<ul><li>Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan threw in his hat in the ring ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.</li><li>However, the candidates from his party, Makkal Needhi Mayyam, are trailing rivals in every seat.</li><li>The party's vote share in every seat is well below than the 16.6% needed to protect the candidate's deposit.</li></ul>Kamal Haasan launched his new party in February 2018 amid much fanfare and soon after he decided to pit his nascent party, largely made of new comers, into the ring for a fight in the elections for the lower house of India's Parliament, the Lok Sabha. He hogged the headlines with his comments and controversies in the run up to the polls but the results have been far less than competitive. His candidates seem set to lose deposit in every seat that the party is competing in. Candidates have to pay an amount of ₹25,000 to stand in a Parliamentary election. The deposit is returned if the candidate wins at least 16.6% vote, but the money is forfeited if the votes are any fewer than a sixth. In all constituencies that the MNM has fielded its candidates, the vote share far less than the threshold to protect their deposit. While no pundit or opinion poll ahead of the elections gave Kamal Haasan's party any chance of a win, such few votes in every constituency may come as a major embarrassment. In Tamil Nadu, it's the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leading the way so far along with the Indian National Congress. Rivals BJP and its local ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are also trailing in most seats, but not as badly as the MNM that made its electoral debut this time. Vanathi Srinivasan from <keyword id="58687" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP), who is also the national head of the saffron party's women's wing, has won Coimbatore South by a margin of little less 900 votes, according to Electin Commission data at 9:30 pm. After registering a new regional political party in <keyword id="20154" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> named as Makkal Needhi Maiam in February, 2018, the actor-cum-producer Kamal Haasan made a debut in the Lok Sabha election campaign of 2019, for the first time. Haasan did not contest, though. This time, for the state Assembly polls, he has taken a bet on himself. While pollsters never gave the party a winning chance in any constituency, Haasan himself was hoping to send as many candidates as possible to the new legislative assembly that will form post elections. Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), headed by Haasan, contested from 142 constituencies. Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) founded by T.R. Paarivendhar faced the electorate from 40 constituencies. All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) under the leadership of actor <keyword id="1589629" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="R-Sarathkumar">R. Sarathkumar</keyword> fought from 33 seats. Tamilaga Makkal Jananayaga Katchi (TMJK) led by K.M. Shareef faced the elections in 9 seats and Janata Dal (Secular) JD(S) headed by H.D. Deva Gowda contested from 3 constituencies. Key persons of the party facing elections Dr. Mahendran contested from Singanallur constituency. Dr. Santhosh Babu, a former Indian Administrative Service (<keyword id="46130" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAS">IAS</keyword>) officer was fielded from the Velachery constituency. He faced AIADMK and Congress representatives in these seats. Actor Sripriya fought from Mylapore, locking horns with T. Velu of the DMK and former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and incumbent R. Natraj of the AIADMK party. Senior politician Pazha. Karuppiah fought from T. Nagar constituency. However, none of the other party members or the alliance members were able to make a mark in the election. Kamal Haasan has lost to BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan by a narrow margin ⁠— his party is out on a duck

Actor politician Kamal Haasan-led <keyword id="6264434" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Makkal-Needhi-Maiam">Makkal Needhi Maiam</keyword> has finalised a seat sharing pact with two of its allies for the April 6 Assembly polls and it is set to contest from 154 segments out of the 234 constituencies. MNM inked an agreement with actor-politician <keyword id="375764" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarathkumar">Sarathkumar</keyword>'s All India Samathuva Makhal Katchi and Indiya Jananayaka Katchi to jointly fight the polls. According to the understanding reached here late last night, AISMK and IJK would contest from 40 seats each. The primary goal was to contest polls in alliance with a "promise for change and emerge victorious to form the government," the agreement said. However, his last declaration was that a new political outfit (with a “spiritual” ideology) would be born by year end. That has come to a nought. Here’s the translation of Rajinikanth’s latest letter addressed to the people of Tamil Nadu: Greetings to the loving people of Tamil Nadu who have been the source of my life/livelihood. Having ignored the warnings from doctors, I had announced that I would notify my new political party in January, and headed for a film shoot in Hyderabad. The 120-member crew was tested daily for coronavirus and steps were taken to ensure social distancing and use of masks, as the shooting progressed. Despite the controlled environment, we found out today that four people had contracted the virus. Immediately, the director stopped the shooting and got everyone, including me, tested. While I tested negative for COVID-19, my blood pressure was found to be a bit volatile. Medical opinion says that having such sharp rise and fall in blood pressure for a long-enough time might badly affect my kidney that was recently transplanted. Therefore, as advised by my doctors, I had to spend three days in a hospital under supervision. Considering my health issues, the producer, Kalanithi Maran, has deferred the shooting for the rest of the film. Due to this, many people have lost their jobs, suffered losses worth crores, and all this has been caused by my poor health. I see this as a warning from God. Once I have started the party, campaigning through news channels and social media will not be enough to create awareness among people about my political ideology and win big in the election. It’s a fact that no one with experience in politics will deny. I would have to go out on campaign, meet people and draw thousands of people, maybe even lakhs, for my rallies. I had to spend three days under medical supervision in a hospital after COVID-19 struck us among just a 120-member crew. Now, this pandemic has a new strain and a second wave is looming large. Even after a vaccine is available, if I, who has to consume immunosuppressants, have any health issue during the campaign, it may cause a lot of trouble ⁠—physical, economic and mental⁠— to me, and to those who have placed their trust in me and my political journey. I do not want to use those who trust me as sacrificial lambs in the fear of criticism for having gone back on my promise that I wouldn’t worry about my life, and will start a political party. Therefore, I share with deep sadness that I won’t be able to launch a party and enter politics. Only I know how much it hurts me to say this. I seek forgiveness from all members of the Rajini Makkal Mandram and all the fans who have been disappointed/betrayed by my decision. Members of the Rajini Makkal Mandram have, over the last three years, bound by my words, acted with restraint, virtue and honesty, and continued to serve people even during the pandemic. The efforts will not go in vain. The fruits of your virtuous behaviour (punniyam) will protect you and your family. A 'warning from God' makes Rajinikanth break the promise of launching a political party

In fact, his urn of ashes is passed on to his clan for safekeeping until his dream comes true. While Godse’s wish may remain unfulfilled, India’s politics has kept Gandhi’s killer relevant 71 years after his death. Rekindling the debate over his ‘patriotism’ is believed to help consolidate the majoritarian vote that can influence the election result. No wonder, the debate is peaking in India before the final polling day in the 2019 election for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament. On May 13, debutante politician and famous actor Kamal Hassan raked this issue when he called Godse, “independent India’s first terrorist”. This comment was made from Hassan who was campaigning for his new-born political party, Makkal Needhi Mayyam, which fielded candidates in Tamil Nadu. What followed was a political stir that drew nearly everyone into the debate. <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword>’s (BJP) Bhopal candidate <keyword id="40663" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sadhvi-Pragya">Sadhvi Pragya</keyword> Thakur, hit back at Haasan and called Godse a ‘patriot’. “Nathuram Godse will be a deshbhakt (patriot) and will always be so. People who make comments on him, should introspect their own actions,”<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/nathuram-godse-was-a-deshbhakt-says-sadhvi-pragya-thakur/videoshow/69356645.cms"> she said</a>. However, Thakur retracted her statement after her party, the BJP, distanced itself from the comments, but the debate over Godse is still raging on. Hassan defended his <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/kamal-haasan-to-ndtv-on-his-remarks-on-nathuram-godse-not-intimidated-by-reactions-terrorists-abound-2038842">comment</a> even today and said, “terrorists are abound in every religion”. Interestingly, Haasan himself played the role of Saket Ram, who plots to kill Gandhi in the 1999 epic, Hey Ram, which details the protagonist’s journey from extremism to non-violence. Just when Saket Ram was discovering Gandhi’s glory in the fictional story, Nathuram Godse fires at the father of the nation. While the clash of rhetoric on social media is not surprising, someone threw slippers at Haasan for condemning Gandhi’s assassin.

 Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has sought a report from the Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer on Thakur’s comments<a href="https://www.thehindu.com/elections/lok-sabha-2019/pragya-singh-thakur-calls-nathuram-godse-a-patriot-bjp-disagrees/article27149158.ece"> on Thursday</a>. Patriot or not Godse has been a debated topic ever since he shot Gandhi in 1948 as the latter was returning from a prayer meet. The assassin had immediately surrendered, and reportedly, never showed any remorse for his actions. During the famous Red Fort trial, he wrote a long statement as a response to prosecution. This statement was later printed as a book, called “Why I assassinated Gandhi”. A ban of on the book was lifted in 1968. While Godse was hanged for his actions, his undying passion for a ‘Hindu state’ has its fans even now.

Famous Telugu film actor and political debutante Pawan Kalyan who put in a tough fight has lost the Gajuwaka assembly election seat to YSR Congress' T Nagireddy by a little over 16,000 votes. Kalyan's Jana Sena Party has won only a single seat, which has fought the elections in the state for the very first time. The Telugu superstar Kalyan also joined the Mahagatbandhan coalition led by Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party, at a national level. Tough terrain The actor with many superhit movies under his belt, is also the brother of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi. He followed his brother’s footsteps and kickstarted his own political party in 2014 but contested only this elections. But Chiranjeevi’s party Praja Rajyam had failed to make an impact, merged with Congress and later vanished from electoral rolls and people’s minds. Kalyan also chose a tough constituency for his political debut since it is the largest constituency in the state. Also, he had to fight off many ‘outsider’ slurs during the campaigning even as large masses attended his rallies. Hassan’s boys to lose deposit On the other hand, yet another South star Kamal Hassan is struggling too. While Hassan hasn’t contested himself, he fielded 21 candidates in 38 Lok Sabha seats. While rating a fresh bank loan of ₹25 crore (about $350 million) that will be payable in September 2024, the ratings agency described Haasan as "proprietorship firm with interests in directing, acting, and producing mainly involved in Tamil film industry." As a propreitorship firm is not separate from the owner, by definition. So what does the future look like for Haasan? Cash accrual is expected at ₹7 crore to ₹8 crore in the 'medium term' (usually means longer than a year), according to Crisil. However, more than half of that amount will be needed to repay debt before March 2020. In November 2019, <a href="https://www.republicworld.com/entertainment-news/bollywood-news/kamalhaasantheestimatednetworthofthechachi420actor.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Haasan's net worth was estimated </a>at $100 million (₹700 crore). But according to Crisil's latest report, his debt is 1.64 times his net worth. Forbes, while ranking him at 56 in the list of India's richest celebrities, estimated his earnings for 2019 at ₹34 crore. By that metric, Haasan's net worth will be about ₹15 crore, assuming there are no loans other than one mentioned in the report. Attempts to reach out to Crisil for clarification on the disparity failed. The story will be updated with Crisil's response, if any. The good news is that he makes 12 times more money every year than what is required to cover the interest. On the other hand, "volatility in profitability and revenue, inherent in the film industry, will continue to impact the firm, since the income is based on the ongoing films and other programmes," according to Crisil.
