Heavy rainfall causes a minor landslide in Malabar Hills

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/564df97fdd089509228b4689-1162-871/golfball1.jpg" alt="golfball1" data-mce-source="Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple is facing opposition for a new €850 million (£677 million) data centre on the west coast of Ireland from a golf club that dates back to 1902.</p><p>Athenry Golf Club appealed Galway County Council's decision to let Apple construct a new data centre on a plot of land approximately one kilometre from its course, according to documents available through the council's website. The golf club wrote its appeal on October 5 2015.</p><p>Apple <a href="http://connachttribune.ie/apple-plants-seeds-massive-galway-data-centre-048/" target="_blank">filed a planning application</a> to build a 263,000 square foot data centre hall in the middle of Derrydonnell Forest next to the golf course last April. Apple only sought planning permission for one data centre hall but it envisions building up to eight in a phased approach taking at least 15 years to complete. Apple would have to reapply for planning permission each time it wants to build a new data hall.</p><p>Martin Hynes, chairperson of Athenry Golf Club, and John O'Beirn, treasurer of Athenry Golf Club, write in their appeal: "Our primary concern is the totality of the proposed development, especially the extent of the proposed masterplan, and the potential this has to alter the hydrology of the local area and potentially increase the frequency and duration of flooding already experienced at the golf club."</p><p>The golf club paid €220 (£175) to file the appeal with An Bord Pleanála - an independent planning group that decides on appeals from planning decisions made by local authorities in Ireland.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5710d32cdd0895b52d8b45d5-900-604/apple data centre.jpg" alt="apple data centre" data-mce-source="Apple" /><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">A computer generated image of the data centre halls.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In the complaint, Hynes and O'Beirn claim that Apple did not carry out works to deal with possible flooding issues that could arise from the development of the data centre, as the council said it had when it granted Apple planning permission.</p><p>Hynes and O'Beirn also stated that if the data centre build does go ahead, then they would rather construction work is "curtailed on Saturdays as this is our busiest day on the course." They added: "We would also request that due consideration is provided for in the planning consent conditions to facilitate certain key competitions."</p><p>Apple wants to use the data centre - which would be situated in the middle of Derrydonnell Forest near a small town called Athenry, in County Galway - to store European user data and to help power online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps, and Siri for customers across Europe, <a href="https://www.apple.com/uk/pr/library/2015/02/23Apple-to-Invest-1-7-Billion-in-New-European-Data-Centres.html" target="_blank">according to a press release</a>.</p><p>On the issue of flooding, Apple's "Environmental Impact Statement" states:</p><blockquote class="blockquote"><p>A Flood Risk Assessment was undertaken by Arup and is appended to the EIS. The assessment determined that the risk of fluvial flooding of the site is considered to be very low, as there are no watercourses on the site or in close proximity to the site. The site is located in Flood Zone C i.e. outside the 1 in 1000 year fluvial flood extent. Therefore, a Justification Test for the proposed development is not required.</p><p>There is a low risk of groundwater and pluvial flooding of the proposed data centre development. Notwithstanding this, it is proposed to install measures to mitigate this risk. The measures will consist of a comprehensive drainage network, designed to the 1 in 100 year storm standard. The drainage network will consist of filter drains and surface water drains that will convey surface water to infiltration swales around the site allowing percolation back into the natural groundwater system.</p><p>In an extreme pluvial event, any overland flow from the development is likely to flow south-westwards and dissipate and naturally infiltrate through soil strata at the south western area of the site. Therefore, the potential off-site impacts of the development are considered to be very low.</p><p>The lands to the south of the site are noted as "Lands liable to flooding' on old Ordnance Survey maps. The proposed development will not worsen the already existing situation. By careful consideration and adoption of the proposed flood mitigation measures, the risks relating to flooding for this proposed development are considered to be low and at acceptable levels, and therefore comply with Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government/Office of Public Works and Galway County Council guidelines.</p></blockquote><p>County Galway Council granted Apple planning permission for a single data hall last September, despite receiving complaints from 20-25 parties. Complainants argued that the data centre would increase noise and light pollution, flooding, and traffic. An An Bord Pleanála committee of 10-12 experts (including architects, environmentalists, and planners) is currently looking over the complaints and is due to issue a response in May at the earliest. It was initially due to pass a decision in February but it said it had not received enough information from Apple to make a decision.</p><p>Apple was initially hoping the data centre would begin operations at some point in 2017 but the setbacks suggest a later start date may be on the cards.</p><p>Some 5,500 of Apple's 18,300 European staff are based in Ireland, which is also home to its European headquarters. Many of those companies have based their European headquarters in the country, which offers a lower corporation tax rate than other European nations.</p><p>Elsewhere in Europe, Apple is planning to build a data centre in Denmark on the same scale as the one in Ireland. A golf club is concerned that Apple's new Irish data centre will flood its fairways

<ul class="summary-list"><li>OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush could have followed Titanic's example when it came to safety. </li><li>The Titanic actually went beyond its era's safety regulations, including more than the required number of lifeboats. </li></ul><p>It's a tale of two vessels. </p><p>In one case, the makers of the Titanic followed and even went beyond the safety regulations at the time the ocean liner was built — it was the safety regulations that fell short. </p><p>In another, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush <a href="https://www.insider.com/missing-titanic-sub-ceo-told-reporter-safety-pure-waste-2023-6">pushed back</a> on <a href="https://www.insider.com/submersible-expert-oceangate-ceo-hull-defect-will-only-get-worse-2023-6">warnings</a> his <a href="https://www.insider.com/submersible-expert-worried-oceangate-stockton-rush-spurred-on-by-criticism-2023-6">submersible might not be safe</a> and OceanGate <a href="https://www.insider.com/lost-titanic-sub-maker-innovation-vessel-not-classed-industry-standards-2023-6">didn't have the sub classed</a> before it started taking passengers to see Titanic's wreckage — <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-titan-sub-5-key-mistakes-lead-up-catastrophic-implosion-2023-6">to a tragic result</a>. </p><p>Rush was the creator of the Titan submersible, which <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-sub-had-catastrophic-loss-of-pressure-chamber-coast-guard-2023-6">imploded on a mission 12,500 feet below the Atlantic Ocean surface</a>, and could have learned from the makers of the very ship he was so set on seeing. </p><p>Although "Titanic" the movie makes it seem like the creators of the Titanic cut corners because the ocean liner didn't have enough lifeboats to carry all of its passengers, that's not exactly the case. </p><p>In reality, the iconic ship was built to float even if it took on water. In fact, it was made to withstand flooding in multiple compartments, <a href="https://www.vox.com/videos/23587972/titanic-lifeboats-disaster-safety-regulation-solas">Vox reported</a>. </p><p>But its creators never prepared for the extent of damage and resulting flooding caused by that fateful iceberg, a rare sideswipe collision that cut across multiple compartments and flooded the ship. </p><p>And while the number of lifeboats aboard the ship was far too few to suitably fit all passengers, they weren't supposed to. The lifeboats were meant to be ferries to other nearby vessels where passengers could go if they had to flee the water-logged Titanic while it floated. </p><p>The Titanic actually had <em>more</em> lifeboats than was required by — admittedly substandard — safety regulations at the time. <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/57-58/60/contents/enacted">The Merchant Shipping Act of 1894</a> called for all ships weighing more than 10,000 to carry at least 16 lifeboats.</p><p>The Titanic, which weighed a whopping 45,000 tons and made its fateful maiden voyage in 1912, carried 20. </p><p>Rush's Titan, on the other hand, wasn't certified to check if it was following guidelines for safe submersibles. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titan-sub-red-flags-safety-likely-feature-investigation-oceangate-2023-6">As Insider previously reported</a>, submersible experts raised plenty of red flags about the build of the Titan sub before it embarked on its recent mission to the Titanic. </p><p>In 2018, former OcenGate employee David Lochridge sued the company over concerns with the sub, which was not independently certified. He alleged it needed more testing. </p><p>He <a href="https://www.insider.com/lost-titanic-sub-maker-oceangate-warned-hull-safety-2018-2023-6" rel="">also warned</a> the company about inadequate "quality control and safety" protocols. He said Rush asked him to carry out a quality inspection of the sub.</p><p>Rush, in his own words, pushed back on safety regulations, saying they stifled innovation and that at a certain point, "safety is just pure waste." OceanGate insisted on its website that although the sub wasn't classed, it was still safe.</p><p>OceanGate didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Rush's cofounder on Friday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oceangate-co-founder-defends-titan-submersible-safety-record-2023-6">defended Rush</a> and said that any submersible is prone to risk at that level of the ocean. </p>

Stockton Rush could have learned a lot about safety from the Titanic

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2019, I was going through a particularly rough time and searching for something to help me cope.</li><li>I reached out to a friend who had experience with psychedelics. He suggested I do some research.</li></ul><p>My introduction to psychedelics started in 2019. At the time, I was lower than I had been in decades. Generally lost in the world and teetering on an adolescent-caliber chemical chasm, my depression was so bad, I couldn't taste food. My work was suffering. My marriage was crumbling, which strained my relationship with my children. I wanted to stop existing. </p><p>Jaded by past adverse side effects to prescription antidepressants but desperate for relief, I reached out to a friend — I'll call him Jay — who'd been plagued by similar struggles. Jay had long touted the benefits of his quarterly mushroom trips, calling them "a DIY serotonin reboot." Recreational LSD use in college made me skeptical about how a drug that caused an Iron Maiden poster to come to life could also be beneficial for my mental health, but he swore by the benefits of psychedelics, or as he liked to call them, "plant medicine." I imagined myself drinking mushroom tea and waking up a smidge less suicidal.</p><p>"Oh, I haven't used psilocybin since I discovered <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-research-on-the-hallucinogenic-drug-dmt-2018-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">DMT</a>," he said. My interest was piqued.</p><h2>I started looking into DMT</h2><p><a href="https://hightimes.com/culture/dmt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DMT</a> — or dimethyltryptamine — is essentially powdered ayahuasca, a sacred brew made from <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5532431/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the stem and leaves of two different plants</a>, prepared and used ritually by Indigenous shamans in the Amazon rainforest. It is the active ingredient in ayahuasca that causes psychedelic experiences, and is known for inducing such a life-changing — albeit brief — experience that some call it the "businessman's lunch."</p><p>"It's like 20 years of psychotherapy in 20 minutes," Jay said. It sounded exactly like what I needed. He offered to accompany me through my DMT trip with the stipulation that I read Michael Pollan's "<a href="https://michaelpollan.com/books/how-to-change-your-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How to Change Your Mind</a>," a book about Pollan's own experiences with a variety of psychedelic substances (including a type of DMT) that's a great primer for the generalities of psychedelics use, and Rick Strassman's "<a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/DMT-The-Spirit-Molecule/Rick-Strassman/9780892819270" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Spirit Molecule</a>," which focuses specifically on DMT research conducted by an associate professor of clinical psychiatry in New Mexico. Jay was adamant that I make an informed decision. </p><p>In hindsight, I appreciate this prerequisite. I read both books and went down every rabbit hole I could find online, including essays and message boards about possible negative side effects and interactions with the blood-pressure medications I was taking. I found <a href="https://drugabuse.com/drugs/hallucinogens/dimethyltryptamine/side-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">articles</a> that warned of a possible rise in heart rate, dizziness, and nausea. But they also said there was no evidence of chemical dependence on DMT, the one thing I truly feared. </p><h2>Getting ready to trip</h2><p>I flew to Jay's city, prepared to spend a week. It was his first time "sitting" and since he wasn't certain how much DMT I would need, we'd decided I would do a little more each day until I could feel the full effects. Both Pollan and Strassman's books insist on the importance of set (your own personal state) and setting (the state of your physical environment), and we planned my journey for early morning as I was rested and fasting.</p><p>Jay cued up a sample of ancient drumming meditation music and put my journal and pen nearby. I put on a sleep mask. He used a machine called a Volcano to heat the DMT powder into a vapor which collected in a clear cellophane bag with a nozzle. Then, he instructed me to inhale as many breaths as I could before "the veil dropped." I had no idea what that meant.</p><p>My body was surprisingly DMT tolerant. We tried every day for three days to get a the dosage correct. I was frustrated that it wasn't working but glad we had the week to get it right. Each day, each new tested dosage brought me closer to revelation. But it was on the fifth day that Jay administered over twice his own usual dosage that I finally had a full-blown trip.</p><p>After my fourth breath, I understood what Jay said about the veil dropping. My vision went dark and the physical world fell away to something nearly indescribable. It was like I stopped existing as a physical being but I could still see, hear, and feel. In a space of winding, turquoise metallic tape that I can only describe as similar to a garden, a shapeless presence visually communicated things at once mysterious and also deeply familiar through a silent language of fractals, shapes, and colors. See? Nearly indescribable.</p><p>As I slowly came back into my body after what seemed like weeks — but was actually just 15 minutes — it felt like someone had rubbed Icy Hot on certain intimate parts of my body. Jay's voice broke through my daze to remind me to write it all down. But journaling was like chasing a dream; words seemed both inadequate and inaccurate to capture what I'd felt. My hands couldn't keep up with my mind, which was flooded with messages the presence had communicated through images. </p><p>Psychologically, I was immediately and noticeably better, like the third day in a course of strong antibiotics. I felt invincible and euphorically optimistic about the future. But there were also surprising physical effects. Decades of outrunning childhood trauma had robbed me of sexual sensation and libido, otherwise <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3181880/#:~:text=Anhedonia%20refers%20to%20the%20reduced%20ability%20to%20experience%20pleasure.,psychiatric%20disorders%20and%20maladaptive%20behaviors." target="_blank" rel="noopener">known as anhedonia</a>. After <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/what-is-dmt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DMT,</a> I felt like a teenager. Parts of my body that had become numbed by trauma suddenly had sensation, including my nipples. Although many DMT users report psychological benefits, <a href="https://microdose.buzz/news/new-study-shows-physical-healing-potential-of-ayahuasca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">physical effects</a> are apparently rare. Ford, had completed its first Planned Incremental Availability, a six-month modernization and maintenance process intended to give the carrier its final touches before its first deployment.</p><p>Ford entered its PIA after completing full-ship shock trials last summer. Those trials involved detonating three 40,000-pound explosives in the water around Ford, marking the first such tests the Navy has conducted on a carrier since 1987.</p><p>The Ford, which was commissioned in 2017, has struggled through years of delays and cost overruns, caused in part by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-admiral-navy-too-much-new-tech-aircraft-carrier-ford-2021-8" target="_top">the array of new technology and systems</a> installed aboard the first-in-class carrier.</p><p>But the Navy says Ford's shock trials and its PIA — as well as <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/naval/2022/02/14/three-takeaways-from-the-us-navys-first-f-35c-deployment/" target="_top">the first deployment by the Navy's F-35C</a> aboard another carrier — are good news, indicating that Ford is on track for its first deployment.</p><h2>Trials and modernization</h2><div type="image" title="USS Gerald R. Ford" height="801" width="1200" msid="90385390" hostid="261"></div><p>Shock trials are intended to test the survivability of the carrier and its systems. The Navy said the Ford performed very well, needing only 20% of the post-trial repair work that needed to be done on USS Theodore Roosevelt, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-aircraft-carrier-faced-shock-trials-to-test-new-systems-2021-6" target="_top">the last US carrier to go through shock trials</a>.</p><p>"From a severity standpoint, I'd like to say we had zero catastrophic failures on the ship, zero situations where we had flooding, zero fires," Capt. About 40% of the modernization work on Nimitz-class carriers consisted of cutting and welding, Downey said.</p><p>Perhaps the best news is that Ford's eleventh and final Advanced Weapons Elevator was completed, tested, and certified, finally ending a long, arduous, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-new-carrier-gerald-ford-may-deploy-sooner-than-expect-2020-12" target="_top">high-profile part</a> of Ford's development.</p><p>Powered by electromagnetic motors instead of hydraulic systems, the elevators require fewer sailors to operate and can transport more ordnance from weapons magazines to the flight deck "with unparalleled speed and agility," the Navy says.</p><p>The elevators are one of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-admiral-navy-too-much-new-tech-aircraft-carrier-ford-2021-8" target="_top">23 new technologies</a> aboard Ford that improve its capabilities over Nimitz-class carriers, allowing it to conduct faster aircraft sorties and operate with a smaller crew.</p><h2>'Ready to fight'</h2><div type="image" title="E2-C Hawkeye lands on Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier" height="1333" width="2000" msid="90385393" hostid="261"></div><p>Ford ended its PIA with sea trials off the coast of Virginia, demonstrating "that the PIA was successful, enabling live interaction on the high seas with hundreds of upgraded systems and processes," Lanzilotta said.</p><p>On February 28, Ford sailed to its home at Naval Station Norfolk, where the carrier and its crew will undergo several months of training to prepare for their maiden deployment, which is expected to happen this fall.</p><p>The training will include system qualification tests, flight-deck certification, three phases of air-warfare training, and an operational-readiness evaluation of its combat systems. Ford features an array of new technologies - such as the electromagnetic aircraft launch system and advanced weapons elevators - intended to make it more capable than its Nimitz-class predecessors, but reliability challenges and technological integration problems, among other issues, hindered the project.</p><p>But, at long last, the troubled ship, initially expected to deploy in 2018, should soon be ready to do the nation's bidding. The carrier is reportedly in the middle of its final phase of maintenance prior to deployment.</p><p>"Everything is on track," Rear Adm. Gregory Huffman, who commands Carrier Strike Group 12 and the admiral who will lead the Ford strike group on its maiden deployment, <a href="https://news.usni.org/2021/10/25/strike-group-commander-uss-gerald-r-ford-set-for-first-deployment-in-2022">told USNI News</a>.</p><p>"We're still looking to get out as scheduled after the six-month availability. No big show-stoppers that they've come across at all. So very, very positive news coming from the captain and from the shipyard," he said.</p><p>"And then as we come out of that, I think we're going to be set very well to get back in that operational mindset and get ready for the deployment."</p><p>The ongoing maintenance period follows the successful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-it-was-like-on-aircraft-carrier-during-shock-trials-2021-8">completion of explosive shock trials this summer</a>, when the Navy detonated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-detonated-40000-pound-explosive-to-test-new-supercarrier-2021-6">multiple 40,000-pound bombs near the Ford</a> to test its ability to handle the shock of actual combat.</p><div type="image" title="Navy aircraft carrier Gerald R. All that is pretty significant."</p><p>The Navy is eager to get the Ford deployed, not only for its advanced capabilities but also to add an extra carrier to the deployable force amid frequent demands for these powerful naval assets.</p><p>"Getting the Ford-class out there with its capabilities is basically just going to increase the number of carriers and carrier strike groups that we have available to meet the demands," <a href="https://news.usni.org/2021/10/25/strike-group-commander-uss-gerald-r-ford-set-for-first-deployment-in-2022">Huffman told USNI News</a>, adding that he believes the Ford " is just going to give us more flexibility."</p><p>"Then when you couple that with the projected increase in what the Ford should be able to do, that's going to just provide the combatant commanders and other folks with just more options and more things at their fingertips that they can use."</p><p>Though USS Gerald R. Ford brings a lot of new capabilities, it will need to undergo modification in order to eventually deploy with the Navy's most advanced carrier-based fighter jet, the F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-carrier-deploying-with-f-35c-for-first-time-2021-8">The only Navy carrier to deploy with the F-35 is USS Carl Vinson, which deployed in August</a>. The Ford is the latest in the service's unmatched fleet of 11 operational carriers.</p><p>The Navy will also have to consider how to integrate new unmanned systems, such as the MQ-25 Stingray tanker drone.</p><p>"The Ford is designed with more of that modular mindset," Huffman said, explaining that this likely makes it "easier to adapt and flex as new equipment comes online, as we start looking at what new air wing composition is going to be and new technologies are presented."</p><p>The Navy currently has three additional Ford-class aircraft carriers, namely USS John F. Kennedy, USS Enterprise, and USS Doris Miller, in various stages of construction.</p>

<br />Sherpa was the most famous among a generation of top-notch artists, who flooded India’s rock music scene in the 1990s and 2000s, from the east and north-eastern part of India. Born in Kalimpong, Sherpa went on to set up a school for aspiring musicians in New Delhi’s  Hauz Khaz.<br /><br />Sherpa, or <em>Parikrama </em>for that matter, never became icons in the fullest sense but for the time they remained active, they put out some memorable music and thousands of concerts across the country. <br />Sherpa was, arguably, one of the most understated stars⁠— in a genre that celebrates outrage— who played the lead guitar for Parikrama, a rock band that was formed in 1991 and peaked in India in the mid-2000s. <br /><br /><em>Iron Maiden </em>even invited the band to perform in the UK. For a band that had painstakingly created a market for a relatively new genre of music in the country, <em>Parikrama </em>never cashed in on the fan following they had built one good at a time. <br /><br />“They are yet to release a full-length album, because they prefer giving out their music for free. They have had millions of downloads from their site and other related pages. They did release a free multimedia CD of their singles and videos in 2001. The band does not have any policies against their music being copied and distributed. They have made their music available for download on their official website,” the band’s Wikipedia page explained.<br /><br />The early 1990s was a watershed moment for rock and metal music in India, as the Rolling Stones described it, for rock enthusiasts in India. Hence, a regulatory framework should be more inclusive in approach for a nascent category, where the inherent value of these NFTs is still being discovered.”<br /><br />The regulations come almost a month after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to tax crypto investments by 30% during India’s Union Budget. <br /><br />While most <keyword id="12386484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-ads" source="Orion">crypto ads</keyword> did come with disclaimers, they were easy to miss as they appeared at the bottom of the screen or flew by in a few seconds at the end of it. As per the new guidelines, the voiceover will be required to be at a normal speaking pace so that the consumer can’t miss it. In the case of a long-format video of over two minutes, the disclaimer will be required to be repeated at the beginning and at the end of the video and stay on screen for a minimum of five seconds. <br /><br />No crypto advertisement can now contain statements that promise or guarantee future increase in profits either. <br /><br />Overall, the current guidelines indicate that ads cannot mislead, misguide, give false information, or exploit a consumer’s lack of expertise on a subject.<br /><br />Whether it was CoinSwitch’s maiden B2C advertisement with Ranveer Singh or Ayushmann Khurrana’s campaign with CoinDCX, advertisements last year showed how investing in crypto is the future and it is very easy and simple to invest in. All of these ads painted a rosy picture that highlighted the highs and downplayed the volatility and risk of the assets.<br /><br />Therefore, ASCI is now restricting VDA products from claiming that their assets are so easy that consumers do not have to think twice about investing. It is also barring the use of the words ‘currency, securities, custodian and depositories’ in crypto-related ads. <br /><br />The task now for these crypto players is to win the confidence of people, raise awareness and educate, while convincing them that it is safe to invest in crypto. With the adoption increasing among young men and women, private players such as CoinSwitch Kuber, CoinDCX and WazirX had plans to increase their ad spendings to compete with the possible launch of the government's digital currency. With the move from ASCI, the brands will definitely have to relook at their strategy and plan their ad spends. Brands will also have to consider spending on other platforms and mediums to interact with the consumers and will open up new avenues for growth.”<br /><br />Crypto platforms will also have to relook at the duration of their ads because it might get difficult for the audience to understand crypto in 10-15 seconds; it could send the wrong message across and mislead consumers.<br /><br /><strong>Navigating the challenges of advertising in the NFT, Crypto landscape</strong><br /><br />While there are a lot of grays in crypto ads and ASCI guidelines will certainly bring transparency, will it restrict creative freedom? <br /><br />Vijay Pravin, Founder &amp; CEO of bitsCrunch, does not think it will. <br /><br />“With the new tax rules and now ASCI’s regulations, I don’t think it will be challenging for digital products to be creative. In fact, this will bring out more creativity among the Web-3 people. When people came out with the concept of Cryptocurrency, it was laughed at, since it was new and seemed confusing. Likewise, the laws and regulations for cryptos will take time to be able to cover all bases. With web-3, we are enabling an additional asset class for the future. For sure, in the years to come, we are going to witness a quirkier side of NFT and crypto projects than now. Regulations or laws keep changing. This is the current stand but in a few months or years, we could witness something else. But the technology or the infrastructure remains the same. We already witness that India is making progressive steps towards Blockchain technology. I am personally looking forward to seeing how this technology and the landscape evolves,” said he.<br /><br />Raj Shamani- Digital Content Creator, Entrepreneur, Investor and Podcaster said that while creativity will get hampered to some extent, the overall impact on the whole industry and people interested in this industry will be positive. <br /><br />“A lot of people have been misusing their power to pump &amp; dump and promote wrong things just to make quick bucks. This is going to be good for people who are here for the right reasons because they are anyway educating. And if they are providing good value education, people are going to learn about it. Also, it's always the best to tell people I am not personally recommending so that people can easily differentiate between honest opinion and promotional opinion,” said Shamani.<br /><br />He also shared some advice on how to connect with consumers. He said, “The best way to woo consumers is to provide them the right education and value. If you educate your audience right. If you tell them the right things. If you let them know the use cases. If you tell them about the community power. If you tell them how this is going to empower their life and not 'sell it'. The content will connect. People who have been already doing this thing in the space won't face a problem. In fact, this will make people more aware and push them to promote and make the right content. This will only help to eliminate the promotion of bad projects.”<br /><br />Anjali Malthankar, National Strategy Director, Tonic Worldwide said that with everything new comes excitement and concern and both need our attention. "I think the attention from regulators for any space which is seeing a crazy traction in such a short period, is expected. At the pace that NFT, Crypto are growing in popularity the interventions are understandable. As far as the challenge for creative promotions is concerned, I think the creative agencies have often come across the term during briefings – “It’s a creative challenge” So, in that spirit creative will always find its way to not let this come in the way of creativity. There have been very many categories, including traditional finance categories which have disclaimers and yet it does not stop good creative work. In fact, the fence sitters or doubters who were unsure of the VDA products, might consider the category, as promoters get more upfront and transparent about it. If VDA brands are strategically not dependent on or riding on the fad, confusion, consumers’ lack of knowledge and noise but have a genuine offering, then it is just about giving space to disclaimer which for today’s smart and conscious consumer is nothing but a sign of transparency. In fact, if we see closely Crypto and NFTs are born out of blockchain and the need for transparency and hence in intent they are both (the regulators and VDA category) on the same page."<br /><br />Rage Coffee recently made its debut in the blockchain matrix with its valentine's NFT campaign. Its Founder, Bharat Sethi said that the growing adoption of crypto tokens has led to the emergence of advertisements that downplay the risk associated with these assets. Therefore, according to Sethi, increased transparency is a welcome move and where it might impact creative freedom, when it comes as a hit on the consumer interest, it is best to be transparent and supply critical information/disclaimers in this volatile category.<br /><br />“Even after including the disclaimers and adhering to the guidelines, there is scope for being creative. It does restrict creative freedom in communication; however, this is in the best interest of an average consumer who might not have in-depth knowledge about cryptocurrency and VDAs. A promise that can not be kept should ideally not be made in a promotion. There is a need to educate the consumer on the basic ideas around NFT, cryptocurrencies and take the customer on a journey to understand how these assets are. The risks can not be downplayed as risk appetites are very personal. There is plenty of space to experiment, spread awareness and create a buzz,” said Sethi.<br /><br />NFT marketplace Fullyfaltoonft.com curated by Viacom18’s Youth Music &amp; English Entertainment cluster and powered byGuardianLink.io has already received an overwhelming response for its digital artwork preview. Keyur Patel, Co-Founder &amp; Chairman, GuardianLink and Co-Founder, BeyondLife.club said that consumer education comes first and it's a welcome move from ASCI to ensure customers are aware of the market volatility. "Crypto as an investment class is quite volatile compared to stocks or real estate. All investment Ads and campaigns have a responsibility to educate the users on the risks and affiliated volatility and liquidity restrictions and aspects of the asset. Even media, ad agencies, and other supporting ecosystems have the responsibility to educate the same market in a responsible method. NFT is not a financial asset. It is a digital asset associated with games, entertainment, and art. Its inherent value is either in art or utility. Also, the buyers of NFT don’t buy it because there is instant gains, they do it because they find affinity to Amitabh Bachchan or Stan Lee or they find Game like Racing very interesting and want to participate in it. Crypto is purely a trade asset, for investments and hence it needs very aggressive education to make sure, the expectations of returns for the buyers are not skewed by hype and unrealistic aspirations. So, this declaration will not just motivate consumers to study the brand/product before purchasing but also put the onus on celebrities who endorse digital assets to do due diligence thereby promoting a responsible environment. Many industries have been following such guidelines without seeing any impact on creativity. It will rather inspire marketers and content creators to make their storytelling more creative and credible than ever before."<br /><br />Sagar Pushp, Co-founder and CEO, ClanConnect agreed that clear-cut norms were needed in this space.<br /><br />“For advertisers, the greatest purpose of communication is to put across accurate messaging for users. The new promotion and advertising guidelines for crypto assets will bring this authenticity into the segment. It is a welcome move by ASCI as it will ensure that brand communication is not misleading. Going forward, brands will need to operate within the guardrails of these guidelines, making sure their messaging is not limited to quick money and gains. The intrinsic value of blockchain is much wider than the prospect of big money, and we’ll need to get creative to empower users with precise information,” said Pushp.<br /><br />After a long pause, now that there will be more clarity and standardization in crypto advertisements, their ad expenditure is likely to return on digital and traditional mediums. <br /><br />During the festive season and IPL last year, crypto platforms were at their peak. The month of Diwali, which was October in 2021, nearly had a 30% share of the category in digital advertising and it took a dip by 6% in November 2021, whereas on television, there wasn’t a single ad from Crypto platforms in 2020, revealed TAM. In 2021, television saw 33.4 hours of advertising from Crypto platforms. The festive season proved to be bountiful for television too as October had more than 75% share of Crypto platforms, up from 2% in June and 23% in September. <br /><br />A lot of people have been speaking about the risks of investing in digital currency without fully understanding how the crypto ecosystem works. ASCI’s guidelines, therefore, could help bring about more transparency and accountability into the ecosystem.<br />

ASCI releases new guidelines for Non-Fungible Tokens, Crypto ads; here’s what experts have to say about it

You might see Earth's reflected light in the dim glow.</p>
<p>A new Moon occurs when all of the Sun's light is reflected away from Earth, and the side of the Moon facing Earth is barely visible, as illustrated in the above figures. Sometimes the dark face of the Moon catches Earth's reflected glow and returns that light. The dark face of the Moon has a faint shine, a ghostly version of a full Moon. The phenomenon is called earthshine. It tends to be brightest between April and June, though it does occur at other times of the year. The photo at the top of the page was taken by an astronaut on the International Space Station on July 31, 2011.</p>

The middle figure above shows the positions of the Earth and Moon on July 31, 2011, when the top photo was taken. The Sun is on the left side of the figure (out of the figure at this scale), with sunlight depicted with yellow arrows. The Moon is reflecting little to no sunlight in Earth's direction; meanwhile, Earth is facing the Sun and reflecting plenty of light back in the direction of the Moon. An astronaut standing on the Moon after sunset would see a spectacular, fully lit Earth, as shown in the lower right figure. That reflected sunlight is in turn reflected back off the lunar surface to create earthshine.</p>
<p>Earthshine varies in strength throughout the year, since the light reflected from the Earth varies. Earth's reflected light (<a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Glossary/?xref=albedo">albedo</a>) is <a href="http://www.climatedata.info/Forcing/Forcing/albedo.html">brightest</a> in the Northern Hemisphere spring with a second, slightly smaller peak in the Southern Hemisphere spring.</p>
<p><a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=50653">Satellite measurements</a> of energy reflected from the Arctic provide a picture of why earthshine peaks in the spring. During this period, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun and winter snow and ice are still on the ground in the higher latitudes. Because snow and ice reflect more light than vegetation or water, the spring is brighter than the summer or autumn, when there is much less snow and ice. During the winter, the Arctic receives very little sunlight and reflects less light. Clouds and sea ice contribute to the peak in the Southern Hemisphere.</p>

The phenomenon is captured in Neil Peart's lyrics for <em>Earthshine,</em> featured on Rush's 2002 album <em><a href="http://www.rush.com/album/vapor-trails/">Vapor Trails.</a></em> Peart often writes about scientific themes, including <em>Countdown</em> from <em><a href="http://www.rush.com/album/signals/">Signals,</a></em> which recounts the maiden launch of Space Shuttle Columbia. Earthshine begins by describing the orbital mechanics that make the phenomenon possible: "On certain nights, when the angles are right…"</p>

Beautiful 'Earthshine' Effect Visible Tonight

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56b0ea5cdd089594778b47b3-805-604/apple data centre.jpg" alt="apple data centre" data-mce-source="Apple" /><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">A computer generated image of the proposed data centre in Ireland.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple is facing further delays on a proposed €850 million data centre in Ireland after appellants called on a local planning body to hold an oral hearing around environmental and power consumption issues.</p><p>Apple <a href="http://connachttribune.ie/apple-plants-seeds-massive-galway-data-centre-048/" target="_blank">filed a planning application for the data centre last April</a> and was hoping to start building the facility on a 500-acre site before the end of last year.</p><p>The Cupertino-headquartered company wants to use the data centre to store European user data and to help power online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps, and Siri for customers across Europe.</p><p>Most people in the area want the data centre to be built, local sources have told Business Insider. </p><p>But the application for the data centre in Derrydonnell Forest, situated near a small town called Athenry, in County Galway, is currently being held up by An Bord Pleanála - an independent planning group that decides on appeals from planning decisions made by local authorities in Ireland.</p><p>An Bord Pleanála was initially due to pass a decision on the data centre on February 3, but that date was pushed back to May 23. An Bord Pleanála said it pushed the decision date back because it had not received all the information it needed from Apple.</p><p>That date is now likely to be further extended, according to two An Bord Pleanála employees that we spoke to over the phone on Friday.</p><p>Nicola Meehan, an executive officer at An Bord Pleanála, told Business Insider that two appellants have requested an oral hearing, which has been approved by An Bord Pleanála. Meehan added that a date is yet to be set for the hearing.</p><p>These oral hearings aren't unusual for major infrastructure projects in Ireland but Apple will need to satisfy a panel of planners at the hearing if it is to get the green light on the data centre.</p><p>Another An Bord Pleanála employee that we spoke to over the phone said the "files are still with the inspector" and there's "likely to be a new revised date" for the decision.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56b0ea5cdd089594778b47b4-800-1149/apple_data_centre.jpg" alt="Apple data centre" data-mce-source="Apple Maps/Skitch/Sam Shead" /><p class="source"><span>Apple Maps/Skitch/Sam Shead</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The two parties that requested the hearing are an individual, Pat Larkin, and David Hughes Architects. They paid €50 when making their request for the oral hearing on top of the €220 they paid when they filed their initial appeal with An Bord Pleanála.</p><p>According to documents available through Galway County Council's website, Larkin has a number of concerns over the proposed data centre. Among them, he is worried that the data centre will have a negative impact on the environment and that the data centre is being built on a site that hasn't been designated for industrial use.</p><p>Larkin and a number of other parties have highlighted that Apple wants to build the data centre on "unzoned lands." However, Galway County planning guidelines are understood to allow for a "specialist enterprise development that is large scale or high value" and a development that facilities opportunities for "science and technology based employment."</p><p>Business Insider has contacted Apple and is awaiting a response.</p><p>A spokesman for Apple <a href="http://www.independent.ie/business/technology/apples-850m-data-centre-in-galway-faces-new-bord-pleanala-hearing-34657888.html" target="_blank">told The Irish Independent</a>: "We welcome the opportunity to address any additional questions An Bord Pleanála may have. The planning process is an important way for everyone to have their say and we've made every effort to incorporate the feedback we've received. Our plans are for our greenest data centre yet which is designed to be sympathetic to its surroundings and, like all our data centres, run on 100% renewable energy from day one."</p><p>Other parties that have come out against certain aspects of the data centre development <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/athenry-golf-club-appeals-apple-data-centre-2016-4" target="_blank">include Athenry Golf Club</a>, which is concerned about flooding, and Ireland's Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, which is concerned about the impact wildlife, including bats and badgers.</p><p>An engineer named Allan Daly has <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-data-centre-could-increase-irelands-electricity-consumption-by-82-2016-4" target="_blank">concerns about the data centre's electricity consumption</a>, notably that it could increase Ireland's overall electricity consumption by 8.2% by the time it is fully built out. Apple claims in its Revised "<a href="http://gccapps.galwaycoco.ie/viewexternaldocuments/ViewPDF?ref=2035216" target="_blank">Environmental Impact Statement</a>" that the data centre won't use this much energy.</p><blockquote class="blockquote"><div class="p402_hide"><p>Our data centre will have an initial 6 megawatts power requirement when it comes online in 2017. According to EirGrid's projections, this would amount to approximately 0.17% of Ireland's national electrical power. At full capacity, which we expect to be around 2021, the first data hall will have a power requirement of 30 megawatts which is approximately 0.78% of Ireland's national electrical power use for 2021. At full capacity in 10 to 15 years time we expect the maximum power requirement to be 240 megawatts, though it will likely be less because of technical improvements in energy efficiency, which would represent 2.5%.</p></div></blockquote><p>Daly told Business Insider by email: "In my opinion, the proposal is a serious breach of established planning policy that contravenes the principles of sustainable and sequential development in East Co. Galway. Most data centre proponents tend to overlook the planning issues with the belief that the economic benefits to the area - in the form of jobs gains and supporting and/or "magnet" enterprise - override all other considerations."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/560bcb07dd0895b36d8b458f-3460-2591/badger-1.jpg" alt="badger" data-mce-source="REUTERS/Russell Cheyne" /><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Russell Cheyne</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Frank Greene, president of Galway's Chamber of Commerce, <a href="http://www.independent.ie/business/technology/apples-850m-data-centre-in-galway-faces-new-bord-pleanala-hearing-34657888.html" target="_blank">told the Irish Independent</a> that the data centre could act as a catalyst to bring additional investment to the region. "The wider significance of having Apple as part of the DNA of the Galway region is huge," he said. "It's also going to have a big multiplier effect on indirect jobs here."</p><p>Daly said he believes the Irish planning system can be extremely subjective and discretionary. "This makes planning decisions vulnerable to political influence by other government agencies (such as IDA Ireland, the agency responsible for the attraction and development of Foreign Direct Investment in Ireland), as well as individual politicians. There is no doubt that significant pressure has been applied to An Bord Pleanála to approve the development applications associated with Apple's data centre."</p><p>The oral hearing will take place at an undecided venue in Galway, which Apple will be invited to attend.</p><p>Apple was initially hoping the data centre would begin operations at some point in 2017 but the setbacks suggest a later start date may be on the cards.</p><p>Some 5,500 of Apple's 18,300 European staff are based in Ireland, which is also home to its European headquarters. The company plans to hire an additional 1,000 staff in Ireland before 2017.</p><p>Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have also built data centres in Ireland, and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-submits-planning-permission-200-million-euro-data-centre-clonee-ireland-meath-2015-6" target="_blank">Facebook also has one planned</a>. Many of them have based their European headquarters in the country, which offers a lower corporation tax rate than other European nations.</p><p>Elsewhere in Europe, Apple is planning to build a data centre in Denmark on the same scale as the one in Ireland.
