisance at Kedarnath, Haridwar and Hemkund Sahib after a 'successful robbery'. Kaur and her husband were arrested by a team of Punjab Police while they were returning from Hemkund Sahib. "When the couple came to know that their accomplices have been arrested, they begged pardon at Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib for the crime," Sidhu said. They got married in February. The gang of alleged robbers was led by Mandeep Kaur, whose husband and cousin were also blamed for the heist. She in connivance with her friend and CMS employee Manjinder Singh Mani, had planned the robbery. They along with their eight accomplices looted Rs 8.49 crore from the office of the CMS firm, in the early hours of June 10. Sidhu blamed the company for negligence in the safety of the cash. He said Rs 50 lakh was recovered from the house of Mani in Abuwal village. He had hidden the cash in a septic tank after wrapping the bundles in a polythene bag. On Friday, the police launched the operation "Let's Cage the Queen Bee" to arrest the main mastermind Mandeep Kaur and her husband.

India ended the Day 4 of competitions at 27th spot in the rankings with seven medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze). Preethi created history as she became the first Indian woman track and field athlete to win two medals at the Paralympics while Nishad Kumar clinched his second successive silver at the showpiece in the men's high jump T47 category. The 23-year-old Preethi, a farmer's daughter from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, bagged a bronze in the 200m T35 category with a personal best time of 30.01 seconds. She also won a bronze in the 100m T35 category on Friday. She faced significant physical challenges when she was born as her lower body was plastered for six days after birth. Weak legs and an irregular leg posture made her prone to various diseases. Preethi also became only the second Indian woman to win two medals -- both bronze -- in a single Paralympics after shooter Avani Lekhara who won a gold and a bronze in Tokyo three years ago. T35 classification is meant for athletes who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis. Later in the day, the 24-year-old Nishad, who hails from Una in Himachal Pradesh, won India's third medal from para-athletics and seventh overall for the country in Paris Paralympics with a season's best effort of 2.04m. He lost his right hand in a grass-cutting machine when he was six-year-old. Nishad, who had also won a silver in Tokyo Paralympics three years ago with a jump of 2.06m, had a tough fight with world record holder and defending champion Townsend Roderick of the USA, who clinched the gold after clearing 2.12m. STRONG SHOW BY <keyword id="20202465" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shuttlers" source="keywords">SHUTTLERS</keyword> Tokyo Games silver medallist Suhas is set to become the first Indian shuttler to win back-to-back medals at the Paralympics after outplaying compatriot Sukant Kadam in straight games to reach the men's singles SL4 final. The 41-year-old Suhas, a 2007 batch IAS officer, beat Sukant 21-17, 21-12 to make another final at the global showpiece. Later, Nitesh Kumar also guaranteed a medal for himself in SL3 with a 21-16 21-12 victory over Japan's Daisuke Fujihara in the semifinal. Before Suhas sizzled, it was Manisha who set up an all-Indian women's singles SU5 semifinal with compatriot Thulasimathi Murugesan, assuring the country of at least a silver. The 19-year-old Manisha, who was born with Erb's palsy which affected her right arm, had no trouble in dispatching Japan's Mamiko Toyoda 21-13 21-16 in the quarterfinals. The second seeded Indian left-hander needed 30 minutes to down her unseeded rival. Erb's palsy is a nerve disorder in the shoulder and arm that results in weakness or loss of muscle function. In the last four, Manisha will meet top seed Thulasimathi, who had defeated Portugal's Beatriz Monteiro in group A on Saturday. In the SU5 category, the players have impairment of the upper limbs. The impairment could be on the playing or non-playing hand. However, Mandeep Kaur and Palak Kohli were eliminated in the quarterfinals. NO SUCCESS IN SHOOTING RANGE After the high of four medals in two days, there was disappointment in store for India in the shooting range with Lekhara failing to qualify for the final following a 11th-place finish in the mixed 10m air rifle prone (SH1) qualification in which Sidhartha Babu ended 28th. In the mixed 10m air rifle prone (SH2) qualification, Sriharsha Devaraddi Ramakrishna ended in 26th place with a total of 630.2. In the Paralympics mixed event, both men and women compete on the line against each other. Coming off her historic gold medal in the 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, Lekhara ended the competition with a total of 632.8. Lekhara's sequence of scores read 105.7, 106.0, 104.1, 106.0, 104.8, 106.2, while Sidhartha had scores of 104.6, 103.8, 105.7, 104.9, 103.6, 105.7. In SH1, athletes are able to hold their gun without difficulty and shoot from a standing or sitting position (in a wheelchair or chair). Sidhartha aggregated 628.3 across six series. Athletes classified in SH2 category are unable to hold their rifle independently, so they use a stand, but can aim by themselves and control the weapon when they shoot. Certain athletes may have an assistant to reload their gun. Only the top eight from qualification progress to the final. RAKESH SHINES World No 1 archer Rakesh Kumar overcame a blip to defeat Ken Swagumilang of Indonesia in the shoot-off and enter his successive Paralympics quarterfinals in the compound men open category. Rakesh held his slender one-point lead and needed a 9-point to seal the issue in five ends. But he slipped with an 8-pointer red-ring, leaving both the archers locked at 144-144 after regulation five ends comprising 15 arrows. New Delhi, Jan 30 () Scientists have developed an efficient, economical, and environment-friendly technology that uses sunlight to degrade toxic liquid waste, an advance they say could significantly reduce the waste-management costs of industries.
 The technology, developed by the researchers from Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab involves photocatalytic degradation -- a chemical reaction that involves the absorption of light -- using nanoparticles as catalysts.
 The technique is extremely efficient for the degradation of toxic organic chemicals produced by companies across sectors like pharmaceuticals, textiles, pesticides, paper, paints, and other chemical industries, according to the study published in the Asian Journal of Chemistry.
 Liquid waste management is a major challenge for many industries globally, especially those in the manufacturing space, owing to the extensive use of chemicals, the researchers said.
 These industries produce several kinds of liquid wastes which can cause serious environmental damage, like water and soil pollution, ground water contamination, and landfill contamination, if not treated properly, they said.
 The researchers, which included Mandeep Kaur, an M.Sc. student at LPU, and Assistant Professor Chandan Adhikari, noted that a huge amount of liquid waste is produced in India due to the presence of a large number of industries.
 They noted that the country's Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has set standards and guidelines regarding disposal of liquid waste.
 However, because of the high cost, most of the industries do not follow the proper waste management techniques to prevent the pollution caused by hazardous waste, they said.
 Currently, the industry spends about INR 120 to degrade one litre of liquid waste, according to the researchers.
 Apart from the cost, they noted the conventional way to degrade these chemicals has several disadvantages, for example, huge amount of energy requirement, and inefficiency.
 The new method developed by the researchers uses sunlight and Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl), a new photocatalyst to purify the toxic chemicals.
 "This technology uses only sunlight to destroy the dyes by degrading them," Adhikari told .
 "As soon as the sunlight strikes the surface of the nanoparticles, it generates highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) which destroy the organic dyes," he said.
 ROS are chemically reactive chemical species containing oxygen, such as peroxides, and superoxides.
 To understand the potential of Bismuth oxychloride, the researchers conducted several studies and chose methylene blue as the model dye due to its resemblance with a number of waste chemicals produced by the industries.
 The study shows that 100 per cent of dye degradation can be achieved up to 20 parts per million (ppm) of dye concentration in presence of sunlight over a period four hours.
 This catalyst can also be reused for 4-5 cycles with efficiency retention of more than 80 per cent, the researchers noted.
 The new technique can reduce the cost of liquid waste management by almost 30-40 per cent, leading to significant savings for companies, they said.
 The researchers noted that solid wastes are generally recycled in several steps or burned to produce energy through a process known as incineration.
 However, when it comes to liquid waste, it is more difficult to dispose or destroy them because most of the time liquid wastes come with a mixture of several chemicals.
 These chemicals are majorly soluble in water, which causes water pollution both in surface as well as groundwater.
 "With this new method developed by our student, treating such waste will not only become easier but up to 40 per cent cheaper," Adhikari said.
 The researchers noted that after the treatment, it is sometimes a little difficult to separate the photocatalyst from the mixture.
 To solve this problem, they are working to develop a "magnetic photocatalyst" which will be easily separated by the application of magnetic field externally. SAR

(Eds: Changes headline) New Delhi, Jun 4 () A woman has alleged that her COVID-19-positive father was not admitted in time by a Delhi government hospital and he died on Thursday, a charge denied by the authorities of the facility. The woman, Amarpreet Kaur, took to Twitter earlier in the day, saying, "My dad is having high fever. We need to shift him to hospital. I am standing outside LNJP Delhi &amp; they are not taking him in. He is having corona, high fever and breathing problem. He won't survive without help. Pls help." An hour later, she again tweeted, saying, "He is no more. The govt failed us." Her tweets were widely circulated by netizens. Amarpreet is a social activist, her family said. The authorities at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, a dedicated COVID-19 facility, denied the charge, saying the patient was "brought dead". According to information shared by the hospital, the 68-year-old man, who also had asthma, died at 7:37 am. "According to a report from the emergency department, the man was tested for COVID-19 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) and the report came on June 1, in which he was found positive for coronavirus infection," a senior official said. He was sent to home quarantine from there, the authorities said. On Thursday, he was brought to the casualty department of the hospital in an "unconscious state" and with a flat ECG line, and declared "brought dead". Amarpreet lives in Gurgaon with her husband Mandeep Singh, who said the family members rushed to the hospital after getting to know about his father-in-law's condition. "My father-in-law was taken in a car by my wife's brother and a cousin, accompanied by my mother-in-law," Singh said, and alleged that the LNJP Hospital staff "were not willing to see my father-in-law, even as he fainted in the car". "They are saying he was brought dead, but was he even attended to? The staff kept saying go to Ganga Ram Hospital. We were just at a loss," he alleged, the charge again denied by the LNJP Hospital authorities. Singh also alleged that the family "never received any call" from the SGRH on the positive COVID-19 status of his father-in-law. A spokesperson of the SGRH denied the charge, saying, "There is no truth in these allegations. However, we sympathise with the family for their loss." Singh also claimed that the family had approached three-four other private and government hospitals a few days ago, but "could not get admission" for the deceased in any of those facilities, adding that they found out that beds were available at the LNJP Hospital, so he was taken there. Later, in a statement, the LNJP Hospital rejected the claims of the family as "incorrect and false", saying the old man was brought to the hospital between 7:10 am and 7:30 am, was "not refused admission and examined by a doctor". It also claimed that the first tweet was put up by Amarpreet at 8:05 am and subsequently, she sent out another tweet, saying her father died at 9:08 am, but he died at 7:37 am. Singh responded to it and claimed that the tweets were "put out from his wife's account by a friend of hers", as she was scrambling to get her father medical attention and hence, there could have been a delay. Asked if the man's family was made to wait at the hospital, a source said, the LNJP Hospital, being a dedicated facility, sees a "lot of rush" of patients. "Also, there are four doctors in the casualty department, who can attend to only four patients at a time following all social-distancing and other safety guidelines. But the triage team looks out for any person in the queue, who needs immediate medical attention," the source said. The woman later tweeted seeking COVID-19 tests for all family members. "I lost my father today morning to COVID we want other family members to get tested today only. which labs are not doing they are in danger. We are trying since morning. My mother, brother, his wife and two kids. Pls help (sic)," she said. On June 2, the woman had also tweeted: "My father is corona positive and in Delhi, no helpline is responding @ArvindKejriwal @msisodia @dilipkpandey. Immediate support is needed." "I am extremely thankful to @dilipkpandey and others for immediate attention and support. We are proceeding on next steps as advised by doctors!" she had tweeted. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Pandey had helped to get a doctor on a telephone call with the family, Singh said. Delhi recorded 1,359 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday, which took the COVID-19 tally in the city past the 25,000-mark, and the death toll due to the disease mounted to 650, authorities said.
