Goods that are unpacked, unlabelled and unbranded will continue to remain exempt from GST. Besides, a 12 per cent tax on hotel rooms below Rs 1,000/day will be levied, as against a tax exemption currently. GST rate rationalisation is important to boost the weighted average GST rate that has fallen to 11.6 per cent, against 14.4 per cent at the time of launch. The GST Council also recommended a correction in the inverted duty structure for a host of items, including edible oil, coal, LED lamps, printing/drawing ink, finished leather and solar water heater. The Council is likely to discuss on Wednesday the demand for an extension of compensation paid to states for revenue lost from their taxes such as sales tax (VAT) being subsumed into a national GST, besides a 28 per cent tax on casinos, online gaming and horse racing. Non-BJP ruled states such as Chhattisgarh want the compensation regime to be extended or the share of states in the GST revenues be increased to 70-80 per cent from the current 50 per cent. And to drive their point, they cited a recent <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> ruling that decisions made by the Council are not binding on states and any decision not taken unanimously could potentially lead to unraveling of the landmark economic reform. The report of the state finance ministers on GST systems reforms, which recommended biometric authentication of high risk taxpayers and real-time validation of bank accounts too was cleared by the Council. As per data on revenue growth collated for the Council meeting, only five out of 31 states/UTs, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, registered a revenue growth higher than the protected revenue rate for states under GST in financial year 2021-22. With regard to e-way bill on intra-state movement of gold, gold jewellery and precious stones to check evasion, the Council recommended that states can decide on the threshold above which the electronic bill is to be made mandatory. A panel of state ministers had recommended the threshold to be Rs 2 lakh and above.

This six-year-old business that started in a 200 square feet kitchen in Mumbai is run by 47-year-old Geeta Patil with two 21-year-old partners – her son Vinit Patil, and his friend Darshil Savla. While Geeta Patil, who runs the eponymous business, has been making and selling snacks ever since her husband lost his job in 2016, it’s the younger partners who gave it a digital spin. Vineet Patil and Savla are college dropouts, who at one point, set up and ran a small IT services business. They set up <a href="https://patilkaki.com/">a website for Patil Kaki </a>helping scale up the business from 15-20 orders a day to around 3,000 orders monthly, as per <a href="https://www.thebetterindia.com/286270/mom-sells-authentic-maharashtrian-food-in-mumbai-pune-earns-crores/">reports</a>. Her chaklis, modaks, chivdas, puran poli, and even healthy snacks like makhanas which are now well-packaged well, branded, and available online – generated sales to the tune of ₹1 crore in the first five months of FY23 – as of August 2022 when the Shark Tank episodes were recorded. They hope to end the financial year with sales to the tune of ₹3 crore. “They are the emerging faces of New India. Even two years haven’t passed (since the young partners joined the business), they’ve helped you to make a business worth ₹3 crore,” commented shark and Shaadi.com’s founder Anupam Mittal after hearing their pitch on the show. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The bidding begins" comment="subhead2" text="The bidding begins">The bidding begins</cmsannotation> Patil Kaki’s products and business impressed the judges so much that the sharks were fighting for a piece of its pie. It culminated in a bidding war that saw the startup’s valuations more than double within a matter of minutes. Sugar Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh was the first to offer ₹40 lakh for 10% equity that valued Patil Kaki at ₹4 crore. Soon after, Aman Gupta, the co-founder of boAt, trumped it by doubling his offer — ₹40 lakh for 5% equity, valuing it at ₹8 crore. Lenskart’s co-founder Peyush Bansal and Shaadi.com’s founder Anupam Mittal then made an offer that Kaki couldn’t refuse — ₹40 lakh for 4% equity that valued it at ₹10 crore. She had been making and selling food out of passion before 2016. But afterwards, she converted it into a proper business as she had to shoulder the responsibility of running the household. “I couldn’t afford to take it easy any longer. The first order came from a family in Khar. The best part is that even today, we get orders from them regularly,” shared Geeta with The Better India. Slowly, she started getting orders from offices too. However, it was the pandemic that pushed her to prepare and sell dry snacks too. “We started by serving breakfast at the BMC office. Impressed by our cooking, the employees got a letter from the ward office, allowing us to serve them at the office. However, when the lockdown started, the problems started again. That’s when I started with snacks like chakli, chivda, etc,” said Patil on the show. To cater to the growing business, the team took up a 1,200 sq ft space in Santacruz. Patil Kaki hired its first employee in 2019 and now has a team of <a href="https://patilkaki.com/about-us/">25 people</a>. Uniquely both these snack companies are skewed heavily towards Indian snacks. <ul><li><keyword id="7038252" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="yoga-bar" source="Orion">Yoga Bar</keyword> recently entered the children's nutritional <keyword id="527314" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snacking" source="Orion">snacking</keyword> segment, a move that Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of <keyword id="13466990" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yoga-bar-suhasini-sampath" source="Orion">Yoga Bar Suhasini Sampath</keyword> is confident will help take the Rs 200 crore brand to Rs 1000 crore within the next 2-2.5 years.</li><li>We speak to Suhasini who walks us through the brand's journey so far and how they plan to achieve their goal.</li></ul>When sister-founder duo Suhasini and <keyword id="13466989" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anindita-sampath" source="Orion">Anindita Sampath</keyword> Kumar founded Yoga Bar in 2014, the market for energy and protein bars in India was at a nascent stage. However, in the last 8 years that it has been in existence, the brand has been able to carve a niche for itself and got itself a loyal following, of consumers who are on the lookout for healthy snacking options. The brand that started out by selling energy and protein bars has now also expanded its portfolio to Muesli, Peanut Butter, Whey Protein and Gluten-Free Oats. In fact, it recently entered the children’s nutritional snacking segment, adding a much wider segment to its overall portfolio, a move that Suhasini is confident will take the brand to touch the Rs 1000 crore mark within 2 years. “Historically, we have grown 100% year-on-year. We are at Rs 200 crore currently and at this rate, we expect to reach Rs 1000 crore in 2-2.5 years,” she said. She is confident that the brand's entry into the children's segment will help take it to its target soon. Yoga Bar comes under the umbrella of <keyword id="13466991" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sproutlife-foods" source="Orion">Sproutlife Foods</keyword> where Suhasini, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer is responsible for driving high-impact business results and overseeing brand-building initiatives while her sister, Co-founder and CEO, Anindita Sampath, leads the operations, R&amp;D and product inventory and food technology vertical. The brand came into being in 2014 when both the sisters were still students in the US. They felt the need of a brand like Yoga Bar when they would get hungry after a yoga session and picked up a bar. “Anindita took a bar from a Trader’s Joe after our Yoga class and said ‘I wonder why thee aren’t such products in India. She also said, “If I had a product like this, I would name it Yoga Bar, and that’s how the brand was born,” shared Suhasini. After coming back to India, for the first few years, the duo only sold energy bars, but a lot of their consumers started asking for natural protein bars. Then came the breakfast bars because a lot of consumers said they were busy in the mornings with no time to make food. Once the breakfast bars were in the market, the next step was to go deeper into the breakfast category with the launch of muesli and oats. “After the breakfast portfolio, we wanted to focus on the children’s segment because most of what is available for children is loaded with sugar. I am the mother to a two-year-old and am very conscious of what I give her to eat, so we went into infant porridges and kids’ cereals. We also advocate a ‘No-Maida’ policy, unlike other brands, ensuring that kids are not consuming maida-filled snacks,” shared Suhasini. Suhasini also explained that the brand is very particular about the quality of the products they sell and the fact that they have they have their own manufacturing facility helps them keep a strict control on what they put in their products. The brand has also been very transparent about the ingredients it uses in its offerings, something that has worked in its favor, considering there has been a strong movement in the last few years of eating healthy and more natural food products. What is also interesting is that the brand spent hardly anything on marketing in the initial years. So I asked Suhasini what helped them win over consumers in those initial years? “There was inherent trust because the products that we entered with had very clean labels. That's something consumers always appreciated us for, because they could see the ingredients they were consuming. I can say with a lot of confidence that if your mother was making an energy or protein bar for you, she would do it the exact same way we did it, and that’s not a claim that a large company can make. Our process of creating our products is very different from a large-scale MNC. Simply putting some products into the market is not how we do things. We only sell products that we will feed our own families, which is a big difference between us and larger brands. Also, we don't think we will replace homemade breakfast dishes like paratha or poha. But on the days where you feel like you're in a hurry, our products are a good alternative.” Millennials and GenZs are the brand’s primary target audience. So without spending on marketing, how did the brand make its presence felt? “We did not spend much on marketing in the initial years and focused a lot on sampling, and a lot of it happened through word-of-mouth. We do some performance marketing within our channels but we have never run an ATL or BTL. campaign. It was the strength of the product which led to the word-of-mouth,” she added. Yoga Bar’s products are currently available in over 10000 outlets across the country. Currently almost 60% of its sales comes from offline stores. “For our next phase of expansion, we will focus on expanding our distribution, putting our products much wider. We might also run one strong marketing campaign. In terms of getting into newer segments, we might look at coming up with salty and savory snacks using dry fruits and makhanas etc,” said Suhasini.

For instance, makhana makers in Bihar, saffron products makers in Kashmir, tapioca makers in Tamil Nadu, ragi makers in Karnataka etc. can benefit from this. 3. Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (a scheme dedicated to marine fisheries and aquaculture):₹20,000 crore to boost fish production by 7 million tonnes in the next five years. 4. [An existing programme] ₹13,343 crore had been allocated for National Animal Disease Control Programme in January 2020 to ensure 100% vaccination of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and pig population (over 53 crore animals). 1.5 crore cows and buffaloes tagged and vaccinated till date. This will continue in green zones. 5. A new fund of ₹15,000 crore is being established to boost animal husbandry infrastructure development. Dairy producers and processors will be eligible for incentives being provided from this fund. Those who want to set up plants for export of niche dairy products will also be supported. 6. ₹4,000 crore for promotion of cultivation of medicinal plants. 1 million hectares to be covered under herbal cultivation in the next two years. This will lead to income generation of ₹5,000 crore for farmers. Development of a corridor of 800 hectare area along the banks of river Ganga. A network of regional markets (mandis) will be created for medicinal plants. 7. ₹500 crore for beekeeping initiatives. Government will implement a scheme for infrastructure development related to Integrated Beekeeping Development Centres, Collection, Marketing and Storage Centres. This will lead to an increase in yield and crop quality, resulting in increase in income for 2 lakh beekeepers. 8. ₹500 crore for subsidy to farmers of green produce (fruits and vegetables). 50% subsidy for transportation of green produce from surplus to deficient markets. 50% subsidy for storage of green produce. This pilot project will initially be for a period of 6 months - the government says it will be expanded and extended in the future. 9. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/politics/policy/news/what-is-essential-commodities-act-that-nirmala-sitharaman-wants-to-amend/articleshow/75759156.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Essential Commodities Act</a>will be amended to deregulate prices of cereals, edible oils, oilseeds, pulses, onions and potato etc. Stock limits to be imposed only under exceptional circumstances like national calamities, famine with a surge in prices. No such stock limit shall apply to processors or value chain participants, or to any exporter subject to export demand. 10.
