As the coronavirus cases continue to rise in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, state School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has said schools will not reopen in the state before Diwali. Maharashtra has till now reported 15,17,434 COVID-19 cases and 40,040 deaths due to the disease. The Centre on March 16 announced closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It has now allowed graded reopening of schools from October 15. Gaikwad, who recently recovered from COVID-19, said schools have been conducting virtual classes and teachers have been taking special classes for students in some areas. However, the challenge is to find a way to end the academic year and assess students, she said. "While we are exploring various options, it is clear that schools will not open before Diwali," Gaikwad said. According to senior officials in the state education department, reopening schools under the current circumstances is out of question, as there is no sign of the pandemic abating. State Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant also said his department does not intend to reopen colleges until the COVID-19 situation is under control. "The situation is grim for students who wish to pursue higher studies abroad, as their future depends on our decision," he added. Even as the state government and bureaucracy mull over solutions, children and parents are worried as they seem to be caught in a quagmire. "I have taken an education loan and my parents are repaying it. If I don't get good grades in exams, how will I get a good job?" said Raviraj Humbe, an engineering student from <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword>. There must be some technical solution for conducting exams and tests, he said. Meanwhile, education expert Kishore Darak suggested that the state government can club two or three educational years so that concerns of parents about academic loss can be addressed. While the safety of students is imperative, it is high time that the state comes up with a bipartisan approach towards education, he said. "The government must come up with a solution where local officials are authorised to take context-specific decisions like full or partial reopening of schools or alternate day scheduling of classes, among others," he said. Concerned over the spike in Covid-19 cases, the <keyword id="541763" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana-Government">Telangana government</keyword> on Tuesday announced that it is temporarily shutting down the schools from Wednesday. Education Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy made the announcement in the <keyword id="6354702" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="assembly">Assembly</keyword>. She said the government decided to shut down the schools in the interest of the health of students and teachers and also keeping in view the requests from the parents. The minister said the decision was taken as a measure to prevent the spread of Covid. The orders will apply to all government and private educational institutions, hostels and <keyword id="1103013" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="residential-schools">residential schools</keyword>. Indra Reddy said the online classes will be conducted for students. She noted that Covid cases are on the rise across the country and there is a surge in cases in <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword>'s neighbouring states. Covid cases were detected in some schools in the state. She pointed out that states like <keyword id="413944" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar">Uttar</keyword> Pradesh, <keyword id="6355554" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and <keyword id="43945" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhattisgarh">Chhattisgarh</keyword> have already closed the schools. Telangana shuts down schools as COVID-19 cases rise

The Directorate General of Health Services (<keyword id="6430867" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dghs" source="Orion">DGHS</keyword>) has informed the <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> that four rounds of online counselling for <keyword id="11196228" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-PG-2021" source="Orion">NEET-PG 2021</keyword> have been already conducted and 1,456 medical seats have remained vacant, as the software stands closed. The DGHS said since the software is closed, further rounds of counselling could not be conducted to fill up the medical seats. The DGHS in an affidavit, submitted the software, which was used for online counselling of NEET-PG 2021, is closed and refund of security deposit for participating in PG counselling has been initiated. It also added that the petitioner has made the plea at a belated stage and it may impact the whole process for upcoming counselling session for <keyword id="12826212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-PG-2022" source="Orion">NEET-PG 2022</keyword>, and it is also difficult to run concurrently counselling for two academic sessions. A vacation bench comprising Justices M.R. Shah and Aniruddha Bose on Wednesday sought response from the Central government on petitions seeking a special stray round of counselling for the 1,456 vacant seats. The DGHS said it has acted in a bonafide manner and complied with the direction of the apex court in full letter and spirit, and no further rounds apart from four online rounds of counselling could be conducted. It added that NEET-PG 2021 counselling was delayed due to third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The DGHS said as per the direction of the top court it conducted four rounds of online counselling for the PG course and the last date of admissions for the PG course was May 7. These rounds of counselling also included an additional online special round for 146 seats, following March 31 order of the apex court, it added. The Supreme Court is scheduled to take up the matter on Thursday. The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the <keyword id="1873824" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="medical-counselling-committee" source="Orion">Medical Counselling Committee</keyword> (MCC) on the 1,456 vacant medical seats in NEET PG-2021, saying if students are not given admission, then it will pass orders and also grant them compensation. The vacation bench told the MCC Counsel, "Even if a single course has remained vacant.....It's your duty to see that they don't remain vacant." The bench got angry to see that 1,456 seats have remained vacant in medical colleges during the 2021-22 session. It said the MCC and the Central government are playing with the life of students by not conducting a mop up round of counselling for students. "You're playing with the future of students....," said the bench, adding that in May, the authorities learnt that seats were vacant, why didn't they conduct a mop up round? The MCC Counsel submitted that orders in the matter would lead to cascading effect and requested the court to allow him to place an affidavit on record to explain the matter. The top court allowed the Central government to file a response in the matter. NEET-PG 2021: DGHS tells SC no further rounds of counselling can be conducted, software closed

When the central government initially gave the go-ahead for schools to reopen, Uttar Pradesh was the only big state to consider a phased re-opening. Most of the states decided not to re-open schools amid the coronavirus pandemic. Here’s the status of schools across the country — The Indian government, while announcing the guidelines under Unlock 5.0, <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/education/article/mha-retains-unlock-5-0-guidelines-permissions-on-reopening-schools-in-india-states-to-decide-soon/673813">permitted </a>schools to reopen. However, it left the final decision to state governments based on the on-ground situation. The Punjab government allowed both private and public schools to reopen from October 19 for the students of class 9,10, 11 and 12th. The schools in Punjab are permitted to open for three hours daily and are expected to strictly follow the standard operating procedure. Schools in Haryana’s Gurugram also reopened from October 15 in a graded manner. However, schools <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/gurugram/attendance-picks-up-but-space-concerns-persist-in-gurugram-schools/story-0uenlJaYnF9wA21bxRBL3L.html">reportedly</a> have difficulty finding the space to accommodate everyone and keep inline with social distancing norms. The Uttar Pradesh government also <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/schools-reopening-students-return-to-school-in-noida-after-seven-months-1733323-2020-10-20">allowed </a>private and public schools to reopen from October 15. According to reports, some of the largest private schools in Noida have been equipped with cameras to help parents monitor their children in real-time and allay any concerns. The Himachal Pradesh government <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/himachal-to-open-regular-school-for-classes-9-to-12-from-november-2/story-9JTqJXwYoHhEwSVggfEkiN.html">allowed </a>schools to reopen for the students of class 9 to class 12th from November 2. It also allowed colleges to resume classes. The Delhi government, on the other hand, decided not to open schools. According to Education Minister Manish Sisodiya, all schools shall remain closed till October 31 since parents are still concerned about safety. Delhi schools to remain shut till October 31 — Most Indian states remain wary of reopening schools as well

"Given the current COVID-19 situation in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, we've postponed state board exams for class 10th &amp; 12th. The present circumstances are not conducive for holding exams. Your health is our priority," state School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted. "Keeping in mind the schedule of entrance exams for professional courses, class 12th exams will be held by end of May, while 10th standard exams will be in June," she said in a series of tweets. The health situation was being closely monitored and fresh dates for the postponed exams would be announced soon, Gaikwad said. The decision is the outcome of consultations with various stakeholders, like students, teachers, parents, elected representatives from across parties, academicians and tech giants, the minister said. "We'll also be writing to the <keyword id="6356155" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse">CBSE</keyword>, ICSE, IB, Cambridge boards, requesting them to reconsider their exams dates," she said. Thanking Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for approving the decision, Gaikwad said during the consultations, various alternative assessment options were evaluated keeping the health, well-being and future of students in mind. "Postponing exams seemed to be the most pragmatic solution," she added. On Sunday, Maharashtra recorded 63,294 new cases of coronavirus, its highest single-day rise since the pandemic broke out, which pushed the caseload to 34,07,245, as per official figures. Mumbai went into high alert after two persons tested positive for Covid-19, taking the total afflicted in the state to 10, including 8 in Pune, Chief Minister <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> said here on Wednesday. Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar informed the media late this evening that the ongoing Budget session of <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> Legislature is likely to be curtailed and ended on Saturday. A final decision on this will be taken on Thursday, they added. Pawar emphasized that the decision to cut short the legislature session is not out of any panic over <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>, but to enable the state government to marshall all its efforts towards the disease, and allow MLAs to return to their constituencies and oversee the precautionary measures being taken. Thackeray assured that though the 10 patients have tested positive, they are not 'serious' and they are undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Health officials have described the two found affected in Mumbai and the others in Pune as close to some of the afflicted who had returned from a Dubai trip last along with a 40-member tour. The two Mumbai patients are currently undergoing treatment in an isolation ward in Kasturba Hospital after their test reports were received on Thursday, an official of Communicable Diseases Control Programme said. The tour members hailed from different parts of Maharashtra and now warlike efforts are underway to trace them and implement the necessary measures. Thackeray and Pawar assured the people that the state government is fully geared towards tackling any crisis arising out of the coronavirus spread and appealed to all not to panic. "Those who have travelled and come from abroad are advised to stay indoors at home for 14 days. All others should avoid crowding in public places and exercise all other precautions as prescribed by the health authorities," Thackeray said. To a question, he said there appears to be no immediate need to shut down schools and colleges in the state and the situation would be monitored before taking the final decision. In a significant announcement, Thackeray said that there is a proposal to restrict people from entering the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) tourney matches in various stadia, as a precautionary measure. Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that sufficient number of beds in government and private hospitals - numbering around 650 in Mumbai - have been readied to tackle any emergency. "A central team of experts will visit the state soon and train our medical staff on handling Covid-19 patients. We have sufficient number of masks, medicines, beds and isolation wards, medical and para-medical staff to handle the situation," he added. While the state government has appealed to the people not to panic, as many as 138,968 passengers have been screened till Wednesday (March 11) at the three international airports in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. Besides, as per revised rules of the Centre, all passengers arriving from Iran, South Korea and Italy are being notified to the Bureau of Immigation. From February 29 till date, a total of 635 passengers from these affected countries have landed in Maharashtra. Since January 18, 349 people with suspected coronavirus symptoms were admitted to various hospitals in the state of which 312 have tested negative so far and discharged after completing their 14-day quarantine. Presently, 18 suspected Covind-19 patients are still in Pune hospitals and 15 in Mumbai hospitals whose test reports are awaited besides Coronavirus suspects in government hospitals in Nagpur and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
