That is if you still use those booklets. Since your bank’s mobile app allows you to do all this and much more online, can there be more digitisation in banking? Well, the new CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank Ashok Vaswani thinks that a lot more technology can be deployed in banks. As the CEO of Barclays Bank UK, Vaswani knows how the lives of consumers can transform with digitisation. He is also cognisant of the fact that a bank does not only cater to millennials or GenZ population. At Barclays, he had a team of tech experts to help consumers who were even in their 1990s such that they could learn not just digital banking but even chat with grandkids on Skype or Zoom. That is how the new CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank thinks, given that his head and heart are in the right place. At a time when banks are struggling to keep consumers happy while maintaining high profit margins, Vaswani could well be the man who can plug the gaps. And, if there’s something he can talk about for hours, it is the technological transformation of financial services. Not only is he cognisant of the ease that digital banking brings, but also the risk that comes along with it. This generational shift at India’s fourth largest private bank in India clearly wants to up its game in the years to come by leveraging technology to transform not only its operations but also create new and better services for its customers. Imagine an AI Bot that actually tells consumers every month on how spending on eating out is much more than feasible or that average monthly savings are not good enough when you retire. Yes, Vaswani believes that is the next stage of banking as it can open up different ecosystems. In an interview a few years ago at the University of West England, Bristol, he said: “I would submit that a lot more digitisation can happen. Why would I not be able to tell you, you are earning so much, you are spending this much and you should be saving. Can you imagine, you spent so much money on Uber and that you should be careful?” There are so many aspects of digital transformation that limits are frankly only set in the mind. As the CEO of Barclays UK, he has not just built a lot of products for consumers but even their confidence in the bank and the banking system. It is a refreshing change to hear a CEO talk about confidence in the company and not just on margins. Vaswani has a proven track record spanning three and a half decades across the world’s leading banks. He was initially at Citigroup and more recently, at Barclays, where he built and grew the business to a scale. He brings with him significant executional experience with a high degree of compliance and industrial strength across corporate and consumer businesses. Vaswani was Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank, UK and subsequently CEO of their global consumer, private, corporate and payments businesses and Member of the group executive committee. Earlier, he was CEO Citigroup Asia Pacific and Member of the Citigroup Global Operating Management Committees. He also built and ran various country and regional businesses across geographies. What makes him interesting is that he has not only run global banks but has even been president of Pagaya Technologies, a US-Israeli AI fintech company. This kind of exposure makes him a much better candidate than any insider at Kotak Mahindra Bank. At last count, there were three top contenders for the job, but Uday Kotak has roped in an outsider given the extent of the transformation that the bank will need to undertake to remain relevant in the face of competition from other fintechs. Ashok is married to Veena and their daughter is working in the United States of America. It is interesting that Uday Kotak, first generation founder and promoter of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has brought in an outsider to run the bank. Organisations typically are wary of bringing in outsiders at top jobs mostly because of the friction that results from such hiring due to cultural fitment and acceptance of a known candidate. It is easier for the rank and file to accept an insider rather than an outsider but Uday Kotak has chosen to take the risky route. While in some unfortunate cases like Infosys, where Vishal Sikka did not fare too well when promoters stepped away in 2014, the experiment of outsiders has been rather successful at the Tata Group. When Ratan Tata took over the reins at the Tata Group, he brought in Kishor Chaukar who came from ICICI Securities to head Tata Industries. Ravi Kant came in from Philips India in 1999, and headed commercial vehicles for Tata Motors before becoming MD in 2005. In 1998, the then vice-chairman of Hindustan Lever (now known as Hindustan Unilever), moved to Tata Sons as executive director. Typically, Indian corporations bring in overseas talent when they believe that the requisite skills are not available in India. But given that India’s private banking sector has grown and flourished under the stewardship of homegrown talent, this shift is an interesting move by Uday Kotak, who clearly sees merit in Vaswani’s experience outside of India. No wonder Uday Kotak, Founder and Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank said: “I am proud that we bring a ‘Global Indian’ home to build Kotak and India of tomorrow.” Interestingly, Ashok Vaswani is a Bachelor of Commerce, Economics and Accountancy, from the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics (Bombay University), CA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, CS from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and Executive Education from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Uday Kotak too is alumnus of Sydenham College and has a postgraduate degree in management studies in 1982 from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.

Jio, Ola, Accenture, IBM and more are looking for data scientists across India

<ul><li>‘Challenge accepted,’ said Gurnani to <keyword id="15681942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chatgpt" source="Orion">ChatGPT</keyword> maker OpenAI CEO <keyword id="257641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sam-altman" source="Orion">Sam Altman</keyword> who had said it was totally hopeless to compete with his company on training foundational AI models.</li><li>Gurnani has taken a contrarian stance to that of the industry recently on the <keyword id="64527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moonlighting" source="Orion">moonlighting</keyword> issue.</li><li>He had created a unique approach to downsizing when his company took over troubled Satyam Computers. </li></ul>Come December, <keyword id="351287" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="c-p-gurnani" source="Orion">C P Gurnani</keyword> is all set to hang his boots as <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword>’s CEO, but that’s not making him take a back seat. Unlike most tech CEOs and other top leaders in general, he is unafraid to speak his mind. So much so that Gurnani made OpenAI CEO Sam Altman back down and clarify his comments that it’s hopeless for India to compete with his company on AI. The first to respond was Gurnani who ‘accepted a challenge’ on behalf of India — to create a ChatGPT-like product. “From one CEO to another, challenge accepted,” Gurnani said after Altman said, “The way this works is we're going to tell you, it’s totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundational models, you shouldn’t try and it’s your job to try anyways,” responding to a question on the capability of small team of Indians to try it. Altman’s comments, however, ended up reportedly offending the likes of minister of state for IT and electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Meanwhile, the 64-year-old Gurnani, never one to shy away from taking on challenges or voicing his opinions, however contrary — has taken the bull by the horn one more time. A votary of moonlighting Not too long ago, when moonlighting was a hot debate, almost every tech major including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys opposed it calling it an ‘ethical issue’. In fact, Wipro’s executive chairman Rishad Premji was a vocal opponent, claiming to have fired people for taking up side hustles while being employed with the company and ‘working’ from home. Amidst a sea of dissent, Gurnani was one of the first voices who supported moonlighting – only asking his employees to be open about it. He asked them not to cover up the extra work as it would aid their resumes. “If you go by my word, if someone is meeting the efficiency and productivity norms, and he wants to make some extra money as long as he is not committing fraud, he is not doing something against the values and ethics of his company, I have no problem. I would like to make it a policy. So, if you want to do it, cheers to that, but be open about it," Gurnani had said. ‘People were not toxic’ Such out-of-the-box thinking and policies are not new for Gurnani. After the shocking Satyam scam, where its founder admitted to falsifying accounts, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra bought the company and brought Gurnani to run it. Almost all the employees of the beleaguered company had turned persona non grata. However, he said, “The company’s accounting books were toxic, the people were not.” Amidst dealing with legal and regulatory issues, he did roadshows lasting many months to convince clients to stay with the company. However, as the immediate task was to improve profitability of the company, he had to do what he dreaded — fire around 18,000 people. The firing was not done at one go however. The company gave a small salary for six months, set up job fairs, trained them and even had psychiatrists to help tide over the crisis – until they found another job. As with moonlighting and the Satyam restructuring, Gurnani brings his unique perspective to artificial intelligence (AI) as well. The chemical engineer from NIT Rourkela isn’t worried about AI taking over human jobs – he believes it will give humans more leeway to create emotional connections and relationships, and of course bring in more creativity to work and life.

Mahindra is also preparing to launch the New Roxor 2021, for which they continue to ‘retain as well as bring in new and relevant skilled talent.’ Mahindra opened the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/mahindra-opens-detroits-first-car-making-plant-in-25-years/article20608973.ece">Detroit plant</a> in 2017 with an investment of $230 million, marking its first automotive plant in nearly the city in three decades. The North-America plant plays an important role in building out off-road vehicle Roxor and GenZe Electric scooters for Mahindra. <ul><li><keyword id="7681538" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra-CFO">Tech Mahindra CFO</keyword> <keyword id="388883" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manoj-Bhat">Manoj Bhat</keyword> is happy with the budget but feels more could have been done to address the needs of the IT services industry specifically.</li><li>Taxation, for instance, could have been simplified to ease the cost of doing business across multiple geographies.</li><li>Since the IT services industry has been a huge job creator in India, it would also have been helpful if there were more incentives for employment generation.</li></ul>India’s latest budget did acknowledge the role of technology in economic revival. For instance, the government plans to introduce e-courts for faster resolution of disputes. It also earmarked ₹1,500 crore to dole our financial incentives for digital transactions. However, what the IT services players in India, like <keyword id="43217" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword>, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), wanted to see was some relief on taxes and incentives for job creation. “I think the government has come up with a budget that is investment oriented. In a lot of ways that ticks a lot of the boxes. But, specifically for IT services, there’s nothing there,” Tech Mahindra CFO, Manoj Bhat told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. Taxation is getting more complicated world over The industry lobby, NASSCOM, hoped for some clarity on the tax framework with more employees working from home — a trend that many companies plan to stick to in some form or the other in the long run. “As companies like us become larger and operate in so many countries, helping us work through some easier tax situations esp in international context whether its around transfer pricing or some of the other laws that are coming through would have been nice,” said Bhat. Transfer pricing relates to the prices charged by different entities — located in different jurisdictions — for goods and services. The tax rules related to transfer pricing are complex. Governments, in India and abroad, are becoming increasingly proactive in scrutinising transfer pricing policies and practices. The IT services industries is a big job creator At a time when the Indian economy needs a demand boost, Tech Mahindra’s CFO also believes that the budget could have done with adding some incentives for job creation. “That’s something they should consider perhaps in terms of continuing some of the benefits that were offered in the past few years that are no longer there,” said Bhat. In the past, the sector has been a huge boon for creating new opportunities and helping the economy grow. NASSCOM estimates that the $200 billion industry created over 200,000 new jobs in 2019 — a year that saw massive unemployment in India. “We require WFH to be enabled in SEZs (Special Economic Zones on a long-term basis. Since this requires movement of duty-free goods like laptops etc outside the SEZs, the Finance Ministry should provide the requisite clarifications under Customs and GST,” said NASSCOM in their pre-budget expectations. Even though bigger players can do without the incentives, smaller and upcoming IT companies would have welcomed the relief. The demand for talent is also on the rise as businesses that were once hesitant about going digital are bringing up their timelines to ensure that their customers can still reach them even if stepping out of the house isn’t an option. "If the workers are organised, all they have to do is to put their hands in their pockets and they have got the capitalist class whipped," NITES asserted. IT firms should be held accountable for endangering the professional futures of the employees and trainees. Companies play a good game about their beliefs and ethics on the surface, but in reality, It's just crony capitalism, one of the IT job aspirants alleged. Wipro has stated that it will honour all offer letters. However, experts, allaying fears of recession in US and Europe affecting IT industry in India, state that the trend is not new. They say since China is being hit post Corona period, India could be more resilient. The present trend could be the result of workability of pipeline projects. The Uttar Pradesh government, through its investment promotion agency <keyword id="9888370" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="invest-up" source="Orion">Invest UP</keyword>, has been successful in attracting beverages industrial units in Gorakhpur, Amethi, <keyword id="3481192" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prayagraj" source="Orion">Prayagraj</keyword> and Chitrakoot. <keyword id="3270385" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="varun-beverages-ltd" source="Orion">Varun Beverages Ltd</keyword>, all India franchisee of <keyword id="54572" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pepsico" source="Orion">PepsiCo</keyword>, has been allotted land in these districts through fast-track mode for setting up their units for producing carbonated soft drinks, fruit pulp or juice-based drinks. The company has proposed to invest Rs 3,740 crore in total in all the four plants with about 5,650 expected job opportunities. Additional Chief Executive Officer, <keyword id="14167509" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prathamesh-kumar" source="Orion">Prathamesh Kumar</keyword> said that Varun Beverages Ltd. has been allotted 45-acre land through fast-track mode in Narkatha village of Gorakhpur. The company proposes to invest Rs 1071. 28 crore here with around 1,500 expected employment avenues. With allotment of 68. 6-acre land in Bargarh Industrial Area in Chitrakoot, Varun Beverages Ltd has proposed to invest around Rs 496.57 crore with estimated jobs to the tune of 1,000. Around 24.7-acre land has been allotted in Saraswati Hi-Tech City, Naini-Prayagraj and the investor has proposed to invest Rs 1,052.57 crore with 1,500 employment opportunities, while 26.1-acre area has been allotted in in Trishundi Industrial Area-Amethi, where proposed investment is Rs 1,119.59 crores with 1,650 expected jobs.
