<ul><li>The Indian government has started installing sanitary pad dispensers and incinerators for women in CRPF (<keyword id="76600" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Reserve-Police-Force">Central Reserve Police Force</keyword>). </li><li>The first of its kind ‘gender sensitive’ Budget sanctioned ₹21 million to install nearly 288 pad vending machines, and an equal number of disposal units for sanitary napkins. </li><li>The CRPF will also install nearly 800 steel stands for drying clothes, especially for the women personnel. </li><li>CRPF has over 300,000 personnel — including 8,000 women personnel in the combat.</li></ul>The Indian government started installing sanitary pad dispensers and incinerators for women in combat, according to a<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/crpf-gets-sanction-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-1571932-2019-07-21"> PTI report</a>. Seeded in 2018 during the National Conference for Women in Police, the move aims to create better work conditions for ‘mahila battalions’ in the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allocated ₹21 million to its ‘gender sensitive’ budget. It aims to install nearly 288 pad vending machines and an equal number of disposal units for sanitary napkins. As many as 8,000 women are a part of India’s <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword>. In fact, the CRPF will also install nearly 800 steel stands for drying clothes, especially for the women personnel. The Home Ministry estimates a cumulative cost of nearly ₹300,000 for each sanitary pad vending machine, disposal unit and drying stand. “The sanction will help the force in ensuring better living and operating conditions for the over 8,000 women personnel who are in combat,” the ministry noted in the official sanction orders. The Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) and CRPF also have plans to introduce women protectors for women in the battalion. Overall, the CRPF has over <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/jul/21/in-a-first-crpf-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-2007290.html">300,000 personnel</a>, including several employed in conflicted or naxal areas of the country such as Jammu and Kashmir. The ministry also said that the same will be used in other Indian forces as well. The idea to create a work environment for women in ‘Khaki’ was originated on the sidelines of a study on the issues of health, privacy and challenges faced by women personnel at workplace. The study was conducted by Renuka Mishra, IPS officer and additional director general (ADG) in Uttar Pradesh. The survey painted a dismal picture of women in police forces and highlighted their struggles to keep up with their jobs. Some of them carry on without drinking water so as to avoid urination as workplaces lack basic necessities. In fact, the women personnel dispose used napkins in a pit. "The women personnel said it was difficult for them to dry their inner wear due to lack of facilities. Clothes remain damp as they did not dry due to lack of sunlight, and led to urinary tract infections in women," Mishra told news agency PTI. The revision in income tax rates will increase the purchasing power of the middle class sections of the society and thus, push the economic growth of the country in the long run, Kolkata-headquartered <keyword id="2240511" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bandhan-bank" source="Orion">Bandhan Bank</keyword>'s founder, Managing Director and Chief Executive <keyword id="2584765" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chandra-sekhar-ghosh" source="Orion">Chandra Sekhar Ghosh</keyword> said. According to him, the increase in the purchasing capability of the middle class will push the demands of the products and this will positively impact the economy of the nation. "Of course there is an expression of shooting up of the inflation slightly because of this increase in the purchasing capacity of the middle class. However, considering the multiple positive aspects of the tax rate revision, in my opinion, that threat will not impact the economy in a major way," <keyword id="4757" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ghosh" source="Orion">Ghosh</keyword> said. He also said that the income tax exemption will also indirectly help the banking sector on the deposits side. "Excess money in hand will prompt people to go for additional savings and this will improve the deposit side of the banks which is in a difficult shape now," the Bandhan Bank MD &amp; CEO said. He was especially enthusiastic about the new "Mahila Samman Saving Certificate", that will allow women a maximum deposit of up to Rs 2,00,000 having a maximum interest of 7.5 per cent for two years till March 2025. "This will definitely drive women towards savings and in my opinion this scheme is extremely innovative," he said. He also pointed out that Fiance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, in her budget speech, stressed on infrastructure development as well as development of the MSME and start-up sectors. "This is a positive step towards employment generation, since whenever there is infrastructure development there is opportunity for employment generation. Similarly, MSME and start-up sectors generate employment and these two sectors have been addressed well in the budget speech," Ghosh added. Today, the brand is called Lijjat Papad, and it has grown to be a ₹1,600 crore business with 81 branches and employs over 45,000 women across the country, all of whom are considered co-owners in the enterprise. Recognising her journey, the Indian government gave the Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian award in the country, to the 91-year old entrepreneur. While most people may not recognise her by name, it is unlikely that you are unfamiliar with her product. The group first made a batch of four packets of papads, which were sold to a businessman. Soon after that, the group increased from seven members to twenty-five and later the group registered as Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad and in 1962, it was renamed to Lijjat Papad. The papads are sold across the country and even exported to countries like the United States, Singapore, United Kingdom, Thailand and Netherlands among others. Not just papads, now Lijjat also sells masalas, atta, chapati and even detergent. The organisation has also had its share of failures, such as cottage leather, match sticks and incense sticks, which had to be shut down. “The credit of Lijjat Papad goes to every woman working here. This recognition is the fruit of their hard work,” Jaswantiben said while speaking to <a href="https://www.shethepeople.tv/top-stories/inspiration/jaswantiben-jamnadas-popat-lijjat-papad/">SheThePeople</a> after being awarded the Padma Shri. Jaswantiben-led Lijjat Papad believes in the principle of self-reliance and does not accept any donations or contributions. Jyoti Naik, the former president of Lijjat Papad during an <a href="https://www.rediff.com/money/2005/apr/15spec.htm">interview</a> had revealed that Lijjat’s committee consisting of 21 members decides how profits are to be distributed. “Even a ben who has recently joined gets the same share as others who have been with us longer,” she said. The profits are usually distributed by purchasing gold coins -- either 5 grams or 10 grams, depending on the profit. While Shaktikanta Das said that the decision to privatise banks lies with the government, he also lent voice on the issue. “The questions of privatisation, etc, can be addressed later. India had 21 government banks in 2018 before the mega merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda. In 2017 too, SBI merged with five of its affiliates and Mahila Bank. The government intends to merge banks and create at least four global-sized banks. In the Budget, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that they brought down the number of government banks by eight. The government is <a href="https://www.livemint.com/industry/banking/finance-ministry-starts-groundwork-for-fresh-bank-consolidation-1558945007770.html">reportedly considering </a>a fresh round of mergers too. India has a large number of public sector banks after a historic decision by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to nationalise 17 private banks, and bring it under the government wing. Curbing a crisis Das intends to keep non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) on a tight leash. A crisis has been unfolding in India’s shadow banks or NBFCs-- the ones that lend money but do not take public deposits-- since the crash of the gigantic IL&amp;FS, which made loans to infrastructure projects. Not only has it caused a cash crunch in the system, but also revealed a lot of dirt in governance in these companies. “The earlier light-touch approach will have to be suitably modulated in keeping with today’s requirements and anticipated developments,” said Das. A few weeks back, in the Budget, Sitharaman armed the RBI with ‘more powers’ to tackle NFBCs and the crisis that has been unfolding over the last many months. With financial stability high on his mind, Shaktikanta Das told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/privatisation-can-wait-give-time-to-see-results-of-banks-consolidation/articleshow/70322578.cms">Times of India </a>that those NBFCs with governance issues will be treated differently with intense regulations. At the same time, he also said that NBFCs in general will be provided liquidity support, as banks have stalled lending to them after IL&amp;FS turned insolvent last year. He however <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/rbi-in-sync-with-government-efforts-to-accelerate-growth-shaktikanta-das/articleshow/70322831.cms">denied the </a>sector’s request to gain ‘clean, unsecured money’ directly from the regulator. Accomodative stance When asked about a possible cut in base rates yet again, Das said that they have already provided the market with 75 basis points rate cut. Added to that, they have taken an ‘accomodative stance’ which itself implies another 25 basis point rate cut, taking the effective cut to 100 basis points. This, according to him is ‘adequate’ liquidity which is being sent into the system. RBI, under Das’ stewardship is working with the government to ensure growth and ‘accelerate economic expansion’. Its efforts are in sync with that of government to make sure there is credit growth. “I believe in having consultations with all stakeholders and the government is much more than a stakeholder,” he told TOI.
