<ul class="summary-list"><li>United Airlines is hiring over 7,000 aircraft maintenance technicians amid a looming mechanic shortage.</li><li>Consulting firm Oliver Wyman estimates the industry will need between 43,000 and 47,000 new technicians by 2027.</li></ul>United Airlines is taking a proactive approach to the looming aircraft mechanic shortage.On May 3, Kate Gebo, United's EVP of human resources and labor relations, told media the company is planning to hire over 7,000 aviation maintenance technicians "over the next couple of years" in preparation for a potential lull in available workers."Let me be honest, in this highly competitive job market, our biggest challenge has been hiring for this core function," she said, noting the roles do not require a college degree.Since January, United has hired 850 technicians — which is more than half of what the company hired in 2022.To create an even larger pool, the carrier has launched a 36-month <a href="https://careers.united.com/us/en/calibrate">internal maintenance program called Calibrate</a>. Currently, the apprenticeship is only available to current employees but will soon be open to the public, Gebo told media.While United is on an aggressive hiring campaign, Gebo said the move is not to address a current shortage of qualified mechanics — but rather to prevent one from happening."Our workforce is very senior, and about 40 to 50% of our technicians are retirement eligible," she told media. "Having said that, because there is not a mandatory retirement age, a lot of them are staying with us and they enjoy the growth that we're experiencing. "<a href="https://www.boeing.com/commercial/market/pilot-technician-outlook/">According to Boeing's Pilot and Technician Outlook</a> published in July 2022, the planemaker expects the industry will need 610,000 technicians by 2041. This is 8,000 more than the estimated 602,000 pilots needed.<a href="https://www.oliverwyman.com/content/dam/oliver-wyman/v2/publications/2023/jan/Not%20Enough%20Aviation%20Mechanics%20-%20AMT%20report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A recent report from consulting firm Oliver Wyman</a> projects the shortage will start occurring this year.Specifically, the study estimates the aviation industry will have a shortage of 12,000 to 18,0000 technicians in 2023, blaming retiring Baby Boomers and a low supply of Generation Z workers.This could increase to over 47,000 workers — a 27% deficit — by 2027, though the firm says its most realistic estimate is about 43,000.The lack of mechanics is expected to have effects similar to the pilot shortage, which has caused thousands of flight cancelations and forced airlines like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-grounding-100-regional-jets-due-to-the-pilot-shortage-2022-6">American and United to ground regional aircraft.</a>"The imbalance of supply and demand will persist and even worsen over the next 10 years," the firm said, emphasizing airline profitability could be at risk.However, Jonas Murby, a principal at AeroDynamic Advisory, says the industry is already in the thick of it."We started seeing it right before COVID, but then we didn't see it because there was such a low level of activity during the pandemic," he explained. "But COVID exacerbated everything because workers retired, and some of the young people got furloughed and then got a job elsewhere."Murby further said the lack of workers is likely to impact operations. But, he explained regional airlines will feel the impact more quickly as many mechanics see smaller carriers as a gateway to mainline ones like United.A similar problem has been exhausting the regional pilot supply, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-regional-pilots-getting-massive-pay-raise-envoy-piedmont-2022-6">one way airlines have attracted more talent is by increasing wages.</a>Murby says the same may need to happen for mechanics — but it won't be easy."The problem is now that cost structure is up due to the pilot salaries," he explained. "Do the airlines really have the ability to raise the salaries for the technicians?"In addition to raising pay, Murby said companies could follow China's lead and automate as much as possible."I recently spoke with aircraft maintenance company Gameco in Guangzhou and they said they automated the entire paint stripping line just because of the mechanic shortage," he told Insider. "I think this type of automation can really help increase the productivity of the existing people."

The aircraft in that incident, one of the last ones still flying, was set for retirement within a few years.The proximate cause of the accident, however, was a corroded propeller blade that went unfixed when it entered an Air Force maintenance depot in 2011, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiery-military-plane-crash-that-killed-16-caused-by-maintenance-failures-2018-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an investigation</a> released this month. The corrosion became a crack that allowed the blade to shear off in flight and rip through the fuselage, causing the plane to break up.Data compiled <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2017/09/marine-aviation-deaths-are-six-times-navys/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by Breaking Defense</a> in September 2017 - after a summer in which deadly accidents led Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller to order rolling stand-downs across aviation units - showed that over the previous six years, 62 Marines had been killed in aircraft accidents, compared to just 10 personnel from the Navy, which has more people and more aircraft.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The Corps also had more Class A Mishaps, the most serious category of accident which involve loss of life or more than $1 million in damage.The Marine Corps has fewer aircraft than the Navy, so a few accidents can boost the accident rate considerably. Marine Corps aircraft are also frequently carrying troops, which can make fewer accidents more deadly.The age and nature of Marine Corps aircraft also complicate matters. The F/A-18 Hornet and the KC-130T both entered service around the same time. The greatest increase came among Class C mishaps, where damage is between $50,000 and $500,000 and work days are lost due to injury.2013 marked the beginning of mandatory budget cuts known as sequestration, and other services also saw an increase in mishaps starting that year as squadrons reduced flying hours for training.The Marines, however, have a smaller budget, fewer personnel, and fewer aircraft. After 2013, flying hours were reduced and and experienced maintainers supervisors were released.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The next year, military operations increased as a part of the campaign against ISIS and in response to Chinese activity in the South China Sea. Flying hours for deployed pilots grew while returned pilots were "<a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/04/08/marine-corps-aviation-mishaps-on-the-rise-up-80-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flight-time deprived</a>."Along with increased flight hours for deployed Marine pilots, maintenance suffered, as the Corps was not able to replace some of its more experienced maintainers and crew members. That drove an increase in the number of aircraft that were unable to fly, in turn depriving pilots of flight time for training.The loss of both skilled maintainers and pilot hours increases the chances a mishap will occur and the chances that a minor mishap will escalate, defense analysts <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/04/08/marine-corps-aviation-mishaps-on-the-rise-up-80-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Military Times</a>."You got worse at everything if you flew two or less times a week," John Venable, a former F-16 pilot and senior defense fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told Military Times this spring. "And the average units have been flying two or less times for five years. It lulls your ability to handle even mundane things."

Deadly crash between 2 US Marine Corps aircraft is raising concerns about the service's shockingly high fatality rates

As of Saturday afternoon, the company had canceled 185 flights, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.flightaware.com/live/cancelled/today">FlightAware</a>."While this action is being taken out of an abundance of caution, the impact to our network is expected to last several days as we complete the inspections and work to return to normal operations," Spirit Airlines said in a statement. "We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to take care of affected guests."A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines did not elaborate on the reason for the inspections when asked by Insider. The Federal Aviation Administration said the inspections fall under "mandatory maintenance," the agency told CNN.This is not the first time in recent months Spirit Airlines customers have seen major disruptions.In August, the company announced an expected revenue drop as engine problems grounded several jets, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/03/spirit-airlines-warns-of-revenue-hit-as-engine-problem-grounds-more-jets.html">CNBC</a> reported. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The FAA proposed a $1.1 million fine against United Airlines on Monday.</li><li>The regulator alleged that United missed a required safety check for nearly three years.</li></ul>The Federal Aviation Administration hit United Airlines with a proposed fine of more than $1.1 million on allegations that the company failed to conduct certain mandatory safety checks on its Boeing 777 aircraft for nearly three years.In a Monday <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-proposes-11m-fine-against-united-airlines-allegedly-not-performing-maintenance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a>, the FAA proposed a $1,149,306 civil penalty against the airline for allegedly shirking required inspections of its Boeing 777s' fire-detection system from June 2018 to April 2021, rendering the aircrafts to be in "not airworthy condition" for more than 100,000 flights.The FAA said United removed its fire system warning check from the Boeing 777 preflight check-list in 2018, an inspection task deemed mandatory in the aircraft's maintenance specifications manual.The removal of the fire system check from United's pre-flight routine resulted in the airline failing to perform mandatory safety inspections, the air-safety regulator said.In a statement to Insider, a United spokesperson said safety is the highest priority to the airline.United acknowledged changing its pre-flight checklist in 2018, saying it did so to account for "redundant, built-in checks" that are automatically performed by the aircraft."The safety of our flights was never in question," the spokesperson said.A United representative said the FAA reviewed and approved its updated checklist at the time of the change. On April 19, 2021, an FAA aviation safety inspector discovered that United's fire-warning system check wasn't being performed, the regulator said in a Monday letter to United's chief executive, which was obtained by <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/faa-seeks-to-fine-united-airlines-1-1-million-for-allegedly-missing-safety-checks-11675709944?mod=hp_lead_pos3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">media</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2023/02/06/united-airlines-faa-fine/">outlets</a>. United said it "immediately updated its procedures" after being notified of the problem. At nearly 3 million square feet, it's the biggest aircraft repair shop in North America. Here, mechanics, technicians, and engineers fix nearly 1,000 planes a year, with all kinds of issues, from a loose screw to an engine failure. But it takes a lot more than elbow grease to get a plane back in the air. This is a bustling, and expensive, 24-hour operation.Cedric Morris: The work never stops because the planes never stop.Narrator: That's Cedric. Back in February, before <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> was declared a pandemic, he took us behind the scenes of Delta's massive <keyword id="6420597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airplane">airplane</keyword> hospital.Morris: Let me put my bump cap on. I look like somebody.Narrator: Delta TechOps is a maintenance, repair, and overhaul, or MRO, business.Morris: We do everything that you see on that aircraft. We have component maintenance, engine maintenance, and aircraft maintenance.Narrator: 6,000 technicians can fix every inch of pretty much any commercial jet on the planet, from 150 other airlines, government organizations, and even military branches.Morris: Our job is basically just to maintain the aircraft, keep them safe.Narrator: An aircraft ends up here if it's scheduled for maintenance or if something is wrong. And one of the biggest issues the team deals with is engine repairs. When that happens, there's $32 million on the line.First, a plane is grounded and then tugged into this giant hangar.Morris: We can have six wide bodies and six narrow bodies in simultaneously. So that's a lot of work that can be done in here at the same time.Narrator: Technicians run a diagnosis for an engine problem. If they determine it needs fixing, it heads to the engine shop. This division of TechOps started in 1961, at the beginning of the jet age. Today, engine repair is the most expensive section of TechOps, with $100 million in new facilities just in the last two years.Ray Romesburg: So, the engines come into our shop, and we take the engines apart completely. We inspect the parts, and anything that we find wrong with them, we are able to repair those things before putting them back into the engine. These are very high-valued parts, so repairing them is the most economical way to keep our engines flying.Narrator: Before parts can be fixed up, they get a chemical bath.Morris: So, most of the engine parts are cleaned in this area. If there's any contaminants on the blades or any of the parts of the aircraft, you want to make sure that's removed so you can get maximum performance of the engine because of the airflow. I used to work back here many years ago. I started back here.Narrator: Next, the engine heads to one of seven bays in the engine shop.Morris: What's going on? How you doing? Why's everybody got a smile on their face? That's what I wanna know. Y'all act like y'all happy.Technician: Look where we at, man!Morris: How you doing?Technician: Hey, how's it going, buddy? You doing OK?Narrator: Here, FAA-licensed technicians work on and reassemble the engine.Matthew Jackson: We have approximately 900 engines a year come through for various levels of maintenance.Narrator: Those cover 14 different kinds of engines.Jackson: I want to show everybody a BR715 engine. So, this engine in particular is undergoing light maintenance, where it doesn't get fully disassembled.Narrator: Light maintenance takes anywhere from 15 to 35 days. Heavy maintenance, on the other hand...Jackson: That's where we'd fully disassemble the engine, go into the internal areas of the engine, and basically refurbish the entire components associated with the engine.Narrator: That can take over two months.Jackson: 2,000-piece parts that have to be individually inspected and maintained. This engine is flying approximately five times a day. An engine remains on wing from anywhere from a few years to, some of our engine types, as many as seven, eight, or nine years. So we want to take the opportunity while they're here to do everything that we can to ensure that they're reliable for the fleet.Narrator: If an engine can stay in the air longer, it saves Delta and its customers money. Remember, these things are expensive, and so are all the parts that go into them. This part costs $12,000.Jackson: And there's 80 of them.Narrator: Add in the price of the surrounding parts, and...Jackson: We're looking at about $2.2 million sitting on the table. This is the highest technology portion of the engine. These blades operate at very high temperatures and very high stresses.Narrator: These fan blades...Jackson: Out of the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent engines.Narrator: Are made of precious metals and alloys and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each.Jackson: So, a modern jet engine is worth several million dollars. The maintenance of those is very, very important to maintaining the value of that asset.Narrator: Only about 20% of all the engines fixed here are Delta's. The rest are for customers.Jackson: That's probably UPS right there. We have Azure, Gol, Brazil, and Virgin Australia engines.Narrator: Repairing all these flying beasts takes a lot of skill and caution.Morris: Anything can kill you that we touch. Everything is stronger than us. Everything is heavier than us. You have to have your head in the game.Narrator: You're looking at a 13,000-pound engine.Morris: Lifting something that heavy, it requires a lot of safety, coordination, teamwork, and attention to detail.Narrator: But an engine that runs smoothly is just as important. There's no pulling over on the side of the road if there's a problem. They're 40,000 feet in the air, so nothing can go wrong.Jackson: But it's an example of the precision and the very close tolerances that everything has to be built to, because of how fast it all spins and how hot it all gets.Morris: We want you to get to your destination safely. And that's what this is all about.Narrator: To keep track of the thousands of repairs and checks, technicians record every step of the disassembly, assembly, and inspection process on work cards. They also rely on fancy gear, from the laser welding equipment to the turbine grinder.Jackson: That precision is necessary to ensure the efficiency of the engine when we return it to service.Narrator: All this new equipment also means Delta can repair some of the most technologically advanced commercial engines in the world. That happens out in the newer facility, opened in 2018. Once technicians have restored all the parts, they converge back into one of the engine bays. Here, they flip the engine vertically and start reassembling it.Jackson: The core engine is complete at this point, and they're putting on all of those accessories and harnesses and piping on the outside of the engine.Narrator: But before an engine can go back on a wing, there's one more step. Quality testing. That happens at the world's largest engine test cell, a short drive or a bike ride from the engine shops.Ken Edwards: You don't want to encounter problems while you're installing an engine on-wing. So it comes to us, and we make sure everything's passed off and clear. This part of the building is where the engines come in. We install and rig the engine. So, basically, we put the test equipment on the engine and get it ready for it to run. And then this part of the engine is your actual test chamber.Narrator: The test chamber is the newest addition to TechOps and where the engines are test run. It can handle 150,000 pounds of thrust, even though no engine actually has that kind of power. Engineers run tests 24/7, monitoring engine performance from the control room.Edwards: The reason we need 24/7 is because of the production coming out of the shops. So, I can have three engines prepped and ready, but I got one test chamber. So, you know, we want to keep that test chamber running and keep it moving. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A newly released US Department of Transportation <a href="https://www.oig.dot.gov/library-item/37731">report</a> says the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/faa">FAA</a> failed to properly supervise <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/southwest-airlines">Southwest Airlines</a>, leading to safety hazards.</li><li>The report lists 11 recommendations, and the FAA said it agrees with all of them.</li><li>Among other issues, Southwest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-maintenance-records-missing-faa-report-2020-1">carried more than 17 million passengers in planes that did not have mandatory records documenting maintenance</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it agrees with all 11 recommendations made by the US Transportation Department's Inspector General that faulted its oversight of Southwest Airlines, according to a final report released Tuesday afternoon."Given the significant unresolved safety concerns that FAA has identified at Southwest Airlines, it is clear that the agency is not yet effectively navigating the balance between industry collaboration and managing safety risks at the carrier," the report said.The report said Southwest Airlines operated more than 150,000 flights carrying 17.2 million passengers on 88 used Boeing 737 jets without confirmation that required maintenance had been completed.The report also said the FAA has not "effectively overseen Southwest Airlines' systems for managing risks.""Our review identified a number of concerns regarding FAA's safety oversight of Southwest Airlines," the report said, including that Southwest is still flying planes without the proper maintenance documentation.According to the report, "FAA inspectors do not evaluate air carrier risk assessments or safety culture as part of their oversight of Southwest Airlines' safety management systems," because "FAA has not provided inspectors with guidance on how to review risk assessments or how to evaluate and oversee a carrier's safety culture.""As a result, FAA cannot provide assurance that the carrier operates at the highest degree of safety in the public's interest, as required by law," the report added.The FAA said in a response included with the report it concurred with all 11 recommendations by the inspector general and acknowledged that its office overseeing Southwest "did not perform in accordance with existing guidance."The FAA has also come under scrutiny from lawmakers for its oversight of the newer Boeing 737 Max jet, which was grounded last March after two crashes that killed a total of 346 people.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-maintenance-records-missing-faa-report-2020-1">Details from the report first emerged in late-January</a>. Southwest told Business Insider at the time that it was disappointed in and disagreed with the report."The success of our business depends on the Safety of our operation and any implication that we would tolerate a relaxing of standards is unfounded," the airline said.Southwest told Reuters Tuesday that eight of the 88 used jets remain out of service "and are currently in heavy checks." Southwest added it adamantly disagrees "with unsubstantiated references to Southwest's safety culture."On January 10, the FAA said it was seeking to impose a $3.92 million fine on Southwest for alleged weight infractions on 21,505 flights on 44 aircraft between May 1 and August 9, 2018.
