This hasn't really happened, though, and a slew of EVs are hitting the market with nowhere to charge up on a road trip, exacerbating one of the biggest barriers to adoption.<h2 id="7513a323-210d-4f78-a628-38d4f5085936">Charging is a hot potato issue</h2>One thing essentially everyone can agree on in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-misconceptions-about-the-ev-transition-market-sales-2024-5">EV transition</a> is that vast and reliable fast-charging infrastructure is essential. Studies have shown that areas with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charging-logistics-top-barrier-to-electric-car-adoption-survey-2022-7">more access to public charging infrastructure</a> have higher rates of EV adoption, even though a majority of charging happens at home.What no one can seem to agree on is who is responsible for building out public charging infrastructure. And a closer look reveals that perhaps pinning the problem on one entity, public or private, will only slow efforts to grow.Car companies have made some efforts to build out charging infrastructure, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.evgo.com/press-release/evgo-and-general-motors-open-1-000th-dc-fast-charging-stall-as-part-of-metropolitan-charging-collaboration/">partnering with charging companies</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://sourceability.com/post/seven-major-automakers-to-partner-on-new-30-000-unit-ev-charging-network">other stakeholders</a> to install public chargers and help new EV buyers install home charging systems.Tesla, which has always led the way with its Supercharger network, is also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-teslas-charging-partnership-ford-and-gm-works-consumers-2023-6">opening its stations to other car manufacturers</a>, aiding in patching the holes in the public charging network.All these industry efforts have helped to feed an EV charging infrastructure boom in recent years. At the start of 2024, there were some 61,000 public charging stations in the US, more than doubling the amount of stations there were in 2020, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/2024/05/23/electric-vehicle-charging-infrastructure-in-the-u-s/">Pew Research</a> and the Department of Energy.Still, that's way less than the roughly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.convenience.org/Research/Convenience-Store-Fast-Facts-and-Stats/FactSheets/IndustryStoreCount">120,000 gas stations</a> nationwide, and public efforts to grow charging infrastructure appear to be slow-going so far.The Biden Administration has set aside $7.5 billion for charging infrastructure with a vow to add 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. Not out of choice, not for some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/phone-free-vacations-digital-detox-summer-2024-6">zen mindful practice</a> of not keeping my phone next to my bed. It was because, at some point during the day, my phone's charging cord had been commandeered to some other outlet outside the bedroom to charge some other device.Not long ago, there was peace in my charging kingdom. I had multiple iPhone chargers in key locations (bedside, couchside, deskside, kitchen counter). A mini-USB was occasionally in the mix for Kindles or other occasional devices. Everything was compatible, convenient, and within arm's reach.But in the last year, it feels like I've descended into Charging Cord Hell. But it's not just me. The tech companies bear some responsibility, as well as a scapegoat we can all agree to get mad at: European Union regulators.Let's start there. In 2022, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/apple-iphone-getting-usb-c-2022-10">EU passed a regulation</a> saying that all phones, computers, and cameras must have USB-C chargers by 2025. That meant Apple, which used its Lightning charging cords for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-mac-products-great-classic-boring-2023-11">iPhones, iPads, and AirPods</a>, would have to concede and start making new USB-C-compliant devices. (The 2023 iPhone 15 was the first iPhone to use USB-C.)This means a lot of other new devices, like the off-brand Theragun knockoff I bought at T.J. Maxx, now use USB-C for charging.But everything still isn't so simple. Now, I have cords that are USB-C at one end and go into a regular USB brick. Others are USB-C at both ends and require a USB-C brick. Charging up my new fake Theragun (which I don't recommend; I don't know how much better a real Theragun is, but this knockoff didn't magically soothe my sore hip) caused a complete disruption of my bedside power strip.This is probably a familiar experience to you: having a device, a cord, and a charging brick, yet not the right combination of those three things. Perhaps you have stormed around your apartment or house, rifling through drawers and pulling out chargers from other sockets (which you'll regret later) or leaving something charging where it shouldn't be charging (which you will forget later).<div type="image" title="charging plugs" height="884" width="1178" msid="112385137" hostid="261" sizebytes="21198"></div>The other culprit is the tech companies. In 2020, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-launch-without-wired-earbuds-box-2020-10">iPhone 12 was the first to ship without a charging brick</a>, ostensibly to cut down on e-waste. At the time, I wasn't too mad: I was already awash in charging cords and bricks from past purchases. When I'd get a new device, I often wouldn't even bother taking the plastic seal off the new brick and just toss it in a drawer. A decade of iPhone ownership had left me with an overflowing bounty of charging bricks.But slowly and surely, over the last four years, my charging brick supply has dwindled. I imagine this is what it must've been like to live in the Midwest in the late 1800s, and see the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://blog.history.in.gov/flocks-that-darken-the-heavens-the-passenger-pigeon-in-indiana/">flocks of millions of Passenger Pigeons</a>, so massive they could darken the skies for hours, and then witness the creature go extinct within years.At some point, my husband purchased a few multi-chargers, a single brick that could handle several cords at once. One of these broke, and we still have an Anker brand multi-charger, but it does have a significant problem — it tends to slip out of the wall (according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/7/24215215/anker-prime-charger-usb-c-gan-power">The Verge, Anker is redesigning</a> its plug to solve this problem).Yes, buying new multichargers is the logical answer to my problems. Please don't email me and tell me this. I am aware this is a problem that can be solved by throwing money at it, which is, I suppose, better than a problem that can't be solved at all. But I resent having to buy these — they're not cheap! The multi-charger sitting in my Amazon cart is over $80. That's not a lot to pay for peace of mind, but it's a lot to pay for something I used to get for free.I know I'm not the only one rotting away in Cord Hell. I know there are other people out there just like me. Maybe you, even. Responsible gadget owners who haven't significantly changed how many devices we use, but suddenly find ourselves searching around for the right plug, quibbling with their partner over who has the lower battery and greater need to charge the plug next to the couch.I see you. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The New York City mayor has begun formally challenging last week's bribery and fraud indictment.</li><li>His arguments in Monday's motion to dismiss amount to this: SCOTUS lets me do it.</li></ul>In his first formal attack on last week's sweeping public corruption indictment, New York City Mayor Eric Adams takes aim at what his lawyer says is the weakest of the five federal charges: bribery.Adams' argument? It's not bribery if the US Supreme Court lets you do it.In a court filing on Monday, Adams attorney Alex Spiro cites a groundbreaking June SCOTUS decision as reason enough to toss the bribery count.The decision is Snyder v. United States. It says handing a politician a bag of money is essentially A-OK under federal law, so long as there is no specifically stated quid-pro-quo.In Adams' case, the Turkish officials who gave him $100,000 in upgraded flights and luxurious hotel stays never specifically linked those perks to a specific request for something in return, Spiro argues.And these were gratuities, not bribes, the lawyer says.At a press conference after the motion was filed, Spiro compared Adams' $100,000 in flights and accommodations to perks like a hotel room upgrade or a good table at a restaurant, which are regularly extended to politicians."The indictment does not sufficiently allege that Adams agreed to accept benefits in exchange for performing an official act," Spiro wrote in Monday's <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25178330-us-v-adams-mol-dismissal-20240930">25-page motion</a>.It's the first time Snyder — a case named for an Indiana mayor who took $13,000 from a truck company — is being cited as a defense in a major public corruption prosecution.It makes perfect sense for Adams to cite it, said Michel Paradis, an attorney who teaches national security and constitutional law at Columbia Law School."Snyder will be helpful to Adams principally in really putting the government to its proof on the quid-pro-quo elements of the case," Paradis said.Federal prosecutors say Adams enjoyed nearly a decade of globe-circling Turkish Airlines trips. They say that in return, Turkish officials asked for a few small favors from Adams, including that he not mention the Armenian genocide, and that he sever ties with a particular community center.They also say Turkey asked Adams for a large favor, one that Adams granted: in 2021, the then-leading mayoral candidate leaned on city fire officials to bend the rules and approve occupancy for a Midtown skyscraper that held the Turkish consulate.The indictment quotes an unnamed Turkish official telling an Adams staffer that because Turkey had supported the soon-to-be mayor, it was now "his turn" — meaning Adams' — to support Turkey by getting the consulate opened."I know," the feds say Adams responded when told by the staffer that Turkey saw this as "his turn" to reciprocate.Spiro says in his filing that the travel perks Adams enjoyed are the kind of gifts that constituents or foreign dignitaries routinely give, to show their appreciation or gain access to a politician.Snyder — in a majority opinion written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh and joined by the current conservative supermajority's five other justices — broadens the definition of "gratuities" and limits the definition of "bribes."(In addition to Spiro, Adams is represented by Avi Perry and William Burck. Burck is on the board of Fox Corp, clerked for Anthony Kennedy, and, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/02/us/politics/william-burck.html">according to the New York Times</a>, is a friend of Kavanaugh.)In this new, post-Snyder world, the feds must prove that a politician clearly knew that cash or goods are being offered as payment for an official act, and that the official act was taken specifically in response to that offer.Critics of the SCOTUS ruling feared it would open the door to politicians freely taking handouts. "Adams will argue that the Turkish government gave him things out of gratitude for his past friendliness toward Turkey's interests," merely as a "thank you," Paradis told Business Insider.Meanwhile, "the government will argue that Turkey gave him goodies, and he accepted those goodies, on the understanding that he would continue to use his political position for Turkey's benefit," the constitutional law expert said."Prior to Snyder, the government would not have had to show such a tight connection between the bribes and the expectation that Adams would do things for them in the future," Paradis added."Now they do, which is why the indictment puts a lot of emphasis on the consulate and the Armenian genocide allegations."Federal prosecutors have yet to respond to the motion to dismiss.The Justice Department and Spiro didn't immediately return requests for comment for this story Monday afternoon.Adams has pleaded not guilty to the indictment, which also charges him with illegally accepting campaign contributions from Turkish officials and others via straw donors.If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 45 years in prison.
