In a bid to ensure the safety and convenience of an estimated 45 crore devotees, the Yogi Adityanath government is preparing for the upcoming Maha Kumbh. For the first time, the grand event is being digitized on such a large scale, leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and social media platforms to enhance management and security. "Around 2700 CCTV cameras are being installed in the district and the whole fair area. This will help us in crowd management... Cameras with AI features have also been installed in the area. These cameras will automatically send us alerts based on their feed. This step would be in addition to human intelligence. AI is adding to the information of human intelligence. We have already installed 25 police stations in the area and a total of 56 stations will be placed,” said Rajesh Dwivedi, SSP, Mahakumbh Mela. AI-powered cameras are being installed throughout the Kumbh site to monitor the massive crowd and ensure 24/7 surveillance. These state-of-the-art cameras will not only bolster security but also assist in reuniting individuals who may get separated during the event. In addition, popular social media platforms like Facebook and X will provide immediate assistance in locating lost relatives, streamlining the process of reuniting families amidst the sea of pilgrims. The Mela administration has devised an extensive plan to address this concern. A digital 'khoya paaya kendra' (lost-and-found centre) will go live on December 1, utilizing advanced technology to reunite separated individuals quickly and efficiently. The entire fair area is being equipped with 328 AI-enabled cameras, which have already been tested at four key locations. These cameras will monitor the crowd 24/7 and assist in locating lost individuals. Under the directives of the Yogi government, the large-scale installation of these cameras is in its final stages. The digital lost-and-found centres will immediately register every missing person's details digitally. Once registered, the AI-powered cameras will begin searching for the individual. Additionally, information about missing persons will be shared on social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), making it easier to locate them quickly. Face recognition technology will be used at the Maha Kumbh to identify individuals who get separated from their loved ones. Still, they remain near or above 4.5%, which is a tempting return in exchange for no risk. But as we head deeper into an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cut-rates-inflation-powell-blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-2024-10#:~:text=The%20Federal%20Reserve%20will%20disappoint,a%20rise%20in%20global%20inflation.">interest-rate-cutting cycle</a>, the benefits of sitting on the sidelines will diminish, and investors will need to rethink their strategy.While the perk of a low-risk asset with a decent yield seems like a sweet deal, it actually did some investors a disservice, says Mark Malek, the CIO at Siebert. Specifically, those who didn't have liquidity needs but chose to sit in cash anyway missed out on a strong year for the S&amp;P 500."I'm going to say something controversial, which is that we weren't having as many of these conversations when money markets were almost zero," Malek said. "Clients had no other alternatives, so they were putting their money to work in the equity markets or in the best bonds they could find. Many people should have probably invested in equities and would've probably gotten great returns."The main advantage money markets give investors is quick access to their cash, followed by lower risk and then a decent yield. The former is harder to match. But the latter two can be found in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/treasury-bonds">Treasuries, notes, and bonds</a>, Malek said. By sticking to shorter-term Treasuries, investors can still meet their liquidity needs."That's where the whole conversation changes because now you're saying, 'OK, we can get you into a three-month bill, but then you would want to hold that,'" Malek said, adding that he would never advise a client who needs liquidity to go further out and buy a two-year note. And anyway, the yield curve is inverted, meaning there's no term premium, with the best yields coming from the one-month out to the six-month Treasury.It's about gauging liquidity needs and then sticking to bills or looking for older notes that are months away from maturity, Malek said. The main challenge with going shorter term is the rollover risk, which happens when you're faced with less favorable yields once the current Treasury matures. For investors who don't have immediate cash needs, Malek advises a six-month bill at a 4.5% yield since he expects rates to be 75 basis points lower by then. If liquidity needs arise, investors may be able to sell for a profit if the Fed's cutting cycle is steeper than expected, he added.Investors with a bit more of a risk appetite who want to maintain a yield just over 5% should consider investment-grade corporate bonds, which are AAA to BB-rated, Malek said.<h2 id="ac89e755-a442-47d7-b00d-34e1f8eb6a94">Dollar alternatives</h2>While interest-rate cuts are part of the move away from cash, there are other factors that make the dollar, in general, a crummy place to be right now, says David Miller, the CIO at Catalyst Funds.Inflation remains present even if it's not as high as it was. The Federal deficit continues to balloon. And, the weaponization of the dollar against countries like Russia has made it less attractive globally, Miller noted.Based on these additional concerns, Miller says the closest alternative would then be <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/gold-price-record-high-became-etf-interest-rates-trump-costco-2024-10">gold</a>, and big money is vying for it. Central bank demand for gold reached its highest in a decade in 2022 and 2023. Although it slowed in 2024, it was still up by 6% from a year ago in the second quarter, according to the World Gold Council.Investors may feel queasy about the asset as it hits peak prices near $2,800 per ounce. But you have to consider the value of the dollar against that backdrop, Miller noted. Simply put, the M2 money supply, which includes cash and cash alternatives, has skyrocketed since 2020 by over 36%, debasing the dollar.For investors looking for that gold alternative, Millers says they can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-in-gold-price-record-highs-safe-haven-2024-10">buy coins, bars, and even gold ETFs</a>.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/buy-bitcoin">Bitcoin</a> is another alternative that more risk-prone investors look to. So this current year, I do not see any disruption," the official said. Kapur, who essayed the titular Night Manager, said he is happy that his series debut received an International Emmy nod and it is a "big moment" for the entire team. Most investors surveyed agreed that elections influenced how they allocated funds in their portfolios.Overall, 46% of the investors surveyed said that a Republican sweep across the White House and Congress would be the optimal outcome for the market. 29% of investors preferred split control of the White House and Congress. Investors can benefit from both parties: Republicans would likely pass investor-friendly tax and energy policy, while Democrats would pass more favorable US-China and trade policy.Here's what Wall Street is worried about this election cycle and how top money managers are preparing their portfolios for November.<h2 id="c2ba8bee-0e1c-46d1-9407-b7e2f9e02c0b">Wall Street's 3 biggest election concerns</h2>There was one clear standout issue: the national debt. 35% of institutional managers flagged the US national debt as the most important policy change they wanted to see.Kara Murphy, chief investment officer at Kestra Investment Management, says the deficit will continue to balloon from its current level of $35 trillion as higher Medicare, Social Security, and interest expenses stack up.However, neither candidate has put forward a concrete plan to address this issue."The candidates' relative silence on the deficit shows that it's an American problem – not just a party problem – and one so big and intractable that the next president isn't likely to be able to make much of a near-term impact," Murphy wrote in a note.Seventeen percent of investors responded that fueling economic growth was their biggest concern. There are both domestic and international challenges to the health of the economy, with institutional managers flagging issues such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-odds-rising-inflation-geopolitcal-concerns-surge-investing-strategy-volatility-2024-10">inflation</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stocks-hedge-geopolitical-china-risk-retaining-upside-international-beijing-stimulus-2024-10">US-China relations</a>, and tariffs.It's likely that the next administration will implement new tariffs, regardless of which party takes the White House, according to PGIM.While Trump is well-known for his love of tariffs, Harris isn't exactly anti-tariff either. Murphy points out the Biden-Harris administration has kept many of the tariffs that Trump passed during his presidency, and even enacted additional tariffs.Increased trade tensions could have negative implications for both US and international markets in China, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Tariffs often have inflationary effects by slowing down trade and raising prices for consumers. The results of the presidential election will clarify how many new tariffs to expect.The third biggest concern was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/immigration-policy-boost-labor-market-national-debt-job-market-taxes-2024-10">immigration reform</a>, with 15% of investors placing it as their most important policy concern. Investment advisor Research Affiliates sees an urgent need for immigration reform as the US population growth rate continues to decline, harming the labor market. According to Research Affiliates, policies such as removing the cap on green cards for immigrants with higher education degrees in STEM fields could solve this issue.<h2 id="96c99c05-0f43-49e9-bcc5-3b7a39e8f265">Preparing your portfolio</h2>The tight race makes it unlikely for a single party to hold a sweeping majority in the House and Senate and pass drastic policy changes. However, the election winner still has implications for portfolios.One survey respondent, a portfolio manager for a US-based pension fund, said elections have "been a big factor" when it comes to allocating money. A Republican president is likely to benefit the oil and gas industries, while a Democrat win will boost healthcare, the portfolio manager said.An investment director for another pension fund shared the following investment outlook regarding the ongoing decline in globalization and trade relations: "Given reshoring, friend-shoring, [and] less reliance on the likes of China and other trading partners from past decades, we've felt even more confident in some of our exposures, particularly within the US. Basic industry, materials, very middle-market and lower focused, but dedicated US exposure such that if we really continue along this deglobalization path, and if there are further and future rifts, these are the areas that are going to benefit the most."As international supply chains experience disruption and technological competition with other countries increases, investors should put money into the companies and sectors benefiting from deglobalization while also adding safe-haven assets to their portfolios. The trend of reshoring will lead to increased domestic construction and jobs.PGIM recommends gold, Treasurys, and the US dollar as examples of stable, low-risk assets.

Here's what Wall Street money managers are doing to prepare their portfolios for their 3 biggest election concerns 

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="19935006" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Guyana" source="keywords">Guyana</keyword>, the tiny South American nation, plans to give $500 to every citizen aged 18 and over.</li><li>Its president said the <keyword id="21044249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cash-payments" source="keywords">cash payments</keyword> aim to narrow disparities and help with higher living costs.</li></ul>The world's fastest-growing economy is giving the equivalent of $500 to each of its adult citizens as it works to share its newfound oil wealth and soften the sting of higher living costs. President <keyword id="21170274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohamed-Irfaan-Ali" source="keywords">Mohamed Irfaan Ali</keyword> of Guyana, the South American country with just 800,000 people, announced the move last week and said his government would begin distributing the cash immediately. He previously said each household would receive the Guyanese-dollar equivalent of $1,000, but switched to an individual payment after locals raised concerns about how a household would be defined and how the money would be shared within each home. "This is how we are promoting prosperity, ownership, distribution of wealth," Ali said. "This is how the resources and revenue of this country are being spent every single day to lift the lives of people, to expand national wealth, coastal wealth, and community wealth." Guyanese authorities have taken other steps to combat the rising cost of living, the post noted. They've removed more than 200 taxes and fees, including the excise tax on fuel and VAT on water, electricity, and some basic foods. They also gave a one-time, tax-free grant worth about $120 a person to a group that included teachers and public servants last year. Nicolas Suarez, a senior economist at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence who covers Latin America, told Business Insider the original plan would "increase the average household's disposable income, alleviating some budget constraints." He estimated the initial program's scale at 1.5% of national GDP and 7.9% of Guyana's Natural Resource Fund, which officials set up in 2019 to prudently manage the country's oil revenues. The scale of the updated plan is less clear. World Health Organization data suggests there are about 711,000 Guyanese aged 15 and over, so if we assume the 18+ population is 660,000 people and all of them receive $500 each, the program could cost $330 million —not far off the government's estimate of $290 million for the original household payout. "In the short term, this measure could boost private consumption growth, but it may not ease <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword>ary pressures," Suarez said about the previous plan. Business Insider has verified his education and employment history.When I picked banking as a career, I had very little idea of what the job would actually involve. I'd never even heard of the big names like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — but banking felt novel and challenging to me.My first job out of school was at DBS Bank, where I did corporate foreign exchange sales. I was an engineering graduate and not as savvy as my colleagues, who majored in business administration.After two years, I decided to leave DBS and get my master's in finance at Lancaster University. I wasn't able to secure a job in London, though. I ended up returning to Singapore in the thick of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.As jobs were scarce, I decided to take work in risk management instead. That was when I joined Standard Chartered.I was fortunate to have a good boss. He really believed in me and sent me on secondments to London and Hong Kong. That kickstarted my international career.I later moved on to Citibank in 2001, where I worked on global markets. In 2005, I saw that China was liberalizing its financial sector, so I asked my boss to post me to China, and I spent two years there.Working in China was eye-opening. Compared to a small country like Singapore, there were lots more industries, such as mining and shipping, to cover.I then relocated to Hong Kong and switched my focus to investment banking and Asia-centric transactions. That paved the way for me to join UBS as a managing director.<h2 id="6126e89b-83ba-409f-829f-7c6830f6f066">I can play the game, but I don't enjoy the game</h2><div type="image" title="Eric Sim giving a lecture to students." height="768" width="1024" msid="115431925" hostid="261" sizebytes="84092"></div>To be honest, I've always thought of leaving banking. Back in 2005, I thought of returning to college to study architecture. I applied for a spot and got accepted into the program after passing a test.But I decided against it. If I went back to school, I would have to study for five years and accrue two years of practical experience before I could qualify as an architect.That was a huge opportunity cost for me, as I could have made up to a million dollars if I had stayed with banking during the same period. I was in my mid-thirties then, and I still had to pay my mortgage. It didn't make financial sense to leave banking then.That said, I also recognized that while I could play the game, I didn't enjoy it. For most people who go into banking, the norm is to work as much as you can and retire when you're 60.However, that leaves you with very limited choices in life. Your health may deteriorate, and you won't be able to travel as much.So after spending over 20 years in banking, I left UBS in 2017.At that point, my health was still good, and I had sufficient savings. That meant that I could pursue the things I liked, and start a new career in professional speaking and executive coaching.In this phase of my life, I'm now focusing on satisfaction, meaning, and fulfillment. Through my work as a speaker and lecturer, I have been able to share my know-how in banking and career planning with more people.<h2 id="cd01a843-0073-4c6f-b1d9-e32d59c1e82f">It is a lot harder to make it in banking these days</h2><div type="image" title="Eric Sim standing in front of the London Bridge." height="768" width="1024" msid="115431926" hostid="261" sizebytes="39050"></div>Banking is really just a sales job. It is about knowing what your customer wants and then building a relationship. You want to be the first person the client calls when they have a problem.But succeeding in banking is a lot harder these days. In the past, there was less competition and less regulation within the sector. It was easier for the banks to make money.Things are different now. After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, a lot more people now know how much money bankers can make. "That gives Russia some advantage over China, as their relationship has chilled somewhat."On Wednesday, Putin rubbed shoulders with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bernama.com/en/news.php?id=2336886">Malaysian Prime Minister</a> Anwar Ibrahim in Russia. The two countries were set to discuss a range of issues, including trade and investment.This meeting came on the heels of Putin's trip to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongolia-explained-oil-why-didnt-arrest-putin-2024-9">Mongolia,</a> where he met President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh.Mongolia, as a member of the International Criminal Court, should have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-visiting-mongolia-icc-arrest-warrant-could-arrest-unlikely-expert-2024-8">arrested Putin,</a> who has an ICC arrest warrant against him.But the East Asian nation said it couldn't throw Putin in jail because it depends on Russia — an oil and gas giant — for its energy security."This supply is critical to ensure our existence and that of our people," a Mongolian government spokesperson told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/mongolia-failure-arrest-vladimir-putin-international-warrant-international-criminal-court/">Politico.</a><h2 id="f0d1f4e5-36a9-4e82-ba4c-d30ab06a9d6a">It's about neutrality — and the economy</h2>Mongolia's explanation underscores the scale of Russia's economy. It's the 11th largest in the world and has an annual GDP of about $2 trillion, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?most_recent_value_desc=true">World Bank.</a>While Russia's economy pales in comparison to the US' $27.4 trillion GDP, Russia is still an important partner for many developing economies.In particular, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=709&amp;t=6.">Russia</a> accounts for about one-tenth of the world's oil production, making it an important resource supplier.Before its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia's single largest trading partner was the European Union.In the last two years, Russia has managed to pivot to supplying <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-divert-oil-exports-europe-india-china-circumvent-sanctions-2023-12">China and India,</a> as well as nearly anyone who wants to buy discounted energy, be it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/sri-lanka-source-crude-oil-imports-russia-sanctions-fuel-shortage-2022-10">Sri Lanka</a> when it was in an economic meltdown just two years ago or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/turkey-saves-2-bln-russian-oil-imports-soar-despite-sanctions-2023-12-18/">Turkey</a> — a NATO member and aspiring EU member.While some countries, like China and Vietnam, have historical ties with Russia, others, like India and Sri Lanka, have also cited economic self-interest for their ongoing relationship with Russia — particularly if they're in difficult conditions themselves. Most, if not all of them, have also taken a neutral position on the war in Ukraine.Serik Zhumangarin, Kazakhstan's deputy prime minister, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-16/kazakhstan-will-not-blindly-follow-sanctions-on-russia-official-says">Bloomberg</a> last month that the country would no longer "blindly follow the sanctions" if the restrictions impact the country's key companies. Russia was Kazakhstan's largest trade partner before the war started.He told the media outlet that some of the sanctions against Moscow had hurt Kazakhstan more than Russia, and the West has done nothing to compensate the Central Asian nation.Using the economy to explain cozy diplomatic relationships with Russia appears to be gaining favor now that the Ukraine war is in its 31st month.After all, Russia is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-resilience-sanctions-costly-unattainable-isolate-large-globally-integrated-economy-2024-2">large and globally integrated economy</a> that even the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-lng-natural-gas-exports-europe-price-asia-2024-8">European Union</a> is still trying to decouple from.Even China, which in 2022 declared its friendship with Russia as a partnership with "no limits," now appears to be more keen on presenting the relationship in more pragmatic, businesslike terms.Just last month, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/chn/gxh/tyb/zyxw/202408/t20240821_11477597.html">China framed</a> Vice Premier Li Qiang's visit to Russia as one that seeks "complementary advantages and huge potential for practical cooperation" between Moscow and Beijing.<h2 id="1d83462f-51a7-4e76-82db-0f7f3244cb44">Russia is wooing the Global South</h2>Partnering with Russia on economic terms is unlikely to alarm the US and Europe, even if there are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.state.gov/briefings/department-press-briefing-july-8-2024/">concerns</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/us-rebukes-vietnam-ahead-expected-visit-by-russias-putin-2024-06-17/">strong criticism.</a>"Russia's foreign policy blitz is unlikely to be a threat to the EU and NATO," Syracuse University's McFate said.That's because Moscow is not making military alliances with partner countries to attack Europe, which views Russia as its top threat, he said. For the US, Russia is a distant second after China.Even so, there still may be changes afoot.Moscow is pushing a narrative of the Global South as a force in shaping an alternative world order, with the emerging nations of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brics-summit-countries-interested-brazil-russia-india-china-south-africa-2023-8">BRICS</a> — anchored by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — forming an economic bloc.Russia is the BRICS chair this year, and Putin has invited Mongolia to join the group's summit in October. Malaysia applied to join the group, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://en.antaranews.com/amp/news/324871/joining-brics-based-on-president-elect-prabowos-decision-minister">Indonesia</a> is also considering an invitation to join the bloc. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/no-concrete-step-turkey-brics-membership-erdogans-party-says-2024-09-03/">Turkey</a> has also said it's interested in joining the group. "Indonesia, Malaysia, and Mongolia are an interesting test of those nations' 'neutrality' toward China, the US, international law (e.g., ICC), and the authority of the United Nations system," McFate said.Russia's push for a multipolar world order resonates with countries who desire a more equitable international order. And Moscow has shown it does have influence over lower- and middle-income countries, as evidenced by the non-participation or low-level participation of some Asian countries in June's Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, Derek Grossman, a senior defense analyst at RAND, a think tank, wrote in a July <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.rand.org/pubs/commentary/2024/07/russia-is-a-strategic-spoiler-in-the-indo-pacific.html">commentary</a> for Foreign Policy."While Russia's sway is not at the level of China's or the United States', it is certainly enough to promote its anti-Western interests and disrupt the already precarious regional order," wrote Grossman.Countries around the world are weighing the dynamics."Regional allies will watch with interest to see if great powers can be played off each other," McFate said.
