<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="85287" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fox-News">Fox News</keyword> has settled a <keyword id="6377259" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lawsuit">lawsuit</keyword> brought by the parents of <keyword id="4567922" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="seth-rich">Seth Rich</keyword>, a Democratic National Committee staffer who was killed in July 2016.</li><li>The network and several of its personalities floated the baseless conspiracy theory that Rich may have been murdered in retribution for sharing internal DNC emails with Wikileaks.</li><li>Police say Rich was likely the victim of a botched robbery.</li><li>The settlement terms haven't been made public.</li></ul><p>Fox <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> has settled a lawsuit with the parents of Seth Rich, a Democratic National Committee staffer killed in July 2016 who became the subject of right-wing conspiracy theories advanced by the network.</p><p>The settlement, announced Tuesday, ends <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098.1.0.pdf">a two-year lawsuit</a> in which Joel and Mary Rich sued Fox News for emotional distress.</p><p>The network, along with several Fox News personalities on social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword>, advanced the baseless theory that Rich had leaked internal documents from the DNC to Wikileaks in the heat of the 2016 presidential campaign and may have been murdered in retribution.</p><p>Rich was killed in July 2016, likely as part of a botched robbery, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/05/17/528804792/unproved-claims-reemerge-around-dnc-staffer-s-death-here-s-what-you-should-know">according to Washington, DC, police</a>, in a neighborhood <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-seth-rich-story-about-fox-news-lawsuit-rod-wheeler-dnc-wikileaks-emails-2017-8">that had experienced a rash of armed robberies at the time</a>.</p><p>The terms of <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098.217.0_2.pdf">the settlement</a> were not disclosed in court filings. Judge George B. Daniels, the federal judge in New York overseeing the case, has not yet approved the settlement.</p><p>"The settlement with Fox News closes another chapter in our efforts to mourn the murder of our beloved Seth, whom we miss every single day," <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeDelMoro/status/1331310470926643201/photo/1">Joel and Mary Rich said in a statement</a>. "It allows us to move on from the litigation we initiated in response to Fox News' May 2017 article and televised statements concerning Seth's murder. We are pleased with the settlement of this matter and sincerely hope that the media will take genuine caution in the future."</p><p>Weeks after the 27-year-old's death, Wikileaks published thousands of emails it said were internal DNC correspondences. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-seth-rich-story-about-fox-news-lawsuit-rod-wheeler-dnc-wikileaks-emails-2017-8">As Business Insider's David Choi previously reported</a>, the leaks gave birth to a conspiracy theory that Rich was in contact with Wikileaks before his death, and that the DNC was behind the killing as part of a cover-up.</p><p>The theory allowed President Donald Trump's allies to divert from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-story-of-how-russians-hacked-the-democrats-emails-2017-11">the fact that Russia was responsible for the DNC hacking</a> and handed the emails to Wikileaks, as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/senate-intel-committee-report-russia-election-interference-biggest-takeaways-2020-8">Senate Intelligence Committee</a> later concluded.</p><p>A local police official <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dnc-seth-rich-wikileaks-politicize-2016-8">told Business Insider at the time</a> that there was "no indication" Rich's death was connected to his employment at the DNC.</p><h2>Fox News hosts pushed the conspiracy theory in 2017</h2><div type="image" title="sean hannity trump vaping fox book" height="1656" width="2208" msid="79398938" hostid="261"></div><p>Fox News floated the conspiracy theory in a 2017 article by <keyword id="10327533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="malia-zimmerman">Malia Zimmerman</keyword>, which Fox News ultimately retracted. The theory <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098/gov.uscourts.nysd.490098.1.0.pdf">was also advanced by</a> Fox News hosts <keyword id="379953" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sean-Hannity">Sean Hannity</keyword>, Steve Doocy, and <keyword id="1399810" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lou-Dobbs">Lou Dobbs</keyword>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-seth-rich-story-about-fox-news-lawsuit-rod-wheeler-dnc-wikileaks-emails-2017-8">as well as</a> Fox News contributors including Newt Gingrich and Geraldo Rivera.</p><p>The Zimmerman article cited Rod Wheeler — a private investigator the Rich family hired at the urging of Zimmerman and other Fox staffers, according to the Rich family's lawsuit — as evidence for its claims.</p><p>Wheeler <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rod-wheeler-seth-rich-murder-fox-news-lawsuit-2017-8">sued Fox News in 2017</a>, claiming Zimmerman fabricated quotes and attributed them to him. The lawsuit was <a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/08/03/635272922/judge-dismisses-suits-against-fox-news-over-seth-rich-story">dismissed</a> a year later. Zimmerman no longer works at Fox News, a network spokesperson told Insider on Tuesday.</p><p>Hannity and Dobbs were scheduled for a deposition in the case, <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-news-stars-sean-hannity-lou-dobbs-to-be-deposed-in-case-of-murdered-dnc-operative-seth-rich">according to The Daily Beast</a>. Fox News settled a lawsuit with Seth Rich's parents, who sued the network after it spread conspiracy theories about the Democratic staffer who was shot and killed in 2016

<p>This was the kind of speech that civil-rights leaders have always been calling on President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword> to give.</p>
<p>At length on Friday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-trayvon-martin-zimmerman-verdict-2013-7" target="_blank">during a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room</a>, Obama spoke off-the-cuff about the death of <keyword id="982826" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trayvon-Martin">Trayvon Martin</keyword> and racial profiling in America. </p>
<p>"He should be commended and recognized," <span>Hilary Shelton, the director of the NAACP's Washington bureau, told Business Insider. "... It'll go down as one of the most important of his presidency."</span></p>
<p>Obama's speech found some detractors, but even those who are normally his harshest critics — like Fox News contributor and RedState editor Erick Erickson — <a href="https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/358304721108340736" target="_blank">said</a> they didn't have a problem with it.</p>
<p>It was a rare moment for the normally polarizing presidency of Barack Obama — one in which both Erickson and Al Sharpton both praised him for a key moment in his time in office. Both Sharpton and Shelton called the speech "historic." Fox News host Chris Wallace compared it to memorable Obama speeches after the mass shootings in Arizona in 2011 and Newtown, Conn., last year. </p>
<p>"Wow! We really do have a black president!" the liberal MSNBC host Toure said. </p>
<p>Robert Zimmerman, the brother of <keyword id="982829" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="George-Zimmerman">George Zimmerman</keyword>, appeared on Fox News and, amid prodding questioning, applauded Obama's remarks as "sincere."</p>
<p><span>"I'm glad he spoke out today," Zimmerman said, later adding that he would have asked Obama to expand his encouragement to "youth of all colors."</span></p>
<p><span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"It might be in situations in their life that they don't feel like they're getting the encouragement from society that they need. That's one of the things my brother was doing before this incident," Zimmerman said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This was one of the few times that Obama, the nation's first black president, has waded into America's broader debate on race — something he has tried, mostly, to avoid throughout his time in office. <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/09/fear-of-a-black-president/309064/?single_page=true" target="_blank"><em>The Atlantic</em>'s Ta-Nehesi Coates pointed out</a> that he has spoken less about race than any other Democratic president since 1961. Obama said Friday, in fact, that he doesn't much care for the proverbial national "discussion on race" or calls to create one. <em></em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This was also his most unscripted. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In 2008, amid furor over his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama gave an address — "A More Perfect Union" — that was large in scope and rehearsed. This time, he stood at the podium of the <keyword id="6356037" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="white-house">White House</keyword> briefing room without a TelePrompTer, pausing and looking down at points to collect his thoughts and put them into words.</span></p>

<p>"There are very few African-American men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me," Obama said.</p>
<p>"There are very few African-American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me — at least before I was a senator.  There are very few African-Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.</p>
<p>"And I don't want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the African-American community interprets what happened one night in Florida. And it’s inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear. The African American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws — everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case."</p>
<p>It was clear that Obama wanted to end his surprise speech with a nod to the future, which he did by reminding the nation of progress in racial attitudes. </p>
<p>He is betting on the future — one that includes his daughters, Malia and Sasha. We're not in a post-racial society, he said. Someday, he hopes, we'll get there.</p>
<p>"Each successive generation seems to be making progress in changing attitudes when it comes to race.  It doesn’t mean we’re in a post-racial society," Obama said. "It doesn’t mean that racism is eliminated.  But when I talk to Malia and Sasha, and I listen to their friends and I see them interact, they’re better than we are — they’re better than we were — on these issues.  And that’s true in every community that I’ve visited all across the country.</p>
<p>"And so we have to be vigilant and we have to work on these issues.  And those of us in authority should be doing everything we can to encourage the better angels of our nature, as opposed to using these episodes to heighten divisions.  But we should also have confidence that kids these days, I think, have more sense than we did back then, and certainly more than our parents did or our grand."</p>

People Are Saying Obama's Off-The-Cuff Speech On Race Was One Of His Most Important Ever

<p>Here are the full remarks of his speech, as provided by the White House. They lasted 19 minutes.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>1:33 P.M. EDT</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>THE PRESIDENT: </strong> I wanted to come out here, first of all, to tell you that Jay is prepared for all your questions and is very much looking forward to the session.  The second thing is I want to let you know that over the next couple of weeks, there’s going to obviously be a whole range of issues -- immigration, economics, et cetera -- we'll try to arrange a fuller press conference to address your questions.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The reason I actually wanted to come out today is not to take questions, but to speak to an issue that obviously has gotten a lot of attention over the course of the last week -- the issue of the Trayvon Martin ruling.  I gave a preliminary statement right after the ruling on Sunday.  But watching the debate over the course of the last week, I thought it might be useful for me to expand on my thoughts a little bit.<span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">First of all, I want to make sure that, once again, I send my thoughts and prayers, as well as Michelle’s, to the family of Trayvon Martin, and to remark on the incredible grace and dignity with which they’ve dealt with the entire situation.  I can only imagine what they’re going through, and it’s remarkable how they’ve handled it.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The second thing I want to say is to reiterate what I said on Sunday, which is there’s going to be a lot of arguments about the legal issues in the case -- I'll let all the legal analysts and talking heads address those issues.  The judge conducted the trial in a professional manner.  The prosecution and the defense made their arguments.  The juries were properly instructed that in a case such as this reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict.  And once the jury has spoken, that's how our system works.  But I did want to just talk a little bit about context and how people have responded to it and how people are feeling. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot I said that this could have been my son.  Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.  And when you think about why, in the African American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it’s important to recognize that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">There are very few African American men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store.  That includes me.  There are very few African American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. The African American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws -- everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Now, this isn't to say that the African American community is naïve about the fact that African American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system; that they’re disproportionately both victims and perpetrators of violence.  It’s not to make excuses for that fact -- although black folks do interpret the reasons for that in a historical context.  They understand that some of the violence that takes place in poor black neighborhoods around the country is born out of a very violent past in this country, and that the poverty and dysfunction that we see in those communities can be traced to a very difficult history.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And so the fact that sometimes that’s unacknowledged adds to the frustration.  And the fact that a lot of African American boys are painted with a broad brush and the excuse is given, well, there are these statistics out there that show that African American boys are more violent -- using that as an excuse to then see sons treated differently causes pain.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I think the African American community is also not naïve in understanding that, statistically, somebody like Trayvon Martin was statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else.  So folks understand the challenges that exist for African American boys.  But they get frustrated, I think, if they feel that there’s no context for it and that context is being denied. And that all contributes I think to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that, from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Now, the question for me at least, and I think for a lot of folks, is where do we take this?  How do we learn some lessons from this and move in a positive direction?  I think it’s understandable that there have been demonstrations and vigils and protests, and some of that stuff is just going to have to work its way through, as long as it remains nonviolent.  If I see any violence, then I will remind folks that that dishonors what happened to Trayvon Martin and his family.  But beyond protests or vigils, the question is, are there some concrete things that we might be able to do. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I know that Eric Holder is reviewing what happened down there, but I think it’s important for people to have some clear expectations here.  Traditionally, these are issues of state and local government, the criminal code.  And law enforcement is traditionally done at the state and local levels, not at the federal levels.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That doesn’t mean, though, that as a nation we can’t do some things that I think would be productive.  So let me just give a couple of specifics that I’m still bouncing around with my staff, so we’re not rolling out some five-point plan, but some areas where I think all of us could potentially focus.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Number one, precisely because law enforcement is often determined at the state and local level, I think it would be productive for the Justice Department, governors, mayors to work with law enforcement about training at the state and local levels in order to reduce the kind of mistrust in the system that sometimes currently exists. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">When I was in Illinois, I passed racial profiling legislation, and it actually did just two simple things.  One, it collected data on traffic stops and the race of the person who was stopped.  But the other thing was it resourced us training police departments across the state on how to think about potential racial bias and ways to further professionalize what they were doing. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And initially, the police departments across the state were resistant, but actually they came to recognize that if it was done in a fair, straightforward way that it would allow them to do their jobs better and communities would have more confidence in them and, in turn, be more helpful in applying the law.  And obviously, law enforcement has got a very tough job.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">So that’s one area where I think there are a lot of resources and best practices that could be brought to bear if state and local governments are receptive.  And I think a lot of them would be.  And let's figure out are there ways for us to push out that kind of training.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Along the same lines, I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if it -- if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I know that there's been commentary about the fact that the "stand your ground" laws in Florida were not used as a defense in the case.  On the other hand, if we're sending a message as a society in our communities that someone who is armed potentially has the right to use those firearms even if there's a way for them to exit from a situation, is that really going to be contributing to the kind of peace and security and order that we'd like to see? </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And for those who resist that idea that we should think about something like these "stand your ground" laws, I'd just ask people to consider, if Trayvon Martin was of age and armed, could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk?  And do we actually think that he would have been justified in shooting Mr. Zimmerman who had followed him in a car because he felt threatened?  And if the answer to that question is at least ambiguous, then it seems to me that we might want to examine those kinds of laws.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Number three -- and this is a long-term project -- we need to spend some time in thinking about how do we bolster and reinforce our African American boys.  And this is something that Michelle and I talk a lot about.  There are a lot of kids out there who need help who are getting a lot of negative reinforcement.  And is there more that we can do to give them the sense that their country cares about them and values them and is willing to invest in them?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I'm not naïve about the prospects of some grand, new federal program.  I'm not sure that that’s what we're talking about here. But I do recognize that as President, I've got some convening power, and there are a lot of good programs that are being done across the country on this front.  And for us to be able to gather together business leaders and local elected officials and clergy and celebrities and athletes, and figure out how are we doing a better job helping young African American men feel that they're a full part of this society and that they've got pathways and avenues to succeed -- I think that would be a pretty good outcome from what was obviously a tragic situation.  And we're going to spend some time working on that and thinking about that. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And then, finally, I think it's going to be important for all of us to do some soul-searching.  There has been talk about should we convene a conversation on race.  I haven't seen that be particularly productive when politicians try to organize conversations.  They end up being stilted and politicized, and folks are locked into the positions they already have.  On the other hand, in families and churches and workplaces, there's the possibility that people are a little bit more honest, and at least you ask yourself your own questions about, am I wringing as much bias out of myself as I can?  Am I judging people as much as I can, based on not the color of their skin, but the content of their character?  That would, I think, be an appropriate exercise in the wake of this tragedy.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"> </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And let me just leave you with a final thought that, as difficult and challenging as this whole episode has been for a lot of people, I don’t want us to lose sight that things are getting better.  Each successive generation seems to be making progress in changing attitudes when it comes to race.  It doesn’t mean we’re in a post-racial society.  It doesn’t mean that racism is eliminated.  But when I talk to Malia and Sasha, and I listen to their friends and I seem them interact, they’re better than we are -- they’re better than we were -- on these issues.  And that’s true in every community that I’ve visited all across the country.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And so we have to be vigilant and we have to work on these issues.  And those of us in authority should be doing everything we can to encourage the better angels of our nature, as opposed to using these episodes to heighten divisions. We will be evaluating our next legal steps," said Fox News in a statement. </li></ul><p>A Manhattan federal court on Friday reinstated a lawsuit against Fox News by the family of Seth Rich, meaning the family can sue the network for publishing a story alleging that the DNC staffer may have been murdered as part of a conspiracy.</p><p>Rich's family in 2018 launched a lawsuit against Fox News for a May 2017 article alleging that Rich may have murdered for the leak of thousands of DNC emails to WikiLeaks. </p><p>Police in Washington DC say that Rich's death in July 2016 was the result of a botched robbery, but that has not stopped an elaborate and groundless right-wing conspiracy emerging alleging he was killed as retribution for leaking the emails. </p><p><a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/conspiracy-theory-about-slain-dnc-staffer-was-planted-russian-intelligence-n1027826">According to a Yahoo News investigation in July,</a> the conspiracy theory was planted by Russian intelligence, and spread by right-wing US media outlets. </p><p>Special Counsel Robert Mueller found in his report into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election that WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange in public statement suggested Rich was the source of the leak of DNC emails published by the site. But according to the report the statements were designed to obscure the real source of the leaks: Russian intelligence. </p><p>Fox News eventually retracted the story after widespread criticism a week after its publication, but it had been pushed by network hosts including Sean Hannity. </p><p>In a lawsuit in 2018 Rich's parents, Joel and Mary Rich, said that Fox's promotion of the conspiracy had caused them serious distress and anxiety. But a judge in the Southern District of New York dismissed the lawsuit. Friday's court of appeals decision overturns that ruling, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-fox-seth-rich/parents-of-murdered-democratic-staffer-seth-rich-can-sue-fox-news-court-idUSKCN1VY1YD">reported Reuters Friday. </a></p><p>The family is suing Fox News, Malia Zimmerman, who reported the retracted story, and Ed Butowsky, and Texas businessman and former unpaid Fox News contributor for emotional distress. </p><p>Fox News in a statement disputed the Rich family's allegations. </p><p>"The court's ruling today permits Mr. and Mrs. Rich to proceed with discovery to determine whether there is a factual basis for their claims against FOX News," the network said in a statement. In it, he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rod-wheeler-seth-rich-murder-fox-news-lawsuit-2017-8">claims</a> that fabricated quotes from him about Rich's July 2016 death were used with the intent of connecting it to the DNC and drawing attention away from the investigation into President Donald Trump's ties to Russia.</p><p>While Rich's mysterious death led to numerous right-wing conspiracy theories, the Fox News lawsuit may finally offer some clarity into what happened to the Democratic National Committee staffer.</p><p>Here's what's behind the controversy:</p><h2>Who is Seth Rich?</h2><p>Last summer, Rich, a 27-year-old DNC staff member, was fatally shot in the back. Though the circumstances surrounding his killing are not entirely clear, local news outlets have reported he was the victim of a botched robbery. Rich was reportedly on the phone at the time and had to quickly hang up. A torn watchband at the scene suggested there was a struggle between Rich and his killer.</p><p>It was the first killing of the year in that particular neighborhood. Two more armed robberies happened in the neighborhood within weeks of Rich's killing, local news outlets reported.</p><p>Rich worked at the headquarters of the DNC as the voter-expansion data director. A <a href="http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Man-Shot-Killed-in-Northwest-DC-386316391.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">statement</a> from Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was then the DNC chair, called Rich a "dedicated selfless public servant" who "saw the great potential of our nation and believed that, together, we can make the world a better place."</p><h2>How Rich's death became a conspiracy that went viral</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Scott Audette/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On July 22, nearly two weeks after Rich's death, WikiLeaks dumped thousands of internal emails it said came from the DNC. Following the release, some right-wing media personalities and outlets, including Breitbart News and the Drudge Report, touted a theory that Rich had been in contact with WikiLeaks before he was killed and that he was murdered as part of a cover-up.</p><p>Rod Wheeler, a private investigator connected to Rich's family and a long-time Fox News commentator, was quoted in an article saying there was evidence that proved the alleged contact between Rich and WikiLeaks. Wheeler's quotes also suggested that the Metropolitan Police Department tried to cover up the nature of Rich's death on behalf of the DNC, an allegation the police department <a href="https://twitter.com/fox5dc/status/864467332055412738">denied</a>.</p><p>Fox News ran the story, also citing a "federal source" who claimed the FBI had examined Rich's computer and found the emails from WikiLeaks. Other than the unnamed person, Wheeler was the only source named and quoted in the article.</p><p>A law-enforcement official told CNN, however, that the FBI was never in possession of Rich's laptop and that a forensic analysis of it was not conducted. Fox News eventually retracted the story and <a href="http://www.fox5dc.com/news/255305734-story">Wheeler said he had no evidence</a> of a connection between Rich and WikiLeaks.</p><p>"I only got that [information] from the reporter at Fox News," Wheeler told CNN.</p><p>Hannity spent several days promoting the conspiracy theory on Twitter and on his Fox News program.</p><p>"Congress, investigate Seth Rich Murder," Hannity <a href="https://twitter.com/seanhannity/status/866454097599356929" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweeted</a> on Sunday. "If Seth was wiki source, no Trump/Russia collusion."</p><p>"Snowflakes with anger issues and impulse control issues. U must believe the 'robbery' gone bad story," another <a href="https://twitter.com/seanhannity/status/866479614142631936" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweet</a> from Hannity said.</p><p>Other Fox News personalities helped promote the baseless theory, including Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera, who <a href="https://twitter.com/GeraldoRivera/status/866752707972956160" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweeted</a>, "1) #SethRich shot in back(2)worked for #DNC which, (3)screwed @BernieSanders 4)#WIKILEAKS screwed DNC(5)Did #sethrich leak?(6)is it related?"</p><p>Kim Dotcom, a multimillionaire internet mogul who is <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/20/kim-dotcom-eligible-for-extradition-to-us-new-zealand-high-court-rules">subject to extradition to the US</a> on charges of copyright infringement, money laundering, and wire fraud, dedicated a large section of his website to the conspiracy.</p><p>He called Rich a "hero" and appealed to Robert Mueller - the former FBI director who was named special counsel to lead the FBI investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to meddle in the 2016 election - to guarantee "safe passage from New Zealand to the United States and back," in exchange for evidence he claims to have on the Rich conspiracy.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://kim.com/">Kim.com</a></span></p><p class="caption">A screenshot from Kim.com.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>The fallout</h2><p>As Hannity continued to spin the conspiratorial web, some staff members at Fox News reportedly grew upset with their prime-time star. <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/22/fox-news-staffers-embarrassed-by-hannitys-conspiracy-theory-crusade" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Daily Beast interviewed</a> nearly a dozen employees, including hosts and reporters, who all expressed dismay.</p><p>"ARE WE STILL AIRING THAT SH--," one Fox News political reporter said in a message to The Daily Beast.</p><p>"The other reporters I've talked to [about this] are similarly pissed about the whole thing," another Fox News reporter told the publication. "Some find it embarrassing, others downright heartless."</p><p>Members of Rich's family conveyed frustration over what they described as Wheeler's "unsubstantiated claims." The family said there were "no facts" and they had seen "no evidence" that Rich was communicating with WikiLeaks.</p><p>"We are a family who is committed to facts, not fake evidence that surfaces every few months to fill the void and distract <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> enforcement and the general public from finding Seth's murderers," a statement from the family said.</p><p>Brad Bauman, a representative for the Rich family, rebuked those he said were seeking to politicize Rich's killing.</p><p>"It's sad but unsurprising that a group of media outlets who have repeatedly lied to the American people would try and manipulate the legacy of a murder victim in order to forward their own political agenda," Bauman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/seth-rich-family-right-wing-media-report-wikileaks-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told Business Insider</a> in May. "We will continue to investigate this story and will provide updates as warranted."</p><p>To this effect, Bauman said Rich's family was grateful.</p><p>"The family would like to thank Fox News for their retraction on a story that has caused deep pain and anguish to the family and has done harm to Seth Rich's legacy," Bauman said in CNN's report. "We are hopeful that in the future Fox News will work with the family to ensure the highest degree of professionalism and scrutiny is followed so that only accurate facts are reported serving this case."</p><p>Rich's brother Aaron wrote a letter to the executive producer of Hannity's show and urged him to find the "decency and kindness" to reconsider the decision to peddle the conspiracy theory.</p><p>"Think about how you would feel losing a son or brother," <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/23/media/seth-rich-family-letter-hannity-fox-news/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the letter said</a>. "Out of respect for the family's wishes, for now, I am not discussing this matter at this time."</p><p>Though Hannity expressed his condolences to Rich's family, at the end of his program that night, Hannity appeared to backpedal on it.</p><p>"There are so many issues here, not the least of which is the Democratic push of their Russia narrative ... There's something clearly happening here," Hannity said. "The 'destroy-Trump media' ... They have been pushing the Russian tinfoil-hat conspiracy story with zero evidence."</p><p>Hannity <a href="https://twitter.com/seanhannity/status/867211447901851649">tweeted</a> minutes before his show ended Tuesday night: "Ok TO BE CLEAR, I am closer to the TRUTH than ever.
